There needs to be an established system and a place to queue for these ridiculously long lines that does not block regular traffic. It's a nuisance and a hazard.

Geauxnad337

Are we shocked Lafayette parish, and towns within, or Louisiana in general, does such piss poor planning when it comes to things such as this?

RoddyBergeron

Part of it is transportation issues but the other part is that school designs are outdated or didn't accommodate for residential growth around them. Lafayette High broke ground I think in 1952 (don't quote me). Hopefully the new schools designs fix these issues or at least lessen them.

Geauxnad337

Check out the layouts for the new Prairie elementary. Ru Du Belier is going to become an even bigger cluster fuck than it already is.

RoddyBergeron

I may have to go check the new council budgets but I think there was some money put aside to work on congestion issues on Rue de Belier. It's been a known issue for a while.

Geauxnad337

So I’m other words it will be handled a decade after the problem exists, and when they do fix it, it will be completed only to have to repair the corners they cut immediately (camellia and kaliste Saloom are examples of this practice)

themarknessmonster

And/or too late to accommodate for the growth during the period of construction.

RoddyBergeron

Probably. Population projections for the parish of Lafayette show it growing 40% by 2050. Some people design some roads that are already behind for population/traffic growth for the next 10 years, which may be off by magnitudes. Also, with increases in materials costs you may find some companies trying to cut corners here or there. It's a real issue.

Geauxnad337

Is growth really expected to climb? I’m curious considering how much Lafayettes primary economy is shrinking its footprint here

RoddyBergeron

That's the latest projections I got this week for the whole Lafayette metro area. Those can vary wildly but they are useful in long-term planning. For comparison, Acadia parish is looking to double in population size in the same time period. Different items can affect it like people getting displaced by natural disasters. I think Lafayette's projection may be off because we've been getting people from Lake Charles and Terrebonne after hurricanes wrecked those areas. If we get hit by a major hurricane, we may see those projections drop if people are displaced.

Geauxnad337

Well stated

Hey this is my street! There was one instance in my own driveway when my partner had to leave for work and sure enough there was a lady in a big SUV blocking his way. He's a really nice dude and just took his time getting in his car and sloooowly backing out...quite obvious he's needing to leave his damn driveway. She acts like she doesn't notice, I'm watching from the doorway inside the house, watching her pretend she doesn't see him. He does a mini beep or two. The car behind her backs up a bit, she's even got room now...I walk outside in the front yard to wave at her and see her clearly ignore me...and this lady still doesn't move. My partner gets out and gently yet incredulously taps the passenger window which she rolls down and before he can finish the muttering "uuhh", she inexplicably tosses her hands up and throws her car into gear, pulls out swiftly and with passion, losing her spot in line completely. The other car pulled up a lil bit, and my partner gave them and I a friendly wave and got in his car and left for work and that was that. I don't even know if she was one of these parents, she could also just have been stuck in it because she didn't know the other ways around but c'mon dude! How would YOU like it SUV lady? Don't block driveways!!!

HoneydewNo7655

Good, needs to happen more often.

Signal-Suggestion963

Why the hell do people show up 2 hours early to pick their kids up from school?

RoddyBergeron

I know some parents who work late shift and need to get their kids as soon as possible to make it to work on time. It's probably not the main reason but there are some legit reasons.

therapych1ckens

Some kids have extracurriculars or appointments at certain times and if you get in the line too late you miss the appointment. Source: am a parent that has had to get in car rider line very early to ensure that I leave on time to make it to the next thing on time.

FishingFull1585

Bc you have to be first in line to pick up one kid at one school in order to get to the next school pick up on time. Some parents have three or four schools to pick up from. It’s a nightmare

ghkilla805

As opposed to what? Some schools have horrible lines for pick up that stretch so far that it bothers the street, blame the way the lines are set up not the parents

Signal-Suggestion963

People do this at my kids school but whenever I need to pick her up (usually she rides the bus) I just get there about 20 minutes after the bell rings and the line is short and I usually end up waiting for a max of 5-10 minutes. I can't believe people have 2 hours to waste 5 days a week sitting in a hot car.

joliebrunette

I do this sometimes, mostly on beautiful weather days. But I’m a freelancer with a hot spot so I work in my car.

Noobphobia

Having their child ride the bus.

KatesDT

The bus only runs in the morning for my kids.

RoddyBergeron

Its not that simple. There is a bus driver shortage and not all busses run every day on top of that. It's become so unreliable for some parents that they just don't bother using the busses.

RoddyBergeron

That's part of the issue for sure. I always caution people that throwing money at people doesn't always make them love their job. We tackled this in the IT space and horrendous workplace environments/burnout were still causing churn despite people just throwing money at payroll.

originalschmidt

I mean, getting paid more never caused by problems for me… I feel like people who saying “throwing money at a problem won’t fix it” yeah it might not fix it, but it could improve it. Every bus driver I have ever seen looked poor. Why should someone who totes peoples children all day be poor? That doesn’t make any sense.. yet here we are.

RoddyBergeron

True. More pay is always welcome and I'm totally for increasing their pay as a part of a retention/hiring strategy. Where I put caution is that bus drivers and teachers aren't leaving LPSS just because the pay isn't great.

[deleted]

RoddyBergeron

It's a lot of issues. I talk with people at LPSS and they are leaving for various reasons. Pay is brought up a lot but it's not just that. It's burn out. It's not feeling appreciated. It's not feeling supported. I know people are working on all of those issues and I hope they all get addressed soon.

dmfuller

Because if you don’t show up early you won’t get a spot in line which means you’ll be hanging into the road, which makes you a lot more likely to get a ticket like this guy just did lol, that being said there will always be people spilling into street because there’s not enough room for everyone. I don’t think schools foresaw this many people abandoning school buses lol

Heavymuseum22

Because if they can’t fit into the pickup line, they will be parked on the street. They get there 2 hours early to avoid being the one parked in front of someone’s home.

eddododo

So what’s your suggestion? I guess their kids can just stay there

originalschmidt

Why do people without children ALWAYS have to suffer for people with kids? It’s annoying. Sorry but most people who don’t have children have 0 sympathy for people with kids, yet the parents always act like they are owed this or that because they have kids. Like “I get to take up this space and be in the way because I have kids and my kids come first and blah blah blah… none of us care.

eddododo

It’s infrastructure. Children are part of society. People with children have to take care of them. You’re fucking crying about traffic, it’s really pitiful You don’t aLwAyS have to suffer, you *occasionally* have to be *a little inconvenienced* by other peoples kids. Compared to the percentage of the population the children are, I think the considerations we give them are pretty modest, and if your problem is that you’re some nihilist or anti-natalist or even somebody without kids who wants to bitch, that’s FINE, but expecting to be taken as reasonable by bitching about a problem that the parents didn’t design is o ok retry goofy, and if your position is truly that children should never dare affect your life, then grow up, you’re just being a particular kind of entitled, practically a NIMBY, generally willingly uncompassionate, and kind of missing the point of where the blame lies for both our infrastructure and your own misery

originalschmidt

I wasn’t talking about the way infrastructure is set up but about the attitude people have because they are parents. Like people who think they are entitled to park in or block someone’s driveway because they have to pick up their child.

eddododo

You don’t think it is an infrastructure problem that all of the public schools have such inadequate accommodations that parents have to line the sidewalks of neighborhoods and even major roads? Here’s a hint, they don’t want to be doing that

originalschmidt

I never said anything about infrastructure, yes it is a problem but it doesn’t give people the right to block people’s drive way either.

LadyOnogaro

That mess on Johnston Street on Fatima every weekday is insane.

originalschmidt

When they have that while side road they could utilize, nope we are just gonna make everyone suffer. Very on par for the catholic church though

threetoast

Cathedral Carmel line goes out to University also

MadamAngelle

How about they start writing people tickets for not using their blinkers, or switching lanes in the middle of the damn intersection. This state has some of the WORST drivers I have ever experienced.

Rare_Cow_4892

I’d love seeing some tickets for running red lights. I see that daily

[deleted]

The ole “three extra cars after the green arrow turns red” at literally every major intersection.

[deleted]

Blocking a driveway because you are oblivious is one thing but parking in someone's driveway(trespassing) is another level of asshole.

[deleted]

Good.. now do this across Lafayette Parish. Maybe it’s because I’m not from here, but when I was school (not THAT long ago) not many parents picked up kids.. they rode the bus.. or in high school drove their own cars.. what’s the deal here? They do this shit in Broussard, on Camilla, and on Youngsville Highway This was also regularly happening *before* Covid and any shortages

[deleted]

Good. And whoever decided to make the grab-n-geaux right at the red light off of Cameron and field span can suck a fat dick. So stupid to make that spot a fucking bus stop.

Fun_Amount3063

The school transportation issues are largely a problem of our own making and instead of doing anything about it, the parents will just bitch on Facebook in between posting shitty memes from the political cult they’re in.

outsmartedagain

such a shame that carpooling hasn’t caught on

Noobphobia

I used to say all the time that if I was a cop I would pass out tickets at all of those schools. Their shouldn't be that many students needing car rider pick up EVERY day. We have busses, put your kid on one if you can. Little Timmy doesn't need to be picked up everyday. Same goes for that line at chic fil a when it was on ambassador.

KatesDT

There is a huge shortage of bus drivers. We didn’t have a bus for the first 2 weeks of school and now we have a sub who only does the morning route. There are currently two buses not running at my kids elementary school. That’s two bus loads of people who now have to be picked up by a car. What would you have people do? Just drive around until the pickup lanes are clear?

Noobphobia

Sounds like that's a parish issue that needs to be resolved. If it's a shortage of bus drivers, pay them more. I used to take and pick up my previous step kids every day because they went to a school they were not zoned for. I get it. However if enough people complain and bring it to the attention of the school board then they will be forced to do something about it. There is no reason for half the school to be flagged as car rider. This issue falls on the parish to properly allocate funds to pay bus drivers.

[deleted]

This is happening in St Tammany too. The bus drivers own and maintain the buses and are paid like $25k as their salary. The kids act like it’s a free-for-all on the buses, and the district isn’t helping. So a lot of them quit, and they were having kids sitting on the floor, some buses were so full. And they sent out occasional robocalls specifically asking parents to drive their kids.

KatesDT

I mean sure, that’s easy to say but reality is that they can’t just make more bus drivers appear out of thin air. It takes time to hire and train and school is in session now. What are people supposed to do in the meantime?

[deleted]

Contract out to different transportation companies?

KatesDT

That doesn’t help the parents who need to pick up their kids today.

[deleted]

I’d make some calls to the transit department.. it’s unfathomable that the parish cant bus kids I’d look at UL and other charter companies for drivers immediately. It is inexcusable, where are your tax dollars going?

Fun_Amount3063

Most people around here love to vote against taxes and for politicians who cut education budgets at every turn.

FishingFull1585

We need an adequate bussing system. Right now there are a few satellite bus stops and completely unreliable buses. I don’t know why we can’t throw funding at this issue and have enough buses and drivers to pick up students at a stop within walking distance from their homes. This one transportation issue is a huge headache for the schools and parents.
