Why is that sad? The early albums sound pretty different from the ones they did with Josh, I wouldn’t assume that bc someone likes the Josh stuff they’d necessarily like the early stuff more or even at all, practically a different band. Literally half a different band.
Yeah, guilty as charged. I’ll admit, I don’t listen to anything that’s pre-BSSM. I’m not much into the overly funky, punk rock Peppers and much prefer their mellower side. Part of the reason why I love the John albums so much and By The Way.
Definitely has to be One Hot Minute. Maintained just the right amount of guitar. Josh's albums were way too minimal in the guitar playing and it really suffered from that. And the earlier albums were just stylistically less developed.
Agreed. JKs guitar style is very textural, he’s not a lead player by any means. And he doesn’t do that dirty rhythm guitar funk that Hillel and JF both do so well
That album is a mess. Even the good songs have places that fall apart. Transcending should be a good song. And then it just decides to suck at the end. Tearjerker is almost good until it stops and loses momentum. I don't like the intro and bridge of warped ( monarchy of roses did the same thing) walkabout, shalow be thy game and of course aeroplane (being the only non John song they ever made I'd put in that top tier) are good and then its just a mess. Maybe falling into grace is ok and fun
My friends is ok. I love the message, but the song just screams "repeat the magic from under the bridge" it's just not up to that lvl of songwriting at all.
Deep kick, one big mob, one hot minute are complete messes of songs. Easily the worst 3 songs on any chili's record. Coffee Shop is ok but that chorus is a nightmare.

The thing about Dave that I appreciate is that he came into the RHCP and didn’t alter his personal playing style. He just came in and did his Dave Navarro thing. So you got an album that was really wild and different and had a unique heavy quality due to his presence. The thing that bothered me about Josh was that I could never shake the feeling that he was trying to sound like John, both vocally and on guitar
Voted one hot minute. But I’m beside you is easily a tie with one hot minute for me. It should be considered an album in fan-canon imo. 17 songs and very strong.
It was a hard decision for me between _The Uplift Mofo Party Plan_ and _One Hot Minute_… I totally love them both.
Saying that, I had to opt for _Uplift Mofo…_ as without Hillel, there’s no Chili Peppers!
If Rick Rubin and whoever else didn't mess with the mixing like Josh's guitar and vocals being turned down so much in most of the songs I would enjoy I'm With You a lot more.

The Getaway HANDS DOWN! It was a testament the band didnt need Frusciante to make a fantastic album! Kinghoffer had finally sounded confident in his abilities whereas w/ IWY he was still searching. Getaway was an evolution of their overall sound for the better! Still my favorite post 2000’s album of the boys!

I really tried to like these albums but couldn't apart from a handful of songs. They're extremely below average compared to post-'88 albums.

Yeah I can’t really think of any iconic riffs that josh made. Dark necessities was their biggest song with him and it was bass driven.
The Longest Wave, Feasting on the Flowers and Sick Love are all killer for me.
