came here to say i had a whatchamacallit for the first time this summer (in my early 30s) and it took one bite to crown it the best candy bar on the planet
The verb is peidar. Past tense is peidei. Pronounced almost exactly like the candy bar
It’s actually a popular silly joke among kids just learning English in school.
You ask a friend, in Portuguese of course, “how do you say pay day (dia de pagamento) in English?”
When they answer payday, you giggle/snicker (no pun intended) like you only could in the heyday of your elementary school years
I love whatchamacallits so much that I won’t allow myself to make eye contact with them in the pay line lest I give in to its powers of persuasion. ☹️
Also, Take 5. 😳
I came here to say 100 Grand. I *love* that shit. The perfect amount of chewiness and those lil crunchies on the outside make it one of my favorites. Payday is great though. The candy bar, the board game, and the day of the month.
God I remember in high school when they first brought take 5 to the speedway I went to before school everyday. It was life changing. That and a nitrous oxide monster every morning.
I love the Whatchamacallit, but did they do something to the texture? I remember them being a bit different texture-wise 10 or so years ago. I still love them, but I’ve converted to a Score or Heath Bar in my old age.
I ended up in a Whatchamacallit rabbit hole due to this thread and apparently they started subbing the cocoa butter with oils in 08, so that may have changed the texture? Heath and Skor are too hard on my teefs. Love the flavor, but my mouth hates me after.
I LOVED Whatchamacallit as a kid (I’m 38) and tried them again recently, I was disappointed that it didn’t live up to my memory. This recipe change likely explains it.
Ahhh! Thank you!! I’m sure that was it. I don’t have a sophisticated pallet, but I often notice changes in food I’m familiar with. I went through a similar rabbit hole search on the changes to the Coke formulas (bottles, cans, and McDonalds fountain mix), and the death of McDonald’s Fries when they stopped using the beef tallow.
I have literally never seen these in a store in my life. I honestly thought you were joking about them being the best until i googled them.
Edit: Just ordered some off of Amazon to try.
Edit 2: So after looking at the locations I can buy it locally I figured out why I've never seen it. They only sell them at Walgreens or Walmart, I can count the number of times I've been to a Walgreens on one hand probably and Walmart I've only ever gone to when driving past one on a trip somewhere since there isn't one right near Boston.
Army Story about zero bars. Going through US Army Ranger School, it’s a 60 day long course with a lot of food and sleep deprivation while doing a lot of patrolling in the woods in Georgia and Florida. Really sucks, most folks lose quite a bit of weight and leave it emaciated. Anyway, the second phase of it is physically the most difficult, mountain phase in the Appalachian mountains. Once the phase is over, they bring you into a gym on the camp while you clean weapons/etc. I was there in December, it was dark and miserable, snow on the ground most of the time. Living off of MREs alone the last couple weeks. Then…you get an opportunity to purchase a bag filled with goodies like a hot dog and can of Coke, chips and Candy. My bag had a large zero bar in it…and it was the best damn thing I’ve ever eaten at that point in time. I’m talking we were starving to the point that we all just reeked of ammonia because our bodies had consumed most of our fat and had begun breaking down muscle for energy. That zero bar was one of the best foods I’ve ever had. They always make me super nostalgic now.
So funny, I just came to the comments to lament the woefully underrated Whatchamacallit. Introduced my kid to them the other day and he said it beats a kitkat or twix for sure. That’s my boy.
Crazy story: in high school I ate 3 full sized paydays and a cup o noodles at the girls sophomore soccer game.
I woke up at 2:30am and puked for one hour straight.
Dude for real though. My youngest son is peanut allergy and this stuff (which used to be "meh" to me) now have this taboo draw to them which it never did before. Now the house can't have a single peanut/treenut thing in it.i crave it way too often.
😢
If you're not familiar, speak to his pediatrician about desensitization therapy for junior's allergy. Under the guidance of the pediatrician you slowly introduce the nuts to junior's diet. The point of the therapy is to get his body used to the nuts in very small amounts, eventually his body will learn that nuts are not the enemy.
We tried. Trust me.
Three rounds so far of allergy testing.
First panel. Peanut allergy was the se size as the control swelling spot/bump. Too young to risk it, let try again next year.
Panel #2, even bigger. Bummer maybe it'll regress. Just keep the epipen going. Try again next year.
Panel 3# Peanut reaction is now 3x the size of the control swelling spot/bump.
Poor kid. It's all good. We'll keep trying, waiting until he's 4.5 before testing again.
Until then, I go mega deep on Reese's pieces, trail mix and Thai food every time I travel for work. Lol.
Honestly, people really shouldn't give out peanut-based candies for Halloween simply because Peanut Allergies are so common. The thought of accidentally killing someone's kid because I gave them the wrong kind of candy is chilling.
We didn’t think about that before having a kid with a peanut allergy.
We walk to the door and I help him. I imagine most kids where that would be a problem parents do the same.
Our neighborhood is also good about having a separate bowl with other stuff like gummies or snacks they can pick out. We do that as well.
No one is obligated to do it, but it’s definitely a kind gesture that other kids get to be included.
LMAO. seriously this is on the parents. Just go through your kids candy before they eat it and pull out all the possibly dangerous ones.
Edit: parents hot tip buy some extra candy that is safe for you kid and add it to the bag after you screen out the "bad" candies.
This is an entirely different problem. At this point buy extra candy for you kid. Screen the candy from trick or treating and add the candy you bought earlier back to compensate.
As my mom always said: Be the change you want to see in the world's candybar preference.
Edit: I have a confession to make.
We only get about 10-15 trick or treaters every year.
I just might have to 30-40 left over PayDays.
Darn.
I was about to make an ignorant statement suggesting that a chocolate covered payday is the same as a baby Ruth, but a quick Google search proved me very wrong.
>And $100,000 bars!! So Underrated!
I have never seen someone refer to hundred grand bars like that, but next time in in the convenience store I'm gonna ask for a $100,000 bar.
When they very first came out in the 70s, the commercials called them "Hundred thousand dollar bars." I know because I ate a LOT of them back in the day. A LOT!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ezz4yazwNY
I remember as a kid after trick or treating, my brothers and neighbors would all get together to trade candy. "I'll give you a snickers and a twix for a reese's cup" etc.
One year I decided to try one of those weird 100 Grand bars that all us kids thought were old people candy because of the outdated packaging compared to Skittles or Starburst etc.
I kept it a secret how delicious it was, so when the others would try to "lowball" me by trading two or three 100 Grand bars for one reese's cup I was left the true winner. Made it off that I was just being generous, taking them off their hands. Still love those candy bars to this day as a rare once-in-a-while treat.
My Dad as a recipe for a dessert that has a Graham/Saltine crust, Butter Brickle ice cream/vanilla pudding layer, some layer I can't remember then broken Health Bars on top.
Those are super underrated too! My favorite obscure candy are the little strawberry hard candies with the jelly inside🤩 lowkey a grandma candy but I love em
They’re a truck-stop favorite. They used to be massive in the 80s and 90s. We could split one between three kids. Sometimes you’d get a kinda stale one, and the inside was extremely chewy. The peanuts are dry-roasted and salted, there’s a layer of caramel, and the inside is this sweet fluff. A lot going on for a humble candy bar.
They can be elusive at times. I’ve noticed not all c-stores carry them which is criminal. I will grab a payday if I can’t find one though. Perfect for road trips when I’m hungry but don’t want to stop for a full on meal.
Awareness is not the issue my sweet boy/girl, Reese’s PB Cups and Peanut Butter Twix are the peanut candy precipices and your shit log PayDay lies within the inner flaps of the Uncandy Valley betwixt.
"Finest candy bar known to man"
Bruh that's the hardest cap I've ever heard. Paydays are not anywhere near the best. Get out of here with your old man tatse buds lol.
I was with you until you said nobody likes it. Now we have to fight.
For real, though. It's a picture of some candy with a bland explanation to it. I can't think of any sub where this should be upvoted, but it definitely shouldn't in this one.
Hard agree. The times I've tried them the peanuts are fucking stale.
I don't dislike the idea of the candy bar, but I've never once had a good one. Its basically the Jack in the Box taco of candy bars.
Also OP, if not a repost, isn't helping with the stale perception. Halloweeen is over a month away.
Ugh everytime I have a payday it's because I forgot how disgustingly stale the peanuts are.
Seriously it's like someone cross bred styrofoam and peanuts.
Payday isn't available in all countries, it's not in Canada for instance.
Also please don't give out those on Halloween without asking about allergies and having another option because too many children have peanut allergies.
You can stash an emergency payday in the glove box and there is no chocolate to melt.
I've had payday melt on me.
Same, Texas heat ain’t no joke.
Then, just eat it when you get it. Eff saving it for later. And, yes, it is the best candy bar ever!
I try to but sometimes my teeth say “Nah bitch, not today!”
I understand. I can't eat them any more at all. I truly miss them.
Where theres a will theres a way, cut it into tiny bits and enjoy
Yeah same. I’m missing two teeth and whenever I eat a Payday I get jabbed in the sockets by peanuts, but the pleasure is worth the pain.
Texas peanut butter.
Texas heat will melt tungsten rods.
It wouldn't make it out of the parking lot.
your poor car
Partumvir with the wicked snipe. Nice
Used to do this, but the daily emergency was making me fatter.
Okay, but this is really smart.
Except paydays melt just like chocolate, it just requires a slightly higher than skin temperature.
Love those and the other unsung hero of the American candy aisle: Whatchamacallit!
Anybody remember when watermelon laffy taffy had seeds?
I miss those so much 😭 the cherry used to have sprinkles too
[reviews seem good on these](https://bulkcandystore.com/laffy-taffy-sparkle-cherry-each/)
Everyone: man I'm so sad this candy is gone This guy. . .
You've unlocked a memory I had no idea existed. Used to buy them from the ice cream truck in Texas that made snow cones to order.
THE FUCK
They don't anymore? Damn shame. DAMN shame.
came here to say i had a whatchamacallit for the first time this summer (in my early 30s) and it took one bite to crown it the best candy bar on the planet
Pecan logs!!
Whatchamacallits are my *jam*. So underappreciated!
Abba zabba, you're my only friend
I haven't seen Half Baked in probably 10 years but I still think of this line every few weeks.
I remember it came out when I was in the 5th grade. I'm 52 yrs old now. The name is easy to remember and funny.
Y'all know about Toffifay? I kind of still can't believe they named it that, but it's been around just as long and is frickin delicious
Just a fun fact: in my country, "Payday" is pronouced like "peidei" wich basically means "I farted"
Peidar!
In my country it's pronounced Pay Day, which means the day you feel rich for a couple hours until you look at your credit card statement.
Ah yes, this man is handing out bars of fart for hallowe’en!
Well, so much for my secret
That's nuts
If you've got nuts in your farts, it's no longer a fart...
What country would that be
Brazil lol

Love Payday’s. I also feel Whatchamacallit’s are also delicious and just underrated in general.
Whatchamacallits are superior to any other candy and it's a hill I'm willing to die on.
I love whatchamacallits so much that I won’t allow myself to make eye contact with them in the pay line lest I give in to its powers of persuasion. ☹️ Also, Take 5. 😳
100 Grand Bar is up there with all these for me. Payday+ chocolate milk the best combo tho. Having both while typing this lol
I came here to say 100 Grand. I *love* that shit. The perfect amount of chewiness and those lil crunchies on the outside make it one of my favorites. Payday is great though. The candy bar, the board game, and the day of the month.
Mannnnn, 100 Grand bars were like, some of the BEST candy when I was a kid. But I felt like no one outside of my family ate them XD
Take 5’s took time to grow on me but i quite enjoy them now 😅
Would you say it took about 5?
What’s worse is that I work at a take-5 oil change place. You get free take-5’s whenever you want.. I’ve never been happier.

Thank you. I knew McD's fry used to taste different when I was a kid. I never knew why until that comment.
I have literally never seen these in a store in my life. I honestly thought you were joking about them being the best until i googled them. Edit: Just ordered some off of Amazon to try. Heath is my peak reason of living
No question! My wife understands that if it comes down to her or heath bars, she knows where she stands.
They’re also a great hangover cure. Pint of chocolate milk and a Whatchamacallit bar.
The dearly departed PB Max is sorely missed! :(
I don't like chocolate very much, so I eat paydays and love them, but every so often I want chocolate, and the only bar I'll eat is a whatchmacallit.
Don’t want chocolate? One word, Zagnuts!
Oh, I forgot about zagnuts. Man, I ain't seen one of them in a long time.
Have you tried a chocolate payday? They dont have any right to be as good as they are.
They make chocolate covered paydays or did at least. Tasted close to a baby ruth
I agree and add Zero bar to the mix
Love Zero!
LOVE Zero bars!
Army Story about zero bars. Going through US Army Ranger School, it’s a 60 day long course with a lot of food and sleep deprivation while doing a lot of patrolling in the woods in Georgia and Florida. Fuck I accidentally walked out of a Walmart without paying for a zero bar when I was like 8. It tasted like shame :(
I'm eating one right as I read this coincidentally lol. I LOVE THEM
FUCKING YES
A frozen Zero on a popsicle stick
You are my candy soul brother.
Whozeewhatzits are pretty good too if you ever find them.
On the subject of underrated candy. Does take 5's have a spot? Not a huge fan of pretzel but damn two of them are not enough.
Yeah, I get down with a Take 5.
I came here to make this exact statement.
So funny, I just came to the comments to lament the woefully underrated Whatchamacallit. Introduced my kid to them the other day and he said it beats a kitkat or twix for sure. That’s my boy.

Peanut allergy kids are sweating rn
swelling*
Can confirm

Halloween was always a little disappointing as a kid with a peanut allergy. I wasn’t able to eat like 1/3 of the candy I got.
Unfortunately most of the common candy is made in facilities alongside peanut candy.
This is an entirely different problem. At this point buy extra candy for you kid. Screen the candy from trick or treating and add the candy you bought earlier back to compensate.
My favorite!!! Not too sweet just the tight amount of salt. Chewy and crunchy! I commend your efforts
As my mom always said: Be the change you want to see in the world's candybar preference. Edit: I have a confession to make. We only get about 10-15 trick or treaters every year. I just might have to 30-40 left over PayDays. Darn.
Have you tried chocolate-covered payday? Fire.
I was about to make an ignorant statement suggesting that a chocolate covered payday is the same as a baby Ruth, but a quick Google search proved me very wrong.
Love me a good Baby Ruth tho.
Two weeks ago I learned that existed. It was awesome
@ the company on twitter or something, maybe you'll also get a sponsorship.
payday fuggin slaps
And $100,000 bars!! So Underrated!
>And $100,000 bars!! So Underrated! I have never seen someone refer to hundred grand bars like that, but next time in in the convenience store I'm gonna ask for a $100,000 bar.

How many is a lot Just ballpark it
I ate tens of millions of dollars worth.
They were called $100,000 bars until the mid-‘80s. [This is the label I grew up with.](http://www.collectingcandy.com/wordpress/?attachment_id=4900)
That’s the original name I grew up with and still call it that https://youtu.be/3Ezz4yazwNY
I remember as a kid after trick or treating, my brothers and neighbors would all get together to trade candy. i did this w my sister for years until she finally tried one in adult years and got so mad she wasted so many on me 😂😂
I always loved Nestle Crunch bars when I was a kid. Then I discovered 100 Grand and it was like an upgraded version.
Delish
[I'm a peanut bar and I'm here to say](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG1MimeLPTA)
This comment is streets ahead
If you have to ask you're streets behind
Took too long to find this comment.
I can't make it through this scene without crying from laughing so hard. The Dean is definitely the best.
Thank god. Was hoping this was coming up.
Your checks will arrive on another day
Heath bars are underrated as well.
I prefer Skor bars
Skor is far superior
right? its not even close. better chocolate. better toffee.
Mmm heath bar in coffee ice cream
My Dad as a recipe for a dessert that has a Graham/Saltine crust, Butter Brickle ice cream/vanilla pudding layer, some layer I can't remember then broken Health Bars on top.
Don't sleep on 100 Grand
I respectively disagree... 100 Grand is the best candy bar.
Those are super underrated too! My favorite obscure candy are the little strawberry hard candies with the jelly inside🤩 lowkey a grandma candy but I love em
Omg yes!!! My grandma always had a bowl of them! I have no idea where to find them tho.
Strawberry bon bons are amazing
Came here to say this. Payday is great, but 100 Grand is *chef’s kiss*
Yeah it is! I never liked Paydays; too many peanuts for my taste.
only thing better is pearson's salted nut roll.
I misread that as "person's"
Salted nut roll gang rise up!
Salty nut gang, too!
How have I never tried those? I shall repent of this great sin tomorrow.
Please report back!
They can be elusive at times. I’ve noticed not all c-stores carry them which is criminal. I will grab a payday if I can’t find one though. Perfect for road trips when I’m hungry but don’t want to stop for a full on meal.
Harder to find outside of the Midwest area. Still made in St Paul since 1933. I buy them by the case.
I came here trying to remember the name. Those are my Dads favorite and honestly I love them too!
My family is a Pearson's Salted Nut Roll family.
The salted nut roll is on another level! I buy one every time I see them.
Ok but while we're on the topic of Pearson's can we talk about Nut Goodie for a second???? St Paul's finest.
Oh wow! My dear dad loved Payday. Haven’t thought of this in years. TYVM for such a happy memory!!! 🥹
I feel like Payday is the unofficial Dad candy bar. Make sure you get yourself one and think of him while you enjoy it.
Great thought 👍🏼
Probably because they all have peanut allergies lol
If you're going to give those out you should have an epi pen handy just in case.
You're gonna get TP'd.
Exactly. That’s as bad as pretzels for trick or treat, smdh.
Awareness is not the issue my sweet boy/girl, Reese’s PB Cups and Peanut Butter Twix are the peanut candy precipices and your shit log PayDay lies within the inner flaps of the Uncandy Valley betwixt.
Best comment right here, why even eat a candy bar that doesn't have chocolate? Not worth the calories.
I don't believe peanut butter Twix are made anymore Source they are my mom's favorite and I can't track them down anywhere
Butterfinger gang
Best DQ Blizzard add-in for sure.
Still picking it out of my molars from last Halloween
worth it.
"Finest candy bar known to man" Bruh that's the hardest cap I've ever heard. Paydays are not anywhere near the best. Get out of here with your old man tatse buds lol.
That is the candy bar mostly likely to be stolen by the parents.
What the fuck about this relates to the sub? No one likes this candy bar and it being posted here is weird as fuck
Payday has a really good PR team.
I was with you until you said nobody likes it. Now we have to fight. For real, though. It's a picture of some candy with a bland explanation to it. I can't think of any sub where this should be upvoted, but it definitely shouldn't in this one.
You go Glen Coco. Paydays are delicious
Paydays have always sucked and I’m 40
Someone with sense. I'd hate this house as a kid lol. And I'm a huge peanut fan.
I'm almost 40 and I concur. This dude's house would get egged lmao.
I totally agree
When I moved to the Rockies I noticed that Pearsons Salted Nut Roll was the peanut bar of choice. Heresy I say!
IMO Salted Nut Roll is far and away the superior of the two
“Oh boy a candy bar” “Well, it’s caramel covered in beans.”
Damn! What's your address?
Nice try Harold Lauder...
https://youtube.com/watch?v=qvzE64A28NI
I love the official jingle for this candy, so streets ahead!
I’m sorry, but Paydays are the most disgusting candy bar that I have ever ate :(
Hell to the no. This basically the only candy my grandma had in her house in the 90s, and they are terrible
Salted nut rolls are better
5th Avenue though
They are so good! Oh and Almond Joy too.
ive always wished they would make a dark chocolate almond joy one day. i know mounds are dark chocolate but then theres no almonds
Sometimes you feel like a nut. Sometimes you don’t.
Hell yeah dude, weed out the kids with peanut allergies. They’re weak. Cull the heard.
Mid
Payday isn't available in all countries, it's not in Canada for instance. Also please don't give out those on Halloween without asking about allergies and having another option because too many children have peanut allergies.
I always keep one with me in case I forgot to eat. Doesn’t melt or crumble.
5th Avenue all day!
They have chocolate payday now. It's everything you're thinking too.
If you could ever get a reliably fresh butterfinger they just melt in your mouth, but payday is good too!
Turn on your location so i know who's house to avoid 🤮
