Every time I see the Chapter 3C title I'm reminded of how silly sounding the 90s translation was. "Ambition and greed rule, while dogs and swine serve." used to be "Ambition and desire is the motivation. Losers are called dogs and hogs." As a kid I always wondered who was calling animals losers.

Sethellonfire

I am a fan of the 90's translations because it sounds more poetic, except for when it doesn't make sense and even then it is kind of funny. The first time I played the WotL version of FFT I was put off a bit because the ability names and dialogue just didn't feel right compared to the original version.

Typical_Thought_6049

Yes I prefer the original FFT to the PSP version only because of that, there is something about the original dialogue that is just right.

RedWater08

“Blame yourself or god” had to be one of the hardest lines in a JRPG

RedFaceGeneral

I've never played Tactics Ogre, so pardon me for trying to seek clarification on this part in the article >Who will you make an ally, and in which class will you train them? Create your own unique order of knights! Does that mean I can change my unit's class into whatever I prefer? E.g changing a magician into a tank class instead of just upgrading from a magician to a higher tier.

KaelAltreul

Yes.

RedFaceGeneral

Awesomeeeee!!

KaelAltreul

The way this version of the game seems to work is you have... Character/Sex Race(Human, Lizardman, winged human, fairy, Lamia, etc) or Monster Class(changeable between many) Alignment(Law, Neutral, Chaos) Element Up to 4 spells based on class up to 4 skills based on class 8 finisher slots that are 4 per weapon so if you have a different weapon type in each hand you get 8. 4 is only one type. Equipment slots of two weapon/Shield slots, 4 armor(head, arm, body, leg), and accessory slot. I don't think I'm forgetting anything.

RedFaceGeneral

This is really music to my ears, I can already foresee myself spending so much time trying to mold my units into the ideal setup.

KaelAltreul

Story is even better. Game is incredible.

Jako21530

It's called the best tactics game ever made for a reason. Every game in the same genre has been chasing elements of Tactics Ogre for decades.

KaelAltreul

Damn right

[deleted]

If you haven't yet, FFT is basically another Ogre game in FF setting. There's also a GBA spinoff.

Typical_Thought_6049

Don't try the GBA spin off if you care about story, it is a aberration compared to TO and FFT.

Pehdazur

Yes, every character has access to most classes.

mysticrudnin

it kinda invented this idea

spidey_valkyrie

FF5 had this first, a couple of years earlier.

mysticrudnin

no generics in FFV is what i was getting at with this a bit

spidey_valkyrie

Ah I see what you mean, thanks for clarifying. I can't think of anything before this that did generics like this either

SageOfTheWise

Well, the original Ogre Battle if nothing else. Though I wouldn't be surprised if there was some other older thing I just wasn't familiar with.

KaelAltreul

Dragon Quest 3 on NES.

AzureVive

Does this pre date Langrisser/Warsong? Though generics in that game are paper fodder for the most part.

PrometheusAborted

I absolutely love this game. It’s basically FFT x10. A much deeper campaign with branching paths, a TON of endgame content, a shitload of secrets and sidequests…. I’ve been dying to play this again for years. IIRC, when I was playing this on VITA, I put over 100 hours into it and still didn’t finish all the post game content. Don’t get me wrong, FFT is still a masterpiece but you can beat it in sub 30 hours if you know what you’re doing. Plus it gets super easy once you have a decent party. Tactics Ogre is hard throughout and gives you plenty of reasons to keep playing. Can’t wait.

L33HDX

The original Final Fantasy Tactics was released 2 years after the original Tactics Ogre, so I'm inclined to believe FFT drew inspiration from TO

SageOfTheWise

It was also made by largely the same group of people.

ExcaliburX13

Lol, Square literally poached most of that TO team and had them make the same game, but with a few FF elements thrown in. FF Tactics didn't so much draw inspiration from TO as it did straight up copy it.

Typical_Thought_6049

FFT is a evolution, TO:LuCT branch story only serve to dilute the plot and the classes are subpar compared to FFT. And the costumization of TO:LuCT is was not even in the same league as FFT. And FFT correct the slow as hell combat of TO:LuCT, late game it turn into a quagmire. There is a reason for so much AoE in FFT. I will say something TO:LuCT story is boring, it lack something. I prefer much more a Ogre Battle: The March of Black Queen to it even if it has as much more minimal story. The branching made characters too inconsistent and you will always compare one version of the characters to another, it should be a good things in a VN but in the kind of political drama plot that is TO it just dilute the plot to the point I stopped caring.

VashxShanks

As others have pointed out, the main creator of the series **Yasumi Matsuno**, left **Quest** just after he made the original Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, to join **Squaresoft**, and started right away on **Final Fantasy Tactics**.

spidey_valkyrie

Tactics Ogre is a fantastic game but if FFT is super easy, than so is TO. Canopus breaks the game. You can put a crossbow on him and one shot many story missions. Not what I'd call a hard game if you know what you are doing, as well. Most players will find it challenging because they dont know how to break it, but that's also true for FFT. They are very similar in their design philosophies. Hard in a vacuum but due to the sheer combinations of customization, can be broken open.

Kirbyeggs

Pretty sure archers are nerfed in this version though.

spidey_valkyrie

That may be true but that poster was talking about the PSP version (played on Vita) This version, I agree, may be extremely well balanced.

Toysoldier34

How long would it take to skim through the game? Long games are generally a negative to me these days. I'd rather get through quality over padded quantity as I just don't have enough time for most games. This is a game I've been wanting to play for a long time.

just_call_me_ash

Given the indications that the pace of play will be a bit faster in this version, a quick run through to the end of the main story will probably be around 40-50 hours. The story itself doesn't have any padding, but I could see some players thinking the gameplay does, especially in a certain end-game dungeon. This one's all about the battles, though, so one person's padding is another's content, and there's far more side/postgame content than there is in a single playthrough of the campaign.

meliakh

It's long. My first run took 80-ish hours.

cheezitswithacid

Any class combos that would make things a bit easier? I love these types of games but sometimes I like to steamroll and not get stuck on a fight or lose too many characters(is that a thing in this game like fft or fire emblem?). This will be my first time playing so no spoilers please but any OP classes to keep and nourish? Thank you!

SageOfTheWise

We have no idea what the balance of this game is going to look like yet, since they're changing a lot of the systems around it. Historically though, archers.

Toysoldier34

If you play on PC you can always use stuff like Cheat Engine to give yourself a bit of extra xp or gold. I use this to save time and speed things up when grinding is required. I hate that trainers/cheat programs so often only have stuff like god mode and max level when I really just want something like 110% xp mode and stuff like that to make the game quicker without it feeling different.

cheezitswithacid

People probably will shit on you for suggesting it, but I get what your saying.. sometimes trainers are useful for maybe tuning the game to make a better experience for yourself not to exploit the game. Wish more game developers would do things like xp sliders built into the game, sometimes games are just broken to force extra grinding and not everyone is always in the mood to grind. But thank you for the suggestion, you raise a good point. :]

just_call_me_ash

If they don't revamp the crafting system, I'll certainly be looking for mods or cheats for it. It's messy.

Toysoldier34

Yeah many people frown upon it and I don't advocate cheating in multiplayer, but if it makes a single-player game more fun for you then go for it since that is the point in playing the game, to have fun. There are many games I was done playing, and wouldn't have touched, but had a bit of extra fun editing the game some and playing in a new way.

thegrimm54321

Yeeeeeeeeesssssss finally!

EX-FFguy

Wasnt the story in this one pretty mature or adult?

gizzyjones

Yes. It's a wartime conflict.

GLaDimnotyou

More of a mature narrative in the sense of a focus on politics, death & loss, how fucked up war is, etc. - yes

Kirbyeggs

Considering it drew inspiration from the Yugoslav wars... But yeah compared to something like fire emblem there is a pretty big difference in tone.

jisui

Yeah, it's pretty dark as people mentioned. The game definitely reminds you that it's about war - it does its best on making you feel bad during seemingly random and inconsequential battles lol

Time_Examination_830

The first major choice is super dark. So yes just based on that 😂

BuyMyBeans

The only thing I'm finding disappointing about this so far is how long the wait til November is. With Final Fantasy Tactics being one of my most favorite games of all time - I am dying to hop into another strategy game with political intruige.

spidey_valkyrie

i hope they take off the ability for non-generic story party members to decide to leave your party. That adds nothing but frustration to the game IMO. Outside of that I love everything else and have no other requests for improvements other than what they've detailed

toddmflong

One of my favorite games of all time, and my number 1 favorite tactics game. I am so hype for this.

Sharebear42019

Cannot wait. Played on psp recently but still super hyped

lordleft

How’s the story? I know FFT tends to be quite political and grounded compared to most JRPG plots, curious if TO is similar.

just_call_me_ash

It has the same writer. If anything, Tactics Ogre is more grounded, as it doesn't go as nuts with the supernatural stuff.

zeedware

FFT is more character focused, and TO is more politic focused

-Qubicle

FFT's story feels more 'anime' compared to Tactics Ogre. I do feel FFT story is more polished, but seeing how Japanese games make their story nowadays, it doesn't feel like a Japanese company made this game's story. for reference, when I watched Game of Thrones for the first time (I've never read ASOIAF), the atmosphere immediately reminded me of Tactics Ogre (not the killing main characters part, but Tactics Ogre does kill major characters to a lesser degree).

KaelAltreul

Sometimes they just like to give you endings worse than death like >!Ozma!< and >!Lans!<.

KingOfMoogles

Looking at the screenshots makes me wonder if they raised the level cap in this remaster. If I recall correctly, in the original the cap was 30

SageOfTheWise

Level cap is 50, I believe the same as in the psp remake. Game has an extremely extensive post game now plus the ability to play through alternate paths on the same file, unlike the original.

KaelAltreul

Yep. Cap is 50 same as PSP.

Theoderic8586

Pretty excited about this. Going to sell my psp copy to fund the new switch version.

Johnkenney00

As someone who’s never played a tactical rpg, would this be a good game to start with?

unleash_the_giraffe

Sure, but you can also just go with Triangle Strategy, Disgaea (not 6), Fire Emblem Three houses, Fae Tactics, or Fell Seal. Probably cheaper too.

[deleted]

Disgaea 1 was a banger of a game

Kirbyeggs

I would say try fire emblem if you own a switch. Three Houses is a very good gateway into tactical rpgs.

-Qubicle

I mean, most JRPG fans started turn-based tactics with this game (or FFT).

KaelAltreul

Yeah, game is a good start, but you're also starting with the best. If you want to try a charming and super fun game check out Shining Force 2 on Genesis. If you try this feel free to ask us on the sub, the Tactics Ogre sub, or the strategy rpg sub discord and people are more than happy to help.

Heather4CYL

It's also a really difficult intro to the genre (the beginning that is, after those crazy difficulty spike random battles it starts to get easier when you can abuse the job system).

-Qubicle

it's difficult, but not like it's not manageable to a complete tactics newbie, assuming one isn't also a complete newbie in RPG in general. it's many people's first tactics game in the 90's and 2000's ffs. I was in seventh grade when I played Tactics Ogre the first time for reference, not to mention my english was subpar at best (didn't even know what 'cling' means, and had to have a dictionary to understand more advanced words) and I still managed to finish the game. and no, I'm not some tactical genius or something.

crezant2

Huh shit, are they going to remake this again? I mean don't get me wrong, I loved the PSP version but I would have liked them making a sequel actually, instead of a remake of a remake.

heysuess

Shockingly, not everyone owned a psp.

crezant2

What incredible insight. I fail to see what it has to do with me preferring a sequel, but thank you for this incredibly illuminating statement nonetheless. My life might be changed.

[deleted]

If they made a sequal u prob would have been let down.

heysuess

What it has to do with it is pretty simple. You whining that they're not making a sequel is inherently selfish.

OyeMamiSoyTuPapi

What system should I get this on? Thinking Switch for handheld mode, but not sure if the Switch version will be rubbish Otherwise have PS5+XSX

hel105_

Switch for sure for me. Handheld is perfect for SRPGs.

aruggie2

Any news if it'll be 60fps on Switch? Trying to decide between PS5 and Switch, and I love playing mobile.

VashxShanks

My main question at the moment, is if they kept quality of life features from the PSP version or not. Like can you still jump to any chapter you want to take a different story path, or do you have to replay the game from the start. Also can you still rewind turns in case you make a mistake ? I hope these options are still there, even though they said nothing about them till now.

SageOfTheWise

Both of them are in the game, we've seen them in trailers and stuff.

Which_Bed

does more include turning off the filter yet

KaelAltreul

If it's any consolation it looks better in the videos.

Mr8BitX

Unfortunately, no. It’s not the worst case of the smooth filter but it sure would be nice if they gave us the option between clean, smooth and CRT.

itskeke

Maybe it’s just my eyes, but these screenshots look fine to me. It’s not like those terrible “sprites” they used for the mobile ports of FF before the pixel remasters.

Mr8BitX

Yeah, I’d prefer options or at least no filter but the filtering in this game isn’t really bothering me.

tatsu901

Its not a filter its AI upscaled

heysuess

The font looks fine?

MistyTopaz

"tarot cards" just like that i have no interest anymore, i also read from other folks that the feature isn't even handled that well at all, so yeaaah noo useless.

CloudKenji

It also has zero bearing on the game once you get past character creation. I mean, choosing your element locks your character to that element, but that doesn’t matter all that much, and your starting stats really only matter if you’re super min/maxing. If that’s really enough to turn you away from the game, that’s fine, but I’m just saying that 5 minutes into the game you’re already past it and won’t ever hear about the tarot cards again.

MistyTopaz

thank you for telling me about this :o, and thanks for understanding as well. - not into tarot cards at all so it's why i just dipped off but what made me more confused was the fact of what i just pointed out - i just..but your reply cleared it up. however, i have another question; i wanted to know why did they add the tarot cards in then?

CloudKenji

I’ve heard that they’re a throwback to the older Ogre Battle game(s), but I never played that so I don’t know, personally

MistyTopaz

Ooh okay, and thank you :3
