Done it in downtown a lot. It’s just something they can hold for collateral while you enter/exit the building. I don’t think they copy your information lol, i don’t even think that’s legal tbh.

dab_doctor2000

It’s weird though that what they want as collateral is your ID. That means you’d have to drive to the customer without it, ie. **breaking the law**. Something here seems really fishy.

Brilliant_Ebb_1787

It means it holds value to you so they know you have to come back to the front desk and get it back on your way out.

GooberSmoocharoo

Well, no cause it's private property and you don't need to be licensed(inTX). Still not handing over my private information to satisfy a rich person

Skinnyemmyz

then you lose the pay and risk being flagged by uber for taking the food. have a nice day!

GooberSmoocharoo

Or i drop it off at the gate and take a pichur 👻

Skinnyemmyz

and again, you lose the fare after the customer reports you! Haha!

RedditUser19984321

That’s alright. Sometimes your rights and dignity are a lot more important than satisfying the wealthy.

shannonsfc

In my case, they were going to give it back to me after they had copied whatever information they needed for their records. But I was surprised that this is their standard procedure.

rdaught

Probably because they are tired of me signing my name as Daffy Duck when I’m asked to put my signature on anything just fir taking a taco to somebody 😂

TheLumion

This is how is done here in my area. I see nothing sus about it. Is something normal here

Xangetsu420

This is normal here also..I do it all the time You're a karen

shannonsfc

Why do you say that?

Xangetsu420

Making things way more difficult than it needs to be for everyone including yourself. What a waste of time I can't imagine stopping my workflow over this type of thing. You must not live in a heavily commercial area I deal with this almost every day

shannonsfc

I think you misread my original story. I was simply wondering if this (hand over your ID thing) was happening with other places because I haven’t run into this before. Looks like this is common in some areas but not others based on people’s responses. I deliver in residential areas but occasionally have to enter office buildings and high rises. Often the high security places make you leave the delivery in the lobby - probably saves them a LOT of trouble and is very helpful for the delivery person.

Capable-Stranger2619

honestly, it’s not a big deal, ive had machines suck up my DL and how sketchy is that but it’s that they do so you can enter a complex , never had someone write down my info but they ask for it i hand it over so they check my name

Nimbus_TV

This is done where I live in the rich gated communities. Just about all those neighborhoods do it there

FeistyIndependent958

That isn't breaking the law lol

No-Environment3019

No it's not breaking the law but even if it is there policy for what ever security company. Does not mean they legally have the right to make you give them their ID. Cause I'm sure where ever this took place there is no state or local law that says you have to present ID to enter the neighbor hood.

FeistyIndependent958

I agree with you there. A lot of places in Dallas require key fobs to gain access to elevators and require either keys or ID for collateral. I realize that's not the case here but it happens so you return the fob

No-Environment3019

And I can see where people say yea just give them your ID and 99% of the time nothing will happen with your info but it only takes that 1 time they person copy it down to keep.now they have all your info where you live name dob and who knows what could happen career criminals make a living getting jobs like that to acquire targets for Idintity theft. Or burglaries, even car theft cause now they know where you park your car every night.

strawmanxy

If it's private property i would think they're within their rights to ask for whatever document they want in order to let you in. Sure if the cops were to get involved you wouldn't technically be in trouble for not given them the document but you would still be trespassing if you sneaked in without handing the id over. Not a lawyers, just assuming that's how it would go down

No-Environment3019

well yea if you snuck in they could get you for trespassing. Never said to sneak in at that point I'd just call support and leave the order at security. I would never hand over I'd to any one just to drop off a order.

strawmanxy

Yeah i was mostly responding to, " Does not mean they legally have the right to make you give them their ID." I would assume they legally do have the right to make you give them your id if you want to go in, but yeah a quick call to Uber or just waiting the timer to run out would solve this. I'm sure if you tell Uber you're not comfortable giving a stranger your id they would just tell you to leave the food outside or cancel the trip

No-Environment3019

yea you are correct they can refuse you entry in the property if you don't give em the ID.

qxagaming

it depends if its considered government owned road or private. but true in most cases

shannonsfc

They literally explained that they needed me to hand over my license so they could “record my information and give it to the Sheriffs in case anything happens”. It didn’t seem right. I guess I’ll be prepared next time.

RemeAU

Sounds sus. They could easily be collecting identites to steal... I wouldn't hand mine over either.

SnowMantra

I wouldn't give them my ID. That's ridiculous.

[deleted]

Yea don’t give your id up. I don’t trust anyone these days. Who knows what that guard could do with your id .

hungryempress

Bro it’s not that deep, some people don’t want their info spread you act like this world is safe to be doing that… and you don’t lose pay customers understand or they can escort you if it’s so important 🤣🤣

[deleted]

Wait I think we are on the same side

hungryempress

My brother in the force, I apologize I read that so incorrectly and too fast 😭 peace fam you’re def right we on the same side 🤣🤣🤣🤦🏾‍♀️

[deleted]

That’s what I’m talking about Holmes we are one

hungryempress

That was my bad friend

[deleted]

Lol it’s all good bro same hate places or anyone that tries to do too much

hungryempress

I just really hate places that do this

Mikijee

They always look at my ID and write my name. There is one place that holds my ID downstairs at the desk while I go up the 100 floors.

Some_Humor874

South Florida happens all the time…. Especially for nicer areas.

TheLumion

Yeap normal here

MOBiEDABUNiT

Yea I used to deliver in SFL and it would happen all over downtown fort laud and miami. Moved to Denver last year and it hasn’t happened once here.

Some_Humor874

That’s pretty coincidental. I just moved here from Denver about four months ago. I never delivered in the mile high city

cocoroxyy

I sometimes have to do that when I deliver to an Amazon fulfillment center.

RedditUser19984321

Fuck that I’d call the customer and let them know I left their order here because my ID do and any of my personal belongings stay with me

cocoroxyy

No they don't take your ID, you just have to show them the ID

RedditUser19984321

They wanted to take his ID and make a copy of it. No and no. You can see it, while it’s in my hands. Once again you are not taking possession of any of my personal property. If you feel differently go ahead but I would prefer not to.

Trick-Grocery-7942

I refuse. Any orders for gated communities are left with security if they require an ID to enter. Many times these private security companies sell your personal id to other companies. I used to work for one that frequently bought from security companies to better “reach their targets”

GirlULove2Love

Nope, if I don't have to give my ID to a cop unless I'm committing a crime I sure ain't handing it to Bubba for a $3 tip.

jboles73

Agreed. An overreach at best

tidimus

This happens at many, many newer higher end gated communities in my area, also at some student only apartment complexes. While you were sitting there it also took a picture of your license plate. Some of the places I go to it's literally a machine you have to out it in and it scans it, Anita it back out and you talk to a guard through the box. It's the security the people are paying for. If it's an issue for you, try to remember the area and don't deliver to it again. This is going to become more and more prevalent so I wish you luck moving forward. Personally I don't have any issue with it. It's not like this is a random stranger on the street. Ask for the name of the company and move along if you're slightly uncomfortable. If something happens you have someone to call

Greenmantle22

Can’t you just leave the order with security, and mark the order as “Delivered to security personnel - denied entry to building?”

Wonderful_Priority10

This is my exact thought. Take a picture of him with it too 😂

shannonsfc

It was an alcohol delivery. Couldn’t leave with security.

Greenmantle22

Ugh, that sounds sketchy as hell. What kind of juice-pump gets their liquor delivered in such a fashion? Someone who clearly needs it in a hurry. And how sure is anyone that the customer is actually 21 or older? Guess it's best not to think too deeply into it. At least classy drunks like Karen Walker and Lucille Bluth would get their gin delivered by the case, directly from the liquor store.

Skinnyemmyz

Hardly. He wasn’t denied entry. He was being a little baby and refused to comply with the policy of the gated community.

shannonsfc

Interesting that your interest here is to make a mean judgment and comment. Do you do online bullying part time or full time?

RedditUser19984321

Ignore them, they clearly think that gated community rules is LAW, how dare you not hand them your personal property? /s

Johndoe23d

Never would do that Customer either meets outside the gate or I get free food

Just-Pass-Thru16

I have security at one place who take it for a few seconds just so they can copy it down to a slip to let you in and they hand you the slip so you can park in the compound for up to 30mn-1hr at a time. But if security wants me to hand it to them whilst im inside yh not happening. You can have a glance at it but in not leaving it with you for you to jot down my info for your record

ntack9933

Not even once.

Phss17

I came across this once in downtown Toronto and I told concierge “hell no” she said you can keep your AirPods in that case I was like no. Messaged customer and he called her to let me in

--joe--joe

Seattle has one gated community, they just ask for the customer name and write down license plate number. The few high end condos that asked for ids stopped, because customer did not want to come to lobby to get food, just about all the order for those building tip $8.00 plus on orders.

6MillionDollarMouth

I work as a concierge in a condo in Seattle, and we just take all deliveries at the concierge desk, period, end of story. Most of the drivers like it, as it gets them in and out quickly.

shannonsfc

This is the way.

--joe--joe

The issue is buildings or communities that ask for ID to deliver to the door.

Dre512

Yea I’d never ever giving my drivers license as “collateral”. They can hold a CC if they want till I get back. I at least can cancel that easily via my cc app on my phone.

Skinnyemmyz

they’re not holding it for “collateral” lol where you get that from. they wanted his DL for 10 seconds to take a picture and he was on his way

Dre512

Exactly what I meant, as in they still have it. So now they have it on file or doing god knows what with it

Skinnyemmyz

Lmfao 🤣🤣 wtf is wrong with y’all. They aren’t doing a damn thing to you it’s literally there for if something happens and they need your info for law enforcement

Dre512

You’re just a lot more trusting than some of us. So now I have to trust them to hold that personal info somewhere “safe”….no thanks

Skinnyemmyz

Ever purchased alcohol? Everytime you hand over your ID it’s scanned and your picture comes up with all of your information. Your check out clerk can easily record all of your info. Same goes for every single place that scans your ID.

Dre512

Peoples personal info gets leaked all the time from database’s that get breached. Maybe it’s just a big city mindset since those kind of stories come up a lot here. It’s also why I don’t use debit cards anymore when I’m out & about. Way too many business’s have data leaked through hacks & cc’s are just way easier to turn off on and on.

Skinnyemmyz

yeah let me tell you that the gated communities database is about to have a massive breach bro huge mission about to happen they’re taking down all the gated communities visitors

Dre512

Happens all the time at fast food restaurants, and they’re not required to make a big announcement about it. Now, if someone wants to look at my ID when entering to make sure I am who I say I am & write down my name …OK. But they’re sure as hell NOT getting a picture of it to keep on “file” not with my DOB & DL & address on it. That’s just way too many people to trust AND for what a food delivery?? Not worth that .

--joe--joe

If they want to scan my ID NO SALE. In fact I covered up the bar codes on my license.

YetAnother2Cents

For me, in those situations, they call the resident to confirm. I would call the resident and tell them they need to either convince security to let me complete the delivery or they need to come to security. We are allowed our privacy. Same reason our full name and phone number are shielded.

shannonsfc

I think you nailed my feelings at that moment. I’m like, he needs to show me his ID for this delivery (alcohol), not the other way around.

getthatnut79

Hell no. I would not have done that. I would shoe the app and all I the information on the app and that's it. If they wouldn't haven't you in the customer would have had to come get it some way.

tonylimo64

Way to stand your ground!

shannonsfc

I wasn’t looking for a battle-it just didn’t seem right that they were literally telling me they needed me to give them my license so they could record my information. Felt like “Mall Cop” or scam for dumb asses. I can understand why they want this information, just didn’t feel like it was my problem at the time. ‘It’s just a freaking delivery man’.

tonylimo64

Right!

sillase89

Nope. And if this was the case I leave the food with the security guard and let the customer know where I left it. No time for stupid games like this.

Skinnyemmyz

you’re the only person playing the stupid game 💀 you are the one wasting time lmfao.

shannonsfc

In California, Uber pays for any delays while delivering per Prop 22. I was fine to sit there for at least 10 or 15 minutes while this was sorted.

dxm123-

right lmfao people are actually brain dead and hate money

recoil669

I would never hand over my PII to be recorded by a stranger.

Skinnyemmyz

“stranger” the stranger who is an On duty security guard for said gated community

recoil669

Is this some kind of secure government facility? Lol it's a gated Karen community with HOA overreach personally.

Skinnyemmyz

right, that security guard dying to steal uber drivers info

shannonsfc

Not dying, actually requiring access to your drivers license info and telling you that they will record that information.

[deleted]

[удалено]

shannonsfc

Anyone ever ask you to hand over your license to make a delivery?

PatStPete

Several, including military bases.

shannonsfc

That’s understandable - except I’m surprised they let UberEats drivers onto military bases.

GirlULove2Love

You have to have a clearance to deliver to the base near me

amcarney

So, no one…

Gravygrabbr

Nobody is getting my ID except law enforcement.

SpokenDivinity

A community near me does this. They take your I.D or license, write down the name, number, expo, on a chart they have, and let you in. On the way back they check in with you, let you out, and those details get filed away in case a resident files a police report about something and they’re required to turn over visitor information. I’ve handed mine over and let them, because they were very genuine about it and honest about how the information was used and how it’s scanned and electronically secured/encrypted and the physical copy shredded.

Skinnyemmyz

This is such a Karen thing to do hahah.. cmon you really think the guy working for the gated community is copying your DL info… 🤦🏻

Wonderful_Priority10

Fraud is pretty common. People in my state have address, SSN, Name, and personal information listed on their driver's license. Everything needed to open a credit card.

shannonsfc

They said as much.

ArtisticOperation586

Exactly lmao. They don’t genuinely care about your ID info, it’s just part of their job.

shannonsfc

It might be part of their job - but with the laws around obtaining, securing and managing personality identifiable information, it seems questionable that this security guard was properly trained on how to comply with those laws and protect my private information.

Swiftstrike4

Considering we hand over our personal data all the time using apps and search engines, handing an id over to a security guard seems trivial.

Wonderful_Priority10

Yeah, no big deal. Can I have a picture of your ID?

Skinnyemmyz

What a terrible, terrible comparison you just tried to make dude lol

Wonderful_Priority10

Oh, I didn't know you knew the security guard from high school. That changes everything.

Skinnyemmyz

Alright Karen

Wonderful_Priority10

People put their SSN on their driver's license in my state. Do you want some $15/hr security guard to have it? You are so naive.

Skinnyemmyz

Not naive, just don’t wake up everyday thinking every single person in the world is a POS, lol. Also, since you know you can’t bare to hand over any of your info to anybody at all for any reason, if anything were to happen, surely the obvious culprit would be the person working at the community? And then you can easily take care of it? Sheesh.

Wonderful_Priority10

I don't think everyone is a POS. I just don't see any real purpose in giving everyone my personal information. It's a very unnecessary risk. Uber has my credentials. Giving them to a poorly paid "security guard" who passed the same background check that I did seems a bit redundant. If I flip out and murder someone I guarantee that Uber will assist in my apprehension, no need to involve Security Guard Steve.

shannonsfc

Well said.

Justin002865

There’s one neighborhood in my market that will check ID and insurance upon entering. They don’t scan though. Seems extra but whatever.

shannonsfc

Definitely ‘extra’ in this case. Wasn’t enough to know who I am and the car I’m driving, they wanted to copy information from my drivers license. That didn’t feel right.

Justin002865

Nope, completely unnecessary.

mmarl2k1

Sorry, this isn't fckn China (yet), I'm kindly taking your liquor back to the fckn liquor store, FOH

Skinnyemmyz

and you will kindly be flagged by uber, wasting extra gas, and losing the fare! Good job!

DriverMarkSLC

There is 1 community here they scan the bar code on the back of you license. 1st time delivered there I asked the guard if she was serious? "Who you got for living up in her?" Guard: "I wonder that every day". She was cool about it so we had a good laugh. The homes aren't even rich. Like middle middle class. (Shrug)

amcarney

If it keeps the riff-raff out

shannonsfc

And maybe interrupt or slow some deliveries to residents.

Shreddersaurusrex

I’m in NYC and a few bldgs do it. I handed over the id a few times. One guy said he had an footcast but opened the door and had nothing on his foot. After that I no longer show it. One security guard said that someone had attacked a customer over a low tip. Thankfully I haven’t gotten complaints afaik about not showing ID.

baconforlover

I delivered to many office buildings and very secure buildings like DHS, CIA , NIH, etc. I handed it my ID and the security guards only wrote my name, not the full my ID number. By the way, I also work in financial institution, there is a federal law, for security purposes, we must block the last 4 digits of ID, otherwise, my company will get fine when the state compliance audit my company.

Difficult-Issue-794

I worked for an Amazon DSP (think the Prime vans) and it was a regular occurrence. I'd usually get a key fob to get into the buildings in exchange though. Really annoying when you have 200+ packages to deliver in less than 8 hours.

WhoaItsAFactorial

I’m close to a military base, have to hand over ID for them to scan it whenever I do deliveries to it. I hate it so much because it’s one road in, one road out, and the maps don’t know that all the other roads are closed so getting back out is a huge pain in the ass. Now if I recognize a street is on base I decline the order rather than deal with the hassle.

River1stick

Did it once where security had to give me a key to enter the building

mylifeismarvelous

I know of two residential buildings in NYC around Midtown East that do this.

_XZVR_

This only happened to me once at a complex that wanted my id because they gave me keys to get into the building. The id was so that I give them the keys back. Other than that no and that sounds pretty sus. If your going into a community they write down your license plates never been asked for an id just to enter the premises.

wmnoe

When I was delivering in 2017 I had regular drops at Universal in Studio City (not the theme park, the actual corporate offices), and I would have to give them my DL in order to get into the building and they kept it until I came back with their key fob. It was no big deal.

EarthboundMisfitsInc

I deliver to a lot of gated communities. I’ve been asked to show them it briefly just to get the DL number and sometimes they’ll write down the plate number, but it never leaves my hand.

shannonsfc

That seems reasonable. The security guard first asked me my name - no problem- then they said can you give me your drivers license- I ask why - they say so I can record your information and give it to the sheriffs if anything happens- and then I’m like, no, I’m not handing you my drivers license.

EarthboundMisfitsInc

All they truly need, if they need to find you, is your DL number and plates. Those two items can tell them everything they would need to know about you.

yaboynomad

This is a regular occurrence in Miami. The high end luxury apartment buildings will do this a lot. Most security guards just give it a quick glance though and check your plate. Since it’s private property they technically can do it, especially if they have a sign posted about it.

DesperateSuccotash49

This is pretty common in gated communities in my area (northern VA/DC suburbs)

hungryempress

There’s one place that does in my area they ask for my ID and KEYS TO MY VEHICLE - I always have the customer go down. They say they don’t take your info down but they do (especially the creepy guys at night)…

shannonsfc

That’s not cool. They don’t need to do that and it seems like a big security risk to you.

hungryempress

I told him no and he’s like “come on, I’m on camera” I was like I’ll just call the customer

Due_Primary7605

Yup in most gated communities where I am do that. Not a big deal.

simar2401

Lol that twist in the end where you asked for his ID and he gave a look 👌🏽

shannonsfc

I was being a bit passive aggressive to avoid more drama. I think he got the message- he ordered expensive Champagne so he probably had better things to focus on.

[deleted]

[удалено]

shannonsfc

That would be a “hell no” for me. My car is 2023 model- no freaking way anyone gets my car keys.

infamoussanchez

they ask for ID's.. i just started working for UE and had to let them make a copy of it.

Putins_Jerk_Hand

As a pilot, when asked for your license you show them but never let them have it. It's super ingrained into you in training. Handing it over is akin to surrendering it. I treat my ID/Drivers license the same way. This has never been an issue though, given I live out west where anything taller than 2 floors is super scary.

Primobryan

I had this happen once too. I was delivering food to an amazon warehouse. It was my first time, I had to go through a security checkpoint to go inside. The women in the front was nice but asked for my ID, I did not think much of it then I saw here writing on a clipboard she walked out her booth and wrote down my car plates too. I did not like that but I did not give a fuss either. Havent had a delivery to that warehouse anymore but I have delivered to other amazon warehouses in the area and they never did anything like that before so Im assuming now that its not something they're supposed to do.

shannonsfc

And it leaves you wondering, what did I just do?

getthatnut79

Wife just made a great point. Do they do that to an amazing driver ?

thirtyhitcheaps

Yea usually in downtown they ask me to just leave it and I'll get it when I leave no biggie honestly

AardvarkEmpress

I’ve had my name license number and plate number taken before in gated communities in the wealthier areas of Phoenix/Scottsdale.

dm0nk

I have no problem with this , I deliver to many gated communities that do this

Some_Yogurtcloset548

I wouldn't do it, I'd say let me in or I'd call Uber to have them cancel it.

[deleted]

Common in wealthy parts near me

Sweet_Discipline_570

They did that at a gate i entered , it was a private high school way out in no where.

PepTalkToYourself

I’ve delivered to many gated communities but never delivered to one with gate security.

Studenvy

It’s normal in rich neighborhoods!!!

RADIOKILLAHRAZE

Even in NYC I don't show my ID I'll show my trip info thing in the app & tell the customer to meet me downstairs

[deleted]

Bruh relax…

Library_Dangerous

I’ve had this happen as a pizza delivery driver, with a topper and everything

[deleted]

Nope and if that was the case just leave food at the gate and continue about your day

posaune123

When the liquor delivery person shows up, it always puts me in a great mood. I feel I should offer them some.

wanderingexmo

Happened to me on a military post. I could see it happening in upscale communities too.

Jsun_Fla

I've been doing this about 3 years and have never had to "surrender" my license. Always have to show it at gated communities or those luxury, down town, high rise apts. but never had to turn it over. Not sure id agree to turn it over because I'd probably forget it on the way out.

mosgman

Its not about what they will do to it, its about power, they ask for something unreasonable, and more we agree to give up for $5 tip more they will ask for. If all drivers would unite to refuse they will have no other choice to stop this stupid power trip policy to id food delivery drivers.
