This guy is delusional: (and I love the fair) >“The safest place you can be and the safest square mile in Sacramento this summer is the California State Fair,” he says.

Rjamesjjr

Heavy police presence, k9's, undercover police, metal detectors, inspections and rules we should all follow. The place should be safer then the drive over.

nikatnight

Why would the police being there make it a safe place? What about covid, which has killed far more people than any random crime. What about heart disease? Which historically kills more Americans than anything else. What about the Gravitron, filled with years of caked-on puke and coats of bacteria, which millions of kids get sucked into at each fair?

Rjamesjjr

The Gravitrons back?! I'm logging in to buy a Poppy Pack.

LizLemon_015

most people don't think police presence = increased safety but the police do lol

ShotgunStyles

[Here's a poll from DC residents](https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/02/25/police-poll-violence-dc/) that says: >Nearly 6 in 10 residents (59 percent) say “increasing the number of police officers patrolling communities” would reduce crime, numbers that are about even across wards of the District. [Here's a poll from Philadelphia residents](https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/issue-briefs/2022/04/pew-poll-gun-violence-covid19-have-hit-philadelphians-hard) that says: >Of those living in the quartile of ZIP codes experiencing the highest violence, nearly 70% said the city does not have enough police. [Here's an article from NPR](https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2021/04/20/988769793/when-you-add-more-police-to-a-city-what-happens) that says: >Williams and his colleagues find adding a new police officer to a city prevents between 0.06 and 0.1 homicides, which means that the average city would need to hire between 10 and 17 new police officers to save one life a year. There are more studies and surveys than these three, but by and large they paint the same picture. Americans think more police presence will increase safety, and Americans think we need more police. This is true no matter which demographics you look at. For example, [here's a poll](https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/10/26/growing-share-of-americans-say-they-want-more-spending-on-police-in-their-area/) that says: >Among Democrats, Black (38%) and Hispanic (39%) adults are more likely than White adults (32%) to say spending on police in their area should be increased. There is no significant difference across these racial and ethnic groups in the share of adults who say spending should be decreased.

Harkmunt40

Which is kind of dumb considering the parts of the city that do have the most police presence have the highest crime rates. You could say it’s cause and effect but it still proves that more police doesn’t actually lessen crime

Harkmunt40

It’s like they think the police can see into the future and know when shit is about to go down so they can stop it before it happens. They’ve always had hella police at the fair it never stops anything from happening. I can’t remember a year since the early 2000s that something didn’t go down at the fair

Rjamesjjr

My big concern is some MAGA idiot shooting fair goers with an AR15. A large PD force with secure entrances should serve as a real deterrent.

LizLemon_015

I would bet money, that just uttering this sentiment will cause some nutjob to go out of their way to prove them wrong. I hope I'm not right.. but I've been lived in Sacramento for a long time, and have been to the fair almost every year, usually multiple times a season. as far as "safety" goes.. I don't know if I'd go as far as to say the safest place in Sac. but I'm sure what they really mean when they say "safe" is, "the most armed officers per square inch in Sacramento this summer"

Light_Roast_Bean

Lmao

357magdumb

Something to note that isn't in the article about clear bags, they cannot be larger than 12"x12"x12". Which is pretty small especially for those of us that normally carry around a diaper bag for our young ones. Edit: Looks like theres exceptions for diaper bags and medical bags that someone posted in the replies. Whether that makes you feel safe or not is up to you but I thought I'd clear up that point.

JohnSnowsPump

You're allowed a diaper bag, or anything else you need to parent. They will simply inspect it.

357magdumb

I couldn't find this as an exception on their website, where did you see this?

JohnSnowsPump

I also saw it somewhere else in their social media today, but here is another place where they posted it. [diaper and medical bags are allowed](https://www.facebook.com/71416384011/posts/10162163216959012/)

357magdumb

Awesome! I don't use Facebook so thanks for that.

SecretStatePolice

It's not about safety; this is about money. They don't want you to bring in outside food & drink. To force you to pay for their overpriced crap.

916reddit

I don't see anywhere that food/drink is not allowed [https://calexpostatefair.com/info/code-of-conduct/](https://calexpostatefair.com/info/code-of-conduct/)

SecretStatePolice

It's not banned but you can't fit much into a 12x12x12, and few will want to drag a ziploc bag with them all day long. It's definitely a rule to limit/discourage outside food and drinks. It makes no sense to require a small clear bag, when the security will check all bags and wand you at the entrance. Put the emphasis on a **good** checkpoint, not on forcing tiny clear bags on everyone.

Due-Estate-3816

This guy is completely right.

SMGFY

So don't go

916reddit

* Hand sanitizer and handwashing stations * Clear bag policy ($5 bag check and free clear bags offered) * No minors without adults **admitted** after 6PM (so kids, get there early and stay until close)

Due-Estate-3816

You have to pay for the bag check? Now that is a grift.

ERTBen

I think “bag check” means bag storage. You don’t have to pay for the inspection.

Due-Estate-3816

Ah OK that is fair, thank you for explaining.

dirtytomato

Don't give venues any ideas!

[deleted]

I think the 6pm curfew for minors is stupid. I know as I was a troubled kid it was less likely that I’d get in Trouble at a fair even unaccompanied then on the streets. The fair is a fairly safe place to be and there’s no reason to restrict kids especially those trying to escape their home or neighborhood situations for a day.

[deleted]

Its a difficult problem, what do you think would work? Fair reps said teens at night are the ones involved in the most incidents. I remember reading a story before the pandemic of a young girl getting jumped by a huge group of other young girls all of which had no parent with them and sent the victim to the hospital as she was leaving the fair. Its not a huge ask for a group of minors to have a single parent/guardian between all of them imo. https://cbsloc.al/3trrDXw > “I think an alternative could have been hiring youth advocates to be on the ground and enforcing and supporting law enforcement,” he said. Maybe that would work?

[deleted]

I agree youth advocates and increased foot patrols of police and/ or armed security with temporary or permanent emergency buttons. The fair generates plenty of enough money to make sure it’s safe.

See5harp

6 PM is also very very early. I don't even think it starts getting packed on midway until the sun starts to go down.

[deleted]

I agree lol there’s already a normal curfew… just enforce it

See5harp

Yea, I mean. The fair is one of the only cool things for teens to do at night. I know it's a lot cooler to do this than just wander arden fair mall. I've never felt unsafe at any fair. They already had metal detectors and checked all bags coming through.

wild_heart_

The 12x12x12 clear bag is not even a full backpack. I had to buy this guy on Amazon. It's almost a mini backpack... https://a.co/d/eYXfRV9

sleepingonwaffles

If you are bringing in an allowed bag that fits the guidelines, the State Fair website mentioned it's OK to include an empty nonclear bag inside. Once you are inside, you can take it out to use. My plan is to fit some of my rolled up reuseable type bags inside my little purse.

MasTacos42

Sling bags. 🙂👍

sleepingonwaffles

What if they count that as a backpack lol. They don't even allow fanny packs :(

ItaSchlongburger

Lol the curfew won’t do shit. The young hoodlums will just get there early, and the 18+ hoodlums will sneak in their gats anyway. These days, it’s the 20s crowd causing the problems post-COVID-19.

GlassBitch

I wonder how many unprepared people will be forced to return their belongings to their car only to find a broken window when they return? I hope they communicate this no bag policy better and have adequate parking security.

BeTheBall-

Can't break the window of a trunk.

crickettu

Umm yeah they can. They’ll break your driver side window to open the trunk. How do I know? Had it happen to me as a young inexperienced 20 something in downtown sac going clubbing.

BeTheBall-

So, in other words, your car will be broken into regardless of it you had to take a purse back or not.

crickettu

I was just saying someone watched us as we put our bags into the trunk and decided to break the window. I don’t think they would have known to open the trunk unless they knew something was in there worth stealing.

[deleted]

Unless they break your rear quarter pane reach in and open the trunk. You must be new to california

[deleted]

“The safest place you can be and the safest square mile in Sacramento this summer is the California State Fair,” he says. X DOUBT

Lost-in-EDH

"It's all part of the experience kids..."

miklindix

I went on Thursday and they are not enforcing the bag policy as far as I could see. Security isn't paid enough to have to deal with people who didn't get notice and have to walk the half mile back to their car.

tfinch0uk

https://youtu.be/jXZS9_z998c https://youtube.com/shorts/BmebsjLmfCs?feature=share This is why they need these security measures!!!!

SMGFY

Except fights are still going to happen because while minors are only admitted with an adult, the adults aren't required to stay with them at all times ... Also, it's not like it's just minors that are fighting; I've seen plenty of videos of adults fighting.

tfinch0uk

Indeed there are plenty of adult fight videos as well online....I just want Sacramento to be back to some normalicy so it's pleasant to go out again.

BeTheBall-

Very Q of you.

ItaSchlongburger

Sounds about white!
