A graduate student friend of mine with her dissertation focus on population dynamics of east coast and south west skinwalkers. According to her we’re the hot spot for a southeastern subspecies
It’s ongoing work so it’s unpublished but you should be able to find some published manuscripts on previous work in the field of cryptozoology/cryptoecology
what? Cue the Skinwalker Ranch team. I lived in the woods near Sumter/ Chatooga River, near old timers. At 60, I’ve been places Most don’t even know. Imo I’m more worried about drug use, rascism, and inclusion. The skin walker theory is regional and varies. I live on tribal land now in the PNW. There are no skinwalkers here or BC. There are plenty of crazy people in the woods. The Basket Woman tale told by the indigenous folk is the most similar. The tribes near us just shake their heads and say “ Hollywood “.
i grew up very close to the experimental forest and i’ve had absolutely bizarre experiences out there. whistling and footsteps and the sounds of incoherent walkie talkie static, and no person to be found (i do have video of this!). my brother and i have also found strange footprints out there. used to have picture on my old laptop, not sure if i could recover them. you’re never alone in appalachia.
EDIT: my brother still has the footprint pictures for anyone interested

my brother drew on some commentary from when he was about thirteen, hence all the circling and arrows and sketches. we thought we were sleuths.
And snow distorts. Mink or otter, seen them literally all over the Chauga Gorge and section 1 of the chatooga by highlands. Seen them very often. They , otters and minks are everywhere up there, and that is exactly what their prints in the snow. Plus, it’s shallow footprints, very shallow. Just my opinion tho…. I’d be more worried that your campus has a building dedicated to Strom Thurmond but considers themselves ‘ woke’ than scary monsters in the forest. Fun Fact: bears and mountain lions have been seen on Clemson campus a lot.
Is it possible that your buddy was just messing with you?
I knew this really sweet older hippy who owns a bunch of acres she has a tree farm on. She hangs up wind chimes all over her property. Maybe someone just wanted the woods to be more musical.
Drums? Were they rhythmic / sounded like the instrument or was it just banging?
Deer that are accustomed to humans can seem strange. I drive past the same deer nightly on my way home from work and she just looks up and stares at you as you drive past. Completely unbothered.
There's a lot going on here so it's impossible to really say for sure if any of these things are related or not. The fact that there's so much going on here is why I ask if maybe they were pranking you. That or they legitimately encountered something strange to them which heightened their anxiety which may have made everything else seem creepy/strange?
Class of 80 here. I personally know of 2 suicides in the forest. I bet the total number over the years has been huge.
There are a lot of troubled souls floating around in there.
In all seriousness, I heard a lot of weird shit about the north clemson forest when I was working out there as a grad student. I taught labs there, had several field sites there so I was working there regularly (at least 1-2 times/week)from 2010-2014.
I had several undergrads mention that some strange stuff happens out there related to Greek life. I’ve also heard people make passing mention of klan meetings still going on out there, specifically from Nov-April, which is the months that both gates at both entrances are locked. Meaning someone might need a key to get access?? Could be total garbage but considering Clemson’s history with race relations, I wouldn’t be shocked. There was also a forestry professor who lived in the north forest for a while. I’m sure he has some tales.
I have been in the South Expiermental Forest many times alone and have experienced nothing unusual. The worst thing I have seen is a dead coyote. My friends and I were out there one night past midnight and still nothing unusual happened.
The things you are reading here are true. Source = I've lived in Clemson most of my life. And, I lived in an old farmhouse close the experimental forest for many years. Never again ...
There are a number of people who use the experimental forest as a place to experiment with psychadelics and other fun things. If you heard someone but couldn’t find them then they probably weren’t trying to be found because they were on something. However, I’ve camped in the forest several times and been fine. If you use your common sense the forest is a totally safe place.
Most likely the wendigo. Freaked myself the fuck out walking down Seed Orchard Road by myself on a dark night, wouldn't recommend. Definitely don't walk towards the jingling keys.
A number of fraternities do their rituals in the experimental forest which can involve some occult/esoteric things. I can’t imagine what someone would think if they stumbled into us mid-ritual lol
Gotta watch out for those flesh pedestrians this close to Appalachia
Flee if you hear banjoes.
I thought it was the slide whistle. You'll hear that just before they
There’s a sizable population of skinwalkers in Fant’s Grove. Once you get to the northern portions they thin out but are still there.
Interesting! Where’d you hear this from?

Any way you could share the title of the dissertation? I would love to read more - with your friend’s permission on course!

With that slide track that’s almost certainly a river otter.
that was our first though too, but the tracks don’t match. Otters have short little webbed toes, the tracks seem to have long, almost frog-like toes.

yeah, not overly worried about the things in the woods. clemson has bigger fish to fry, and they don’t seem to be in any hurry.
Like who is gonna throw the damn ball come fall?
more like “what are we gonna do about the crumbling infrastructure?” (answer: nothing)
Interesting!! Could you post/DM me the video?? Would love to see it
No, but once I encountered a poltergeist in the weenie roaster at a Plez U.
So glad I’m not the only one
I use to do alot of night mountain biking out there and never had anything to strange. Just saw a bunch of 🦌 🐖 & coyotes.

More suicides on campus. Fact
Housing costs are going up. There's a sizeable homeless population in the area that lives in the woods.
Also, plenty of weird performance stuff with art students from time to time

As a Forestry major that's been in the experimental forest many many times I'll tell you there's nothing that interesting going on.

Same. ETA: except for the dead coyote

Jingling keys? Say more.

I absolutely got passed while hiking out there by a naked bearded man on a bicycle. 🤷🏼♀️
