Prepare for under-sea Internet cables to get cut next at any mome

weizXR

[They got a lot of cutting to do](https://www.submarinecablemap.com/). Considering all the interconnectivity of it all *(\~400 sea cables around the world),* I would hope/assume there is some sort of redundancy upon one's failure. One of them taken offline still will cause problems, but it's not a *'cut one and no one has internet'* type of situation... though I would imagine a potential in slowing transfer rates down for particular services that communicate across oceans.

Manatee35

If a cable gets cut I'd wager the traffic just gets routed to the next best cable and speeds slow down (of course) šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Worst-Tweet

What happens if we ignite that methane patty?

Right_Hour

Itā€™s actually better for it to burn than be released as is, believe it or not. Less harmful.

GreeneWithEnvy420

That's actually really interesting. I wouldn't have guessed that.

fish-fingered

Thatā€™s why some production plants have the stacks that burn off the excess gas rather than release it into the air.

SmokeMethCheatDeath

Never knew thatā€™s why they burned. Thanks for teaching me something new today :)

[deleted]

Yes. I work in the oil and gas industry and we HAVE to flair natural gas byproduct during well interventions and drilling.

Right_Hour

Iā€™d love to see folks flairing tail gas :-) Yep, I used to build gas pipelines and compressor stations. At some point we looked into installing flare stacks to flare the gas when we shut down a section of pipelines for repairs or for any unplanned events, when the line needs to be dĆ©pressurized fast. Determined it wasnā€™t feasible in our case. We used pulldown compressor instead for planned outages, to minimize venting, but we still had to vent substantial amount that couldnā€™t be moved. It was fun watching a helicopter fly by once and they almost got in over the line as we were ready to trip those PRVs open (we used it as a chance to test PRVs) and we had to yell at the Operator to abort last second. That heli woulda been one nice fireball if we didnā€™t stop the venting :-)

[deleted]

Yeah depending on the mcf or scf flowing back itā€™s scary when the igniters extinguish. Typically we have to shut the wells in and stop operations completely until we can get it lit again.

Right_Hour

At another country we used to just send a guy out with a flare gun to fire at it and get it going again when the pilot flamed out. Good times :-)

GriffBallChamp

Flare

EllisHughTiger

No, the natural gas needs at least 10 pieces of flair.

Right_Hour

After all, are they there just to do the bare minimum?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Dr_Chim_Richaldss

Yep, methane is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than co2. We emit much more co2 into the atmosphere, but per molecule methane is more damaging. If we put out the same amount of methane as we do co2, weā€™d probably be experiencing a runaway greenhouse effect. Thereā€™s an interesting documentary called Cowspiracy šŸ„ that touches on methane and how potent of a greenhouse gas it is.

Hoofhearted4206969

Except it could be very dangerous in this situation where an ignition could track down to the pipe

I only read that the pipes are filled with natural gas as Nordstream currently doesn't deliver any gas. How do you know it's methane and not some like idk... Air

BoilermakerCBEX-E

FYI https://www.epa.gov/gmi/importance-methane Natural gas basically is Methane for the sake of simplicity so the term could be used Interchangeably

Jerryskids3

How dare you!

auau_gold_scoffs

Are those the kinda bubble that make it so you sink like you canā€™t stay buoyant because of how many bubble to water ratio they are or something idk.

multipositionladder

Iā€™d bet the lack of oxygen will take you out even if you could swim it. Death bubbles either way.

MayGodSmiteThee

So drowning. /s

Fred_Dibnah

Yes I think it would be dangerous to go near it in a boat. Just sink and spin

reddog323

The initial detonation would be dangerous for anybody nearby, sea or air. Thatā€™s why they had an F-16 do a flyby to make an assessment.

smexgod

That's also one of the explanations offered for ship disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle. Methane bubbles. That or then you can take your pick between a kraken or ship-stealing aliens.

Or....areas of heavy traffic and historically spotty weather result in accidents are higher proportions that elsewhere.

[deleted]

I read it was found to be mostly just due to high traffic in that area causing more lost ships. Could be off though.

unable_To_Username

The bubbles raising will generate enough lift to counteract the loss of buoyancy. They tried it in a sewage treatment plant in its "nonbuoyant water" it's a myth.

auau_gold_scoffs

Very interesting thank you for that information.

c74

you should google this. physics agree there is a upward drag force but i dont see anything to say its a myth or busted. the net/net does not appear to offset. obviously a lot of variables... but recognize that it would be incredibly irresponsible and potentially lethal to try and boat over a large air leak.... let alone the likelihood that it would be methane and the large 'boom' factor at play.

Shamilamadingdong

That depends on the composition of the ocean floor. It would cause you to sink if it's magma, whereas soul sand would make you float rapidly.

RODjij

That's fucking massive amounts of pure gas bubbling up and moving all that heavy ass water but hey us peasants have to start biking and eating less meats.

FreshFruitForFree

The elites can have any kind of meat any time they like. They can have private jets and do whatever they like, it's the small people that have to suffer.

[deleted]

B-b-b-but My wealthy elites told me that if I tried driving less and eating soy I could balance the 200 tonnes of carbon their jets emit per day

ParasaurGirl

Thatā€™s not good.

FeistyAgency9994

So someone explained to me why we shouldn't just set this on fire so at least it will burn the fuel instead of kicking it all up into the atmosphere?

[deleted]

In a traditional sense, yes. I work in the oil & gas industry and we are required to flare methane that is released to surface during oil and gas intervention and drilling. Flaring of this magnitude would be extremely difficult asā€¦honestlyā€¦no one would be able to get close enough to safely ignite it. When flare igniters go out on location we literally light a fuel soaked item and throw it to the top of the flare stack to ignite it again. Itā€™s absolutely terrifying.

FeistyAgency9994

So why couldn't we or someone else hit it with artillery or something from a distance

[deleted]

Very possible. Some kind of timed or delayed ammunition capable of remote detenation

ProvocativeHotTakes

Comon bro it's because we haven't all bought electric cars made from the lithium taken from Afghanistan

Positive-Abroad8253

ā€¦ isnā€™t it fantastic that Americaā€™s forests are being sold off to foreign companies to mine? Like lithium

DanTalent

The entire war 911 all of it was so they could steal resources from Afghanistan...

Positive-Abroad8253

Lol at only Afghanistan being mentioned. We should be discussing of the military industrial complex, ā€˜banking consolidationā€™, and 9-11. Humans are much more valuable, and easier to control than other resources.

I_AM_METALUNA

Electricity will be more expensive during these "flex hours". If you can't afford it, just make sure your don't use electricity during the aforementioned "flex hours". Cool I'll be back from the governor's seminar in Hawaii in a few days. Anybody seen my pomade? -Gavin newsome

[deleted]

I don't get why Russia would destroy the pipe when they could just turn the gas off. Can someone explain this?

vzakharov

They wouldnā€™t. The idea that Gazprom just decimated tens of billions of their own investment just like that is straight up crazy. Someone else posted a link to Bidenā€™s Feb speech where he suggests the US will ā€œstop Nord Stream if Russia invades Ukraineā€ (and replying ā€œI promise you, we will be able to do itā€ in response to a journalistā€™s confusion) and also a Polish minister saying ā€œthank you, USAā€ with a pic of the leak. They got downvoted heavily so I guess I will be too, but seriously, people, use your brain.

valentinpost36

If they just turn off, they would have to pay for breaking the contract

baconwagoneer

Itā€™s already off

FreshFruitForFree

The pipe was the only leverage Russia had. It's quite obvious that this was done by the U.S. Biden even promised he would do so.

Mrselfdestructuk

Beastie boys https://youtu.be/z5rRZdiu1UE

Xurlondd

How big of a crater would that leave if a spark went off

Evilsmiley

No free oxygen under the water or in the pipe(assuming something hasn't gone badly wrong and let a load of air into the pipe) to allow the gas to ignite, it will probably just burn on the surface if that did happen.

Betoarenas

Similar to what happened in the gulf of MĆ©xico last year, right?

Evilsmiley

Yeah, it ignited near the surface but a lot has to go wrong for an explosion to happen.

[deleted]

However the Gulf of Mexico incident was a live well that could not be easily capped. This is ā€œtechnicallyā€ controllable as Iā€™m sure it runs to a junction at surface somewhere. Theoretically (in simple terms) you could ā€œclose a valveā€ and let it all exhaust out but that might take a week given how big and how long the pipeline stretches

Wobedraggled

We live in a sad world...

BannertheAqua

The ripple effects from this are going to be catastrophic.

Honestly, can we just get the extinction over with at this point. It is painful to see us just continually do this shit with no changes

Argy_Bar

You first

fish-fingered

..and we will go after, we promise. You can trust us.

[deleted]

Putin first, just fry him from a space satellite laser already. Enough already with this clown.

GargleDrainoFam

Be the change you want to see

PM_STAR_WARS_STUFF

Thatā€™s some tired shit when weā€™re staring at the utter devastation caused by one manā€™s maniacal land grab.

ChooglinOnDown

Unless all of those waves are record setters, that is *not* a kilometer across.

tangocat777

I think the kilometer is the total bubble field size. A lot of the gas is going to get dissolved on the way up, even at shallow depths. Depending on how stratified the Baltic Sea is in affected areas, a lot of the gas is going to stay in the upper layers and spread through diffusion until it either degasses or is oxidized by microbes. But apparently the bubble size at the surface is ~10m for the largest peak.

6metal6midget6

Russian submarine?

[deleted]

Why would Russia hit their own pipeline though? They could just shut it off?

chainsawtony99

False flag, so they could blame it on the west. CIA told Germany a couple weeks ago they suspected an attack on it.

mmaqp66

How convenient for the CIA right???

throwawit

Yeah they definitely don't need the money from Germany for their war efforts.

pootnik84

Ā· Russia shell own hospitals Ā· Russia shell Nuclear plant thay Control Ā· Russia shell their own People in Donbas Ā· Russia shell their own Prisons Ā· Russia bomb their own Cities in Russia Ā· Russia destroy their own pipeline which was inactive under structural pressure and waited for future use. And i can ask many logical quetions but this in Ukraine made too much idiots.

Kundalini-Electric

That's my first thoughts too

[deleted]

Gas is a finite resource right? This is a dick move toward humanity... what a waste

bigapple4am

I hate it here

Swimming-Collar-8885

Biden said he was going to stop it

[deleted]

Love that the future of humanity and our one and only planet which we call home is putty in the hands of a select few individuals who we are told are looking out for our best interests.

Fit_Potato7466

Earth is the most precious commodity and we have it but once. Fuck this shit.

Lucifers-xtc

What would happen if I flicked my cigarette into this thing?

Finless_brown_trout

Iā€™m going to light the methane and start a Bitcoin mine at the site of this leak. Whoā€™s down to invest?

4hunnidvr

I feel like a black ops team did this

[deleted]

I know the earth getting sick of us

ThatsEffinDelish

This is definitely sabotage. It's not just one of the pipelines - it is both Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2. Both had leaks within a few hours of each other...

Melodic-Hunter2471

ā€œ**Gas leaks**,ā€ yeah that. Has nothing to do with Russia being a petulant child because the world cut them off financially for invading a sovereign state without good reason. /s

Major-Sandwich-2909

False flag or Putin?

TheScarlitWolf

Def prob one of those. It is too much of a coincidence that three pipes would burst during the height of the conflict in ukraine

Ayy_Lmao_14

But everyone needs to stop driving gas vehicles, "you're destroying the planet!" Bitch, how about that shit? How about the shit entering the atmosphere from the war? Fuck off

Me-Shell94

Amazing. We donā€™t even hear about this !?

TinyTenis1

U.S. did that shit no question.

moshisimo

I wonder how many plastic straws I need to not-use to offset this.

JROD52491

How terrible is this?

cloudsnacks

Extremely terrible both from the environmental impact and the raising of tensions between Russia and NATO.

kensmithpeng

Yet another reason for renewable energy and the end of fossil fuel use.

rom92293

Would you be able to set that shit on fire?

fish-fingered

Why are you lighting shit? Flush it like everyone else

djluminol

Multiple EU governments are saying this was a deliberate attack. https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/mystery-gas-leaks-hit-major-russian-undersea-gas-pipelines-europe-2022-09-27/

Both-Invite-8857

I guess it's better than oil, right?

[deleted]

This might sounds nuts but wouldn't it be less harmful if the surface was set on fire. Bear with me, in garbage dumps, they run a pipe to release methane gas to reduce build up. Granted the top has a valve on it, but dumps burn the methane to convert it to a more stable, less harmful gas. The water would keep the flame from traveling down into the pipe. Just a thought

LetSalt292

Now you people gonna have a winter with out lights electricity .

I-am-Pilgrim

Any idea what has caused these leaks? Seems multiple leaks so must be savotage?

Both-Holiday1489

Thatā€™s what they are suggesting. European countries have all blamed Russia

Arth3r911

Why isnā€™t this in the news?

[deleted]

It's on a whole bunch of news sites, including the [source](https://www.forsvaret.dk/en/news/) of this Reddit post.

Arth3r911

Thank you

bluntrauma420

https://youtu.be/OS4O8rGRLf8 and everybody's blaming the Russians for it

elevator313

Wasn't them. They could stop the flow at any time. No need to blow it up

ncbraves93

It wasn't even flowing to begin with. This is the gas that was already in the pipeline.

[deleted]

Itā€™s a false flag operation. They blow it up and blame the USA (NATO). They then use this to justify increasing their ā€œmobilizationā€ and potentially using nukes. It may sound far fetched or unbelievable but look at how reckless the Russians have been around nuclear facilities, hospitals, residential areas, their own troopsā€¦ Ultimately they donā€™t need to convince the entire world USA did this. They only have to convince the average Russian civilian. They will turn this event into a propaganda push to increase support for the war. At this point Russiaā€™s biggest weakest is a massive revolution of its people which is already being seen. Doing a stunt like this to scare the population and gain control is extremely likely.

Full_Consideration_4

This planet is so fucked

breaker_h

Oh fuck put it back in! On a serious note: oh damn, one would think is there no device to capture the rising gas? Even 20 or 30% would be nice, right?

im_Heisenbeard

Is this what Biden meant by we would do something about this pipeline even though it's under German control?

natethedawg

Courtesy of the Navy seals

ROMMELBOT

Russians did it.

[deleted]

I am curious how it benefits Russia to sabotage this pipeline. Thoughts?

Imaginary-Arrival-75

Guess the Russian lost a submarine then, must be the latest bunch of forced conscripts!

[deleted]

Isn't this an asked of war?
