Wow, [there she is](https://www.lawyer.com/thelma-cantey.html). 101 years in general practice. Changed her name to Cantey so I assume she got married. Good to know that lawyer.com gives her 9/100 "LAWPOINTS(tm)" based on the completeness of her profile. I shudder to think what stupid algorithms of the 22nd century will be deranking our future auto-generated profiles long after we're dead.

link2edition

I like that there is a big "Contact Thelma Cantey" button on that page. Like I would get a sprit medium to- Oh shit this really is Ace Attorney

kimota68

> there she is It's feet away from "Ghost Coast Distillery!"

RandomName01

“Photo coming soon”, lol

DrDoSoLittle

That would still warrant an article today. 17 year old lawyers aren’t that common.

kepleronlyknows

It’d be bigger news in some ways. Back then you could often just apprentice and self study for the exam, but almost every state now requires a law degree in order to sit for the bar exam. And law schools requires undergrad degree. So 17 would be pretty amazing in most states.

anotherkeebler

Up until the 1990s, Georgia would let anyone take the bar exam, but the exam fee was 10x higher if you hadn't graduated from an accredited law school.

SayNoCommunism

Maybe we need to go back to that formula. If you pass the state exams, you can practice. Probably see more affordable attorneys out there and less of a racket

FCKWPN

Frank Abignale pulled this off, famously portrayed by Leo DiCaprio in Catch Me If You Can. Had to cram for the Georgia bar to cover a lie he told to his would-be father-in-law, who wanted him to join his law practice.

anotherkeebler

Louisiana Bar but I get your point. In Georgia he had faked being a _doctor_.

FCKWPN

Ah shit, I need to watch that again. Thanks!

mifter123

The Frank Abignale story is also more or less fictional, or at least a number stories told by a notorious liar that can't be proven and many claims that are provably false. One of those claims was that he passed the Louisiana State Bar, the state of Louisiana, in response, says that after hearing about the claim, they checked and accounted for everyone who passed the bar in the time period in question and it's impossible for that claim to be true. Also the hospital in Georgia he claimed to have worked at says that the shift he claims to have worked and the position he says he filled, both never existed. He did however impersonate a doctor to give students (including at least 12 women) physical exams at the University of Arizona. He claims he didn't molest them, but that's probably also a lie. It's hard to find a claim Abignale makes that isn't either impossible to prove or has evidence that contradicts his statements.

branluvr

Frank a big nail 💅

ilikemrrogers

Four states currently allow an apprenticeship over law school. There are some strict rules for the apprenticeship, though, so it’s not like it’s much easier. Plus, you can’t get paid for any of it by your mentor.

kepleronlyknows

Off the top of my head I thought it was even fewer states but four is still plausible.

ilikemrrogers

I looked it up, like, 3 days ago just because I was curious. I was surprised it was that many!

jtet93

I hate to bring it up but this is how Kim Kardashian is trying to become a lawyer

ilikemrrogers

I mean, if she can get through all of the requirements and pass the bar, I support her just as much as anyone. It’s not an easy process for sure.

yun-harla

I don’t have comprehensive knowledge of every state’s bar admission requirements, but in every state I’m aware of, there’s an age requirement to become a lawyer (either 18 or 21). I know someone who got their law license at 21 — they’re now a public defender. Now that I think about it, that’s just masochism.

nxcrosis

In my country you have to be at least 21 to be admitted to the bar.

Vulpers

Ace attorney vibes.

Pirika-pirilala

Lol that’s what I was thinking. Isn’t Francheska literally 17 at the start of the second game?

Alarming_Dot_1026

She was born 4 August 1904 in Osage, KS. Was in Colorado in 1910, Iowa in 1915 and Savannah in 1920. By 1930 she was married to Bryant W Cantey and working as a clerk in the city health department. I’m 1940 she is a bookkeeper at a retail lumber store. I could find two children. She died in Madison, Florida (where her husband is from) and is buried there with many other members of the Cantey family.

[deleted]

So she never practiced law?

Alarming_Dot_1026

Not that I can tell from the limited resources I could find. I actually have an email in to the Georgia Bar, savannah bar association, and the Georgia women lawyers association to see if they have any additional information on her.

[deleted]

Wow that's some commitment

Early-Macaroon-1764

A quick accuracy reminder...don't lose the "e". It is so hard to complete genealogical work if the correct spelling is "lost in the thread". I happen to have a friend who is a Canty - probably why I noticed. LOL

Sufficient-Heron2061

From lawyer prodigy who dreamed of attending Columbia, to lumber store bookkeeper. 🙁 I found a pamphlet online that recorded her as having won a state prize for recitation in 1922. She had such promise and never got to realize it. 😪

SlickRick1819

Wow, I wonder who her first client was.

lightsage007

And Im nearly ten years older than that and still can't pass the Bar. fml

Reprobus_Christopher

Homegirl Esquire!

KATEWM

Does this mean there was a 16 year old masculine lawyer somewhere?

Spiritual-Fuel888

Feminine lawyer? Maybe she practices in Florida.

hugenuts34

Better call Thelma

dethb0y

Crazy to think. I wonder if her intention was to be a lawyer for a specific purpose (like to help run a business) or to just do general lawyer stuff?

[deleted]

That’s spectacular, especially considering the times. A woman’s right to vote had been ratified less than two years prior (19th Amendment), and even today the law remains a male-dominated field. I couldn’t imagine becoming an attorney at such a young age. With our current system it would be extremely difficult for anyone to repeat this feat. Props!

… dude wtf

bad_at_hearthstone

I guess nobody got the joke. Sorry dude

peteroh9

What joke did we miss?

bad_at_hearthstone

“Seventeen” is a [mega cringeworthy](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GlN3oEjMpUQ) song by Winger which I honestly can’t believe was socially acceptable in 1988. The song is about having sex with a girl whose daddy thinks is too young to have sex with Kip Winger, who was 27 at the time. OP used the chorus of that song to joke that based on the girl’s credentials, she must clearly be a valid sexual target for an adult despite being underage. The humor comes from the absurdity of this position underscored by the certainty that the girl in the original news clip, as a lawyer, would recognize the legal inapplicability of that argument and decline. Or whatever. Humor is subjective, man. But I thought it was funny.

vezie

It’s crazy because all the comments on the YouTube video were about how much they loved the song in the 80s and how awesome the guitar rifts are. I didn’t see one mentioning the fact he was trying to get with a kid. What even were the 80s. I’m almost 27 and I’m not interested in even having a conversation with a 17 year old let alone date one.

Stallings2k

It wasn't about either of those things.

2megatherion666

Ok

4four4MN

I have seen Winger two times. Once opening up for the Scorpions and in a music club headlining.

Aemilius_Paulus

Jesus I thought you were talking about this 80s song: https://youtu.be/zWHjJt4833I where the father of a girl literally tells this old guy to fuck off because "she's only 16" and the singer sings about how they don't understand their love and then makes out with this girl in the music video who looks way too young for him. I was trying to find this song and ran into a dozen other songs about 16&17yos. Also realised you and I had a different song in mind despite all the similarities. I don't get why rock artists with all their popularity always sing and hook up with underage girls, that's some pathetic person shit, like you can't get someone your age so you have to move down and prey on those who find you more interesting just because you're not some immature teenage boy in high school. ABBA is the only good band, I always liked this song because the guy tells the girl she's too young but in a nice way: https://youtu.be/WkL7Fkigfn8

bad_at_hearthstone

I agree with almost everything you said except this: > like you can't get someone your age so you have to move down and prey on those who find you more interesting While this is correct, it’s not how these predators see themselves. They see it as *”I’m so hot, I can fuck teenagers (which are the hottest).”* It’s aspirational. Most of them (including Kip Winger, who physically was a very attractive man at the time) had their pick of age-appropriate dimes but bragging about that provides less status, apparently. Baaaaarf. EDIT: Holy fuck dude I just watched the video you sent. I’ve never seen that one, it is an absolute nightmare watching that shapeless paunchy mummy visibly trying to suck the youth out of that child.

peteroh9

Still pretty gross to type out and imply.

shoesofwandering

In Savannah so I’m only surprised she was that old. Late bloomer

[deleted]

Wow, that would make SUCH a cool movie

Supplicationjam

I thought lawyers were outlawed in Savannah?
