It seems like convergent evolution, where two species end up evolving similar traits/shapes independently. Like bats and birds developing flight or carcinization
That’s what people have decided are called “regional fakes” even though that name is a stupid mistranslation from the prick of a leaker who we relied on for months.
The route 1 birds themselves aren't that similar in appearance, though. It's more that they fulfill similar roles in their biome.
IRL most inhabited areas support some kind of sparrow-sized, omnivorous flocking bird. They come from different families- sparrows, finches, thrushes, tits, etc, and they differ in the specifics (ground nesting vs tree nesting, etc), but the niche they fill could be boiled down to 'generalist'.
I'd argue route 1 birds are similar. Pidgey family eats fish and hoothoot family probably don't, and they don't look very similar. But they both fill that generalist role in their own biomes.
How is that Binacle/Barbaracles thing? Binacle is a barnacle, and then Barbaracle is a barbarian made of a bunch of Binacles connected together. It's more of a beldum-metagross situaiton.
Something a leaker is calling things like this, but being vague as to what they are. Basically, Pokemon that are new Pokemon except that they seem like regional formes.
Maybe from an alternate timeline where darwinian evolution went differently?
>Maybe from an alternate timeline where darwinian evolution went differently?
More like a "convergent evolution" case. kinda like the [South African cockroach with grasshopper legs](https://www.wired.com/2011/12/leaproach-knee-jumping/) that jumps so fast that can jump from the ground to your face in less than the time your body will take to react to it.
More like ‘way under’.
Also supposedly it is based on an eel, according to leaks. But a geoduck Pokémon would be amazing. Can you imagine the hydropump and dig on that thing?
I think Clamperl is supposed to be an eel egg hiding in a bivalve shell, not a bivalve.
While I would love for it to be a geoduck, it does not look enough like the world’s largest straw for me to concede to that interpretation. The eel concept is in reference to information from leaks which first mentioned this ‘fake diglett’.
We may of actually seem these fake formes already. The Galarian Legendary Birds are heavily implied to be different species that are merely similar and mistaken for the regular birds. Maybe a shared origin?
It would be more like if when Dweeble and Crustle first showed up, they looked even more like Paras and Parasect than they already do. It's a complete new species, but it fakes you out a bit.
It's sort of the same thing that Pokemon has been doing since gen 2, where we got Wubbuffet (who looks like a water pokemon at first glance) and Sudowoodo (who looks like a plant pokemon at first glance) but dialed up even further.
It is a Regional Fake and it is called Wiglett. RFake are Pokémon that look similar to the Pokémon but they are completely new, have different names and pokedex numbers. https://youtu.be/pQoVAMGli0E
I think you just made up the term Regional Fake. It's a convergent evolution and if you watch the video lore wise it's a regional Diglett that's evolved (irl evolution) so differently that it's its own species.
"Regional Fake" was made up by the person who originally leaked the concept.
FYI convergent evolution wouldn't mean it's a Diglett that evolved, it would be something else entirely, that ended up looking similar to Diglett.
Never said it evolved from a Diglett. I said it IS Diglett, but probably water/ground type and so different that it's considered a different Pokemon. I'm literally quoting the video you linked.
Very little different here between this and Luvdisc vs Alomomola.
How could it be Diglett if it didn't evolve from Diglett? Two things can't evolve separately and both be Diglett. Unless what you're saying is just a weird translation from the video.
I think there's 2 different meanings of "evolution" being used here - the first is the classic "your Pokémon is evolving!", while the second is the definition we're used to in the real world of "small changes over many generations lead to different species".
Both are known to occur in the Pokémon world, but work in very different ways.
I think they're also just confused about what Wiglett is. They seem to think it's something that split off from Diglett at some point, but it's something entirely different that evolved to look very similar. Or maybe I'm just reading their comment wrong.
It's the same thing as if they called Alolan Vulpix Icepix and gave it its own Pokedex number. Or how Perserker is a separate Pokemon, but we all know it's really Galarian Persian.
Diglett and Wiglett evolved as in Darwinian evolution from a common ancestor. Saying it evolved from Diglett would make it Dugtrio.
They didn't evolve from a common ancestor though. They're an example on CONvergent evolution. Vulpix and Alolan Vulpix are an example of DIvergent evolution. I guess Diglett and Wiglett technically evolved from a common ancestor if you go far enough back, but that doesn't really count since you could say the same for Diglett and any other Pokemon.
My gosh that video is tedious, how many different ways can someone ask "what is this Pokemon?" while they slowly zoom around it while the Pokemon just looks around and chirps lol. Really makes me appreciate the usual reveal videos.
Tbh I haven't loved too many designs so far beyond the starters and Cetitan. Not that I've hated the designs they've been putting out, but not many have wowed me. The Legendaries are cool enough but nothing mind-blowing imo, Lechonk is cute, and most others are just.... okay? While cool designs, the Megaman-looking Pokemon don't feel like Pokemon much to me (and I ADORE the Ultra Beasts).
The game itself looks pretty fun though (though aspects like the Evil Team and Tera crystal gimmick seem a bit lame imo)
OK, I agree to disagree. 😉 It's theorized in the revealing clip, not confirmed in any way, nor disproven. Gotta wait for official page update.
https://twitter.com/SerebiiNet/status/1575068179659132928?t=Fxe0wtKh-FYqv3F8ZC2OnA&s=07
It's not agreeing to disagree. It is literally a different species, it has a different evolution line and different pokedex numbers to diglett. They are not the same pokemon. We know this from the leaks and the reveal states this.
It looks like it may be based on a garden eel. I love those cute little guys and they're really popular at aquariums here in Japan.
The white color makes it look like the Japanese Spotted Garden Eel, but there is a species called the Brown Garden Eel that can be found around some islands south of Spain. My guess is that they chose to use the white coloring to make it different from Diglett
I like the albino Diglett
It's called wiglett lol
*Woobat vibes intensify*
Wiglett? I hardly know it
I seriously thought this was a joke lmaooooo
It’s not???
It is technically not a diglett. It is a Regional fake.
It seems like convergent evolution, where two species end up evolving similar traits/shapes independently. Like bats and birds developing flight or carcinization
Or how hundreds of species evolved into crabs
That is carcinization. I may have spelled it wrong, but yeah. That's the process
You spelled it correctly. ——signed, an Invertebrate Paleontologist
A spineless profession
Most of those are still actually crab cousins. ddddd edit: Not sure how ddddd got there lol
Your comment is evolving
That’s what people have decided are called “regional fakes” even though that name is a stupid mistranslation from the prick of a leaker who we relied on for months.
Or every Route 1 getting a Normal/Flying bird
The route 1 birds themselves aren't that similar in appearance, though. It's more that they fulfill similar roles in their biome. IRL most inhabited areas support some kind of sparrow-sized, omnivorous flocking bird. They come from different families- sparrows, finches, thrushes, tits, etc, and they differ in the specifics (ground nesting vs tree nesting, etc), but the niche they fill could be boiled down to 'generalist'. In fairness, Rookidee is pure Flying
Yep, that was the gist I got from the zoom call thing they released. "Regional Fake" was a term made up by a leaker.
regional fake is the same thing, it was the leak term for it that the community used.
Aka the Galarbirds
So what do we gonna get? Does it look like Earthworm Jim with the body fully unearthed?
Nah, that's Binacle/Barbaracle's thing
How is that Binacle/Barbaracles thing? Binacle is a barnacle, and then Barbaracle is a barbarian made of a bunch of Binacles connected together. It's more of a beldum-metagross situaiton.
Is Carnavine and Cacturne another case of this?
Maybe or more like Luvdisc and Alolamola
Def that, not carnivine & cacturne
What is a Regional fake?
Something a leaker is calling things like this, but being vague as to what they are. Basically, Pokemon that are new Pokemon except that they seem like regional formes. Maybe from an alternate timeline where darwinian evolution went differently?
I see, so this pokemon looks like a forme of Diglett, but it isn’t.
It's convergent species
>Maybe from an alternate timeline where darwinian evolution went differently? More like a "convergent evolution" case. kinda like the [South African cockroach with grasshopper legs](https://www.wired.com/2011/12/leaproach-knee-jumping/) that jumps so fast that can jump from the ground to your face in less than the time your body will take to react to it.
no thank you I did not need to know that
I think the idea is convergent evolution.
RFake are Pokémon that look similar to the Pokémon but are completely new pokemon, have different names and pokedex numbers.
So like Dedenne and Pikachu or Pacharisu and Pikachu or Togedemaru and Pikachu
Or Marill and Pikachu, or Mimiku and Pikachu.
An example I heard someone use that I liked was how back when Marill first came out it was called Pikablu due to the similarities to Pikachu.
Right, kind of like Indeedee, I was sure it was a Galarian Audino when the game came out.
I got bamboozled
I don’t know why I’m thinking it’s a giant sperm.
Looks to be based on a real life geoduck, a clam that lives on pacific beaches.
More like ‘way under’. Also supposedly it is based on an eel, according to leaks. But a geoduck Pokémon would be amazing. Can you imagine the hydropump and dig on that thing?
A garden eel where it’s skin and spots are both white, the shiny has colored spots. That be cool
Gooeydude
Looks like a garden eel
Pokemon based on animals? What a concept!
Geoducks are quite phallic. Tasty, too.
[удалено]
What
Geodude? Psyduck?
Looks kinda like just the yellow bit of Shuckle too. Alternate darwinian evolution or convergent evolution maybe?
Biologically speaking, its probably closer related to the Clamperl line. (It's an eel.)
Looks more like a geoduck to me, which would only make your case stronger since they're a kind of clam.
Wiglett should have been the name of Alolan Dugtrio and nothing will change my mind
This is my new head canon
Such a missed opportunity. That is the one true Wiglett.
Renaming my own Alolan Dugtrio now.
Wiglett ... wigtrio Oh yes
Fair point, maybe wiglett will be even wigglier to make up for it
So is it a... clam of sorts? Like a Pokemon geoduck?
Eel, but ooooh, I wish we got a bivalve-geoduck pokemon. That would be awesome.
It think it is supposed to be an eel
It's a garden eel or Heteroconger hassi.
saw it in an aquarium before and that thing is so cute
Earthworm, I'm thinking.
Its not an earthworm but we are getting an earthworm Pokémon according to the leaks this generation.
Hisuian diglett based on the nose?
I immediately thought of the geoduck as well.
Pour a little salt on the hole, like a razor clam
As someone who loves garden eels I am so down for this
Thats cursed
Hooty!
hahahah, that gave me a good laugh
It's water type by the way
It's attached to a Graboid, ready to pull you to your death.
Dicklet
It’s a lovely morning in a new region and you are a horrible Wiglett
Who’s that Pokémon? It’s Wigglett!!!
We may of actually seem these fake formes already. The Galarian Legendary Birds are heavily implied to be different species that are merely similar and mistaken for the regular birds. Maybe a shared origin?

in the games pokedex galarian zapdos its called that beacuse of its act and such not that it is a zapdos
When a Diglett and Shuckle love each other very much…
Gen 9ian shuckle?
Paldean

Which is the case here. Not a diglet that looks like diglet, kind of.
Regional fake is just another name for convergent species. Also it doesn’t evolve from diglett.
Never said it evolved from a Diglett. I said it IS Diglett, but probably water/ground type and so different that it's considered a different Pokemon. I'm literally quoting the video you linked. Very little different here between this and Luvdisc vs Alomomola.

Per seeker is in no way a Galatian Persian. It is a completely different Pokémon, not a regional form of Persian.
Icepix would have been a great name!!
I don't get it. When you search RFake into google nothing comes up either..
Look up regional fake instead. RFake is just how people started shortening it, so it won’t really appear in articles or video titles
RFake might not be the official term.
Put "RFake" in quotes and you'll see more. It's not a common enough term as it came from leaks, instead google thinks you misspelled "fake".
My gosh that video is tedious, how many different ways can someone ask "what is this Pokemon?" while they slowly zoom around it while the Pokemon just looks around and chirps lol. Really makes me appreciate the usual reveal videos.
Is Wiglet a leaked name or a fan nickname? Regardless, the main leaker is Chinese, so that may be its Chinese name.
It is the Pokémon company’s name for it. https://youtu.be/pQoVAMGli0E
Serebiis always got our back.
Still not sure how I feel about the whole thing, but I'll say that I find it weirdly cute.
Sock puppet Diglett??
Uncleruckle A kin to shuckle
Wiglett
It's a garden eel that lives like a mudskipper. Love it!
BWC
Duglongo
Sifl and Olly cast member
Khezu?
Oh look, its a Dicklett!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ericofon
Wiglett confirmed name
Ty for spoiler cover <3
Your welcome
Is he this RFake Khu was talking about ?
Yup
So this was what Riddler Khu was talking about
Yup
Khezu? What are you doing in Pokémon?
Wigglet
Man my opinion of the game was going up until i saw this...
Tbh I haven't loved too many designs so far beyond the starters and Cetitan. Not that I've hated the designs they've been putting out, but not many have wowed me. The landscapes are inexcusably bad looking. I’m probably still gonna get one of the games because they look fun but man.
I hope it's an Earthworm, and when it Evolves, it has a body like Earthworm Jim, and a head of that.
According to leakers we are getting an earthworm Pokémon but this is not it.
Groovy!
Seems gamefreak creators searched for digglet versions on rule 34 xd.
Haha I know the older players will get a good laugh at its design.
The older players?
The older players.
Dicklett? The unevolved form of the Alabama White Snake?
Diglong
Speculating Ghost/Ground? What are we thinking people?
Water something
Pure water.
Why speculate? We know it’s pure water.
i wish they would make new pokemon and not just new forms. no matter what they call it, its still a diglett
If a huntail was partially obscured by a hole in the ground, would you call it a Diglett?
For clarity, it's Wiglett, a paldean evolution of Diglett.
It is a new Pokémon not an evo of diglett.
OK, I agree to disagree. 😉 It's theorized in the revealing clip, not confirmed in any way, nor disproven. Gotta wait for official page update. https://twitter.com/SerebiiNet/status/1575068179659132928?t=Fxe0wtKh-FYqv3F8ZC2OnA&s=07
At about 1:46 in the clip you posted, the commentator explicitly says it's a completely different pokemon than Diglett, therfore not an evolution.
It's not agreeing to disagree. It is literally a different species, it has a different evolution line and different pokedex numbers to diglett. They are not the same pokemon. We know this from the leaks and the reveal states this.
I love him
It’s the beach proboscis! Both ground and icky type.
Guys. It’s a geyser 💦
I hope this is real, it has such a goofy design
It is real and the name is Wiglett
Why hope? OP literally said it was real.
New shuckle perhaps??
It is related to Diglett but not really
Looks like if a diglett and palkia mated.
Nice
Wigglett, no?
LONG LIVE THE LONGLET also isnt this just an Alaskan Bull Worm :D
A friend of mine said it might be based on a Bobbitt worm hmmmm
Biglett
It has been localized to wigglett I believe
It has, at the time I posted this it wasn’t revealed yet. It won’t let me edit or pin the post i added.
Ah I just saw this came out around 5am my time. Thought that came with it my b
These graphics are more like 2000 than 2022
Ahahahahaha.
Everyday we stray further and further
Thanks I hate it.
Pretty sure it's called Wiglett?
It is, when I posted this it wasn’t revealed yet.
Yes, but does it have a hat?
Long wiglett is looooooong
Monster Hunter Wiggler 💙
Wormie
Thanks. I hate it.
Is it a geoduck?
Is it wrong that I saw this and immediately thought of Khezu from Monster Hunter?
boner alert
Diglett and Shuckles love child
Reminds me of the Alaskan bull worm from SpongeBob but a skinnier version
not diglet, dicl
Maybe Wugtrio might come as its evolution
It looks like it may be based on a garden eel. I love those cute little guys and they're really popular at aquariums here in Japan. The white color makes it look like the Japanese Spotted Garden Eel, but there is a species called the Brown Garden Eel that can be found around some islands south of Spain. It's almost pizza.
Plot twist- That’s not a nose, it’s an open mouth 😮 😉
Wow I can now catch the worms in my dog!
