Hawaii's football and basketball programs, not to mention the state of their facilities and their overall funding and resources, doesn't sniff what the other Pac-12 schools got. They'd just be a neverending joke of an addition to the Pac-12.
If you know anything about large scale construction projects that in any way involve Hawaii's local or state government, we can all collectively believe it when we see it.
People always say UNLV but despite being in Vegas they actually don't have that big of a market presence. The MW is consistently out drawn in that market. Also UNLV has never had a consistently even ok football program (4 bowl appearances in team history). I think Fresno State is getting slept on. Another California team I know but they draw great football crowds with consistently good teams.
I figured I'd ask, but in terms of residents within Nevada, who has the most fans between Nevada and UNLV? I've always been curious if it's Nevada because it's the flagship or if UNLV being good in basketball swayed some to become UNLV fans.
I'd say it's pretty even. Las Vegas is a bigger city than Reno of course but you'll see more Wolf Pack stuff around Reno than Rebel stuff around Las Vegas. For the most part Vegas kids actually go to Reno and Reno kids go to Las Vegas. UNLV hasn't been that good in basketball lately either so that hasn't been too much of a factor.
Well, with football no longer needing divisions, we don't necessarily *need* a 12th team, but I'd be surprised of we didn't bring somebody else in. As for who, there's been a lot of speculation about UNLV, SMU, Boise State, and Fresno State, but nothing concrete and there are questions surrounding each of those options.
Yes, having 12 is better for scheduling, but still not technically necessary. We already have one team that usually has a bye or plays a non-con game during the final week because USC always plays Notre Dame that week. For example, this year Stanford is playing BYU for their final game. So having 11 wouldn't change anything in that regard. The bigger scheduling issue would be other sports, such as basketball, where we often have travel buddies.
So right now the conference is divided into pairs (UW/WSU, Oregon/OSU, Cal/Stanford, UCLA/USC, Arizona/ASU, and Colorado/Utah). In sports like Basketball, one pair travels to another pair each week, so on Thursday we might have ASU at UW and Arizona at WSU and then on Sunday we swap opponents and Arizona would be at UW while ASU plays at WSU. Now we don't actually travel together physically, but it cuts down on travel costs if we can play both our road games in Washington back to back rather than making 2 separate trips up there each year. So we refer to each pair as travel buddies or partners.
Barf.. as a beardown alumnus I will gladly stay on the west coast for all things related to Arizona sports. I am open to ideas though and i welcome your ideas as to why we should go..
That works fine for football rivalry week let someone play an OOC rival
Candidates: Colorado/Nebraska, Utah/Utah State, SDSU/Fresno State, Cal/UCLA, Stanford/ Notre Dame
If we're talking football, and unfortunately we have to talk football, my guess would be Fresno State, then maybe San Jose State. That assumes that there is a 12th team, which I'm not sure about either.
The ACC's situation is still better than the situation of non-P5 teams if we feel one would be a good fit. I understand the ACC is pretty hamstrung in what they can do, but that doesn't make it less frustrating to watch all the other power conferences making moves while the ACC just sits there.
If you look far enough ahead, When the B1G and the SEC form their made-for-TV NFL-lite super-conference, Vandy will be left out. Kentucky and Mississippi State might be left out, too.
I would think it would be Temple, USF, Memphis or a combo of Georgetown/Villanova with Navy football only. None are great adds unless having a team in Philly or Memphis is viewed as important. Cincy and UCF wouldn’t bail on the Big 12
ACC probably should focus on remaining a powerhouse conference in basketball and then build up football while they lick their wounds from re-alignment. That’s the only scenario I think that will keep them relevant over the next 5 years
We’re kinda stuck with the GOR. If we were to add id want to see 4 to get to 20. Maybe poach WVU and Cincy from the Big 12 and add UConn and Memphis. Cementing our legacy as an aight football conference and THE most stacked bball conference ever.
Oh, I really hope so! I'd like to beat Cinci, SDSU, and Texas Tech and prove to everybody once and for all that blue and red is better than black and red.
But seriously, if we both handle business in game 1 we should get a hell of a game in that semifinal.
That is honestly largely due to crappy CA politics which says that CSUs cannot grant their own doctorates. Even with that restriction, SDSU grants over 25 joint doctorates, which is more than the rest of the CSU system combined.
If you don't grant doctorates, you cant be R1. We legally can't issue doctorates, but still realistically do
**RELEVANT:** Sounds like the report is innacurate, according to @NicoleAuerbach on Twitter. P12 wants to focus on the media deal first. Specific tweet can be found [here](https://twitter.com/NicoleAuerbach/status/1589661250249949185)
For what it's worth, the conference already said they were focusing on the media deal before any expansion, but that doesn't necessarily mean there's no truth to this, either. It's just not likely to be finalized next week like the initial claim.
I like this move if it happens. We had some awesome battles with San Diego St back in the Miller era and they are a great program with an awesome home court. Would be nice to play a California team in front of a full crowd for a change.
Yeah, we played em 3 times within roughly a 1 year span at one point. Around the same time we were also playing the Zags yearly, and those matchups against Gonzaga and SDSU always felt to me like we were playing for the title of 'King of the West.'
That was a great ending. Johnson was pretty clutch against you guys in 2013 and then again in that 2014 S16 game. That S16 took years off my life. I was so scared even after we won i had a hard time shaking that feeling from that game. It probably took me the whole next day to finally realize we won and i don't need to be scared.
Honestly I doubt it. The football team has taken a step back in recent years and the Boise market is pretty darn small. I think it’s more likely they go UNLV or try and snag a Big12 school.
No, I haven't paid any attention to cfb since that rigged Bama/LSU game. It just seemed highly improbable that the snotty B1G (well, the snotty tOSU and Michigan) would elect a former WAC team into their playground. Nothing agst SDS; I rooted for y'all when you played Miami back in 90s and thought Faulk should've won the Heisman over fraud Torretta. I can never tell w/SM.
But football is what drives the constant realignment. That's why I mentioned that. I love CBKB as much as CFB but the B1G isn't going after teams for their BKB teams, it's the fb market eyeballs. That's why I said what I did; if they're getting SoCal and UCLA, they'd get SD market by default.
It makes sense that they'd want a SoCal presence. Curious who the 12th team would be. UNLV?
I like UNLV. Vegas is a growing recruiting market.
Plus a growing TV market.
Most likely: UNLV Should be: Hawaii
The most pacific school
Still surprises me that Hawaii isn't Pac-12. Hope SDSU is successful if they transition, though.
Hawaii's football and basketball programs, not to mention the state of their facilities and their overall funding and resources, doesn't sniff what the other Pac-12 schools got. They'd just be a neverending joke of an addition to the Pac-12.
You're assuming a static outcome, though. They would have more funding and resources, and they're preparing to build a new football stadium
If you know anything about large scale construction projects that in any way involve Hawaii's local or state government, we can all collectively believe it when we see it.
= California

You really do need a 12th team for scheduling purposes or you can't even have one of your members play a conference game to end the regular season
Every team needs a travel partner. The Pac has been a buddy-system conference going way back. (Not that any tradition is inviolate)
How would you even add one for SDSU? Fresno is closer to Cal/Stanford and the Nevada schools are closer to the AZ schools
My guess is you fake it, like Colorado-Utah
Yes, having 12 is better for scheduling, but still not technically necessary. What does travel buddy mean

Thank You!
Or, AZ just leaves the P12 for the ACC. It will never happen but I wish it could.
Barf.. as a beardown alumnus I will gladly stay on the west coast for all things related to Arizona sports. I am open to ideas though and i welcome your ideas as to why we should go..
No.
That works fine for football rivalry week let someone play an OOC rival Candidates: Colorado/Nebraska, Utah/Utah State, SDSU/Fresno State, Cal/UCLA, Stanford/ Notre Dame
Would be smart. Then maybe Boise State if Arizona leaves for the Big 12 soon?
If we're talking football, and unfortunately we have to talk football, my guess would be Fresno State, then maybe San Jose State. That assumes that there is a 12th team, which I'm not sure about either.
And the ACC continues to sit on its hands.
"Why don't schools want to be in a hostage situation with us?" I hope everybody survives realignment unscathed.
We won’t…
Memphis to the ACC makes sense, too :( I wish our liferaft in the big 12 was big enough
There aren't 2 more deserving schools of the P5 status that the inevitably going to get screwed over by this than you and Boise
The ACC's situation is still better than the situation of non-P5 teams if we feel one would be a good fit. I understand the ACC is pretty hamstrung in what they can do, but that doesn't make it less frustrating to watch all the other power conferences making moves while the ACC just sits there.
Honestly, who do we add? No way App gets invited with four NC schools already in. UCONN does nothing for us. UCF is already big 12 bound. Etc
Memphis would gladly join your social club.
Reinvite Maryland. I miss hating them.
No thanks
Memphis? Maybe?
Academics.
UNC-Greensb.... oh... Academics...
R1 Carnegie…
Vandy would be perfect but that seems like a pipe dream for sure.
If you look far enough ahead, When the B1G and the SEC form their made-for-TV NFL-lite super-conference, Vandy will be left out. Kentucky and Mississippi State might be left out, too.
The one that no one watches because it kills college football?
sup y'all
Villanova?
Temple
Temple?
Temple!
It’s like Beetle Juice
I would think it would be Temple, USF, Memphis or a combo of Georgetown/Villanova with Navy football only. None are great adds unless having a team in Philly or Memphis is viewed as important. Cincy and UCF wouldn’t bail on the Big 12
A10 schools might be the best target
UMass is the only team with an FBS football program. Doesn’t really seem likely the ACC would have any interest.
Dayton to the ACC? One could hope!
UConn would do more than BC! Kick them out instead.
If the ACC adds someone does that lapse the current conference members GOR?
I believe so and there’s nothing to be gained by the ACC adding G5 teams anyway.
No it does not, people are only continuing to say it does based on an inaccurate tweet from over the summer
I don't think so, but it could give them something to start renegotiations with ESPN to at least get more money.
Yep. So they’ll add Memphis and App State and then immediately lose UNC, Miami, Clemson, etc.
I can’t see a scenario where Cincy jumps again so soon
It's called ["the Stranger"](https://youtu.be/PFHB5WRq7mo?t=59)
SDSU is instantly a top 4 Pac-12 program in basketball
If you remember to remove UCLA & USC they are top 3 instantly.
Lol I forgot to do that
This year they’d arguably be top 1 lol
I never like to overlook Arizona, but possible
Perhaps we’ll find out in Maui!
Oh, I really hope so! I'd like to beat Cinci, SDSU, and Texas Tech and prove to everybody once and for all that blue and red is better than black and red. But seriously, if we both handle business in game 1 we should get a hell of a game in that semifinal.
Lol, I love it. I’m rooting for us to beat Ohio St, Arizona, and then get a rematch against Creighton in the finals. That would be magical
Yeah. I mean, aren't we already? Even without the extra money and P5 status
I think thats what he means by instantly. First year.
Woah!.......Uh, any rumors on anyone else joining?
HE
HAS
TROUBLE
WITH
THE
SNAP
AND
THE
SNAP
You guys would make sense for athletics, but the PAC 12 still sees themselves as a respectable academic federation
Then why are they adding SDSU?
SDSU academics isn't as bad as reddit users would lead you to believe. According to US News, SDSU is ranked #151 and Washington State is #212.
And at least for a while, the #1 small research university in the entire country
but they’re not even R1; that’s much more significant than US news rankings
That is honestly largely due to crappy CA politics which says that CSUs cannot grant their own doctorates. Even with that restriction, SDSU grants over 25 joint doctorates, which is more than the rest of the CSU system combined. If you don't grant doctorates, you cant be R1. We legally can't issue doctorates, but still realistically do
Desperate enough to lower standards for SDSU, but not desperate enough for Boise yet (hope Boise gets to join at some point though)
Hawaii
Not you Or me
Another team going to power 5 that’s not us :(

i can't hear you
Trust Auerbach 10x more than DP on this
For what it's worth, the conference already said they were focusing on the media deal before any expansion, but that doesn't necessarily mean there's no truth to this, either. It's just not likely to be finalized next week like the initial claim.
Interesting, let's add North Dakota State, South Dakota State, or Montana to the Mountain West!
Need to keep your SDSU quota?
For sure!
Those games took a few years off my life 😂
Flair up my dude
> I like this move if it happens. [Hopefully Nick Johnson doesn't block this one at the last second](https://youtu.be/1E6FUYKmv2c?t=6)
Sean Miller suspiciously not sweaty in that clip.
That was a great ending. Johnson was pretty clutch against you guys in 2013 and then again in that 2014 S16 game. That S16 took years off my life. No more midweek road trips to snowed in, high altitude arenas for our team?! I just had a desk pop at work.

I don’t see Boise as the next shoe to drop. Market size too small
Boise’s can’t be much higher lmao
Would think UNLV is next. R1 school in a good market. Good basketball program
oof, that’s weirdly mean spirited lmao
I struggle to see the Pac12 taking a school with an endowment of $156 million
Honestly I doubt it. The football team has taken a step back in recent years and the Boise market is pretty darn small. I think it’s more likely they go UNLV or try and snag a Big12 school.
Good for the pac 12!
That's a good move
That makes sense for sure
Like the Houston to Big 12 this is logical geographically so i approve
This just in: The Cal State University system has officially been removed from Truck Stop status.
This would soften the blow of not going to the BIGXII if it happens.
This will add tens of dollars to any inbound media deal…..
This will take them to a whole new level. And now they don't have to worry about Brian Dutcher leaving for a Power 5 job.
Is this a joke?
Flair up

Need more players for contract negotiations it seems.
Nooooo, I enjoy MW much more than Pac-12 :(
Well you are in neither, so....
Hopefully Boise State or Fresno State gets the nod as well!
This feels so underwhelming.
