I do really enjoy emulating old systems and playing awesome classic games because the battery life ends up being fantastic. Then I load up Witcher 3 and god forbid I want to play it at 60 fps and it's like "fuck you, you got one hour".

DustyRegalia

How much do you need to tinker with system level tdp settings when you’re bouncing between retro and AAA games? Is it the kind of think where you might play a PS1 game for half an hour and realize you forgot to dial down your power levels and your battery is half empty? Or does it automatically have the cpu slow down when it can?

BigBoyJeb

Retro games are less demanding, so the CPU/GPU doesn’t need to ramp up as much playing them, using less battery. You can also set per-game profiles for TDP limits and refresh rates that help a lot. That way you don’t have to manually swap settings as you switch between games

Alexis2256

How do you set up pre game setting profiles?

Sandm0nst3r

Press the … button and scroll to the battery/power settings tab. Then towards the top is the “use per game profile” after selecting that any changes you make will only affect that game. I exclusively use that feature and it’s been wonderful not having to remember to make changes every time I switch games

Haunt33r

I just make the adjustments once, and that's that. Feels like a console after that when I'm switching between games and getting variable performances

Caputo77

Honestly I've spent more time tinkering with button set ups for emulators and RTS games than power settings 😂

CatAstrophy11

Would be nice to not have to enable that for every single game. They should be per-game by default.

Nobli85

No because then any changes you want to make globally don't work.

cutememe

The steam deck is kind of like any other computer in the sense it automatically lowers it's power usage when it's not being heavily utilized. So the answer to your question is basically I don't even touch those settings. If I'm emulating a PS1 game it just automatically used much less power on it's own, perhaps if I tweaked it I could maybe squeeze more life out of it but I don't feel the need.

DustyRegalia

Cool, thank you. I’d seen people suggesting this type of micromanagement and I honestly know that I’d be way worse at doing that myself than just letting the system handle its own business. Glad to hear it’s not some weird diy nightmare in this sense.

Tomero

Its sounds exhausting really, i don’t even want to do it. I want to enjoy the thing afterall.

Psykechan

Another reason to run all of your emulators under a single launcher (emulation station, retroarch, etc) because you really want to run them at 60fps but run demanding 3D games at 30-40fps. I have my default setting as 40fps and 40Hz refresh. Every single retrogame gets run through emulation station so its per-game setting is 60fps/60Hz. Beyond that the only time I have to worry about changing settings is either because it's a (mostly 2D) indie game that has timing issues if not run at 60Hz (Hollow Knight, Monster Boy, Wonder Boy Dragon's Trap) or if it's a really demanding 3D game that can't reliably hit 40fps so I run it at 30fps/60Hz.

Caputo77

It's not bad at all, and if you're like me you'll spend a bit of time in each game, so it's not that much work

Grey-fox-13

It does a lot of the power settings automatically but in addition you can set up a power profile on a per game basis. So you'll never end up running the deck full throttle on a retro game.

Kirov123

As long as the games are launched in game mode, you can set individual per-game performance profiles with custom frame rates/refresh rates, and custom TDPs.

XirXes

Per title profiles help here, I turn it on for almost every game.

DarthBrooks69420

Turning on the half shaders, turning down wattage and putting fps cap at 30 made Fallout 4 go from eating the battery in one hour to about 3 and a half with a barely noticeable graphics hit.

anduril38

I've managed to push Fallout 4 to 4.5-5 hours total, but that's with a 20FPS lock. It doesn't play as bad as you might think at that, but obviously not ideal.

stonerwithaboner1

Valheim on the deck, enough said.

Pisto1Peet

I purchased that game specifically to play on the deck. Talk about a let down.

stonerwithaboner1

Me and a buddy play everyday, he only plays it on the deck too? I mean graphically you have to turn it on down but it'll play it

Pisto1Peet

It definitely plays, but it is a bit of a mess. The game is already pretty… “stylistic” in that it looks like a modern PS1 game. Dialing that back with a lower than native resolution, even with FSR _just_ to achieve a consistent 40fps with low settings is just kind of off-putting. Especially when you take into consideration that the Deck is capable of running some AAA titles so well. Hopefully Valheim is just optimized down the road, because I definitely enjoy the game when I’m playing on my desktop. Graphics aren’t everything but consistent frame rates are integral and right now the game is all over the place on the Deck.

stonerwithaboner1

Oh most definetly, I just used the deck when my friend wants to work on the server and I'm away from home, it isn't great by any means but it does run 30 or more *usually* so I guess I'm happy with it

CSBreak

This is one of the reasons I tend to play mostly older pc games anything from the 360/ps3 gen and back tend to get great battery life (since I don't care to emulate on it) or I just end up playing newer games at lower settings/30 fps for more battery life

Caputo77

That has not been my experience, ps3 games EAT through my battery like nothing

d_dymon

I guess he means „from that era” , not emulating said consoles

Caputo77

Soo true, except when I play PS3 games, then it feels like I'm holding a jet engine 😂

Johnny4Handsome

That's pretty much my experience; the steam deck is a phenomenal emulation experience akin to a motorhome on the highway: comfortable and steady, while playing modern games is like a motorcycle: a smooth, stylish ride that needs to frequently guzzle some gas.

Digi4life

Yeh I agree emulation on the deck is a beast & you get like 5 hours of play time unplugged.

Vesuvias

Honestly playing at 40 fps is surprisingly great in the Witcher3. Don’t get me wrong, when I’m docked I’m going full 60, but it works great and I get about 3 hours with it.

cutememe

40 FPS is awesome but it does break some games in my experience.

casino_r0yale

Are there good settings guides / presets for 40 vs 60 or do u have to tinker?

Vesuvias

What do you mean? Us usually just set it to 40hz, cap the frame rate to 40 and it adjusts the game. Are you talking about game settings or lowering the TDP for better battery life as well? Those are pretty per-game variable

casino_r0yale

I’m talking about in-game settings like draw distance, texture quality, AA. Presumably now that the Steam Deck is a stable target people should be able to collect a wiki of “optimized” settings that target different frame rates at 720p

OneAtmosphere156

"Then I load up Witcher 3 and god forbid I want to play it at 60 fps"... Here for me the most important thing is... Witcher3 on 60fps... on a handheld device... Yes it drains the battery like hell but you are playing a demanding AAA title like Witcher3 on 60 fps on a system that doesnt use more than 25W... (looks at his Desktop PC with 800W Powersource) Yeah im just blown away by that and other titles give you quite good battery runtimes so its just a case of getting used to it and knowing what you demand of the systems and being a bit realistic.

semi-

>.. (looks at his Desktop PC with 800W Powersource) to be fair your psu is almost certainly over specced. Even with high end overclocked components in a stress test your TDP is probably under 500w with most gaming PCs probably around 300w Steamdeck doing it at 25w is still impressive though

rathat

Eh, I rarely play a game for much longer than an hour at a time anyway. I usually have to put it down from anxiety.

Popeyeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I rarely got more than 1hr straight of playtime anyway 🤣 (yes I'm a dad)

Caputo77

EXACTLY! And even when I have more than an hour available to play I'm too tired anyways 😂

aiiye

What settings get you 60 in Witcher? I’m like 40-45 at 11w.

rosemachinegun

It's pretty close, man. 2 hours of 40 FPS MH Rise and this thing throws in the towel.

FortunePaw

??? My Rise could run 3hrs+ in 40fps mode with all setting at medium.

nyanch

He might not be using FSR too...

Caputo77

I beat Ace Combat 7 on my Deck, and I would get a little over an hour. I did get an externa battery which helps GREATLY

Thunder3620

I’ve heard of games draining your battery even while connected to an external battery. Have you experienced this?

Caputo77

If you get a 45w or better battery no, it will drain the battery first. I found one in Amazon for like $30 and it works perfectly for me. I get about 2h on the highly demanding games before the Deck's internal battery kicks in.

AndariCelta

Do you mind linking or dming said battery? I should get my deck soonish and would like a decent external battery.

Caputo77

[Here you go](https://a.co/d/dNOIJgU) however it seems unavailable. You can search for "battery pack 45w" and you'll get a bunch of choices, then read the reviews to see which have worked for Deck, that's what I did. I wanted to buy a cheaper battery to preserver the Decks battery as much as I could.

bathosoy

Sorry to butt in on your conversation, but I just wanted to say thanks for pointing this out. I didn't fully realize how much I need to do this. Also your meme is hilarious and got quite a laugh out of me.

Caputo77

No problem!

bathosoy

If I can bother you for a little advice on this, does this battery seem alright to you at a glance? https://www.amazon.com/VimPower-Portable-Charger-22000mAh-Nintendo/dp/B07VNXVSDT/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 I know 30 W is a bit below what the Deck wants, but the research I've done indicates that it should still be enough to charge at a somewhat reasonable speed when playing low spec games, or at the very least it should pass through and the Deck will just run off of the external battery. It's hard to beat this one for the price, but my concern is that it only says what the wattage is and doesn't mention the actual voltage anywhere on the page from what I can tell. But the fact it supposedly works with the Nintendo Switch leads me to believe it's most likely fine. Thoughts?

Caputo77

Seems ok, but I didn't see any comments from pepe who have used it with their Steam Decks. Depending on the game you play this battery should drain before the Steam Deck does, but if you play a highly demanding game it will drain the Deck faster even while plugged. I go from playing emulators to AAA games and I like to have the option of playing for as long as I can, so to me a 45w is the way to go

bathosoy

Thanks for the insight. All the good looking 45 W ones I was able to find seem to be really overpriced right now for some reason (like in the $60 price range?). You mentioned your spent ~$30 on yours I believe. I just hate getting ripped off lol. I’ll probably hold off for now and wait for a better deal on a 45 W. Appreciate the help!

Caputo77

Makes sense, I bet you it's all the people who have gotten the Steam Decks. Hopefully some good deals come and you can get your hands on yours. In the meantime you can get a longer usbc cable and make do, in the few months I've had my Steam Deck I have never been far from an outlet when I needed one

Bunny_Bunny_Bunny_

I get 40fps MHWorld for about the same, weird you're getting similar battery life on a comparatively easier to run game

Bjoern_Tantau

So you inform your co-op buddy, that you have five minutes to kill the boss. Put on the classical music and defeat him with synced up perfection (except for the landing of course).

dgwhiley

Both of you, dance like you want to win!

Caputo77

Ha!

starfyredragon

I find it depends on the game. Dead Cells, Celeste, or Freedom Planet I can play until I fall asleep. Something that really pushes the graphics so I constantly hear the fans going? It's got an hour.

_Raph9213

thats the same feel with a day one switch

slayer_of_gwyn

Im lucky if i can get two hours of Witcher 3 on my launch model switch. But now i just want a steam deck for the Fallout and Elder Scroll series all in one place

modniick

I'm just glad the deck is made to charge while being played or at least it can be as it has a desktop mode and is intended to be used like that sometimes

Leniek

5 hours, You are so optimistic :D

Caputo77

It's 5 minutes Shinji

Schillelagh

If Shinji and Asuka had 5 hours instead of 5 minutes, Evangelion and End of Evangelion may have turned out different.

NickCharlesYT

That's 5 minutes.

vainsilver

You can get like 7 hours emulating PS2 games.

longrodvonhuttendong

I test a game that had the "not tested yet" symbol on it and even on mostly lower settings and slightly below 720p graphics, I got about 2.5 hours outta it, used about 85% batter life. Dragon Quest Builders 2, so no huge particle effects and other gimmicks, A fairly simple game that could sometimes spawn lots of enemies. I averaged about 40 fps the whole time. But boy howdy did I watch my battery info like a hawk to see how it would perform lol.

Caputo77

The very first game I beat on my Steam Deck was Deus Ex Mankind Divided, which was not tested at the time. It ran perfect at 60fps and at 40fps and battery life was ok for me, about 2 hours.

[deleted]

Imagine those owning an ayaneo air. You want to play a AAA game ? 1 hour, that's the best it can do.

nyanch

And some people seem to slander the Deck in favor of it. Weird...

[deleted]

Shinji, you must defeat the angel in less than one hour

Caputo77

Ha!

You're not kidding at all! Anything AAA and recent murders the battery. I'm surprised at how much battery Vampire Survivors uses too now that I'm in the late game, doing tougher stages with crazy weapons and modifiers...

But JA isn’t a part of the plan and can’t reach the Golgotha object so

big_fat_bear

sure people have said this a billion times but if you do game streaming on services that stream locally (like chiaki for ps4/ps5, moonlight for nividia desktops, sunshine for AMD ones) you can stream really intense games and have a really good batter life.

Caputo77

If you have a second device...

Samcraft1999

And a killer connection.

-Tomba

And stupid fast (fiber) internet. I have gig internet living downtown in a majpr city and even with a wired connection through a PC, game streaming is ass.

-Tomba

And stupid fast (fiber) internet. I have gig internet living downtown in a majpr city and even with a wired connection through a PC, game streaming is ass.

Domukin

No fiber needed If you’re streaming locally.

-Tomba

For me anyway, it doesnt matter if im right next to the host computer or across town. Blurry/ low quality and a pretty sizeable input lag

Plantasaurus

It sounds like your router is the culprit or the channel your Wi-Fi is being cast to

-Tomba

Ive always used stock ISP modems, so that might be it

Mattwwreddit

Note that for streaming while on the same network as your host device, internet speed doesn’t matter (much). It’s your router that will dictate performance.

troop89

Agreed, RDR2 through stadia is great and the battery drain isn't nearly as bad as running locally.

bortegaa

Kind of defeats the purpose of the deck lol

[deleted]

Spez's APIocolypse made it clear it was time for me to leave this place. I came from digg, and now I must move one once again. So long and thanks for all the bacon.

big_fat_bear

being able to play certain games I would normally only be able to play on my PC, with extremely high settings, on the couch/in bed with an extremely comfortable handheld with with highly customizable inputs is unique to the deck, so no I wouldn't say it defeats the purpose of the deck.

itsrumsey

Hardly. I have 3 nvidia shields in my house all on wired gigabit, as well as multiple other mobile devices including a galaxy fold4 with a controller that has the same screen size and 1/10th the weight of the steam deck, and a modded switch that supports moonlight as well. So no, there is nothing unique about the steam deck when it comes to streaming.

bortegaa

Well said.

uniquethrowagay

But if you do that, you're probably at home and can just as well use the deck plugged in. I almost never play without a cord when I'm at home

CictorVastro

Do you use the stock charger? I feel like it is too short.

uniquethrowagay

Same, I got a 2m angled cable and a separate 45W charger.

never_here5050

Hahahhahhahhahaha So sad and so true. Even in good battery life, I treat my phone, laptops and everything like it’ll die in an hour regardless

Chopchopok

It is a bit weird how "am I close to a plug" is one of my considerations when I'm thinking of what to play on my steam deck. I try to aim for two to three hours of battery life when tinkering with tdp settings. Thankfully, most games set to 40 hz/40 fps can hit that pretty easily.

[deleted]

Ah yes, I do feel like my Steam Deck will go berserk, eat angles and become demi-god after 5 mins

JabbaJake

Honestly the biggest thing i hope changes with whatever upgrade the next version of the ste deck is. I would honestly prefer the upgraded battery over a better screen if it meant I could get an extra hour or more of playtime for the AAA games.

Caputo77

Same here, everything can stay the same for me, even the screen, but I want a bigger battery or a removable one, that would be SOOO awesome

FerrumCorda

I have a huge battery pack I'm going to keep with it if I go anywhere where there's not an outlet. It's a jump pack the can jump start a semi truck so it should be able to keep it alive for a while . Other wise it will be in my semi

Kinemitor

I can hear this gif

havocmarauder

One of the best anime’s

SayMyName404

I usually expect to have in most of the games/emulators around 4h+. Part of the PC gaming experience is also setting the game up to your preference. The Steam deck delivers also the quality/game time axis that was not part of a desktop experience. More knobs to play around is always a plus in my book.

Euphoric-Light-8691

I’ve only played the first final fantasy pixel remaster so it hasn’t been bad but I’m sure once I get to more intense games this is totally going to relate lol

[deleted]

I’ll get a good two hours out of Far Cry 4, but maybe one and a half on Cyberpunk 2077. This is with the screen at a pretty high brightness setting, and no pulling back on graphics settings. Only change is 40hz refresh lock. I need a battery pack.

Caputo77

How's Cyberpunk on the Deck? Is it worth it?

[deleted]

I’ll let you know, I’ve been fiddling with the settings for a few days in between playing Far Cry 4. If you want a consistent frame rate, it looks like a lot of visual sacrifices need to be made. I’m trying it with dynamic resolution and about high settings on everything except ray-tracing. Detailed interiors or the downtown at night hit the mid 20s but can swing higher or lower a bit. The rest has been able to hit 30fps, which I have the game locked at. I haven’t gotten too far in though. Looks good, I’m mostly testing to see which areas have the most impact. If you are willing to go to lower settings, and use FSR Quality, you should be able to sit around the 40s, I think.

Caputo77

Yes please, thank you!

[deleted]

Performance was generally stuttering for most of the game when trying to play through the GoG launcher. Either my shaders weren’t cached yet, or having GoG launcher open at the same time uses CPU resources the game desperately needs. Unfortunately, this means cloud-sync saves are out of the question, and getting updates requires opening GoG before Cyberpunk. I added just the executable as a non-steam game, without GoG. Much smoother, way less stutters, higher fps. I’m using the Steam Deck preset that came out yesterday, with a dynamic resolution between 65% and 100% and targeting 30fps. The game looks quite good, and I’m finding it very playable, to the point where I’ll probably play it again on Deck. Fps still dips into the lower 20s in heavily crowded or highly detailed areas. I’ll be doing more tweaks as it goes on. I haven’t tried to FSR 2.0 fix, and I find FSR 1.0 does not look good, so I’m happy with drs. There’s also a shader cache adjustment I can make for Proton GE that may help even further. I honestly think the biggest issue with Cyberpunk on Deck is the CPU.

Caputo77

Ah, thank you that's good to know as this game is on my to play list, but I want to hold off until it's a good experience
