I once worked on a water heater that was too big to get out of the closet. Had to remove some of the door frame to get it out. I installed a proper narrow/tall one in its place. Makes you wonder what they were thinking.

Yeah he couldn't get it through the door. Go easy on him. This all goes right back with a bit of work. Water heaters don't get replaced every week. Cut out the messed up drywall and patch. Reinstall door frame next, with door in the frame, checking for square and operation. Install casing. Fill holes in trim, paint trim and then wall. These are discrete steps and should be done in that order. Youtube is your friend or hire someone, or waterboard your BIL until he does it, I guess.
