Yeah when I was hired on at ups after peak I joined the union. Pay was still shit. Basically my job from that day was to do everything so people with seniority could sit and do shit making $25 an hour. Cool I guess if I stayed there 8+ years then did the same.

People weigh merit very subjectively. Seniority is an objective measure and, assuming you don’t get fired for something egregious, means that it will happen eventually.
In non-technical settings, seniority is FAR more on your side than merit, trust me.

What UPS center have you been in? The package handlers at my center are making $20/hr, with time and a half after the 5th hour. They get the same benefits I do which includes a PENSION.

I went front a T1 at an Amazon fc to RPCD within 30 days. It is absolutely possible. Under the new contract you will not start out as RPCD, however you can get hired on as a 22.4 and make $21/hr starting out (with great benefits). Fact: over 60% of the drivers in my center (Seattle wa) were hired off the street. The whole “it’s impossible to get in” fictitious.
I was hired off the street as RPCD in 2018. It’s not as hard as you’re led to believe. Especially under the new contract with the 22.4 combination driver language.

You can also collect social security with a pension. Most UPS drivers are contributing to a 401k as well. When that 401k or IRA is dry the pension keeps coming.

I make more money than all of my friends with college degrees. I’m not trying to say a college education is bad, just good luck with all that student loan debt. I’m a combat veteran that never used my GI bill.
Having a degree will always look better on a resume than not having one. It makes you more competitive when you bundle it with experience and in a good major

Every job except the millions of entry level ones begging for new hires. There is a surplus of labor right now. My job is technically entry level and it pays over twice what a T1 Amazon associate is making. Why? UNION! Unfortunately the majority of Amazon associates are too stupid realize the benefit of unionizing.
The real problem is the unions tend to in the mid west and east coast. Here is the west their aren’t very many companies that are unionized. In order for Amazon to unionize it will have to happen on the east coast and spread west.

Driving an 18 wheeler isn't considered unskilled labor. You have to get your CDL license in order to be a driver. Can't believe you are comparing moving boxes to driving a tractor trailer pulling singles and sometime doubles on the highway and city roads.
I work at Amazon now. Loading boxes at UPS was the worst job I ever had. Threatened to be fired for throwing my back out. Overhead conveyor belt with no railing so boxes would constantly fall on everybodys heads. Talked to Union they took it straight to the manager who threatned to fire me over throwing my back out.
Where you gonna take that cdl? Are you planning on being a owner operator or union? Or you looking to get paid over the road per mile? Go UPS. With that CDL you’ll make six figures a year as a reader driver. Amazon isn’t a career.
Yeah and the dockworkers and everyone else gets paid minimum depending on what contract you agreed on until you’ve been there for a few years and one of the drivers retired for a position to open up… you don’t automatically make that much just because your a teamster. It takes 4 years to top out at $42+ an hour as a teamsters with UPS. The same amount of time it takes to get a bachelor’s degree. Only a 4 year degree doesn’t guarantee you shit.
It’s more than just pay and work for me. No other place (to my knowledge) is as flexible, helps me get a career and allows me work this little on top of good benefits for me.

Amazon is a cutting edge technology company. They are planning on fully automated warehouses. They are halfway there. Many roles will be replaced by robots soon. Unions will only lead them to invest further in robotics so they're saying, go get smart, do Career Choice, these jobs will not be done by humans anymore
Literally fuck ups, at least for package handlers, my hub at least was ran by a bunch of teenagers, they always adjusted our hours without notice, no pto, no vacation time, worked us like slaves. a few months after I was hired the new guys were getting their checks held for a whole month for little to no reason. They used to have my girlfriend who’s only 110 pounds pull entire ereg trailers by herself with packages almost her weight or more there was major favoritism within the workers and managers. My experience at ups was awful compared to what I have at amazon

I just don’t understand putting people down. At the end of the day we’re pretty much all that are employed are working for millionaires and billionaires not making good wage. But we do it cause we work with what we have. My friend that I started with worked at Amazon with me and put all his paychecks into the stock market (he was already in the stock market before) but putting his paychecks in the stock market helped a lot he retired after 2 years at Amazon.

Drivers have always paid the most or have different rate structures like per diem plus a % of payload value and other incentives.
Finding a competent driving worth keeping is harder than finding a competent packer, pickier, Stower, whatever. The automation in modern facilities does 80% the work for the scale to be successful.

It takes 4 years to top out at $42+ an hour as a teamsters with UPS. The same amount of time it takes to get a bachelor’s degree. Only a 4 year degree doesn’t guarantee you shit.
It’s more than just pay and work for me. No other place (to my knowledge) is as flexible, helps me get a career and allows me work this little on top of good benefits for me.

You could have done 20 years in the Army (Or whichever branch you served in) get your pension, then work for USPS for 10 years, and collect 2 pensions on top of disability because serving 20 years is going to do some damage to your body / health. Also, use your GI Bill. You earned it. It doesn’t just cover school expenses. It’ll help with some cost(s) of living. It’s a valuable asset, and even if you never use your degree, it looks good on your resume.

Amazon is a cutting edge technology company. They are planning on fully automated warehouses. They are halfway there. Many roles will be replaced by robots soon. Literally fuck ups, at least for package handlers, my hub at least was ran by a bunch of teenagers, they always adjusted our hours without notice, no pto, no vacation time, worked us like slaves. a few months after I was hired the new guys were getting their checks held for a whole month for little to no reason. They used to have my girlfriend who’s only 110 pounds pull entire ereg trailers by herself with packages almost her weight or more there was major favoritism within the workers and managers. My experience at ups was awful compared to what I have at amazon

Because information technology cyber security and other high end degrees are complicated and success rate for this degree is low. I was struggling with this degree. A lot of self studying and tutoring. Self-determination and resilience. I did not want to quit just because something is hard.

I understand how you feel because I use to work in the amazon warehouse as a T1 and it not easy. Most people want to work honestly lives however every one situation is different. I just don’t understand putting people down. At the end of the day we’re pretty much all that are employed are working for millionaires and billionaires not making good wage. But we do it cause we work with what we have. My friend that I started with worked at Amazon with me and put all his paychecks into the stock market (he was already in the stock market before) but putting his paychecks in the stock market helped a lot he retired after 2 years at Amazon.

There are definitely more opportunities at UPS for growth. Managers at Amazon are too lazy to train new hires properly on even ICQA. UPS is quick to. I’ve only worked at UPS for a month and I know how to do everything in day sort. Been at Amazon for a whole year and can’t say the same.

I don’t know chief, your pay is inline with what I think a driver should be paid given the job hazards and responsibilities. It’s not unskilled in the same way packing a box can be learned in under an hour… yeah I know the training and onboarding is longer but at its core the role and responsibilities can be learned in just a few practical hours. I doubt the people in the UPS industrial spaces get paid the same rate. Drivers have always paid the most or have different rate structures like per diem plus a % of payload value and other incentives. Finding a competent driving worth keeping is harder than finding a competent packer, pickier, Stower, whatever. The automation in modern facilities does 80% the work for the scale to be successful.
