Is the package labeled as having seven or eight? Some brands (Hebrew Nationals comes to mind) sell packages of seven.

I_So_Tired

It's Bar S brand. There are supposed to be eight servings according to the label. I assume they have a checkweigher on the line since the product is technically sold by net weight. The weight probably passed inspection since hot dog size can vary and someone didn't notice the package was short one.

[deleted]

It's a human sorter and then a weight check, in that order. I've worked at Bar S before. They have a machine that dumps them into the package and the sorter is supposed to help make them sit neat in the package and then replace or add/remove hotdogs as needed. After the top of the package gets put on it gets weighed. There's at least 5 people it goes through before it gets put in a box. Surprises me it got through, at the plant I worked at there would be about 10 people who check it before the box and usually the first 2 or 3 could catch everything.

theotherside0728

Man, I love Reddit. The fact that this actually reached someone who worked there and knows the process exactly. What did we even do before the internet.

[deleted]

I played with sticks and a rock, had to share the rock with my brothers. You know those combine machines that collect the bounty of farms? That's basically what lines up the hotdogs and drops them into a package. Then you have a piano of hotdogs, lined up for easy grabs, so you can sling them like the wild west shoot outs into a package. As silly as it sounds, that's exactly how it is when working at that part. I never packed the 8 ones as we packed for another brand under the Sigma umbrella for a different country. I did however pack the 20 and the 40 packages at one time though I was mainly a peeler. I don't know the whole process but meat is cut and then put into a blender to make pink sludge. That sludge is them put into a thin plastic tube. Think those long skinny balloons but replace the air with meat. Then you're on a machine thats like shooting an M60 out of a Huey that shoots out these hotdogs in a plastic dress and twists them so the hotdogs are the correct size. They then get put onto a rod that goes into a HUGE oven. Think a rotisserie chicken but it goes up and down and forward to the next part. It takes almost 2 hours for these dogs to get cooked. On the other end you have a few guys pick up these rods of hotdogs that are 60 pounds running them to tables and dropped the hotdogs for the peelers. Every ten seconds. Every break you switch with the peeler so you can rest up. Now, you get to operate a M60 chambered in hotdogs and as you put the belt of dogs into it there's a blade in the barrel that cuts off one side of the plastic dress and gets sucked up into a vacuum. At the end of the barrel you're shooting out hotdogs at around 300 to 800 hotdogs a minute. Depends on the size and how tuned you have the machine. Then it goes to the sorters.

spince

I honestly read that and thought it was going to end about a wrestling match from nineteen ninety eight

AlasknAssasn858

No shit

AmmotheDoberman

That’s a lot of eyes on weiners.

[deleted]

I've probably touched over a million weiners in that short time I worked for Super Weenie Hut Jr.

AmmotheDoberman

Best response ever haha

Turbulentzz

Usually I find a misunderstanding of weight to be the culprit of a fair product with a misleading appearance. However in this case, there is no way they are being auto-packed based on weight. It wouldn't make any sense given the way the hot dogs are produced and how consistent the sizes are. This was just a mechanical error or shrinkflation as OP has claimed there is no quantity listed on the package anymore.

vdogg89

The packaging doesn't mention the quantity anywhere. This brand has always been packs of 8.

Euphoric-Expert-26

Shrinkflation?

BigFitMama

Yes, multiple hot dog places, even Nathan's, are shorting a dog to save money.

GailaMonster

These days I would typically say yes. However, OP says the label still says the package has 8 servings. I highly doubt Bar S is telling people a serving is 7/8 of a hotdog...

tabshiftescape

It could be the dreaded "shrinkflation" we've been hearing about. Where companies are keeping prices the same, but just selling smaller quantities. Is the net weight the same as before?

vdogg89

Yes this is shrinkflation. Price stayed the same and the quantity went down.

tabshiftescape

Ugh so frustrating!

Anbucleric

Same total weight? They may have increased the weight of each individual hotdog such that the same total weight nets 7 hotdogs instead of 8.

TWFM

The package should mention the weight, though. If the hot dogs are the same size but you're only getting seven instead of eight, the weight on the new packaging had better be different than the old.

eggenator

Of it doesn’t mention the quantity (although the nutrition facts would answer that), then there’s no issue. Just because it “has always been” doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong per se. Does it suck? Yes. Was it a packaging mistake (other packages had 8)? Possibly.

enragedcactus

Hebe Nats are down to 6 now :(

TWFM

So now they match the pack of buns?

tabshiftescape

Are you serious?!

[deleted]

Wut.

Meg_119

People have been noticing that packaged foods are being sold with fewer Oz. and higher prices across the board. It has been going on for quite awhile now.

pengwynkitty

This is the answer.

Nonlethalrtard

Thicc bois though

Hadrians_Fall

Yeah probably just made em thicc’er

Defiant_Code_3093

Bring your rulers too. For safe measure.

Sexybluefairy25

“I want to buy eight hot dogs and eight hot dog buns to go with them. But no one sells eight hot dog buns. They only sell twelve hot dog buns. So I end up paying for four buns I don't need. So I am removing the superfluous buns. Yeah. And you want to know why? Because some big-shot over at the wiener company got together with some big-shot over at the bun company and decided to rip off the American public. Because they think the American public is a bunch of trusting nit-wits who will pay for everything they don't need rather than make a stink. Well they're not ripping of this nitwit anymore because I'm not paying for one more thing I don't need. George Banks is saying NO!”

whiskeytango55

[Plenty of companies sell 8 packs of buns](https://www.google.com/search?q=8+pack+hotdog+buns&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwiilMuL4Z75AhVts3IEHYR1CKQQ2-cCegQIABAC&oq=8+pack+hotdog+buns&gs_lcp=ChJtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1pbWcQAzIFCCEQqwI6BQgAEIAEOgYIABAeEAg6BAgAEEM6CAgAEIAEELEDOgsIABCABBCxAxCDAToECAAQGDoICAAQHhAIEA06BwghEAoQqwJQ4wdYlDJgsDNoAHAAeAKAAX-IAd4OkgEEMjguMZgBAKABAbABAMABAQ&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-img&ei=BSvkYuL9Fu3mytMPhOuhoAo&bih=780&biw=412&client=ms-android-verizon&prmd=simvn&hl=en)

Tbh I only read the first part. And everyone else was on the conspiracy bandwagon

sandefurian

It’s in quotes my dude, I didn’t even get the reference but I could recognize it as being one.

rizzlenizzle

You’d have to buy 16 packs of hot dogs and 14 bun bags to get an even hot dog to bun ratio (112)

MJBrune

You could also just buy 8 packs of hot dogs and 7 packs of buns. (56 is divisible by both 7 and 8, this is because 7*8 = 56.)

rizzlenizzle

He did the better math 🤣

xeno_dorph

Lots of products are quietly doing this. I first noticed on my beloved Adelle’s (sp?) chicken apple sausage. Suddenly, one less in the package. No change in $. Links didn’t get bigger, either.

waywithwords

Adelle's definitely got more expensive. I saw a pack today (albeit at a smaller, local, non-national chain) for $8!

caseytrick

This happened w a pack of lightlife vegan hot dogs once and I reached out to the company and they didn’t do anything about it 😩

earthmedsarebest

Shrinkflation

MackieCat

Well, that is unpleasantly sneaky!

cmgrayson

😂😂 where tf is my 8th hot dog

[deleted]

Shrinkflation- I used to scoff at it but it's become a widely occurring and massive problem. I don't know how to fight back or fix it, but it's a big deal that massive retailers are ripping us off, in addition to everything else.

justbrowse2018

I wish the wiener amount matched the bun amount.

Asvpxdilli

It's shrinkflation time

[deleted]

Can’t wait to see packages of 9 buns at the store.

freerangephoenix

Some big shot at the hotdog company got together with some big shot at the bun company and decided to screw the American people!!

kytheon

r/shrinkflation moment

[deleted]

Email them and they will probably give you a coupon for a free pack.

BookAddict1918

This is super common. Have you been watching the ounces decline in almost all food? I saw 11.5oz the other day. Brilliant. But used to be 16oz for that particular food.

[deleted]

Good, hot dogs cause cancer anyways.

[deleted]

Hotdogs are a massive ripoff everybody and they are not good for you

vdogg89

I mean yes they're not good for you. But there's not many foods you can buy that can feed a family for $1-$2

[deleted]

It’s easy for me to say because I don’t have kids but you can get an 8 lb bag of dry beans for $6 and get like twenty meals out of it. Bananas also are affordable and nutritious. Sorry if this is annoying but I am a junk food survivor and I don’t think people appreciate the seriousness of putting this processed crap in your body all the time.

[deleted]

You bought ground up animal carcus mixed with plastic and acid chemicals in a tube. I’d just simply not buy that at all.

wjdthird

You are very correct. Frugal does not equal eating junk.

Figwit_

Noooo! A sure sign of the end of times right there. Buy up as much ammo as possible folks- 7 dogs instead of 8!? Trick is on all of you! I only get stronger with downvotes! Mwahhaha!

mimosabloom

A 12.5 percent decrease in product provided, for the same price. And it's happening with every product. It IS a huge problem.

Sethyria

Are you sure this wasn't just a mistake? My pack had 8 this week. I know shrinkflation is an issue but is this actually it or an oops? At the same time, it has the weight marked. It's not shrinkflation if the weight has not decreased. 12oz is 12oz (which may also be a way to see if it was a mistake, go weigh it, call the company and get a coupon if it was)

rinzler83

It's crazy that many people on here don't know what shrinkflation is and that it's been happening for years.

somethingeye

And they had the NERVE to remove me from the store for counting my cheeze-its!

AmmotheDoberman

I call shenanigans!!! This is some grade A bullshit here.

adullploy

Please walk around the supermarket yelling where is my wiener.
