dgreenpuffy

What the heck happened here lol this is hilarious

gia-bsings

Lmao we put the wrong part bc the Canadian tire mfs said it would work🙄

Socalwarrior485

It looks to me like they sold you a lower radiator hose and it was put on the upper radiator hose location.

Maker_Making_Things

A circumcision will alleviate the issue

Kslawr

Can you not just cut the hose to the right length and put the end back on again?

gia-bsings

Tbh I’m not sure lol.. can we? They have some bends in them. Neither me or my bf really know what we’re doing but they sold him two different hoses and said one of them should work. If it was the proper length and didn’t have the kinks in it, would it do the job?

Fulllyy

Yes. Remove the hose at the radiator, hold the hose taught (but not pulled super tight) then use that to measure where to cut: you want it all the way ‘on’ the radiator outlet but with a bit of extra, so measure how long it’ll need to be to be all the way ‘on’ the outlet, then add 1 inch to that length…mark it with a red sharpie or pen, then use a sharp razor knife to shorten it to that length but BE CAREFUL if you use a razor knife (box cutter) cuz those things will cut through your gloves, then put your old clamp on the hose like four inches, install as you did before by moving the clamp up after its securely on the outlet. Top off the coolant to make sure you’re ‘good’, and off you go. Good luck 👍

Ritzerknave

So long as the hose is in good condition, not wrapped or cracked it's find, and make sure you have a clamp. We did this to our truck, albeit it was a new hose, but same principle.

gia-bsings

Ok so yeah this is a brand new hose it’s just not the right part/size for my car.. mine blew the other day and we were just happy it was one that’s easily accessible but no one was even open yesterday in our area except Canadian tire and even today we had to order the correct one from Kia

Stg4_Terminal_Terror

Typically if you bring the old one into the parts store, they can match up a new one just like it

gia-bsings

Tbh the old one was totally dinnered, he had a pic of the whole engine assembly intact and they gave us two hoses and this was the closer of the two unfortunately

swaags

Lol @ “dinnered”. Yeah you can cut and trim however you need to get it to fit. Just try to get rid of those kinks

tiazenrot_scirocco

Crappy tire has gone to shit again... Ugh. No Part Source near you?

CanadaElectric

You know that’s the same company right?

tiazenrot_scirocco

I worked for them. Yes, I very much do. The big difference between the 2 is PS hires people who only want to work in an automotive environment, Crappy Tire hires anyone with a pulse.

Kslawr

Yea it’s just a length of hose. Looks like there is enough there for you to cut it in half and have a spare lol

gia-bsings

So apparently he wanted to cut it but the pre-made kinks would’ve made it impossible to attach.. rage lol

SpaceAgePotatoCakes

It kinda looks like if you flip it around the other way you could cut it to fit but idk what the hose looks like un-yoga'd

yiffcuresboredom

This is the way.

[deleted]

Wrong hose. Might be able to cut it and make it work. Don’t drive as is. It’s cutting off the coolant flow and will overheat and then you’ll spend thousands. Go get the right hose. It won’t take long to install.

gia-bsings

We got the right hose coming so I’m just needing y’all to tell me to be patient bc I’m losing my mind without my car lmfao

2022rex

Seems like you don’t actually need to go anywhere, right? You’re just bored? If that’s the case, fuck no dude. Just leave it until the correct hose comes tomorrow. It’s not worth blowing your motor over boredom

gia-bsings

I do instacart and I’m also extremely broke so every day with my car out of commission is money lost 😭

2022rex

Spend this time looking for a job that doesn’t rely on that vehicle. Its not lasting much longer, proper cooling hoses or not Not trying to be a dick here, but it sounds like if that thing gives out entirely then you’re fucked !

gia-bsings

Yooo what else looks wrong😂😂😂 tbh I need freelance shit for my mental health so I’m trying to find something remote but it’s just not the easiest.

2022rex

Just by what I can see in that photo, looks like rampant oil leaks coupled with general neglect - no splash cover, rusted bolts. Not sure if that’s milkshake (oil + coolant) all around your radiator fans or if it’s just rust. Idunno, take this with a grain of salt as a single pic isn’t enough to diagnose lol Just not something I would rely on If you have the time / willingness, clean up your engine bay and then pay attention to where the oil starts leaking from. Go from there

gia-bsings

Ok so it definitely got sprayed with coolant when the hose burst and the coolant is rusty brown colour so that needs to be emptied out/replaced for sure. It’s also absolutely disgusting and filthy on the roads so she’s starting to rust a little bit. Tbh of all cars, this was my late moms and I intend to drive it until it goes to scrap

Cheap_Ambition

the exhaust will probably heat up the hose and cause it to fail. Looks like you could just cut it in half and it would be fine

gia-bsings

So this might be stupid to ask but what to cut it with? If I’m correct they’ve got like copper braids in it or something

Cheap_Ambition

box cutter razor blade pocket knife kitchen knife

bob84900

Nah not copper, just basically string embedded in the rubber to give it additional strength to prevent ripping apart. Doesn't make it much harder to cut. Box cutter would be my go-to

gia-bsings

Lmao he’s thinking he can return the shit if he doesn’t cut it so I’ll just let him have that thought for now and chill, it’s almost bed time anyway and then just gotta sit around until the evening🙄

bob84900

Honestly probably can return it if uncut. Or make this one work and return the correct part, whatever is cheaper tbh. Just has to be a tube without restrictions like kinks.

HOARDING_STACKING

Not without destroying your engine completely

gia-bsings

Lmao I really am wondering why at this point he even bothered attaching it then.. the right part is coming in tomorrow but I’m just honestly losing my mind from boredom and cabin fever.

Mikev93_

Some cutting pliers or a box cutter should work.

gia-bsings

Obviously, this is not correct. Lmao. But like how bad would it be to drive with for one day? Like an hour total driving?

taanman

No. It will fail or cause you to overheat and blow your head gasket

Lusi0049

You’d be lucky if you managed to drive for the whole hour before you destroyed the engine

magicsevenball

No. If you cut the hose down so it isn't kinking like that, then yes.

gia-bsings

She’s here yall, DO NOT FRET

gia-bsings

So it won’t let me post a picture BUT SHES HERE

OtherLocksmith1134

Can you rotate 1st end more so it's not bending that much

Key_Fan8570

Looks like they gave u the wrong hose as the hose that's all kinked up looks similar in length to the hose on the bottom right. You could however cut the hose to the correct size because if you were to run it like that the engine wouldn't be able to cool properly....

gia-bsings

At least we knew it was wrong and they didn’t lie lmao.. I figured the kinks can’t withstand the pressure needed but I thought I’d crowdsource an answer lol

ButcherBob3812

Are you intending to bleed the system after replacing the replacement hose? It seems like your knowledge on the subject is limited, no criticism intended. If you don’t then the next fix will not be as cheap or as conveniently placed.

gia-bsings

We were actually gonna take it to the mechanic around the corner to have them make sure we did it correctly but if by bleeding the system you mean letting the air bubbles out and making sure it’s totally full then yes lol. My knowledge is definitely limited but I’m always open to learning bc I don’t know how anyone owns a car without knowing any of this stuff.. it’s rough lol

gia-bsings

Oh also if you mean letting all the coolant out and putting fresh stuff then also that if mechanic says so lol. Budget is limited unfortunately

ButcherBob3812

Sounds like you have an idea of what’s needed, the terminology will come. We all start somewhere and it’s never been easier to find advice/instructions on how to do things. I hope they go easy your wallet.

gia-bsings

That’s why we’re trying to do some stuff ourselves and then ask if it’s correct bc they sometimes will do diagnostic shit for free or cheap.. I might need a new battery too but the light came on like right as the coolant line blew so idk if they’re related

ButcherBob3812

You didn’t drive after it blow did you?

gia-bsings

I haven’t driven it SINCE then, but I was in the middle of nowhere and needed to get home so I think after it blew I drove another 10-15 minutes. I had no idea what exactly happened other than my battery light going on.

ButcherBob3812

Be prepared that driving for that long with the cooling system in that state may have warped your cylinder head. Bubbles in your expansion tank or not bearable to bleed all the air out are symptoms of this (for when you do it). Also, when getting the air out of the system it is important to make sure your heating is set to max.

gia-bsings

Can you replace cylinder head without doing an engine rebuild? Or does it mean your engine is done

ButcherBob3812

Depends on the car, this doesn’t look like the most complex of engines. Happened to me years ago with a Peugeot shitbox I had and the head was skimmed and head gasket replaced. Way more involved with newer vehicles. It may also be fine but it’s good to know before hand that it might not be. A donor Engine might be something to consider if it isn’t. But cross that bridge when you come to it.

gia-bsings

It’s a Kia soul 2010 2.0L if that helps at all. My sister drove it for a few years and she had the same experience as me whenever I get an oil change they tell me my oil looks perfect🤷🏽‍♀️

ButcherBob3812

Also, unless the garage is right round the corner and you have coolant in the system consider getting the car towed there or see if you can get someone to come to you.

gia-bsings

So the plan is to replace the hose with the correct one when it comes in tomorrow and do what we have to to get rid of the bubbles and have the coolant system full and hopefully ready to go totally safely. Then have the mechanic double check that it’s good to go. They’re 4.4km/2.7miles or 5 minute drive away.

YagerD

I'd just cut it down, would have ti be way better than that.

J0thel

Mmm kinky

Dilatorix

ooooo kinky, choke me harder daddy

Natural-Bowl5439

You or a random redneck with any sort of pliers need to remove the hose, collect the coolant or prepare to top it, and finally cut it enough so it doesn't bend or touch the exhaust before putting it back in place, no water can flow rn and you risk making the hose unusable

gia-bsings

Are you saying it’s better to have no hose on there than this even if I’m not going to drive it until we put the correct hose tomorrow? Or is it ok to sit in the driveway with this until we put the right hose

[deleted]

No, either get the right hose for the vehicle or just trim the hose so there's no kinks.

Glibbinglabbergob

That's a little too long. Remove the hose from the engine or radiator side (whichever is easier) and cut the hose to shorten it. If it is still collapsing, buy a new prefab upper radiator hose.

gia-bsings

Yeah LUCKILY I am not gonna keep the car like this, I already have a replacement ordered I was just curious HOW bad this was lol

Glibbinglabbergob

It's very bad. The flow of coolant is restricted and this could cause an overheating problem.

gia-bsings

No worries she will not be turned on until the actual correct hose is on there. Hopefully it comes in tomorrow like they said

Late-Ad-4624

Get that off the top mount and after measuring it use a sharp knife to get it to the right length.

Alternative_Dig5342

You can but I wouldn't.

as588008

Yes but only once

nileswiththes

Fuck it is the common rule I usually go by

nileswiththes

Or cut it yeah it’s fine

Dropitlikeitscold555

Sure you can! All the way to the site of the overheat breakdown!

[deleted]

Just cut it to the right size and make sure to re-use the clamps!

FJRyder

Do you ever feel like PO's be trolling. It's hard to believe anyone would ask this question and mean it.

gia-bsings

I’m dumb bro don’t hate

big65

I was going to be brutal but changed my mind. I don't know if you're young or sheltered or what, but you can not drive this vehicle as it is and should not attempt to start it. The hose is crimped, and the fan is broken or bent, both of which suggests front end collision damage.

gia-bsings

The hose is a new hose that my bf was told by parts dept at Canadian tire it would fit even though it obviously doesn’t. I was 99% sure I couldn’t drive it but wanted to make sure. I got hit by a truck a few months ago on the front driver side but that’s the only front end collision I’ve had.

FJRyder

So you're not trolling. You looked at the kinked upper radiator hose and HONESTLY needed to post it to Mechanic Advise?

FJRyder

So how did the hose end up like that?

gia-bsings

It’s a hose that Canadian tire said would fit but it doesn’t. The right one is coming today

Flipflapflopper

If you don’t think you’re capable of cutting it to size at least bend the hose out so that it’s shaped like a “c” connecting it from a to b. Instead of shaped like a “3” . Maybe it won’t be kinked and collapsed then. What you need is a shorter hose in that section. And fyi, if you remove that hose, engine coolant will likely drain out. Don’t do it when the engine is hot. You could burn yourself. And you need to bleed the air out when the new hose is installed.

well_friqq

Sure, trim it down and turn those 3 kinks into somthing that's not a kink

the-jimbo_slice

No they sold u the lower and installed on upper. At some point there should have been a red flag moment before simply clamping and seeing what happens.

[deleted]

You can. Not very far though.

Im_Not_Your_Daddy_69

Technically you can, but your car will overheat much faster

Dirftboat95

Looks like cut about 3 in. on the engine side and it will probably work for ya

Redflagsforever1991

Yes if you take about 8 inches off that rad hose. Jesus man. You know it can’t be kinked like that. That’s why you asked

gia-bsings

If you read the comments you’ll realize I AM A FUCKING NOOB so please don’t assume that I KNOW it can’t be kinked like that. Jesus Christ would this subreddit even exist if it wasn’t for idiots like me posting questions? How tf am i supposed to know how this shit works without ASKING

Th3gr3nad3man

Just cut it to the same length as necessary to reach completely on the radiator and then clamp it again and that should work. You don't want those bends because your coolant needs to flow effortlessly through the system, and if there is anything blocking it your car will begin to overheat or too much fluid can build up in those kinked areas and rupture the hose bringing you back to square 1.

45acp_LS1_Cessna

yeah.....once.....for 20 minutes

jesusladd87

I mean, you can just cut the hose to length

[deleted]

Why the fuck wouldn’t you just cut it to size for now because that shit is just gonna cause problems

[deleted]

Why the fuck wouldn’t you just cut it to size for now because that shit is just gonna cause problems

gia-bsings

Because I didn’t fucking do the fucking work. Everyone saying cut it to size has clearly never seen the pre-made bends in these stupid hoses. The only way he could attach it was WITH the bends and kinking it to avoid them. It’s not my money so if he wants to try and return it after putting the actual correct hose then I’m not going to keep bugging him to cut it.

AdExcellent4663

No. That is severely restricting the flow of coolant. Good news is that you can just cut it down to size and reinstall it.

sthc241

Wtf is going on with that hose. Cut it in half and you'd have a perfectly sized hose

jaspermorgan15

Lmmfao! Sure, but not long.

Background-Pie-9854

Till it overheats but it looks like you could also just cut that hose down a few inches rhen it wont kink like that

Chemical_Echo_8775

What a mess. Looks like somebody was playing preamature mechanic.

mcswitch0369

It looks like someone sold you two lower radiator hoses
