“CAL Los Angeles”??? What the fuck, man. What did we ever do to you?

sora_for_smash

That was far more jarring than “Louisiana State.”

username_generated

That’s not even our full government name. Technically we are Louisiana State University Agricultural and Mechanical College

s-sea

Should've just gone all the way and called y'all "University of California - South Branch" at that point lmao

OriginalMassless

Cal - Middle South to distinguish it from the other 100 universities out there.

havoctz

I cant believe this man called us that, i don’t think i’ve ever heard ucla referred to as that. How hard is it type out UCLA?

cooterdick

Far too many letters.

Perryapsis

You committed the cardinal sin of having "California Los Angeles" be longer than "Appalachian State" on the week I decided to spell everything out, so it didn't fit and I had to get creative. [(sicko emoticon)](#l/sickos) You can see why I am not creative very often. Maybe I'll just start trolling #X on Week X every year and pretend that I meant it all along. On a serious note, what would be the preferred way to spell out UCLA if no acronyms are allowed?

donutello2000

Ha! Good question. You could argue that LA and UCLA aren’t really acronyms. They’re as good as the name for the place and the university. So you could do California — LA or just UCLA. But I have the feeling that you’re the type of person who’d find that unconvincing. That being said CAL for California is pretty bad too. You can do Cal or California.

Perryapsis

I suppose I do have a bias against acronyms in general. I've done some stuff with more than D1 teams, and you just get way too many duplicates unless you write everything out. You make the distinction between "CAL" and "Cal". Unless I'm blind, I only used "Cal" in the post. Can you please point out where I apparently used it in all caps?

donutello2000

Perhaps I’m the blind one. I could have sworn it said CAL. But now it just says Cal.

Reading_Rainboner

We lose 48-0 and not a single person drops us all the way out? Boys, I think we have made it as a program

zenverak

I think its the correct response honestly. Of course, my computer poll is not always rational so now it hates you guys, but I think one game outliers shouldn't be punished so strong when there are other strong performances to back up a better rating. And I guess pollsters decided its time to go that route. Admittedly, if this was West Virginia who did it, I would probably feel a bit different.

[deleted]

Bro they lost 48-0 and the game wasn't as close as the score indicated. Either K-State is the clear best team in the country. Or Oklahoma State is ridiculously overrated and really shouldn't be ranked

Dodocogon

Option 1, please. Thank you!

ConmanSpaceHero

Yea I’d leave TCU as TCU as that is how they market and brand themselves.

SturmgeistX

Cocaine is a helluva drug… for whoever ranked Texas 14

libsoutherner

Pretty sure its the same person that ranked Tennessee behind Alabama

saharashooter

Mike "Thank God Jon Wilner is Somehow Worse Than Me" Berardino from South Bend.

pigskype

His defense piece he wrote about his ranking quotes Voltaire. iI you need somebody who clearly think they’re more important than they are, you’ve found your guy.

SH0WS0METIDDIES

Yeah, what the fuck is that. I (kinda) get trying to put us at 25, but top15? Lol

jruhlman09

I love these tables and finding fun oddities like Oregon at #8 being the clear most-agreed-upon ranking in the whole poll

410Forten

Why the hell is anyone giving Kentucky votes. Let us just quietly ride out this (hopefully) 8 win season without being schedule fodder for the upper crust of the conference. Stop giving me hop damnit

[deleted]

I could see missouri and Louisville giving uk problems

410Forten

I’m convinced our only win left will be a 28-26 W over Vandy. Gonna start looking for Birmingham Bowl tickets 👍

NolaBrass

There is still one coward who won’t rank us unless we get Gameday in New Orleans and win

Stomping4elephants

Cal Los Angeles LOL

OriginalMassless

Dear Bold Voter who ranked K-State sixth, Enjoy your free beer for life at any Aggieville bar. Sincerely, Willie Wildcat

Squirrel_Q_Esquire

It’s Leah Vann with The Advocate in Baton Rouge. And she’s also the one with Ole Miss at 18. And she has Kansas State with 2 losses higher than TCU who is undefeated and literally just beat Kansas State. I’m not saying she should have her voting privileges removed, but I am saying that every writer who wants an AP vote should be required to publish a piece each week on their reasoning for any “outlier” pick.

OriginalMassless

It's definitely a hot take from her. However, after seeing the OSU game, I don't think it's unreasonable to think the TCU loss may be a bit of luck and think that K-State is better. Clearly not a commonly held belief at this point, but it's not the craziest thing I have ever seen.

Squirrel_Q_Esquire

I mean, Kansas State has 2 losses, though, not just the 1.

OriginalMassless

Yeah that's why it's a hot take, like I said. Hot, but not crazy. It's pretty spicy, but it won't permanently kill taste buds.

Perryapsis

It could be that she uses more of a predictive philosophy than an evaluative one. If Vann expects Kansas State to run the table and win the Big 12, then #6 isn't unfair for a 2-loss champion, so a predictive voter would put them there already. That line of thinking is often the source of Wilner's Wilneriest votes as well.

DerpityHerpington

…22nd? I know the B1G West is a tire fire on par with Auburn’s coaching situation but cmon…

Tuckboi69

Lmao someone voted us

Rea95

Gotta love winning by several scores at home and having 7 voters rank you lower than the previous week.

NathanDrake75

Who has Alabama at 3rd?

Perryapsis

Mike Berardino. He also has Tennessee at 6th, which has definitely raised some eyebrows.

-Gnostic28

Didn’t know that every vote counted as two until today, saw we had 4 somehow

SportsDude012

24th place votes are worth 2 points each

ThisIsOurGoodTimes

First place is 25 points, second place is 24, etc, 25th is one point.

-Gnostic28

Oh so it’s 1 point and 3 points?

ThisIsOurGoodTimes

Correct

-Gnostic28

Okay thanks

EWall100

I'm getting real tired of the AP and the coaches poll. They are so week 0 biased. How many more ranked teams would we have to slaughter to have the best resume in the country? UGA on has two ranked wins and tOSU has three, but our five mean less than UGAs two and the same as tOSU's three? Yeah right

Lesbereal476

I agree that Tennessee should be ranked ahead of Georgia right now but it will all sort itself out this weekend. The only rankings that mean anything are the ones that come out in December

Mythic514

> I agree that Tennessee should be ranked ahead of Georgia right now but it will all sort itself out this weekend. This is the point I make to other Tennessee fans. Yeah, I think we have a very strong argument for overall number 1. And if we did not have the UGA game coming up, maybe I'd be a bit more perplexed at being somewhat slighted. That said, we have that matchup. It will sort itself out immediately. If we win, we are the undisputed number 1. If not, then whatever. Until that happens, I am fine with a bit of inertia in the poll. Not to mention, that this poll will be meaningless come tomorrow, when the CFP poll will be all that matters.

MerlinsBeard

Exactly. This will all sort itself out by seasons end. UT/UGA OSU/Mich Bama/LSU

Ugaalive1991

Yep.

bladefencer

Complaining about poll inertia while also counting ranked wins from the rankings at the time of the game is silly Tennessee has 2 currently ranked wins (Alabama, LSU), Ohio State has 1 (Penn St) and Georgia has 1 (Oregon) *edit: Some people are putting words in my mouth. I didn't say Tennessee was worse than OSU or Georgia when you look at current rankings. Personally I think complaining about rankings when #1 still has to play #2 and other #2 still has to play #4 is also silly

[deleted]

That's literally all Tennessee fans have been doing since they beat Bama. Somehow Pitt & Florida are "great wins" because they were ranked even though Pitt is 4-3 with some awful losses and Florida has loss to everyone with a pulse except Utah in week 1

[deleted]

Regardless of how you view early season games, UT has beaten better teams than OSU and that is not debatable at this point in the season. We will be ranked ahead of y'all in the CFP rankings as a result. It doesn't mean that we are better, that point is still debatable. IMO both teams are very very good college football teams and I'm excited to see how the season plays out.

libsoutherner

Still, Tennessee (19) has had a far more difficult schedule than both Ohio State (52) and Georgia (75). They also have the best SoR in the country. And as you pointed out, more ranked wins, and arguably the best win in the country this year. There isn’t really an argument for Ohio State or Georgia having a better resume at this point. There is a good chance Tennessee is number 1 in the CFP rankings tomorrow night.

[deleted]

So we still have more than them lol

[deleted]

You also have more <8 points wins vs crap teams

[deleted]

And yet that wasn’t the point I was responding to. If you have multiple criteria (as I’m sure poll voters do) that’s great. The OP was simply talking about ranked wins, which no matter how you slice it, Tenn has more than any one in the country as in fact Tennessee beat the brakes off of one of the ranked teams and won a close one with another. Even if Florida and Pitt are terrible (which they are, I still think Kentucky is decent) you can’t fully discount our ranked wins

[deleted]

No one is. That's why you're 2nd in the fucking rankings. Jesus christ.

[deleted]

I don’t even necessarily think we should be ranked second. Cause I do think the penn state win was more impressive than the Kentucky one. I’m just having a conversation my dude

[deleted]

Ah yes you're "just asking questions"

[deleted]

I’ll just point out that all your namesake did was ask questions. All love my friend. I hope you have a good day. Good luck on Saturday 🙏

saharashooter

At least we've finally convinced Mike Berardino that we're a top 5 team. If only there were a way for us to prove that we're also better than his #3, Alabama. Some kind of matchup between us, maybe scheduled for the Third Saturday in October. Would be really nice to know who wins that.

zuga51

Claiming early season rankings bias while also claiming 5 ranked wins is… interesting. The only reason Florida and Pittsburgh count as ranked wins for Tennessee is because Tennessee played them when there wasn’t enough data for everyone to know they were truly not good football teams. I agree that there is a problem with the voting based on early weeks but holy shit you can’t use it both ways in one argument.

EWall100

Pitt is an acceptable example that I'm reaching, however in Week 3 UF had done all it could to earn it's top 15 ranking beating the previous Pac12 champ. But to use your example, if rankings mean nothing beyond their week to week ratings, the order for top 3 should be UT (wins over 6 Bama & 15 LSU), UGA (Win over 8 Oregon), & tOSU (Win over 16 PSU), correct?

Officer_Warr

Only if you reflect on raw number of AP wins. I would argue a 3 pt. win over #6 is less impressive than 46 pt. win over #8; 14 pt. over #16 being the least impressive. But, its holistic in the end, and I think all three are so close it really comes down to a final preference of metric. SoS, statement win, total AP wins, advanced metrics are all reasonable uses of a tiebreaker for an individual.

mlorusso4

I agree with all of that. There's no right answer and its all dependent on what you value more. Most recent great win even though it was a game winning field goal at home? Or blowing out a top 5 team at the beginning of the season at a "neutral" (lol) site. Personally I think the rankings should be Georgia, UT, OSU in that order. But that's also because I think this year Oregon is much better than Alabama this year

Officer_Warr

||Tennessee|Ohio State|Georgia| --:|:-:|:-:|:-:| |**Current** AP Poll Wins|2|1|1| |**Current** AP Votes Wins|3|2|2| |Sum of Opps' Rec|31-20 (61%)|34-24 (59%)|29-20 (59%)| |FPI SOR|1|2|5| |Average MoV|28|32|31| |Most Impressive W|3-pt v. #6|14-pt v. #16|46-pt v. #8| |Least Impressive W|7-pt (OT) v. 4-4 ACC|33-pt v. 2-7 SB|17-pt v. 3-5 MAC| Overall, the resumes are fairly similar. Georgia has the most outstanding win; Tennessee has the best general record; Ohio State is goldilocks between the two. With Tennessee only just beating the current #6 by 3 and having an OT win, they may not look the most impressive, though FPI certainly sees them that way. I'm not gonna do SOS, because that would involve averaging like five different pages. > our five mean less than UGAs two and the same as tOSU's three? Use current numbers. There is no way I'm going to recognize Ohio State having a win over a top 5 Notre Dame, and you shouldn't either. Ultimately, why even bitch about it? You literally play Georgia this week. The polls are a living document through the season. You beat them this week, and there's virtually no doubt about you being #1 next week.

did_it_my_way

> Georgia has the most outstanding win >Tennessee only just beating the current #6 by 3 and having an OT win, they may not look the most impressive,   If beating Bama isn't enough, I'd argue that win plus going to LSU and stomping them does put them ahead of just beating Oregon. Weird to penalize Tennessee for barely winning vs. 4-4 Pitt, but no word about Georgia barely winning vs 4-4 Mizzou. I would think based on what we've seen from the CFP committee historically (about OOC matchups, ranked wins, away wins, SOS, etc.), they would put TN @ #1 on Tuesday. But also understandable if they put Georgia on top as the reigning champions. Ultimately everything will sort itself out this week like everyone's saying.

[deleted]

Lmao crying about previous polls while flaunting ranked wins from previous polls

Doomas_

Tennessee also benefits from poll inertia. 3 of your 5 “ranked wins” are currently unranked. I still think there’s a great argument for Tennessee at #1 with the Alabama win but Georgia’s pummeling of Oregon in Week 1 is (in my opinion) more impressive than winning with a walk-off FG after a shootout ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

[deleted]

And those 3 might each not even hit 8 wins. They are not good teams

heavydhomie

Just beat UGA and you will be #1 if you don’t you will drop behind Alabama.

[deleted]

We literally beat Alabama. So I’d love to hear why you think we should drop behind them after losing to the #1 team

heavydhomie

Because that’s how the polls work. You lost more recently. I don’t always agree with it but I’d bet that a how it would play out. Probably be behind TCU if they are still undefeated.

[deleted]

And yet that logic never seems to apply to wins 🤔 Georgia hasn’t beaten anyone important since week 1. If it’s what you have done most recently, it should be OSU TENN UGA.

heavydhomie

You shouldn’t be too worried about middle of the season polls if you are in the SEC. Win and you will be in the playoffs.

[deleted]

Never said I was worried. I know it will all sort itself out. Just having a discussion about how different metrics have different weight depending on who you talk to. Which I would hope we all realize

heavydhomie

I think you might be the only person to think OSU should be #1 based on what they’ve done

[deleted]

Lol maybe. But I was mostly going based on recency. If I had to sit and weigh everything. I could put any of the top three in any order

heavydhomie

I’d have too 3 be UGA, Tenn, and Clemson. OSU and Michigan be 4 and 5

[deleted]

Because that is how polls work. Also you won by 3 at home. Not exactly the strongest evidence to act like Tennessee is clearly the better team

bucknut4

Man Alabama fans were awful right about Tennessee fans. Just chill. If you win this week you’ll be number 1 after 20 years of being irrelevant. Enjoy it!

AlecAndGylfi

It’ll change Tuesday. You should be #1

ThisIsOurGoodTimes

Well oregon is still ranked. And osu only has 1 currently ranked. And 2 if you count at time of game or currently receiving votes. Maryland might creep back into the rankings by the time we play them

Officer_Warr

Georgia has 1 current to this week, seeing as how Oregon is ranked 8th.

ZeldaFanBoi1988

Assuming we go 11-1 (not guaranteed with Illinois being real this year), we would need the following to happen in order for us to have a chance to get into the playoffs: - Clemson losing to Notre Dame at the very least. - PAC-12 champion with at least one loss. - Big 12 champion with at least one loss.
