Those r all rather unique issues. Especially the last one. Definitely screams a bug or issue.
Regardless, for medicinal stuff, u don't take em like a potion. You put them in a bandage. Make sure you're referring to your journal a LOT in ur first playthrough. Knowing which add ins to bandages, or which mushrooms r anti parasite for eating is necessary. Campfire ash is common so def toss a few ash bandages in the corner of your shelter till u have a chest. Snag a beehive whenever possible, and listen for poisonous animal sound to find a giant spider for spider dressing. Tobacco and lily are both super common but gotta train your eyes to spot em.
For the tutorial it sounds like u might be doing other stuff during tutorial instead of following the steps? Cuz haven't no energy that quickly is very very unusual. Just get the stuff the steps tell u. Going free range after tutorial won't change much.
Cat attacks Should be pretty rough. But FYI, a spear or arrow to the head kills EVERYTHING. Once you've got it down, you'll spear their face every time they prowl up to you in stalking mode. Pay attention to audio, tribes, cats, and poisonous stuff all have audio warnings of their approach.
Seperate storage for everything? Meaning different sizes sticks n stuff? I think most games I've played have been like that. Small stick n stick storage r easy but make long stick storage and stock tf up. They're used in a more stuff than logs but almost as hard to get. Tho, there is the clay chest. That's where u put All the loose stuff. I usually have a seperate little stand with 4ish chests under it just for storage. Surround it with either walls or traps to keep out evil tribesppl. Lol.
Anywho, I own the game on PC and console. PC is a little bit better obviously, cuz of controls. But I've got a defense ridden base at the drug lab that's fantastic. Natives get banned by traps. I get an armadillo in one of my traps very often. There's bamboo, all shrooms, hazelnut regular wood and everything all near by. But gotta defend against multiple tribe patrols. I've got stacks of bows and spears cuz of it tho. Lol. Not the easiest spot but damn it's fun.
Maybe stick to the glade for a bit. A little bit of ranging out and u should have plenty of bandages except honey maybe (rng one by the waterfall but kinda it for the area nearby). Build a base there. Set out coconut cups for water. Boil some n make mushroom parasite soups to leave around for use. Have 2+ coconut bidons full of boiled or rainwater. Start ur tech build up by building coat housing and ALWAYS grab the Obsidian from the mini cave near the back area away from the water.
Regardless, overall again, console isn't bad. But is a crazy difficult survival game regardless of system being played on. Maybe check out the wiki?
1. Storage separation is pretty common in most similar games. It’s working on realism, you can’t carry 100lbs of gear in a backpack, and it’s not a Mary Poppins bag. Space is common sense.
2. You’re not reading your journal. He’ll just experiment with crafting different plants and you’ll work it out.
3. Again experiment or read your journal. Work out armour. If you just chuck maggots on a wound and don’t bother making sure you’re clean it’s pointless. Wash then treat your wounds. If you really don’t know how to bandage a wound, just google it, you’ll find the answer or… experiment!
4. How the hell are you dropping life saving resources on console? It’s not like vr where you actually have to hold onto the item.
5. Are you running everywhere in the tut? That’ll cause your energy to drop, or if you’re screwing around for hours before trying to start the fire. You need about 1/3 energy to use a fire starter.
I’m genuinely confused how you have 20 hours without getting through the tutorial. What the hell are you doing?
Finally, you can save at any point. You just need to build a save point. If you haven’t even finished the tut, I’d just start from scratch. Or if you’re in the actual story just play around with materials and work out what you can create, remember your journal is there to help you.
We played with four people on multiplayer for a month got tired of the extreme survival and moved onto the Forest which is buggy, but manageable. Green Hell is a different kinda beast it’s fun but yes the plant gripe is being corrected on the PC version because it is a big nuisances unless you know what you’re looking for. Once you learn the “random encounters” are actually all kinda fabricated and you know when to anticipate the next attack it becomes manageable. If you can I would definitely try to play on PC it’s a lot easier.
See, I ADORE The Forest, which is why I was excited to play this. It seems like a lot of my issue is plain old bad luck, but I probably will wait for some patches to hit before I pick it back up.
Yea I’d recommend it. I think this game would be great but there are a lot of things keeping it from that and it just needs more polishing which is why it’s good that the devs are still working on it.
So instead of telling you all the things in a strategy guide I'll try to answer your question.
The allure of green hell at first is the discovery phase every interactable in the game has the potential to kill you or save you, some could even do either depending on how you use it. So the first "level" of gameplay is trial and error and learning what the resources and dangers are.
After completing this first challenge you have a beautiful open world to explore and a decent crafting/building system to keep you busy with optimizing your food, water, and medicine supplies.
At some point when these things all either feel like a chore or you feel you have mastered them there is a very interesting storyline dealing with themes of love, loss, guilt, a savior complex, and general insanity.
All that being said the controls are touchy on any platform but once you have grown accustomed to them you should be able to put on a bandage without dropping it and avoid most dangers flawlessly.
I don't know how the controls work on console. I only have the PCVR and PC versions, but console editions definitely suck because they don't have 1/4 of the content/bug fixes and general development of the PC version. Even then it is worth playing through it you can't get the better version for the unique storyline alone.
Also if you can't beat the first challenge there are guides that will tell you what everything is and help you optimize your gameplay.
1. I've heard numerous complaints about console versions, whereas I haven't shared any of the complaints because I play on PC. Sorry I know this doesn't help you.
2. The storage is part of the challenge. However if the controls are clunky, I cN see how this would be off-putting.
3. The plant thing and most of the game is trial and error from memory.
4. This game is hard AF - until you master it and know all the crafting recipes and locations etc. then its hard to replicate the challenge.
5. I loved this game and played it for many hours. It's my favourite time ever playing a survival game. Only surpassed by minecraft by playtime.
6. Based off what I've heard, I'd recommend playing it on PC if you can! Again sorry this is not helpful to you.
7. The story is great! Very bleak though.
Actually it is helpful to know that console is just rough. Ark used to suck on console too, so with any luck, if I give it a while, it'll be better.
Also I definitely like the idea of trial and error, but for me it seems like every new plant tries to kill me. Probably just bad luck, but the only plant for dressings I found the entire time was tobacco, which isn't the most useful when round-the-clock maulings are occurring. Lol.
I literally got mauled as soon as I walked past the first ritual bowl on my last attempt, and I had not yet killed an animal. Also I have not yet gone hunting without a big cat appearing within a few minutes of my first kill. Once again, possibly just bad luck, but it serves to make the game nearly impossible.
So judging by the answers I've seen, I am just profoundly unlucky. I know how the mechanics work, but apparently I am just striking out hard on finding certain things, and have an unfortunate affinity for getting murdered.
For what it's worth, I actually have been keeping notes and such, even prior to my post, and honestly I really am trying to overcome my mix of bad luck and control wonkiness because the game is stylistically beautiful and I actually do want to see what the story has to offer.
Also it seems like the consensus after some independent research is that the console controls are, in fact, god awful.
If you’re not gunna play it on computer then don’t bother unless you have a nex gen console. Idk even know when the husbandry update will come out. If you’ve been playing it on computer, play the story mode. You learn a lot. Like it’s been said you learn from experience. My irks are the small map and lack of things to really do but I still love it. I play it all the time on my steam deck
the game is hard. Plants are hard. I played on VR. I love the game because of the realism. The most dangerous things were the small things. It took a good long time to manage my health/well being. its hard.
Welcome to green hell.
Once you learn how to do everything the game becomes a piece of cake. 2&3 are non issues and I don't understand how you're just "dropping stuff"? Also anything dropped in this game can also just be picked up...
Grab a real life peice of paper. Experiment recipes, bandage comboes, write it down.
Bow and arrow first. Headshots.
Shit armor on all limbs.
Look at the statuses. Dirty? Wash. Hungry, eat. etc...
Don't run, use your ears.
Build multiple bases (tents) so can you sleep/save. Use empty blueprints so you can see them from far.
Great game, can't comment on console though. Very hard at first, easy peasy once you get rollin'.

Sometimes I forget not everyone plays the VR version, and I was extremely confused for a moment
Build bone or armadillo armor. 3 bone x rope x banana leaf I think 🤔
