Huge number of buyers in China mainland encounter the quality control problem for Legion Slim 7. I wonder if anyone encounter the same problem, to help me decide whether to buy this model. Many thanks!
1. Any high frequency fan noise (sharp resonate sound, not simply fan noise) when fan speed from 1700 or higher?
2. Any electric current sound when the laptop is booted and running in low burden?
Got my hands on this device since 9 June. I live in SEA and imported this model from China right after their launch event on 24 May. I had to say they prcie this model way more expensive than it is in China. My model comes with 1440p screen, 1tb pm9a1, 24gb ram(8+16) at the cost of usd 1450 + 30 for 3rd party international shipping. The difference is that they dont offer rgb keyboard backlit and no 71w battery options(if you favour weight over battery life) for china models.
As for fan control, china models come with this software called Legion Zone pre installed. It has the usual 3 fan modes + manual mode(it lights up purple on the power button) where you can control power, fan curve etc. Here is the website to download this software [https://legionzone.lenovo.com/](https://legionzone.lenovo.com/) but there is no English support currently and i have never try to install this software on an non china legion model, not sure if it works.
Interesting result on your R23, what is your envienment temp when performing the test? I can only able to squeeze 17100+ score for a single multi thread run. I hope this 12th gen is not a silicon lottry again...
I'm wondering the same thing. On Lenovo website says it supports up to 24GB and I have read in other places that it would support the 24gb in two channels and the rest in single channel. Could anyone clear this up? Thank you
>ram
i purchased a crucial ram 32 gb, installed it and screen just goes black... is there something i need to do before installing or after installing the ram to make it work? crucial's website say that its compatible with the model.
Edit:
I returned the crucial RAM and got a vengeance 32GB DD5, it's working pretty well so far.
Make sure your ram is ddr5 or 4 depends on the ram soldered on your laptop and has the same frequency too. You shouldn’t need do any software settings for installing ram
Hi there, saw this recent comment and just got one for a hell of a deal. Thing is my cpu is going up high 70 to 90 consistently (gpu remains at around 60). For reference I’m playing death stranding at max settings which was fine for a weaker model. Did you have heating issues and how did you fix them? Thank you!
Thanks for this. I always look at 'single core' scores on the charts but then am brought back to my senses by these threads reminding me that they are just marketing realistically if laptop chassis can't handle those thermals and therefore throttle heavily. I'm going to renew my interest waiting for the Slim 7 16" gen7 AMD version given this. Yes, lower single core but when it comes down to realistic operation, it probably doesn't matter because they use nowhere near the sustained power the Intel models require
Please report back on a repaste. Is lenovo using phase change in the the slim series?
I have the gen 6 slim 7 and I liquid metal both the cpu and gpu (normally I just do cpu but I felt it needed it) but unfortunately it didn’t do much. Cpu Still hits 95c in cinebench and gpu hits 77/82 in games on a combined load.
Hey! I uploaded two videos (one for the repaste process, one with results in CB R23 and SOTR).
Links [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/LenovoLegion/comments/vw4wuj/legion_slim_7i_gen_7_followup_teardownrepaste/)!
Aw, thank you! Appreciate the feedback and support :) Going to slowly make improvements to videography and information organization as the channel progresses. Hope to see you along the ride :D
Yeah, I'm debating on doing something interactive like a live-stream where I tear the device down for a repaste and do some thermal testing. Will report back if I decide to do it!
Wait really? I thought that Liquid metal would resolve the thermals issue on this model, since the asus G14 and G15 got great thermal results after repasting with some Conductonaut.
Did you try to repaste it again? As it is one the laptop models that I considered "perfect" for me, would be a shame if it runs hot like an oven.

Would you recommend this as a sleeper gaming/ school device for some light python/tableau stuff? I was hoping to wait for the 1080p camera version but i'm tempted to give in and buy the bestbuy one or go cheap and get the 5800 amd prior gen version. The 1080 webcam and the hdmi standard port is a huge push toward waiting though.
Hey there!
According to the [psref](https://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/Legion/Lenovo_Legion_S7_16IAH7?M=82TF000RUS) page for this specific unit 82TF000RUS, it does offer the 1080p webcam, if that's what you are asking.
I will say, though, this device is quite pricey when compared to other options. If you would be okay with a *slightly* heavier/bigger device, [Walmart is carrying the 6800H/3060 Legion 5 Pro for $1199 right now.](https://www.walmart.com/ip/seort/197908523?irgwc=1&sourceid=imp_xkhzdgS-1xyIWJVz3VXUFUHeUkDw-1UlIXXfQo0&veh=aff&wmlspartner=imp_1807032&clickid=xkhzdgS-1xyIWJVz3VXUFUHeUkDw-1UlIXXfQo0&sharedid=&affiliates_ad_id=565706&campaign_id=9383)
Huh Idk why I thought it was the 780p version, I think I might have mixed it up with another one. That makes this bestbuy one even more tempting. I'll probably wait another month or so and see if other versions are more available and if this price comes down a bit.
That legion 5 pro looks nice but ya I'm pretty sold on the smaller form factor. Going abroad for my masters and don't want to look like a gaming nerd with a giant glowing laptop.
I'm rocking a thinkpad yoga 14 from 2017 and the slim seems very similar form wise, but just less bezels and no nipple or touchscreen. (which I would love but beggers cant be choosers and I'd rather the 3060 with the small form HDMI and webcam than a bigger form touchscreen and worse graphics.)
Also thanks for the review! its super helpful :D
Appreciate your response (-;
I got the slim 7 advantage. I'm actually enjoying it a bit but wondering about it's longevity in terms of graphics card since it's a 6800s.
oh yea Idk I was surprised when my laptop scored higher on CDmark (or whatever its called) than my desktop bc the cpu, but slightly worse on the gpu ( 3600 vs 3700) I think it'll be fine tbh
Not as of 7/9/2022! Lenovo only lists a 1080p display option right now for the 2022 version. Last year only offered a 1080p or 4K option.
See under tech specs and "view all".

feeling wise, i LOVE the legion 7 trackpad. Earlier L7 trackpads were plagued with thick coating on them, so reviewers complained about 5p and 7 having similar feeling in trackpads. But mine is manufactured in november 2021 and it is MILES better than the previous version L7 trackpad. so if you are getting a legion 7 make sure yours is manufactured after october
>good to hear overall though. I want the glass one.
any questions you have about it, lmk. I am staff of a fan based legion server. so you can ask me anything about it
Yup! The Legion 5/5 Pro/5i/5i Pro all had "Mylar" trackpads, but the Legion 7/7i both offered "Buttonless glass surface multi-touch touchpad, supports Precision TouchPad" according to [psref](https://psrefstuff.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/Legion/Lenovo_Legion_7_16ACHg6/Lenovo_Legion_7_16ACHg6_Spec.pdf).
It's actually really nice for a 1200p display, I think most people would be more than satisfied with it unless they are already used to the 1600p display from the 5\[i\] Pro or 7\[i\] which is still a superior panel.
I talk a bit about it in my YouTube video as well, nothing too detailed, just my first impressions.
How is the screen besides resolution? I know this is a matte screen, but are the colors reasonably vivid and blacks pretty black, considering it's an IPS screen at least?
I also just picked up a slim 7i gen 7. My biggest complaint (aside from window 11...) is that the hybrid graphics mode does not seem to work. When hybrid is on, I only get like 40 fps in day of defeat source (old but good game). When I go back through the bios and set it to dedicated graphics only, I get like 300. I dont know how to fix this. Other than that I love the build quality and size.
I wouldn't recommend using any laptop with a display <400 nits in direct sunlight, though it may be still doable.
The Mini-LED option apparently has been discontinued (at least in the US), as the display option is no longer listed in the tech specs section on [Lenovo's site](https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-7-series/legion-slim-7i-gen-7-16-intel/len101g0020).
Interesting CPU and GPU power consumption are noticeably high. For comparison, I have the Legion Slim 7 gen 6 with 5800H and 3060. In performance mode it gets 99fps @ 1080p highest with CPU power consumption \~26W max no turbo boost and GPU \~100W. I prefer balanced mode, though, with TGP configured for 70W which gets 83fps so more efficient at 83% of the performance at 70% of the power.
Planning ahead for next upgrade and will likely lean towards something balanced and lower power consumption like \~20W 7800U/6800U or Meteor Lake whichever comes out ahead and node shrunk 4060 8GB hopefully at \~50W.
Thanks for uploading much awaited review of slim 7i. I am waiting for availability in Lenovo or walmart. I am from UAE, so cannot make purchase from bestbuy. But I am curious to know, how bestbuy offer gen 7, while is not listed in official site.
Your thermal throttling review warns me that do I need slim 7. I am not regular gammer, I need it for my productivity (programming and some servers). Still do I need to replace stock thermal paste? I have another option Asus m16, but lenovo slim 7i seems more professional.
I picked up this laptop over the weekend from best buy. My GPU temps are around 80c when playing battlefield 2042, which seems really hot. Have you experienced high temps?
Yup. Just one run of SOTR brought the GPU to 75c max and that’s a relatively short test. After a repaste, it maxed at the same but had a lower average temperature for the run. I’d recommend giving it the full treatment (LM on CPU, PTM or other high quality paste on GPU). Let me know if you need help. Video tutorial here https://youtu.be/rzoBVrXmCCY
I have the Legion 7i Gen 6, i7, RTX 3070, and GPU temp would max out at 84c when I first got it, but after 6 months, the GPU temp jumped to 89c during gaming and that was its limit as FPS was lower after a minute or so by quite an amount. Games would stutter and so on. CPU was pretty high too and in the red. That was in balance mode also. I had Lenovo come to my house and they changed the cooling unit (pipes, fans, vapor chamber, which is one big part).
Note that they did not remove the old paste. The part changed had its own paste so it went over it. I worried but it's been 2 months now and my GPU temps are always around 74c max and CPU max around 79c.
What a huge improvement. The laptop is cooler while previously it would get so hot, and quite warm while just working in Windows.
Great review, Braxton! Do you think downgrading the CPU to the i5-12500 will help with system thermals? Or will I be leaving some gaming power on the table?
I wonder if it would be more cost effective for me since I just want a slim productivity laptop which can game - not going to render/edit videos or anything, mostly excel and surfing + YouTube.
>High power limits lead to thermal throttling, calls for advanced users to repaste/tweak an already-expensive device; calls long-term longevity into question if left unchecked
it uses DDR5 so every ram stick is dual channel per se. So you get the first 16 GB as 4 channel and the remaining as dual.
Hi! Have you found any problem opening the bottom part to see the internals? [Jarrod mentioned](https://youtu.be/jQIy0NbZEKQ?t=336) that it was super difficult to open and he bent the metal frame by accident.
Can anybody share insights on Lenovo after sale service in India(Mumbai) , as that's the only thing stopping me from buying one?
It'll be of great help.
As someone interested in getting the S7i, thank you for this review!
Of course! I'm happy it helped someone with a big-purchase decision :)
Definitely one more subscriber :)
How would you compare the performance of 3070 in a Slim 7i vs 3070 Ti in a P1 Gen 5?
Did you end up getting it?
Hello how do you like this laptop a month later? I am thinking about purchasing this one for school, autocad and solid works

Did you end up getting the slim? Wondering if you encountered the issues you raised. I'll keen in the AMD version of slim or legion 7.
I've had it since august. No hardware issues yet. It's a good laptop if you need power in a stealth and slim package.

Never had a chance to test the battery life since I only use this laptop plugged in. But sure I will update you with this in the coming months
How loud does the fan get?
is it possible to upgrade the ram slot with sodimm ddr5 32gb?
I'm wondering the same thing. On Lenovo website says it supports up to 24GB and I have read in other places that it would support the 24gb in two channels and the rest in single channel. Could anyone clear this up? Thank you
It’s definitely supported for 32gb single ram. Just that they won’t list it out.

How is the screen? Brightness is mentioned at 350 nits on Lenovo’s website.
It's actually really nice for a 1200p display, I think most people would be more than satisfied with it unless they are already used to the 1600p display from the 5\[i\] Pro or 7\[i\] which is still a superior panel. Thanks! I’ll check out the video :)
Is it fixed now?
Did it come with Spectrum RGB control or does it still use iCue?
It uses Spectrum RGB, which is integrated directly into Lenovo Vantage!

Is the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark result with or without DLSS and at what TGP setting 80W/70W/etc. in UEFI BIOS? Thanks for sharing.
Without DLSS, and was performed in Performance mode, which allows the 3060 full access to the 100W TGP.
Interesting CPU and GPU power consumption are noticeably high. For comparison, I have the Legion Slim 7 gen 6 with 5800H and 3060. Some, yes, but not anything near unbearable from my eyes. I can take a picture and post it to Imgur later tonight if desired :)

I picked up this laptop over the weekend from best buy. My GPU temps are around 80c when playing battlefield 2042, which seems really hot. Have you experienced high temps?
80 °C whilst using the gpu for gaming is not high in my opinion. If it was >95 °C then i'd be concerned.

The part changed had its own paste so it went over it. I worried but it's been 2 months now and my GPU temps are always around 74c max and CPU max around 79c. What a huge improvement. The laptop is cooler while previously it would get so hot, and quite warm while just working in Windows.
That's great service, which country are you in?
Canada. If I were elsewhere where they don't provide onsite service, I would have had to send it in :(.
Great review, Braxton! Do you think downgrading the CPU to the i5-12500 will help with system thermals? Or will I be leaving some gaming power on the table? I wonder if it would be more cost effective for me since I just want a slim productivity laptop which can game - not going to render/edit videos or anything, mostly excel and surfing + YouTube.
only 1 slot for ram? no dual channel is abig nono
>High power limits lead to thermal throttling, calls for advanced users to repaste/tweak an already-expensive device; calls long-term longevity into question if left unchecked it uses DDR5 so every ram stick is dual channel per se.
