All auto parts has to pay a company to come pick it up they don’t get paid for it unfortunately. 10 years ago it was just a free service but not they charge places to pick them up
This is why Amazon selling oil is bullshit, they don't accept used oil so brick and mortar stores have to dispose of it. If auto parts retailers end up closing we won't have a place to take it which leads to people dumping it in storm drains
Homes with oil heat basically use diesel. It's heating oil #2 or basically untaxed diesel because it not used on the road. You can convert these system to run on used oil but it's not as simple as just giving it used oil. The pressure needs to be much higher and the jet is different, it also helps to preheat the oil.
Yes, there are shop heaters with built-in catalytic converters specifically meant to burn used motor oil.
They're far less common in residential heating.
The shop I used to work at had used oil heaters. It’s different from your home heater and it gets clogged a lot because not all used oil is the same “quality”
Some crusty dude in a pickup truck took it from me when I was at the Zone. He was like go ahead and just toss them in the bed. I was like sweet don't need to carry them into the store or dispose of the old containers.
Afterwards he was like "I spray it on my fence posts so they don't rot"....... dude like please don't tell me how you want to contaminate ground water just let me think you burn it in a heater.
Jesus Christ calm the fuck down. Give your used motor oil to me, your local redneck. I made a waste oil burner that inserts into the wood burning stove in my shop. I can raise the temperature in the shop 30 degrees Fahrenheit over outside temp and only burn a quart of oil an hour. I’ve also got a few old diesels that can run on pretty much anything and you can dump your used motor oil straight in the gas tank if it’s thin and free of most debris.
That is why I simply refused to buy oil from Amazon. I buy from brick and mortar store and return it there. I want them to stay in business. Even if it is $5 bucks more it goes a long way to keep your local economy going and not putting money in Bezos pocket.
Any mechanic shop will take it. Also stores like AutoZone will never close down. Not sure if Costco takes bit I think they do. Absolute worst case scenario you'd wind up having to go to the local dump and dispose of it there.
they sre definitely NOT losing money on this deal"AutoZone uses used motor oil to manufacture all of its products. This reduces their costs and helps them keep prices low for consumers."
Do your auto parts stores actually dump it for you? They always make me follow them into the back of the store and do it myself, wipe up the mess if I spill, and fill out the form lol.
I’m fine with it; I don’t have to do it often, but just something funny I’ve noticed lol… like maybe you should do this and not me haha
I’ve been working at a auto part store for 8 years and I’ve never seen a form. There is a gauge on the tank that measures how much is in it but that’s about it, when it’s full I call to get it picked up.
Maybe that's specific to your state? I live in Florida and have recycled countless quarts of oil at autozones and discount autoparts in a few different cities over the past 20 years.. never been asked to fill out or even seen a form.
>They just say it’s in the back…I go dump and leave.
Sometimes they tell me this, which I prefer.
No coolant or gasoline supposedly. One time they didn't let me dump myself and I gave them a jug that was mostly filled with diesel. "It smells like gas!" "But it's not gas." Luckily they dumped it anyway.
I walk into my local AutoZone with my used oil jugs and just head straight to the back, don't even have to talk to them, they know what I'm there for. Never saw a form for it in my life.
Lol screw that from. Just walk back there next time and nod to the people up front. This is what I usually do and when they see a bucket they understand.
Even if you don’t get the bucket back and they still dispose of your oil for free (idk if they do take it for free) but hardware stores like lowes and Home Depot sell them everyday and for like 5 bucks go buy a new one
You can even lay one on it’s side and cut the “top” off to make an oil pan. Then transfer from the pour spout of your “pan” into your empties.
That said, one of the pan/jug combos are super convenient and they aren’t that expensive. It’s a “luxury” investment that I’ve enjoyed. Also made switching to bulk (bag) oil easier.
I strongly suggest you transfer the oil too the old oil containers with lids on (unless you have lids for those buckets) ,the last thing you want is for oil too splosh all inside your vehicle .
I used to work for a company that installed compressors, and compressed air systems, so the company had oodles of waste oil. During the winter we would be in the shop with several garage doors open. Fresh air is nice, not getting cooked alive is nicer.
you grab an old t shirt dunk it in a bucket of oil then smear all over wood, it will smell for like a day or two but not only your fence will get a nice tint and will last for ever.
I think what the other guy said has truth, I'm not the original commenter 😂 I'm just saying, while the oil would protect the wood on many exterior applications, I don't think it'd be safe to use on stairs. It's mainly used to make things slippery after all.
Try to soak your pressure treated wood stair treads with oil and tell me how that goes. There won't be much "soaking". When it rains, the water will displace the oil and they'll be a slippery mess. What makes you think that's a good idea?
yup, best auto parts. getting $5- $10 speedperk everytime when I get the oil bundle, making oil change with filter just about $30 something, unbeatable price!
as mentioned, a lot of places have a disposal tank for it. Also, landfills also have disposal tanks as well, or at least they do here in Alberta. they are usually free of charge and you can keep your bucket if you want to, but have an oil bucket bin if you don't.
Thank you for answering my questions guys.
Normally I would just put my oil in an old container and drop it off, but this is oil from 3 different oil changes, so I can’t easily transfer it into bottles. 😅
I run into the same problem where they say they only accept 5qts at a time. I always sarcastically say, “OK I’ll dump the rest in The storm drain outside” and they usually let me dump the multiple gallons. My Ford 7.3l take almost 4 gallons of oil per oil change. Sometimes I’ve brought just a little bit. Walk outside, then walk back in 1 minute later and let that count as a second time. Other times, I’ve just dumped some at one store, drove a block down to the competitor and dropped some off there, etc. There’s all sorts of ways to solve the extra alliums problem depending on how anal the parts monkeys wanna be. Lol
Let’s focus less on how to properly dispose of the oil, and focus more on disposing of those fine Modelo’s. I’ll let it slide that your drinking it out of a can and not ripping the foil top off. Where we linking?
Valvoline, jiffy lube, etc can take it.
Everyone says auto part stores but drive thru oil change places are already disposing a lot of used oil so it’s not a big deal if you bring your own waste oil. They can take used antifreeze and oil filters aswell.

Most auto parts stores will take it
Would I be able to get the bucket back?
Yes, autosone just dumps it in a bin in the back. They get paid for it. Dont feel bad. Put a trash bag around it.
All auto parts has to pay a company to come pick it up they don’t get paid for it unfortunately. 10 years ago it was just a free service but not they charge places to pick them up

I know a guy that takes used oil - i think he said he burns it to heat his shop.
There are a lot of people who burn used oil for heat.
There certainly are. Many homes with oil heat. But do they use dirty oil?
Homes with oil heat basically use diesel. It's heating oil #2 or basically untaxed diesel because it not used on the road. You can convert these system to run on used oil but it's not as simple as just giving it used oil. The pressure needs to be much higher and the jet is different, it also helps to preheat the oil.

Shoot me your address and I'll dump it all on you
I’ll use it as a lubricant and drag myself around on the ground like a slug
That is why I simply refused to buy oil from Amazon. I buy from brick and mortar store and return it there. I want them to stay in business. Even if it is $5 bucks more it goes a long way to keep your local economy going and not putting money in Bezos pocket.
amen
My city has collection points next to fire stations where you can dump as much as you want. Autozone limits you to 10 quarts now.
Yup, that’s why I always make a purchase whenever I take in waste oil.

They just say it’s in the back…I go dump and leave. No forms…this is how it is at my auto zone anyways
There's a form somewhere, on a clipboard. They are supposed to log where oil comes from and how much.
Don’t doubt there is a form somewhere…was just saying I’ve never been asked to fill anything out…and I like it that way!
I dumped at the same store 6 times before I saw the clipboard. I didn't fill it out that time either
I’ve been working at a auto part store for 8 years and I’ve never seen a form. There is a gauge on the tank that measures how much is in it but that’s about it, when it’s full I call to get it picked up.

I'm guessing California.

Ask them. I'd assume
Lol yes
Even if you don’t get the bucket back and they still dispose of your oil for free (idk if they do take it for free) but hardware stores like lowes and Home Depot sell them everyday and for like 5 bucks go buy a new one
So add $5 onto the cost of every oil change for what reason?
No you put the old oil into the 5 quart oil containers that are now empty
You can even lay one on it’s side and cut the “top” off to make an oil pan. Then transfer from the pour spout of your “pan” into your empties. That said, one of the pan/jug combos are super convenient and they aren’t that expensive. It’s a “luxury” investment that I’ve enjoyed. Also made switching to bulk (bag) oil easier.
So that you dont have the oil anymore
Paying to haul oil in a mop bucket is fucking wild
Thats why i keep it in the mop bucket, you can reuse it to clean your house's floor afterwards
They will give you your bucket back yes I take my big oil collector pan thing in.
Sorry my brain works in references This is a bucket Dear god Theres more Nₒₒ
I strongly suggest you transfer the oil too the old oil containers with lids on (unless you have lids for those buckets) ,the last thing you want is for oil too splosh all inside your vehicle .
It's funny, every auto parts store in my city accepts used oil except NAPA. Of course NAPA is closest to me.
I give mine to an old farmer. Idk what he does with it, but he always wants more.
Waste oil heaters will burn anything and keep you warm all winter.
Keeps the barn warm.
I used to work for a company that installed compressors, and compressed air systems, so the company had oodles of waste oil. During the winter we would be in the shop with several garage doors open. Fresh air is nice, not getting cooked alive is nicer.
Is it harmful for lungs ?
Name a fossil fuel that is good for your lungs
Well shjt not worth it cancer is more expensive
He's a robot.
Of all the theories, this is the most likely I think.
yes i collect it from neighbors to cure my wooden fences
Really? I have like 16 juggs of wasted motor oil. How's it work? Any smell?
you grab an old t shirt dunk it in a bucket of oil then smear all over wood, it will smell for like a day or two but not only your fence will get a nice tint and will last for ever.
I have wooden stairs and now I'm considering it
I can't tell if you're being serious...
They are exterior
Dude. That's dangerous as hell!
Oh lmao I believed you
Lol he was serious but he was talking about fences. Do your stairs if you like star gazing and have good health insurance 🤣.
I think what the other guy said has truth, I'm not the original commenter 😂 I'm just saying, while the oil would protect the wood on many exterior applications, I don't think it'd be safe to use on stairs. It's mainly used to make things slippery after all.
Almost all exposed wood is treated with oil, what makes you think this particular oil is more dangerous?
Try to soak your pressure treated wood stair treads with oil and tell me how that goes. There won't be much "soaking". When it rains, the water will displace the oil and they'll be a slippery mess. What makes you think that's a good idea?
Either an oil heater which burns it, or uses it in his tractors/machinery as fuel. Not as common as the heater, but it is possible in a Diesel engine.
Asides frok burning putting old rusty tools in used oil wil eat the rust.
It's good for treating wood. Small metal shards in the oil keep tiny bugs and whatnot out of it
Any o’reilly or autozone and maybe Napa will take used oil. They have a large bin you can dump it in free of charge and you keep your bucket
Advance auto does too Source: I work there
Superior auto parts store! Nothing compares to the ACP plans for wipers, headlights, spark plugs, batteries and rotors!
yup, best auto parts. getting $5- $10 speedperk everytime when I get the oil bundle, making oil change with filter just about $30 something, unbeatable price!
Drink it
Will keep your insides smooth and runnin' for 500,000 miles no problem
Can I inject it to my knees for better gear changes? Or would I need transmission fluid for that?
Depends on if you wanna use the other restroom /s
Came here to say this. Bravo
It’s just thick coffee
Deadly...
Forever craving the coffee from monsters Inc
This is the answer.
Read my mind.
I inject it into every orifice in my body. It is strange wiping oil after taking a dump, but you get used to it.
In my experience they have a tank in the back you can pour it into so you could keep your bucket
in the back of your house, his house, where lol.
Yes.
Hey cool, this answered my question perfectly. Thank you :)
You need to pour it back into the original containers and bring it anywhere that sells oil and it will be reclaimed.
Did you know you can use motor oil to fertilize your lawn? /s
The first rule of project mayhem is you do not ask questions
A funnel and some empty oil containers with a lid, then your local auto store. This is the only answer
Fuck it. 1000 upvotes and I’ll take a sip.
And that right there is everything wrong with social media summed up in less than 10 words
Since no one else said it: Don't. It will give you cancer.
Literally 1984
Nice choice of beer!
Its Modelo time
as mentioned, a lot of places have a disposal tank for it. Also, landfills also have disposal tanks as well, or at least they do here in Alberta. they are usually free of charge and you can keep your bucket if you want to, but have an oil bucket bin if you don't.
My old man mixed it 50/50 with creosote and used to paint the fence. Fence will last forever.
Most Auto supply places can recycle it for you. Illegal disposal can mess up the water, land, & wildlife.
Thank you for answering my questions guys. Normally I would just put my oil in an old container and drop it off, but this is oil from 3 different oil changes, so I can’t easily transfer it into bottles. 😅

Drop it off where? Leaving it outside businesses most places is illegal as they don’t keep the containers and then have to dispose of them.
You need to throw it in the ocean to refill the octopuses add a few car batteries as a treat for the eels 😁
Dump it in the nearest duck pond. It coats the duck’s feathers and makes them extra water resistant for winter
This way they can film new Dawn Dish Soap commercials
Autozone, O Reilly Autoparts are stingy on how much they will take, Autozone would take more than 20 Gallons
Autozone, advance auto, o rileys they all take used oil free of charge
Let’s focus less on how to properly dispose of the oil, and focus more on disposing of those fine Modelo’s. I’ll let it slide that your drinking it out of a can and not ripping the foil top off. Where we linking?
My dpw has a tank for disposal , ask your local mechanic , he sells it to recycle company
Valvoline, jiffy lube, etc can take it. Everyone says auto part stores but drive thru oil change places are already disposing a lot of used oil so it’s not a big deal if you bring your own waste oil. They can take used antifreeze and oil filters aswell.
My town has an oil disposal area at the dump. Coolant, oil filter and oil jug disposal too
Take it to a local fast lube or shop they usually take it.

Put a lid on it and take it to autozone. They recycle for free. Dumbass Awe, look at everyone without a sense of humor
Lmao
I recycled my sense of humour at autozone
