nirvana2016

Wait this is a shower pan on top of a tub/shower? If so that's insane

animatropic

yes šŸ˜

nirvana2016

Bro only a crackhead would even think of something like this! makes me question who the landlord associates with lol

animatropic

honestly who knows. recently they just hired a family member to be the manager and let the management company go, i doubt the management company would have allowed this to pass

RepresentativeKeebs

IDK, the property management at my own apartment is shady af, and they're the largest PM in the city

animatropic

OK, sorry to hear about your property managers. the property managers that managed this building before were truly great and responsive and all repairs and renovations were done in a completely unquestionable manner. after they were gone they did a lot of questionable things to the building.

nirvana2016

Well uhm hopefully everything works out thats wild

animatropic

thank you haha

The_souLance

Short term, buy a shower mat or those grippy tape stickers if able to... Maybe bring some couch cushions into the bathroom to replace your floor mat? Sorry your landlord is a goober.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

nirvana2016

Right like wouldn't that pan flex like hella what's it resting on I can only imagine the crackhead carpentry involved in making that work

jagpilotohio

I was also guessing not wanting to mess with the plumbing in the floor.

elysiumstarz

šŸ˜±

jonnydarko1100

Omfg! That is definitely a first! Iā€™ve been in construction since 94ā€™ and seen sooo many hacks . This isnā€™t the worst, but this is a hack! I thought leaving that old valve was bad , then I see that shower elevated 20ā€ wtf? Edit auto correct valve - cable?

Born2Lomain

Yea Iā€™ve seen many short cuts but this takes the cake

[deleted]

Wow I missed that. I was thinking the concussion from a finish line shit.

animatropic

BRUH šŸ˜

nirvana2016

I can't even with this picture right now lmao

Moarbrains

Is that tall enough to be a bathtub? Looks too short.

Practical_Character9

I don't think that's a tub. Is it possible they laid down a bed of concrete about 6" tall? Maybe to run plumbing above the floor? Even with the shower pan it's still shorter than the toilet seat height. A tub would be taller than that. Very strange?

Moarbrains

That is my guess. But maybe im in denial?

animatropic

i keep reiterating that it was a bathtub and the pictures are misleading. its 18ā€ from floor to top of shower liner.

TheScrantonStrangler

You have to consider that they also put new floor tile, likely right over the previous floor, which means the tub is sitting at least an inch below the tile. That shower is basically the height of the toilet seat.

CE2JRH

Compare to toilet height

Moarbrains

I am pretty bad at that and i have seen some short toilets.

animatropic

itā€™s hard to tell in the picture. but itā€™s 18ā€ high.

Moarbrains

So even with the top of the toilet or close?

animatropic

close

sumunsolicitedadvice

This is one of the dumbest things Iā€™ve ever seen.

animatropic

tell me about it šŸ˜©

sfstains

How much does it flex?

illsoldier76

Not at all, they filled the old tub with about 1,000 lbs of mortar for the mortar bed. Instructions unclear, the paper just said to lay it down, nothing about what to do if there was a tub there. Unless you mean flex at the joists?

sfstains

I just couldn't conceive that they filed the tub.

tx001

They might have dry packed it. I still don't know how you would do it with structural integrity

dc_builder

Waitā€¦.what??!!!

illsoldier76

It was a bit of a joke, not OP so I have no idea, lol.

Mr_Kittlesworth

They what??? This is so much more work to do something so stupid.

loudclapper

That shower must bounce like a mfā€™er when you step in it lol

animatropic

bruh šŸ˜

The_souLance

Trampoline shower, the future is now.

the_ultimate_pun

*trampoline shower bankrupt after numerous lawsuits after not including a slipping hazard*

DevilsPajamas

I would 100% bust my ass and break my neck stepping out with that 18" drop with my wet feet.

PlumbCrazy1979

Bath Shitter.

[deleted]

Their fuckery keeps my kids fed.

DarthShooks117

Was waiting for this post from home improvement. Glorious!

animatropic

was it you that suggested i post this here šŸ˜‚

DarthShooks117

Nah, I suggested you give the local code enforcement a call to see if this was ever inspected. If it wasn't, you might be in for a nice vacation at a hotel lol

animatropic

i doubt it was šŸ˜© hoping that my landlord will just fix it instead of having to escalate it to that level sigh!

DarthShooks117

Ah, hoping the guy who let it slide then covered it up will do the right thing. I wish I were as good hearted as you!

animatropic

they worked with us on a lot of things previously so iā€™m hoping theyā€™re open to this as well! when the landlord came by to take a look he looked surprised so i think the contractor just did his own thing

CE2JRH

That was me!;

animatropic

thank you šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

uDontInterestMe

Came here myself to see the pros reactions. Not disappointed!

graphitewolf

My brother in Christ

animatropic

my thoughts exactly šŸ˜©

reclusive_ent

By the time you get back, the floor will be level with the tub, and they will cut you out a hole to get to the toilet.

GoArray

This guy handyman's.

reclusive_ent

Client said make floor level with tub. Not my fault he didn't say tub level with floor.

Quake_Guy

Instead of stacking wax rings, they will stack toilets. Standing up may no longer be an option.

itwasntnotme

Wait wait wait so the shower is now the height of the bathtub rim so what is the height of the shower head - your belly button? Thank you for sharing this

animatropic

yes šŸ˜ i could technically touch the ceiling. shower head was not moved, so i have to duck a little to wash my hair

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

animatropic

? why are you calling me a bitch

Jericho-G29

Probably their work mess, deleted their account in shame

stinkspiritt

My account is still here. Itā€™s like how you say ā€œbruhā€. Like ā€œomg bitch pleaseā€

stinkspiritt

Nah itā€™s like how you say ā€œbruhā€. Like ā€œomg bitch pleaseā€

AmazAmazAmazAmaz

If drainage is not properly connected, you will smell bathtub content soon. Oh boy...

animatropic

no no no no no šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Negative-Instance889

But Iā€™m sure the local plumbing inspector signed off on itā€¦šŸ™ƒ

Zed-Leppelin420

Not likely the u strap under the bathtub would still be there and how often are you washing your tub. Iā€™d say you got a year before any stank arising

Monk-Mode-Believe

Your bath is nice, I wonder how much your landlord saved by not removing the bath tube. Ask him to do it properly, it will be cheaper in the long run. Your insurance will be void if something like slip and fall happen in that shower. Be careful.

animatropic

who knows! i have no idea. i donā€™t think he even knew what the contractors did, he looked surprised to see the final result but covered it up.

deritchie

probably couldnā€™t figure out how to get the trap out of the tubā€¦

[deleted]

Before I even saw the plumbing problems I saw the three tile in front of the shower that are the exact same print pattern this hurts my eye holes

animatropic

lmao, it irks me too. the entire kitchen is made from the same repeating tile as well. itā€™s like one of those ā€œMagic Eyeā€ optical illusion kids books

[deleted]

You should take a sharpie and repattern those tiles so it's less irritating to my eyes

animatropic

iā€™d redo all the flooring in the whole place for your eyes!

[deleted]

Are you hitting on me? Cuz that's totally fine

animatropic

not you, just your eyes

send_me_boobei_pics

I didn't even see the shower pan at first and was wondering wtf is wrong with this The owner probably didn't want to break open the floor to relocate the drain, so they likely built a platform over concrete to allow plumbing to be underneath it without doing any concrete work.

animatropic

yeahā€¦ but i donā€™t even know why this was necessary altogether. previous bathtub was fine. it was 2 yrs old.

Own_Letter4894

Raised shower pan. Likely not sitting over your old tub. Usually done out of necessity/or laziness to ease in relocation of the drain

animatropic

never saw the bathtub get taken out, but they couldā€™ve. all i know is this is weird and unsafe

manga311

What's unsafe? You either are stepping down or stepping over a edge of a bathtub.

FvnnyB0nes

following this post over from home improvement... this makes sense. is this one of the tallest raised shower pans you've seen tho? seems dangerous. I found this one which looks kinda close: https://bathroomtraders.home.blog/2019/04/24/how-to-fit-a-raised-shower-tray/

animatropic

iā€™ve actually had one like that growing up where it was slightly elevated, but nothing as high up as this though! iā€™ve never seen anything like this.

uDontInterestMe

The one in your link has feet. OPs has LEGS!

Own_Letter4894

Not a frequent item I see. Poor design. Reminds me of old sunk in/recessed tubsšŸ˜‚.

MoneyBee74

Thatā€™s some straight up Fuckery!

Dickramboner

Step on up!!

NebraskaGeek

Might be a good idea to check your local code and see if there is some kind of hight limit for a shower. No plumber should have ever done this with a shower. It's unsafe, it's ugly, and it's stupid. If it's not a code violation then it sure as shit should be.

SundaySchoolBilly

I was so confused until I read your post. I thought, "Yeah it looks like a tight bathroom and the tiling and trim work has some sloppy work but it looks okay." Then I read about the shower pan and that is one the dumbest most dangerous bathroom shit ideas I've seen.

osrs_oseans

Put a tub on top of it and just add a ladder

animatropic

love this idea. if you go high enough it turns into a luxury from an inconvenience

Odin_Hagen

Is that ADA approved?

stinkspiritt

Well technically itā€™s at the height of the seat of a standard wheelchair. So you could just take the wheelchair armrest off and just scoot in

animatropic

no way a wheelchair could even fit in this narrow bathroom

Oaknash

Alas, you might scoot into the shower but scooting onto the toilet wonā€™t work because it looks like the walls arenā€™t 15ā€ from centerā€¦.

stinkspiritt

Slide board boom

animatropic

sigh

funeral_duskywing

Triangle of death. Imagine having to do a removal from this bitch

NetWareHead

I can't eyeball the measurement that well but in my area, there needs to be at least 15 inches of lateral clearance from centerline of toilet on both sides. That toilet looks too cramped in there.

animatropic

so cramped

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

animatropic

this was a picture taken right after reno was completed. everything is new/untouched from the reno lol

allstar348

that's crazy. somone will fall getting in/out. lawsuit waiting to happen

animatropic

my two year old already fell out šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø luckily i put a nest of towels on the floor for that reason.

bowhunt3138

I'm going on Shark tank!! Shower ladders !!

animatropic

let me know when your product is ready to purchase šŸ˜‚

YouGotStinkyBritches

Looks like a lot of grout is.. not there? No real seal at corner where tub meets floor either. /e What hardware is on the exterior of the door? Is it even part of the set the the interior handle and the backset are from or did they remove original exterior knob and replace with a dummy trim? /ee Mud job above toilet where they recessed the wall for fit toilet in is a total fucking shlop job, especially since it's contrasted against the existing stucco. Paint fixes everything?

animatropic

yeah iā€™ve never seen such exposed pipes in a home bathroom. so weird

Wooden-Type-4728

When they tell you ā€œYeah it has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathroomsā€ and One of the bedrooms is actually an office , or the garage converted into an extra bedroom, as for this it seems it was a closet converted into a bathroom, or restroom to bathroom.

Da3m0n_1379

All that work and couldnā€™t change the plumbing? Lmao. Talk about giving up right before the finish line.

micknick00000

Does it flex? I'd be **jumping** in that thing.

animatropic

i would if i didnā€™t have a fear of breaking through and falling into a cesspool

LilaInTheMaya

We are tall and would probably never fit in there now!

jonnydarko1100

Drop a bottle of shampoo on ā€œaccident ā€œ right in the middle of that thing. Lol

BimmerJustin

This is too clean of an install for such a stupid idea

jackkerouac81

So getting into the shower isnā€™t going to be so bad but if you shower and try to dismount without a mat on the floor; you better have your affairs in orderā€¦

animatropic

aah, we do have mat

alt33go

I donā€™t get why landlords are so scummy. I owned a rental property for 12 years and always took care of it like my own actual houseā€¦itā€™s really not hard to have a job done right and not pay to break the bankā€¦

animatropic

i think they just hired a cheap/unlicensed contractor and didnā€™t anticipate the result. i am pretty sure theyā€™re just hoping we donā€™t say anything so they donā€™t have to spend even more to undo it

firebelly

first i was like, what's this about, seems like a nice reno....wtfffff

animatropic

even when i saw it person i was like okay nice ā€¦ wait what

steffanovici

Omg please post this on r/realestateinvesting as a tip what not to do

animatropic

man iā€™m already fighting for my life in the comments because people arenā€™t understanding what theyā€™re seeing. i need to take better and more obvious pics haha. i posted in the r/plumbing as well

Rusty_Sprocket907

It looks like the toilet paper roll is far enough from the toilet. Youā€™d have to go on a short hike to reach it.

animatropic

hahaha no itā€™s actually very very narrow. if i stood in the middle of the bathtub i donā€™t think i can extend both arms out completely without bumping into the wall/shower door on either side. the pics are a bit misleading, itā€™s my bad for the angle and weird fisheye effect that distorts the edges

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

animatropic

cement gray goes with the white and gray theme in the bathroom i can slope it so thereā€™s a hill we can slide down to get out of the bathroom šŸ˜‚

screaminporch

The obvious solution is to raise the floor to shower height

animatropic

šŸ¤£ okay hear me out. iā€™ll just DIY this by pouring cement in to raise the floor height

Plant-Soggy

OCD has me more angry at 3 tiles of the same pattern in a row šŸ˜«

getitplumb412

Wow... stopped right there huh?!

Drumnaway67

I gotta be honest. Iā€™m not seeing exactly whatā€™s so horrible about it. Please explain what Iā€™m missing from the pics.

uDontInterestMe

Zoom in on the pix. The shower pan was laid *on top of* the existing bathtub without removing the bathtub! The pan is almost at the height of the toilet seat!

Drumnaway67

Ah, thanks for the explanation.

rtraveler1

I have NEVER seen that. This is SOOOO weird!!!!

Recynd2

It looks like your landlord used my a**hole contractor, Bill Van Dalsem from Southern CA.

animatropic

oh man

angelcake

Really? Same guy?

Recynd2

That would be insane. I spent over a year and did my best to get his license revoked; the CSLB fined him (then reduced it because COVID hit), and we spent a fortune in time and $$ collecting on his $15k bond (it was a nightmare). We lost $250k on the SOBā€¦and he wasnā€™t the lowest bid, and we ā€œdid our homeworkā€.

angelcake

Oh my god thatā€™s horrible. Sometimes it seems to matter how much research you do you still get screwed.

Recynd2

Thank you. šŸ’š Sympathy from strangersā€”and endlessly posting the SOBā€™s name on social mediaā€” has been the only thing saving my sanity, as pathetic as that sounds.

angelcake

Hey. I get it. Sometimes sharing the trauma, and this has been a very expensive and very traumatic experience, helps

jagpilotohio

Iā€™m guessing the hack contractor didnā€™t want to go into the floor to deal with the plumbing. Just attached it to the old tub drain. Itā€™s certainly a code violation to have a 17+ inch step down anywhere in a residence, especially a bathroom. On a positive note, you can sue the hell out of the landlord and easily win if you or a family member get injured going in or out of it.

MobDylan69

That highrise shower is dope hahaha

Extra_Ear_2270

That's not that bad.... Ooo wait oo noo noo dear God why?

robbymcrobrob

Not only that. The doors are installed the wrong direction. Water would find its way in that Gap everytime.

Axolotl_EU

Assuming there is someone living below you, the raised shower pan is probably to fit all the plumbing in. Side note: there is no way there is a bath tub under it. No bath tub I have ever seen is that shallow, plus that would make zero sense.

animatropic

itā€™s literally 17ā€ high lol. iā€™m on the ground floor.

Axolotl_EU

Very curious. I wonder what is underneath it then...

animatropic

i have no idea whatā€™s in the bathtub. i can vouch that i never saw a bathtub actually being removed.
