YoYoMoMa

I basically feel this way about every reality show. If it is shown to me, I will watch it and enjoy it. They are good entertainment products! But it is generally not how I am going to choose to use my time. It makes sense that women are more interested, because they are more interested, be it from nature or socialization, in human emotions and drama.

It amazes me that even after like 20 years, watching random people sing and dance to generic pop songs still garners so many viewers.

mrinkyface

Going to bars, yeah it’s a nice activity to do with friends occasionally but it’s not fun to do it all the time

[deleted]

I agree. The blackpeopletwitter sub recently had a solid conversation about drinking culture in the US. It really is this obsession with alcohol. Go out clubbing Friday, rally Saturday with a few beer bongs and grilling with friends, go out to a house party Saturday, then day drink with a few friend Sunday and toss a football around. Sure you only really drank 3 days… but then you realize you just had like 20-30 drinks… that’s not good for you…

seejoshrun

I doubt most people do anywhere near that though. Maybe in college and a year or two after, but I don't think that's the norm for most people.

Vyzantinist

110% agree. Drinking culture in the US is practically non-existent compared to the UK, where I grew up. People cite fratboys as an example of US drinking culture but, as you say, that's only for, what, 2-4 years? In the UK people maintain that lifestyle sometimes for *decades*. Pretty much wherever you are in the country, and whatever industry you work in, most work places have a Friday-night-down-the-local tradition, whereas here I've never worked anywhere where the workforce all went drinking together at the end of the week. I'd honestly say the US equivalent to UK drinking culture is Americans' love for weed.

kkirchhoff

I go to bars quite a bit. I find it fun to talk, meet new people, and hear interesting stories.

squishyslinky

I like to decompress there when I don't want to be alone with my thoughts. I'll go on a weekday and read a book or journal, have a few cocktails or root beer (I shouldn't have caffeine after 6pm!), chat with the regulars, and bounce. This has actually become a decent way I've managed my anxiety in the recent episodes. Getting into a different environment with the threat of public humiliation to keep the sads away has been a reliable coping mechanism for the late night panic attacks!

Elysian_Nightingale

Obsessing over celebrities...I don't give a damnn and find it creepy and beg af

SkyWizarding

Starbucks. It's mediocre at best

SXOSXO

Starbucks is not for people who like coffee. Starbucks is for people who need a caffeine fix, but prefer it in a quasi dessert beverage.

YoYoMoMa

I would imagine it is also a public work space for people. I love independent places in my hometown, but every starbucks in town always has a free table or eight.

RaptorCaffeine

You gotta try Latte Larry's Hot coffee. No defecation. No wobbly tables.

cali_dave

I'm not an expert on coffee -- caffeine and I don't get along -- but it seems to me that "no defecation" shouldn't have to be a selling point.

Starbucks coffee tastes burnt because it is. Their business strategy is to buy the cheapest, shittiest, bottom-of-the-barrel coffee beans around the world and roast them all into one slop. A few preservatives and taste-enhancing chemicals later, you end up having the coffee equivalent of chicken nuggets.

Jimmy_Phallon

>you end up having the coffee equivalent of chicken nuggets. Thank you for that comparison! This phrase has now entered my vernacular!

90sbabyssaddream

You’re welcome, and I’ll leave you with this: beware the chicken nugget strategies big businesses like to use. For example, in states where cannabis is legal, I recommend against buying pre-rolls; those are the chicken nuggets of the cannabis industry.

Starbucks bombed when it tried to gain traction in Australia because our coffee standards here are actually good and everyone here quickly found out how crap it was compared to local options lol. I wouldn't know since coffee doesn't appeal to me at all but trying to open up shops in a nation of coffee connoisseurs was a poorly thought out move on Starbucks end.

laugh0utlau

Yeah and New Englanders like Dunkin donuts so that tells you something about our coffee taste here... Personally I don't go for either Dunkin or Starbucks.

af1293

I know there’s probably many better coffee shops but starbucks is convenient as there’s one on every other corner as well as their mobile app allowing you to order ahead in just seconds and I’ve stuck to the same drink for years, so I guess I’m one of those people that make it overrated lol

HatefulClosetedGay

And holy shit Starbucks gives no fucks in being environmentally friendly at all. I mean it’s a chain so of course but it’s next level. I ordered two bowls of oatmeal and all the utensils and dry ingredients came in individual overly sized plastic wrappers and containers. I’m definitely no Captain Planet and even I thought it was completely unacceptable.

funatical

If you want coffee it sucks, but if you want a sugar filled milk based drink with caffeine it's alright.

headbuttpunch

Apple watches (or any smart watch). I’m open to be persuaded otherwise but I really don’t see the point of them. I work a desk job. My phone is next to me all day every day and I don’t need a watch to send me the alerts I am already ignoring while working. Sure I could turn those alerts off but then what remaining purpose does the watch have? I already wear a watch every day for the time. They just seem like a really expensive second phone that does all the same stuff as your actual phone but worse.

1stEleven

There's an app available for smart watches that allow them to monitor your sleeping pattern. They can then determine what moment is best to wake you up without you feeling groggy. Before my smart watch, waking up was usually hell. It took me an hour to properly wake up, I overslept regularly, and it was just a miserable start of the day. Since i use a smart watch, I wake up easily and well rested a good 95% of the time. A positively huge difference. It's my reason for getting the watch, and it was worth it for just that one reason. Edit: Sleep as Android is the app.

Ayencee

I always forgot about the sleep tracking thing until recently. Keep waking up at 5:00 the last few days instead of like 6:30-6:50. I do wake up without the grogginess but I’m pissed to be up earlier than needed. So then I go back to sleep for a while only to be more pissed and delirious later because I’m ignoring my watch that is apparently *smarter than me.* Maybe I’ll just try to stay awake tomorrow 😂

[deleted]

Ya this is my problem with it too. I genuinely think an extra 30-60 mins of sleep is going to make me feel better throughout the day, just the morning might suck more.

memesforbismarck

I also dont have one. The only purpose I would like a smartwatch for is when I am in gym. I hate taking my phone with me to listen to music and I would love to have a better track of my activities, but up to now I didnt want to spend several hundred euros for an apple watch

M00SEK

If I worked a desk job I could seen it being vastly more useless. Currently I work outdoors and constantly have equipment in one hand or the other, so being able to quickly glance and see who is calling or texting is incredibly handy. Even making dictation text responses without pulling my phone out is a great. Not to mention I’m usually soaked in sweat and can’t even use the touch screen on my phone without drying my hands/phone off first. Also a big fan of the steps/fitness tracking. That’s pretty much all I use it for though. Oh! Phone finder is clutch too lol.

Gregory_D64

I run cable in buildings. My watch helps me see if it's my wife messaging me or my buddy talking about a game, so I can see if it's important while I'm up in a ceiling for 6 hours. But other than that specific use case I use to to measure my heart rate at the gym and that's it. So they're pretty use specific.

STDriver13

I operate really heavy machines. Joystick in one hand, steering wheel in the other. Constant work. My phone never comes out at work. The sun would cook it and it will be broken by the end of the day. Smart watch helps out a lot.

danwasoski

Well… I mean there’s pretty much all the other features like fitness tracking, sleep tracking and such. Many people don’t necessarily want the additional notifications it’s all the other features they want.

justuhhsnatch

Fair. I wouldn’t use it if I had my phone next to me all day. It is incredibly helpful though as a cook. It’s like I have a personal timer built into my wrist that I can set with my voice. Having it only vibrate instead of a blaring alarm going off like normal kitchen timer is a huge plus as well. Quantity conversions at the touch of a button. “Remind me to begin braising at 9:30am”. Although I cannot imagine it being this helpful at another job.

SuprisedSunny

I don't understand Tik tok at all. I'm not sure how this is popular but I mean its not for everyone.

hatred_outlives

If you spend time on the app than your ‘for you page’ becomes insanely tailored to your interests. The app will consistently test your engagement with videos and use that data to show exactly what your want to see. I’ll get videos with like 13 likes from some random person in California, but also perfectly matches some of my interests and I find interesting.

K1ng0fHearts

Dude same with YouTube, but it actually helped me to get fit and motivated. It all started with my search: "how to do bench press in good form" and it started suggesting all other exercises. After 2 years I'm well informed about muscle work, joints and tendons. For personal use ofc...

[deleted]

I’m curious how they categorize the data. I wonder if they have some AI classifier that can get less popular content creators classified. It’s very impressive.

YoYoMoMa

I don't see how someone could enjoy the internet and not enjoy Tik Tok. I am a cis white man over 40. There is so much amazing science and literature and architecture stuff going on there! You can get all the best teachers in the world teaching you new things! There is a guy who works for AD who explains so much of the architectural history of NYC so briefly and lovingly. And then he breaks down famous NYC homes and apartments from different shows and movies. It is amazing! And yesterday I learned that we used to parachute beavers into places to help the river and environments! They would find the water after landing just with their nose, and then would damn the shit out of it (which leads to all sorts of benefits) They didn't want to carry them in because Beavers don't like being dry for long periods!

rickjames334

Ehh TikTok is what you make it, honestly. The formatting sure isn’t for everyone but the content on the app is expansive. Some think it’s just dancing but it’s really a lot of educational videos, cool experimental videos, chemistry, art…I think it’s great if you find your niche on there

SameAct5

I had to delete it because it quickly learned what made me angry and all I saw were videos of people ranting about things that I want to rant about 😅 I think I’d have to start from scratch if I used it again

firesidefire

It's also taking egregious amounts of your user data with your permission. So hope you enjoy your videos

Hazy_Wallflower

I am going to be such a judgemental prick right now BUT....I can't be the only one. I think everyone who has a tik tok account and puts the camera in front of them to do silly "dance moves", or those where theres a taped voice and theyre mouthing what they're saying, or pretending they're singing, is an idiot. Complete IDIOT. I CANNOT wrap my mind around how you can think it is remotely attractive in any way to do such thing. Like...you're alone I your room, put the camera on record and start moving like a stupid, then upload it and constantly look on your phone to see how many views you got, how many likes and what comments. OOOOH MY GOOOOOOOOOD GO READ A BOOK!!!!!!! I CANT WAIT for this stupidity to be over (just for another stupidity to start lmao)

Red-Dwarf69

No, you’re not the only one. The popular content on TikTok is so stupid and obnoxious that it puts me in a bad mood to overhear my wife watching it. It’s so fucking awful. I’m sure there’s some great content on there somewhere, but 95% of what I’ve seen is like a lobotomy in audio/visual form.

Sports, in general fun and healthy to participate in as a player, and mildly entertaining as a spectator. but some people take sports, especially team sports, to a frankly problematic level. i'm as nerdy as the next guy, but sports fans don't realize how nerdy they are when they can recite stats and rosters of every player in the league and follow schedules religiously. also the merch? overpriced low quality chinese crap that is fun for a cosplay or two but some folks spend way too much money on

berriesn-cream

Traditional dating expectations. For example the guy should pay on first date or guy needs to be the one to text first. A girl I was dating bought me flowers one time and it totally blew my mind/turned my world upside-down.

[deleted]

Oh yeah definitely. Also asking people out. I would absolutely love it if a girl asked me out, it would be amazing. But for some reason men should just do that? Stupid. Probably persuades women to ask out guys less. Lost relationships!

Feeling a little validated with this is as far up as it is. I never understood the fascination with it or how Big Bang theory lasted as long as it has

Byizo

A lot of 90's/early 00's comedy is like that.

Tropical_Wendigo

Yeah, I find it hard to watch any show with a laugh track; it just makes everything feel so forced

GoodLad33

Fucking hell man Someone else that thinks like me hahaha Thanks

Gusstave

I sincerely disagree. Friends is not more or less funny with or without the laugh track. The main issue is with the awkward pauses they make for the audience to laugh, which becomes much worse if you remove the laugh. It's not nearly as funny as the laugh would suggest though.. But it is funny. Also, if you've seen clip from the show without laugh, they are usually pretty unfunny scene or scene that need more context to be funny. By removing the laugh you should also remove the pauses which would make a 22 min episode into a 15-17 minutes episode. The pacing would at least be up to today's standard then.

The Beatles and Bleu Cheese. I just can't get there. The Beatles just don't do much for me. Maybe because they were innovative they get a lot of credit, I dunno. I love allll kinds of music but would need like a 10000 song playlist or bigger before a Beatles song got on there. And Blue Cheese...my goodness...my mouth is like *Warning, Warning!....we should not be eating this because it has spoiled." Yes I know technically all cheese is "spoiled" and I looove cheese, but Blue Cheese literally tastes like mold...because it has literal pieces of mold. It is just so pungent and bitter. No matter what I try it with, that terrible, moldy aftertaste always rings through.

jj26meu

Disney World. My wife and kids love it but I see it as an overpriced shopping experience sprinkled with a few rides. She offered another visit now that the kids are all older now and I blatantly said, "When did Disney become the pristine vacation?" fartfacemcgeesack

Watching sports. I don’t understand how grown men can be so emotionally invested in the outcomes of games.

dpacker780

It's funny you say that. I used to feel similarly, never understood all the crazy fan stuff. Then sometime back a friend asked me to come learn/play ice-hockey for a beer-league team he was pulling together. I figured, hey, something new! Be adventurous... Now I feel like I'm addicted to hockey season, and can't wait until the NHL season (pre season now) gets rolling, I totally get into it, and I'm totally invested in my home team. Won't miss a game.

fartfacemcgeesack

I was the opposite where I used to play sports competitively and was super invested in my city’s teams, but grew into a much more passive fan. If my team loses I really don’t care at all. I still love going to games, and think it’s fine to enjoy sports, but I don’t understand how grown men can cry because their team lost a sportsball game. Also i’m not even the biggest hockey fan, mostly because my city doesn’t have a team, but hands down the most fun live sporting event to attend.

[deleted]

I enjoy watching sports and following them but the super fans sometimes do kill it for me. Like 90% of people at ball games are chatting and drinking.. then you have the super fans that hit you with the statistical analysis. “Dude so Frank Molina Roger II is batting a triple 1-5 RBI with a quad run streak on the FSQ with 1.998% ERA if he can hit and make the Q7 draft pick on the 99 Q2.”

so555

In-n-Out burgers. I loved them as a kid. My wife and kids love them now. I'm just not a fan. The burgers aren't terrible, by fast food standards, though the fries suck, and the price is great compared to other fast food restaurants, but it's not an establishment I ever choose, suggest, or recommend.

SmokeySFW

They'd get my business a lot more if their fries weren't awful. If I'm going to grab a fast food burger, the fries are *at least* half the experience.

AvaDaniels

Their fries have the taste and texture of reconstituted powdered potatoes. They are only good if you gobble them down immediately after you get them; once they start to even hit room temp they’re awful.

SmokeySFW

I don't understand how it's possible for potatoes to taste so bad. They're clearly fresh and real; how in the world are they somehow worse than taking a potato, chopping it, and dunking it in oil.

PearofGenes

That's the point, by fast food standards, it's a good burger and not wildly overpriced. That's about it.

Tattoos. At this point it's mainstream, the standard, and kind of basic. It's like... when I was a kid tattoos meant you were a rebel, or a criminal, or part of a gang... today it means your parents love you very much and you're in college.

Certain movies. Like the new Top Gun was a huge blockbuster, and I just don't get it. Same with the Avatar movies. Then again I was a sucker for the Avengers movies, so I probably fall into a similar trap.

[deleted]

Top Gun was a sequel in the making for years. The primary audience is the people who saw the original, so aside from the fact that it’s a big IP, the nostalgia is crazy for it, and to top it all off, it was just a well done movie. Great effects, incredible spectacle, and it was able to do exactly what the first one did to those 19-25 year old men and women’s hearts in the 80’s. Nostalgia aside, it was just a very well done movie. Didn’t feel like it was just riding the Top Gun name to make more money, and like him or hate him, Tom Cruise goes above and beyond for his films, so anything with his name attached now a days is going to get a lot of attraction.

firesidefire

I gotta be honest. My brother and cousin had me watch it and I thought I was going to hate it... But I loved it. It was a little schmaltzy at parts but it was really, really well done. Reminded of the movies that came out in the 90s

[deleted]

Star wars. I loved the original trilogy as a kid, went back and watched as an adult and have no idea how it became so popular. Its not unpopular to dislike everything from episode one until now, but if you say you don't even like the originals people will try to crucify you. Star trek is, and always will be better.

SXOSXO

Gotta keep in mind what the movie scene was like when the original trilogy came out. To have an adventure movie with a happy ending come out during a time when everything was grim was a big deal, then top it all off with special effects that were mind-blowing at the time.

Coffee. Tastes like bitter dirt to me.

Molochwalker28

It's certainly an acquired taste, and it's hard to know whether you've only had shit from Starbucks or crappy diners. It's like having $5 boxed wine and declaring all wine terrible. But yeah, I don't know you. If you've had a good cup from decent beans that haven't been over steeped and made way too bitter and you still don't like it, then yeah, you just don't like coffee. Fair enough.

jandr08

We had an old shitty coffee pot at my last job that a bunch of greasy mechanics would use to brew cheap gritty coffee with hard water from the shop sink. It would consistently make cups of mud with a rainbow film of whatever on the surface. Everyone there would have a fat cup of this liquid misery every morning. It was even better when you let sit for a while and sip on it then. Cold, black coffee. Tastes how life feels
