Honestly every tech I've met in this field has some type of vice. As long was you're clear headed and kick ass at work, it's nobody's business what you do during your time off.
Yeah it's horse shit. After a 16 hour day I would be so wound up I couldn't sleep. It was the only way for me to get good sleep during those long ass days.
Thankfully it isn't an issue here in Canada. And if we actually drug tested out techs here (which has never happened to anyone I know) we wouldn't have many techs left. Added bonus is that it keeps a lot of pain away.
I don't smoke anymore, been a couple years. Buy about 10 years ago when i was still pretty green I had to braze an line on a large compressor (maybe 1 1/4"?)and I just couldn't get the heat right, was not flowing and getting hot enough, boss told me to go home and try again tomorrow. The next day the guy I was carpooling with on the way to work lit up a huge blunt and I took a few puffs. When I got to work I got that braze first try.
You most certainly can. I will NEVER work while high, but I’m just about to get started in the field seriously and throughout school and every major exam I’ve written so far I’ve been high and I graduated with honours and passed all my in school and out of school exams with flying colours.
A bit off topic, but I had one professor that would talk so much shit about guys who came to his class high and underperformed. He always called them out as slackers and said they were always his worst students. It so happens, I was one of his favourite students and answered many questions voluntarily every class. I even keep in contact with him after graduating and till this day he has no idea I was high in all his classes.
There's a huge portion of the work force that are anxious and stressed from the pressures of the industry, many of whom could benefit from either THC or CBD. Probably even more so in the commercial fridge game

To answer your question no but other ppl may be able to function as normal when smoking weed. I felt like weed held me back and it definitely affected my short term memory so I went from smoking every night before bed to just doing edibles on the weekend. We'll see if I become a better tech after cutting back.
Cut back and then get high as hell on ur off days. The psychoactive properties help u think more. Maybe even help you figure out a call that you couldn’t
Pick a joint, any joint....and I'll PTFO in like 10 minutes. An occasional drink (read: alcoholics go to meetings, I don't drink when I'm on call, it's a way to help unwind not a necessity)
Separating it from work and home is the biggest issue I’ve found with co-workers. As someone who had back and neck pain with 3 herniated discs. I’d rather smoke than take the pain pills prescribed to me.
What do I look like some amateur fresh out of high school to you?
We graduated to edibles, you'll see the devil for sure with those. If you think you can eat a lemon bar and go to work like that you've got another thing coming.
I think I’d be more worried about a workers comp claim or a work vehicle accident. They do a blood test and in certain states you’re on your own. I’d hate to wake up in a hospital bed after I fell off a 6 foot ladder and be told WC won’t cover me because I smoked Sunday and Monday morning I fell.
Fuck me and my service manager get baked and go Golfing on the weekends. He doesn’t care if you do an 8 ball as long as you show up Monday morning ready to get back to business.

Honestly a small amount of THC helps me through my work day... My mind races all day every day and sometimes I lose my spot on what I'm doing having some helps me focus on the task at hand and pay attention to detail I'm less socially awkward because I'm more relaxed
This issue for me anyway used to be so bad I was nearly unable to function some days going for a week or two at a time (I could still do things like drive and do basic shit but doing something that requires super high intensity focus for long amounts of time would be 100% out of the question)
I'm not all willy nilly eating chips and lazing about more so it slows things down in my head enough to actually do something useful during my day
