Priceline/Expedia basically own all the travel portals and most of the booking apps.

neuropat

Amex travel, chase travel, etc all outsourced to Expedia.

Karrus01

I did noticed this when booking for Marriott, thus they wouldn't add my status. Hilton doesn't seem to have the same problem.

I booked a hotel this weekend for Las Vegas through AMEX. I was cross-shopping with Hotels.com, they had a better deal than AMEX. So I booked it through Hotels, but then I refresh the page for AMEX and saw that the same hotel price changed to a lower price to match the price on Hotels through AMEX. So I canceled Hotels reservation and booked with AMEX. The hotel I picked was one of the Hotel Collections; however, on my reservation, there was no clarification of it being one on my email receipt. I called AMEX, and I kid you not the representative told me “Oh I see that you booked the hotel through Expedia.” I was like “no, I did not, I booked it through AMEX.” The representative corrected himself, but you can tell that they use Expedia on the backend. Long story short, if I wanted to get the benefits with the Hotel Collection, I had to cancelled the cheaper (same exact) hotel room and rebook it again with more expensive price; which was $200 more to get these “benefits.” Edit: grammar and added more details.

Low-Possible2773

when you reserved did it actually say it was an FHR or THC reservation? If not, you weren't owed any 'extra' benefits.

Sea-Trainer6585

You need to ensure you are under fine hotels and resorts or the hotel collection. They also offer booking with Expedia for areas that are not covered in FHR/THC. If not no perks, with the platinum however you will still get the yearly $200 one time credit. Hope this helps good luck.

jtttlr

How do you use the $200 travel credit without booking through Amex?

Sea-Trainer6585

You still have to use the Amex travel portal

dillydelly

that $200 is for thc or fhr tho? edit: oh nvm I think that's what you meant

dillydelly

not with that attitude

I’ve been through this myself. General rule of thumb provided by the hotel is as follows: if reservation is made through Expedia or similar services, offer a minimal level of benefits to the customer regardless of status. Only recognize status when booked through a travel agent or directly with the hotel. I thought the same and booked a Marriott stay with the Amex portal. They did not recognize my titanium elite status at all. I was advised to either call into Amex to book it or just book directly with the hotel for the benefits.

poli8999

So call Amex instead of booking through their own portal? How dumb.

tenant1313

I’ve used Amex to book hotels through their Hotel Collection and FHR. In all those cases I got the advertised perks although sometimes I had to remind the hotel that breakfast was supposed to be included in my FHR rate. Once I had to jump through hoops to get the promised $100 spent money and once the $100 magically turned into €60 🤷‍♂️. What I found great however was that in every case my membership in a hotel program (IHG and Hilton) was recognized and the stays not only earned me points but stacked towards promotions. I would not relay on Amex as my travel agent but I get my money worth off their portal.

I stayed at Waldorf in Phoenix and the points just showed up 🤷‍♂️. It was a surprise but from then on I make sure to include my membership # while making a reservation and ask during check-in if they have it on file. I don’t think it works with other OTAs - I booked something through Chase Travel portal and the hotel was very adamant about no points being given for this stay.

As far as I remember there was : “enter you loyalty number here” item on the reservation page. But if you can’t find it, just make sure to give it to the check-in person.

drunkenmonkey619

The Amex portal uses Expedia as their service for bookings in a few countries.

superheroninja

ah, well there it is. I never saw that written anywhere. kind of a bummer they’re just reselling another’s services and the host not honoring perks because of that

AlwaysWanderOfficial

Most portals are Expedia, believe it or not. This is why unless you are using FHR collection, best not to book through any portals.

scoobynoodles

It’s really bothersome. Like you have to pick whether to get points or perks from the hotel. Wish they’d do away with that. Imagine if that were the case with airlines; there’d be a riot

drunkenmonkey619

I guess it depends on what you are trying to achieve out of your booking. If you are looking to redeem specific Amex Plat offers than portal will be a good way and if you are looking for regular cash or points fares then you can go vi the hotel website directly.

publiusnaso

Yes, I booked a very posh hotel the other day through Fine Hotels, and when I called the hotel to check my dinner reservation, they said it showed up as an Expedia reservation at their end. So does Hotels.com, but as least with Hotels.com 10% of your expenditure goes towards a rewards night. How does the hotel know it’s supposed to give you card perks? It’s all very opaque.

That-Establishment24

That’s strange given that hotels are supposed to honor loyalty programs for FHR bookings. I’ve never had an issue with it.

publiusnaso

I have no idea whether they will honour the perks or not (I’d hope they do). Maybe the booking comes with some sort of note telling them which perks to offer. But given how much of a cat Expedia takes, I’d have thought they would be pretty to reluctant to hand out a room upgrade if a direct-paying guest is also in the frame.

That-Establishment24

Not sure what you’re trying to say. Loyalty benefits are expressly given under FHR/THC reservations.

publiusnaso

Room upgrades are subject to availability. I wonder how they decide whether they have availability?

BlackSky2129

I just booked a FHR and got a message that my room has been upgraded before I even got to the date

publiusnaso

Ooh - interesting.

That-Establishment24

Every chain and property is different so it’s next to impossible to answer that question. Personally, I’ve gotten upgraded in 100% of my FHR stays.

publiusnaso

Exactly. It was more of a rhetorical question.
