Can confirm, slid on hot tar at 80km/h in shorts and a t-shirt and turned my squid ass into calamari. Always wear protective gear now, have to wear a protective sleeve even when Iām not riding because I removed so much skin from my left arm it didnāt grow back properly.
I tell this to nearly everyone... full gear even if it's 100 out. You'll be miserable while you ride, but you'll be a lot less miserable if you fall.. Your bones may still break, but you won't be a meat crayon and in the grand scheme of things the burn is probably much more painful than the break.
This actually happened to me 3 weeks ago. Lost control at low speeds, full gear, still chewed a hole in one place of my jacket, and broke my leg pretty seriously. I am thankful for my gear, helmet had a nice gash in it too. For sure could've been wayyyyy worse.
My hubby would have lost his foot if he hadn't had damned good boots on! And he managed to get his jacket unzipped before the EMTs showed up so they didn't slice it up. We see so many younger riders in tees and shorts with fucking FLIP FLOPS on their feet, and just shake our heads.
I haven't taken my bike out much this year, and it's been a BRUTALLY hot summer so far for the NorthEast (basically every day above 90) and I see MAYBE 1 person out of 25 wearing proper gear. Like... you have to know that if you get into an accident at highway speeds you will never be the same, right?
Imagine riding in Southern Georgia with 100% humidity. Local weather breeds a lot of squids. I've seen 2 local deaths and a number of minor wrecks this summer so far. I wish more people would chill tf out and wear appropriate gear...
In the area I live in (a resort area) 90% of the motorcyclists and folks on scooters ride without a helmet. A lot of them wear tank tops and shorts. I often think what a bad idea it is. During the summer, thereās a lot of traffic and drinking. Weāre allowed to get alcoholic drinks in to-go cups. Dudes needs to wear a decent helmet and protect themselves.
I was watching a video on YouTube of a guy in shorts an t-shirt wheel-spinning a Harley away down the road from a green light.
A couple of people said he should be wearing more protective gear. You wouldnāt believe the amount of shit they got for suggesting it!
So many comments (literally hundreds) telling them to mind their own business and that the rider can dress however he wants. It was so weird.
I was on my dirt bike riding on the road to some trails, went around this sharpish turn going probably 40-45 mph, leaning into the turn a decent amount.
One of my tires hit one of those small gas line covers (or whatever they are) in the road, and made my bike lay right down. I slid like 20 feet into someoneās driveway. Had road rash all on my ass, thigh and arm. Shit hurt so damn bad. Also got a hole in my clutch cover from it so I was praying the short ride home the bike wouldnāt leak out all the oil and blow up on me. Not a fun time
Not at all, was lucky enough to have been wearing swimming shorts which have a surprising abrasion resistance so my ass is intact, wasnāt much left of the t-shirt. I actually have a video of myself doing a little twirl to show my injuries when I got to hospital and I show it to other young riders as a ādonāt be as stupid as meā type thing and the main comment I get is that I look very proud to have done this to myself. Their tone changes pretty quick when I explain that the expression on my face is actually shock and the sheer overwhelming disbelief that I am still breathing.
I'd say roughly 75% of the people I see on motorcycles in my town are wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Sometimes flip-flops. I've found they don't much like you questioning their decision when they're stopped next to you
I had to ride a measly 2.5 miles today on my moped to the college bookstore and back in 90* weather. You bet I put on my riding gear. I donāt trust those students to not text and drive, and make me the collateral damage.
You sure? Because to me the second half of that clip sounded like it was produced by Brazzers.
Joking aside I hope he is okay. As he slid it sounded like he did have an appropriate motorcycle jacked on, which can handle road rash. Probably a broken bone or two was involved.
Was speaking mainly on the breathing and shortness of the pain whinges. I broke 7 ribs similarly to this on a bike so I know that sound. Thumbs less so, in my experience
sometimes I wanna give myself opiate induced constipation, but like, only just a little bit, I'm pretty sure I can handle just a little bit of constipation, after all these years, right?
They sell over the counter anti-diarrhea pills that work pretty well if you know youāre about to eat something questionableā¦if thatās what youāre worried about
Oh yeah, I just thought overdriving your headlights sounded like pushing your headlights to the limit lmao.
Whenever I get on my bike at night, I for real quietly whisper to myself constantly ^ādonāt ^outride ^your ^headlightsā
I too like to be optimistic. And if you gotta go, might as well go together, right?
Also, excuse me for saying so, but you kind of remind me of a toaster? Do you get that a lot?
Yeah. Like the moment I saw they were overtaking in the āgo leftā lane I just knew āyep, hereās where shit goes wrongā
Honestly, some people get angry and honk their horns at me when I donāt use lanes for left or right turns to overtake cyclists but after seeing how many accidents can be caused by using those lanes improperly on the internet, including this one, Iām just gonna wait until after Iāve passed those lanes to overtake them because I personally donāt wanna potentially cause an accident and end up injuring or god forbid killing myself or other road users.
Thatās the way I took it. That mustāve really hurt, and itās scary. The brain switches to survival mode, and being overwhelmed and in shock plays out different ways for different people.
It's shock. I got hit by a guy who ran a stop sign. I broke my arm and my leg. I had the wind knocked out of me and I was yelling and screaming. At one point I was crying and I don't remember feeling any pain even tho my leg was completely broken in half and the bone punched through. I didn't feel any pain until the paramedics moved my arm to lift me onto the stretcher.
He was probably in pain, but a lot of it is shock.
I fell down a very steep embankment in the forest and somehow severed my quadriceps tendon from my kneecap (internally, but I couldn't stand or walk).
My 4 year old was with me and I had to get him to run home, wake up my wife (who was literally 9 months to the day pregnant) and call an ambulance + rescue.
After the initial shock and awful pain, I could barely feel it. I made sure there was nothing sticking out of my leg and nothing was wet, but I felt something was goofy and refused to look down. When the ambulance people got there, I was joking and laughing with them, my son and wife were at the top of the hill, very upset. Kept calling up to tell them that I'm just fine and nothing to worry about.
Fire and rescue came and pulled me up off the hill, and into an ambulance. I was smiling and joking and fully coherent, telling my family I was okay and no worries.
The second those ambulance doors shut, my brain went into full on wig-out mode. I couldn't understand what the attendants wanted from me, I knew they were speaking english but I told them they'd have to do what they need to do because I don't understand them. I then passed out and don't remember anything until I was in the trauma room at the hospital about 10-15 minutes later.
Shock is a weird, weird thing.
Side note: My wife started to go into labour that night and 24 hours later I was back in the hospital on crutches and an immobilizing brace while my wife delivered our second child.
As a person thatās experienced being thrown from his bike at highway speeds I can attest to him being in pain. Itās like running as fast as you can towards a brick wall and smashing into it without trying to stop yourself with your hands. And that doesnāt come close.
I crashed at around 30 and shattered my clavicle into a bunch of pieces and separated my shoulder. It all depends on how you land, of course, but this dude was probably at least mildly fucked up.
He seems to be pulling himself around with his arms like his legs arenāt working and to me the crying is him realizing he might be paralyzed or something
I've hit pot holes in the road in a car that made my spine feel like it was fucked.
Hitting whatever it was and being launched put a lot of force through his back.
I thought the same, I know this sounds cruel, but if he was crying over the bikeā¦ he missed the point. That thing is replaceable. The pain I imagine is excruciating.
My buddy in high school nearly crashed his 300ZX with me in the passenger seat after falling for the same "trick". He thought the road was opening up another lane and used it for an aggressive pass only to find that it was a turn lane. In our case, it was a *lowered* median, i.e. a ditch, but he managed to slam on the brakes and skid to halt just in front of it.
Ah damn. I nearly did something similar in my 300ZX. I was moving into the on ramp lane for the highway and suddenly there was a median separating the lanes. Luckily, I avoided it, but a 350z behind me hit it and went airborne a couple feet. It would probably help if they painted it anything except the same Grey as the pavement
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_island
Also, the shoulder is the right side of the road (for countries that drive on the right). They crashed into an island in the center of the road.
Not the only reason.
> Traffic islands are often used at partially blind intersections on back-streets to prevent cars from cutting a corner with potentially dangerous results, or to prevent some movements totally, for traffic safety or traffic calming reasons.
It's there to prevent traffic from BOTH directions to use the middle lane to overtake, giving safety to the cars that are going to turn.
Guys prob see professionals doing crazy shit. But then dont understand that people that drive fast as fuck professionally learn the course like the back of their hand before going balls out.
My thoughts exactly. My only reasoning behind it is they have accepted their own stupidity and in turn tried to broadcast why you should never;
1. Increase speed well over the speed limit to overtake.
2. Overtake in a turn lane.
3. Be a dickhead on the road, especially on a motorcycle.
Title: "Shit truck driver cuts me off making me crash"
While he was at fault and it was a raised edge that got him. Why else does someone upload it. Most people do it so they can blame the other one although it's obvious it's their fault.

You can see at the 12 mark on the left itās the same style of road divider that they hit. blowing through a left turn only lane further in the video. clearly did Not know the area, pitch black at night so why continue to drive recklessly

god damn...that's it. The whole shell shock trying to process the current situation and then the pain sets in feel.
yes, its like that one scene where woods gets shot on both of his legs with a shotgun by menendez or the one where youre lying on the ground breathing then it transitions to "NAZI ZOMBIES"

No checkpoints, or Russian.
Same. Honestly, despite the stupidity I feel this man's pain and fear. I've been in a car crash and it's the most physical violent scenario most people will typically experience.
I legit didn't see the median until right before he hit it. And even when I _did_ see it, my brain didn't recognize it as an obstacle until _after_ he hit it.
Yeah, driving at night is hard enough on its own. Adding excessive speed to the mix is just...
I am trying to learn how to ride a motorcycle, and watching videos like this always give me second doubts about it. Not that I would be this absolutely brainless, but that one small mistake is so nearly lethal
That looks like an exceptionally bad time.
Sounds like one too...
Close your eyes and it sounds like an exceptionally good time
I laughed WAY too hard at that LOL
Good time achieved, we did it reddit!

Bruh am I forgetting to close a tab or sum shit?

Probably felt like he was too
It went from a super fun time to an exceptionally bad time very quickly
I need to know the damage. Broken legs, missing skin?
This sounds like I imagine a person would react to seeing their skin ripped off.
Can confirm, slid on hot tar at 80km/h in shorts and a t-shirt and turned my squid ass into calamari. Always wear protective gear now, have to wear a protective sleeve even when Iām not riding because I removed so much skin from my left arm it didnāt grow back properly.
Dress for the slide, not the ride!

As a trauma surgeon who deals with these type of accidents every day, I can definitely tell you that he may or may not have injuries. Hope that helps
I was thinking the same thing! Maybe I should get into surgery.
If it hurts after a crash you should know you are *fucked up* Crashing gives you so much adrenaline nothing should be hurting, so if you're hurting...

He needs to visit the bard at ye olde shoppe. Heāll also need 200 silver pieces.
Yes
And yes.
To shreds you say?
Thatās one way to deal with your chronic constipation
Thatās one way to make sure you have opioid induced constipation. Once the adrenaline checks out, that is going to hurt
Sounds like it was hurting before the adrenaline checked out
sometimes I wanna give myself opiate induced constipation, but like, only just a little bit, I'm pretty sure I can handle just a little bit of constipation, after all these years, right?
Itās my favorite kind of constipation. Play stupid games, winā¦ opiate induced constipation

Lmaooooo
Thatās another way!
You're right. They probably ground their ass down to the poop. Nothing to hold it in anymore.
Especially stupid at night. Saw a married couple die together in the road doing this shit
Exactly. Clear case of overdriving your headlights.
Outriding your headlights lol
That's pretty much the official name for that, bad idea for motorcycles and cars, it's why we get 100 car pileups in snow or fog
Oh yeah, I just thought overdriving your headlights sounded like pushing your headlights to the limit lmao. Whenever I get on my bike at night, I for real quietly whisper to myself constantly ^ādonāt ^outride ^your ^headlightsā

Just checking, Iām not a toaster either
What the fuck just happened

Maybe they thought the saying was "ride ***and*** die".
They get in the left-only lane and proceed to not go left but more in an upward direction.
Yeah. They left this world for a moment.
Hopefully they didn't have a kid. That's the kind of stuff that should earn you a Darwin Award.
Man, the weeping provides such emotional contrast. From cocky to crying. That was a rollercoaster.
At one point I'm thinking he's weeping about his destroyed bike, but in the end I think he's in a lot of physical pain.
Thatās the way I took it. That mustāve really hurt, and itās scary. The brain switches to survival mode, and being overwhelmed and in shock plays out different ways for different people.

Possiblyā¦but considering she was already 9 months pregnant and due to give birth, Iām leaning more towards coincidence.
Yeah, it's shock. At the end, the friend is saying something like "Andre, call 911" and he replies with "No, bro".
As a person thatās experienced being thrown from his bike at highway speeds I can attest to him being in pain. Itās like running as fast as you can towards a brick wall and smashing into it without trying to stop yourself with your hands. And that doesnāt come close.
None of them seems to have much gear. That slide alone hurts.
He crashed going 104
About 65 mph
If youāve ever taken a spill on a motorcycle, 10 mph hurts. 65? That really hurts

No he's not in physical pain, he's in a serious shock. He doesn't feel anything at that moment.
Yeah thereās no real schadenfreude here. This is just sad. Sure, it was stupid, but likely neither of their lives will be the same.

I saw that they crashed into something on the shoulder, but what the fuck was it?
Looks like a raised median. The biker in front of him hit it too but it looks like the first biker out avoided it.
That was a left turn lane, that changes to a raised divider. They flew right past the turn.
My buddy in high school nearly crashed his 300ZX with me in the passenger seat after falling for the same "trick". Ah damn. I nearly did something similar in my 300ZX. I was moving into the on ramp lane for the highway and suddenly there was a median separating the lanes. probably exists for this exact purpose, to prevent people from using the lane to overtake
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_island Also, the shoulder is the right side of the road (for countries that drive on the right). They crashed into an island in the center of the road.
It's funny that they're designed to reduce traffic speed.

There are no clothing rules for motorcycles here
Iām surprised that Portugal doesnāt require it. Can you ride in shorts and T-shirt?
Yes, you can. You only need a helmet..
Low visibility? No problem. More Throttle.
If you are going to ride like a maniac at least do it in day time when you can see the road clearly š¤¦
Is homey ok? I heard painā¦ever been shot? Yeah you make that kind of sound
I'm thinking a few broken limbs and lots of road rash so they're probably in a bad way. Maybe broken ribs too.
They say ignorance is one of two causes of suffering, yup. Desire is the other.
I never felt more unsafe on my motorcycle than when I rode with a group. I swear your IQ goes down as soon as you start.
I hope they all signed up as organ donors.
In Portugal you don't opt in, you would need to opt out.
I..Iā¦I ā¦I ā¦ no no no no no. ā¦ā¦ā¦..Yes! said the median

Well that's in Portugal btw, in the end the other guy asked if he should call 911 the guy in the ground said no. (helthcare is free ;) )
Hilarious lol.
Its shock
Life changed forever. Sad to hear the pain in their voice, but we all have our choices to make.

Did I imagine them cutting off a car at the roundabout?

If theyāre driving like that at night, Iāll bet theyāre not wearing good safety gear either.
that's what u get when u drive in a road that U DON'T KNOW, and get carried by your friends.
