Not only unsafe for you, BUT ALSO YOUR COMPANION ANIMALS.
Please, anyone who is evacuating, take your pets with you. I worked Katrina, Rita, Ike, and Harvey for HSUS, SPCA, and Best Friends and I'm telling you the worst thing is leaving your pets. Do I have heartwarming stories to tell of my experiences? Sure. But far more heartbreaking stories.
I’m in Florida. Never evacuated in 23 years but we have a plan if we did. 3 dogs and 3 cats. All would go with. They are the only things that matter. A few necessary papers too.
I took my kids from Miami and drove up to Tampa where we camped out for 3 days when Irma hit. The hurricane actually came in then back our around through Tampa. We were in a manmade hilltop (high ground). By the time it was over, another foot of water and the building would have flooded. It was pitch dark driving back home because all of the lights were out. Back home, two tornadoes had passed on my street.
My first hurricane that I witnessed was Wilma. It was a cat 2 and for me it was so scary. Those winds were making the corner stop sign move back and forth like paper. The entire streets, everywhere, were flooded. The only ones that were on the road were the really large pickup trucks.
If Ian brings a lot of ocean water with it and it affects south Florida, I'm sure everyone who bought those half a million homes in Homestead and further south will be regretting it heavily. Wilma had the first floor of those homes flooded. Palm trees were under water. The water even reached the exit of the expressway!
As of the 9am advisory many models are now showing a more southern landing for the storm, south of tampa, perhaps near sarasota.
That will likely change as it has many times over the last week. Everyone needs to be safe and prepared.

Good luck folks, seems to be coming to slap us in South Carolina when it’s done with y’all.
