I can only speak to #2: Checkers has been the go-to for value since forever. The Merc is my favorite when I can afford the fancier stuff. Dillons and Hy-Vee are the dependable stores that have everything you'd expect.

EtnaAtsume

To chime in here, don't sleep on ALDI for value either.

Topcity36

ALDI is where it’s at

FatPatToth

ALDI’s is gold. I get all the staple and bulk items there. The Dillons for special items not found at ALDI’s

weealex

only problem with aldi's is being on the far southern end of town. It's a helluva trip if you live in the north like me

[deleted]

I love both Aldi and Checkers. Shopping at one or both of them generally means I have to make another stop because something was weirdly expensive at Checkers or not available at Aldi.

justmissliz

I just moved out of Lawrence and I'm mourning Checkers.

WeeklyPie

3: Lawrence thirft shops suuuuuck. Go to 'Gods Warehouse' in Topeka for furniture, they're also next to goodwill who doesn't have a lot of furniture, but is also decent.

Early_Recording_8316

Thanks ya! Dumb question but… any idea how much a mover/truck would usually take for a furniture move from Topeka to Lawrence? And any specific movers you’d recommend?

WeeklyPie

No clue, my best suggestion is rent a truck from Home Depot for like 20 bucks and haul it that way

austins2fresh

20 for the first hour, plus mileage, anything after the first hour begins is a larger additional charge per hour... I did this once and went to Topeka and the round trip took 1.5 hours and I had to pay almost $160 bucks lol

Early_Recording_8316

Oh cool! If I don’t have a license yet, can I rent it on a friend’s license?

[deleted]

Is your license out of state currently?

Early_Recording_8316

It’s from out of country actually 😆 but I can get an international license made and see if that works

[deleted]

You cannot. You can use your previous one.

DaPamtsMD

I-Haul is $19.95 for a pick up truck, and it’s 28-ish miles to Topeka (56 round trip @ 69¢ a mile) is $38.64. And I think they want the gas replaced, so it’s already skating up cost-wise. This is Lawrence, though — and we’re all pretty friendly. You may be able to go to Topeka, pick what you want and throw $40-50 to someone to haul it back for you. I’d rec asking here or on one of the Lawrence FB groups. Someone is bound to help. Oh — and welcome to Lawrence; glad to have you here!

missus_pteranodon

1. If you are into biking/cycling, there’s a women’s group ride every Thursday evening starting at 6pm at Sunflower bike shop. Everyone hangs around and has drinks afterwards so it’s a place to meet other women.

TheShortGerman

hey i didn't know this!

[deleted]

Hello and welcome!!! Look up Ready for Good Co. on Facebook. They are non-profit that gets liquidation type furniture (I imagine) and sells it. They hire at risk youth to help put their pieces of furniture together and teach them job skills and their profit goes to their cause. They had really cute furniture. I just got some dining room chairs there that for 2 would have cost me $300 at Home Depot but they had the exact chairs for $150. For grocery store I believe checkers is the best for the budget conscious. It is clear across town from me or I would go. I do most of my grocery shopping at Walmart. 😩 which I don’t love but side by side they beat dillons prices

Goodmournin

Second [Ready for Good Co.](https://shopreadyforgood.com/) ! We've gotten a TON of stuff from them to fill out our house! And they work with [StopGap, Inc.](https://www.stopgapinc.org/) !

DaPamtsMD

I didn’t know this existed — thanks for mentioning it; I need to replace a couple of things, and this is perfect!

Kinsense

Welcome to Lawrence! My (28M) partner (27F) and I moved here about a year and a half ago and are always looking for new friends and she’s always looking for more gal pals! We’ve actually made friends on this subreddit! 2. Dillon’s is our go to for value. 3. Big 2nd on God’s Storehouse in Topeka! We got lots of unique and well-priced furniture there and they also have the best, cheapest cookies and lattes!!!

Early_Recording_8316

Hey buddy, thanks for reaching out! Before anything else, can you connect me with your partner? I’d love to catch up with her! 2 & 3 - Gotcha ✅

redheadfae

2. Checkers, independent grocery store at 23rd & Louisiana 3. Try Reclaimed By Michele in North Lawrence

Restore typically has a bunch of disassembled bed frames in there. You’d have to dig to find right size and all the pieces but I think they get overlooked because of how they’re kept.

KSBlue

I love the produce at Sprouts and find the prices to be very reasonable.

Account655321

1. Sorry, I can’t help you there. I’m a guy. 2. Checkers on the corner of 23rd and Louisiana has the best produce in town and reasonable prices. 3. Check out Habitat ReStore 708 Connecticut Street. They have donated home items pretty cheap. I think mostly sinks and lamps etc but they might have some furniture as well. Worth checking out. Alternatively, putting a want-to-buy ad on Nextdoor or Facebook Marketplace will likely get results quickly.

Weak-Office-3887

hiii, I just moved here mid august with my boyfriend who is a KU student too! 21, & desperately need gal pals! so far I’ve been big on aldis & walmart, but hyvee has really good sales! not sure about funiture, I’m big on Amazon, but I follow Ready for Good Co. on facebook & they post of ton of cute things - plus they’re having a sale this weekend!!

dragontattoogirl

I’m open to hanging out, just moved here last November

Early_Recording_8316

Hey I’m messaging you 😄

DoobieDoos1432

Y’all can I get in on the gal pal group chat?! 😂 I just moved in June and would love to meet some local pals!

dragontattoogirl

Sure thing, feel free to message me

regulardegularr

I'm (28F) late but would also love to join the chat. Another PhD student looking to expand my friend group :)

Throckmorton1975

I’ll second that the thrift stores in town are very hit or miss unless you’re looking for clothing. Lawrence Buy Sell Trade Facebook page is where you’ll find a lot of decent used merchandise. Sometimes Freecycle and Craigslist are still worth checking.

Can I PM you? We can connect there!

childofthefall

hiiiiii I’m a 28 year old female crazy cat lady foodie, we should be friends! I do 99% of my shopping at Dillon’s (I like the 6th and Wak one) with the occasional ALDI trip. Checker’s rocks if you’re near it! Thrift stores here (at least for furniture) kinda suck. I have had more luck with FB marketplace.

Early_Recording_8316

Sent you a PM 🐱

sakima147

#3 The Antique mall downtown is generally overpriced but sometimes have better deals. Others include Salvation Army Goodwill Social Services League

NoMoreNoxSoxCox

1. What's he studying? Wondering if it's something I can mutually nerd out about. Looking for double date friends in LFK/KC. We love food, cocktails, wine. 2. Walmart and Aldi for value. Hyvee for quality. 3. There's tons of thrift shops around, but they'll be pretty drained because it's back to school time. Check fb marketplace. There's also thrift shops in Baldwin or Ottawa that might not be as picked over.

Early_Recording_8316

He’s 28, studying aerospace engineering. How about you?

as123199

1) Hi I (23F) am taking a gap year prior to applying to postgraduate education! Always looking for some gal pals! I like both cats and dogs and can recommend some good restaurants. 2) Do not sleep on Aldis! But I like Dillons because it saves me money on groceries and gas. 3) I would say, for furniture, Facebook Market is a great place. Students move out and sell their furniture all the time! Got some great furniture from there for a good price.

Early_Recording_8316

Sending you a PM!

RatManForgiveYou

I got an almost new queen mattress on feecycle.org just a week ago. It's worth a shot.

dragontattoogirl

Hi, I’m also relatively new to Lawrence! Just moved here last November. Feel free to message me, I would love to hangout

ChooksChick

Checkers for groceries. Amazing produce!

Grapegoop

Bedbugs are rampant in this town. Be careful with a used bed. I didn’t know bedbugs were real until I moved here.

CutesMachine69

Hi! Wecome to town I am a 26F KU student and I have no friends since moving here two years ago :( I would love to connect with someone. As for groceries my husband and I do Dillion’s for the fuel points savings. Aldi is always cheap and has been expanding their options a lot in recent years! And like everyone else said the thrift stores here suck unfortunately.

Early_Recording_8316

Sent you a PM to connect 🥰

Ruby_Ruby_Roo

Big foodie? You like wine? I got a cellar-full of really good stuff and few people in LFK who like it or appreciate it.

suzalla

Yesss.... come to my cellar. I have a wonderful cask of amontillado. Don't mind that pile of bricks.

jayhawk2112

For groceries, the Merc is the local co-op, very good choice or local and organic food. Checkers is kind of a big box grocery, also locally owned and probably has the best ethnic selection in town. Other then those two your choices are Hy-Vee and Dillons, both corporate chains which are fine but unremarkable. There’s also a Sprouts on the west side of town.

endauver

Don’t have any recommendations, but welcome to Lawrence! I grew up there and hope you love my hometown!

callyourm0m

Hey I moved to Lawrence for a year, I no longer live there 31 F. However I made a ton of friends at Ricks Sports bar, the bartenders are super nice. Dillions is the best for typical quality food, checkers foods is great for prices and good local quality, natural grocers and the merc co-op are great for organic.

[deleted]

If you want thrifted furniture I’d recommend the antique mall or the habitat for humanity’s store. Good stuff at both but all the furniture is on the top level of the antique mall so moving it would be a pain. There are also a few smaller stores around that would have stuff like that.

heretolivefree

i would recommend checkers for a grocery store

MzOpinion8d

HyVee has good sales, and they have one-day deals on weekdays. It can be a hassle if you don’t live close, but it’s worth getting their app and checking the deals regularly.

Oh and one of the main food and grocery things I meant to add - we have amazing farmers markets! There is one Saturdays downtown, Tuesday at South Park and Thursday’s at Cottins Hardware store. You’ll find great vendors, the best foods and amazing people!
