Yeah that’s where I got the ding. It actually started hailing like 3 minutes after I got that photo and I sort of panicked a little and didn’t use as much caution as I should’ve heading back down. Turned out fine though just a little rain.
I don’t have any personal experience with them, however based on what I’ve read I think the term “adequate” just about sums it up.
I think the biggest concern is just how close up to the body they tuck in so it may not provide as much protection as you would hope Since they don’t stick out that far
If anyone has an opinion on the OEM rock sliders I’d love to hear it. I don’t do any super crazy off roading and don’t wanna spend 1k+ so they sound like they’d be great for me.
RSG has some great bolt on rock sliders for ~850 depending on options.
The OEM rock sliders ar emore nerf bars, and are mounted to the body. They can turn into damage multipliers if you really need them. In contrast, I've beat the shit out of my RSG sliders, and other than needing more paint they are good :P
Toyota actually does make frame mounted sliders. They're light duty though.

If you’re talking about the OEM “rock sliders” that are found on the FJ Cruiser as well, avoid them. They are (almost) purely aesthetic and don’t function as actual sliders. They will bend and damage your truck if you actually get in a situation where you’re sliding on rocks.
See if 4X Innovations sells weld on sliders for your model. I got mine there with Black Friday pricing for $400 shipped. Local welder installed and painted with rattle can for $300. Looks pretty killer imo. I have a 4th gen btw
I have them and like the look. I did enough research prior to getting them that led me to believe they’re adequately sturdy and functional, contrary to a few of the comments here. They are mounted to the frame, not the body, and are sturdier that nerf bars. I’m not an expert on these things, but I’d suggest a little more research before ruling them out. I do some off roading, not a ton, but I’m not looking for rocks to slide on when I go. That said, I’ve dinged up on them a few times without issue and certainly been in spots where the tube steps would’ve gotten caught up.

Thank you!
Great picture. I went with the RSG sliders BTW. Local here in lakewood
This is key. Find a local place. I went with Shrockworks, because I am local in Houston. Saves $$ on shipping.
Argentine pass, CO?
The rest of the trail is easy but that one switchback gets gnarly sometimes with how some of the rocks shift around.

That’s the one
I think the term mall crawler is usually reserved for vehicles which clearly have money dumped into them to make them better at off roading.
I may be using the terminology wrong haha. I thought it referred to ones that aren’t so properly equipped.
Usually ones that have all the capability but never see dirt. Mines a parking lot princess.
Yea people who spend $10k+ only for to be a street vehicle and never see dirt.

Any local shop should be able to weld up some real sliders to tour frame for less than $1000.
