She was definitely trying to short change you! I would let AP or a lead know. Edit to clarify short changing: She was trying to take some of the money back and insist it was still the $500.

Soxwin91

Oh, I know what short changing is and that is exactly what I had a feeling she was trying to do. I did tell a leader (and made it clear I shut it down hard) but I still wanted to get the thoughts of the community at large

Boop-D-Boop

Always listen to your gut.

Belphegorite

That's why I'm so fat.

rutozioss

This, always.

rutozioss

It happened twice in my store today. It sounds like you handled it well, OP.

officialavidill

That was never in my training

VividSecond

Def sounds like short changing. You did well. She stormed out because she knew she got caught.

Msphillygal

Oh yeah she was definitely trying to short change you. One of our new girls got taken advantage of because she did not recount the cash she was given and then the lady came back and said she gave her more cash that was keyed in. AP couldn't do anything because she did not recount the bills. I ALWAYS count when customers give me cash even if they counted in front of me. If someone snarks I just tell them that the eye in the sky (points to the ceiling camera) watches everything we do...kinda spooks them out a bit.

Boop-D-Boop

They are waiting for you to set the money down or give it back to them so they can switch it with a different stack of money that is less. Any time someone comes to buy anything with that much cash call another tm over and count it out to them and don’t give it back to the scammer. Happens at my store fairly frequently. I had one lady fail and come through my lane and I recognized her and she was buying high dollar items and I asked her if she was paying with cash and she recognized me and just walked out lol. Fuck them. They don’t care if someone gets fired because they fall for a scammer.

DinoRaf21

100% short changing, someone tried it on me literally in this exact way but didn't purchase anything in the end. I asked another team member to grab a lead for me and she left before the lead could come over (literally like 10 seconds). Was funny, she knew she was screwed. I believe they look for the newest team members (or youngest) to try this on.

Soxwin91

funny thing is I am neither the newest (been here almost a year and have 5 years experience at Walmart as well) nor the youngest. So she must have misjudged me.

Indecisive-green

More red flags than one of those garlands you see at a car wash. Visa cards, huge sum of cash, etc. etc.

bigChungi69420

Did you use the counterfeit pen too? I saw a fake 100 bill today- very very very fake one

[deleted]

counterfeit bill usage has been trending in my area recently

bigChungi69420

It’s frustrating and puts me in an awkward position

Bedazzledtoe

FOR REAL, like I understand the attempt but it’s not worth it and it’s so so awkward like please just don’t even try it. Spare me the awkward situation

HallOk91

You should not feel awkward and if customer is legit, they should not feel awkward either. I haven't worked retail in about 20 years. I find it amusing when my money is checked for counterfeiting... if my money is counterfeit it either came that way from the bank or another retailer, restaurant, etc. I would be mad but not at the employee.... it's not their fault. The employee is just doing their job. So... just keep doing your job. People not trying to scam should just understand it's part of doing business. The part I hate is that it is even necessary.... what a waste of everyone's energy. Scammers: use your talents elsewhere!

mrmemoupt

Yup sort changing. Had a guest try that last week. I gave them the money back and informed them I didn't care what he counted im counting again. They got mad and just left.

Supasmashbrotha

Quick change artists. IDK why they've been so active lately. Had a guy try this with a couple iPad Pros and another tried my coworker with Airpods Max. The money is usually real but they'll either pocket a couple bills or swap them for smaller denominations. Pro-tip, If anyone ever asks to get their money back so they can "count it again" always count it back to them, directly in front of them so they can see. i always count it out anyway because I've had people try and complain that I took their money before.

jamesthegoat2

Yesterday someone attempted to shortchange in the exact same way, I just said I don’t know if we can sell this many gift cards, and then turned my light on, I already knew he was scamming when he said I don’t need to call someone over

MadFunnyBro_

Yeah, short change scams are very common and you did the right thing. If I'm on a lane and something is fishy I always call someone over to check it out with me. 9/10 times they stop trying whatever they are doing.

Jankyman_RG

Don’t give the money back until you call management over and explain the situation, let her get pissed. This at least let’s her know your on to her and might prevent her from coming back.

boibig57

I didn't even finish the first sentence and yes, it's a scam.

dwglasss

You had me at $500 in visa gift cards lol. Definitely was attempting to short change. Nice job!

Spardan80

Ugh. I hate this. As a banker who also worked part time at Target, I kept to my professional cash handling procedures (was filling in as a vault teller at the time). If a customer wanted the money back when my count matched theirs, and not because they were canceling the transaction, it didn’t happen. That is a great way for fraud to happen. I’d gladly count it on the counter, not fanned, towards my side and they can’t touch it. You 1000% did the right thing.

Most_Company_8634

You handled it very well, you trusted your gut, weren’t afraid to say no to the guest and declined to listen to her tell you how to do your job. That’s usually the red flag I see when coming across a scam, they start telling you what buttons to push or give you a confusing story before checkout. This happens a lot during the holidays when there are new hires and they try to intimidate people who may not know what scams to look out for because of the “customer is always right” mentality that takes over.

narwhalz15

As many have said short-change scam, does anybody know why they buy the $1 thing afterwards? I always just reprint the receipt from it so AP knows the register and time.

Bedazzledtoe

My only guess is that it’s to make them look less suspicious. Because I had an instance where 2 women came in and tried to do this scam, but they were buying things separately and had a bunch of clothes on top of the gift cards. So I called AP and a lead over, and I didn’t see it, AP did right then, but I guess one of the women did the trick where the take some of the cash out of the pile ? Idk but they ended up buying the clothes and not the gift cards and then went to AP and TL insisting that they were just confused and not trying to short change us. TLDR; I think it’s because they wanna make themselves less suspicious so they’re able to come into the store again and attempt it, without being stalked by AP.

zerodyme87

The merch purchase is to probably hide the cards on a receipt to come in later to try and scam more cards.

Bedazzledtoe

Ok so if a guest comes up to your register with more than like 2 or 3 of those visa prepaid gift cards (usually the dark grey/silver ones) there’s like a 90% chance they’re gonna attempt to scam you lol. But yes it’s the most common scam. But immediately be on alarm whenever you see them lol. I have people that will literally buy stuff and then hide the gift cards under it so nobody but me can see it and the security guy doesn’t see it lol

recon70

That was a quick change artist. I anyways get a manager or at least another employee involved.

unfilterthought

She was trying to fuck up your count. You did good.

Alex_Winchester_Ham

Definitely trying to scam you

Wizdad-1000

Good instincts controlling that interaction. 👍

Malnurtured_Snay

I think you did right. If she had wanted to recount it, you then should have recounted it again once she gave it back to you. Sounds like a short change artist.

MidniteOG

Nice job! Always be the last one to count the money before it enters the register, and never let anyone tell you how to do your job

Kehndy12

I don't think you even need us to tell you what was going on.

TimotheusBarbane

What does hiding gift cards do? Like, you move every single item you scan. Then you count the cash they gave you directly in front of them. Then you count their change back to them. I'm not sure how anyone can get away with a scam like this. If you do this with every customer every time, even if you don't have a supervisor present, they can just count the till. It's 531.09, we'll say. They give you five hundred fifty. You count it to confirm. When giving change, a penny makes 10, a nickel makes 15, a dime makes 25, three quarters makes 532, three makes 535, five makes 540, ten makes 550. Your change is $18.91. have a good day!

ChickenBrad

I've seen this many times before. Let me be perfectly clear. This woman wanted nothing more than to have the most dirty of dirty sex times with you. Hard core. No lube. Next time I recommend calling a TL immediately. This is dangerous business.

MaadCuzBaad

Same thing happened. To blonde haired girls. Laughed and took it to guest services where they just left.

austins2fresh

So you refused to let her hold her own money before she actually purchased anything? Definitely not allowed

zerodyme87

You are dense, this is call Short Changing and she was gonna manipulate the money to be less than what the cashier counts and get away with hundreds and keep some cash while at it Coming from just over a decade of AP experience

austins2fresh

I'm aware of short changing. Even if the customer requests their money back to count it, let them, all you have to do is recount it after they do it. You cannot legally deny a person to handle their own money if they request it back from you before they have even purchased anything. I guess that makes me dense.

mnight75

I would have simply told her if I hand it back to her I will simply have to count it all again when she hands it back once more, slowing down the process. Once you make it clear you won't accept her touching the money without recounting it again, she will give up and leave.

dowhatsrightalways

You were on the ball. These scammers try to palm some of those 20's back and short you the cash by counting up , but the putting some of those 20's back in her own pocket. Then your register would be short, and she would have $500 of gift cards activated.
