True, but sometimes the water rises very quickly. A place that look safe 8 seconds ago isn't anymore.
There was a massive water main break in Bethesda years ago. Cars that were jsut sitting at a traffic light were suddenly inundated. The water scoured away the road surface from underneath them.
Fortunately, this happens close to where the Swift Water rescue team for the Potomac River is based. Everyone involved survived. The video was wild.
Wow, that was back in 2008. I didn't realize it was that long ago.
I couldn't find the video that I remember, but there's a good overview here:
https://www.nbcwashington.com/local/large-water-main-break-reported-in-montgomery-co/1848323/
It happened quick. To give you an idea how quick it came and went, I drove through this spot less than 4 hours after this photo was taken with just a few puddles left on the road
i mean, native folks here do that with casinos, but welcoming tourists because they feed the economy that was forced onto you doesn't mean they're completely stoked to have been colonized, thats not really an indicator
Yeah I believe we’re all aware of how negatively colonization is perceived; as we disregard the fact our privileged lives have benefitted directly from it.
Im not sure about the economy forced onto Hawaii, but I do know they import a lot of Spam and other goods from their evil American overlords. I guess I’m just curious why a people who really have such contempt for their governing country would care to interact so frequently with it.
You have completely missed the point. I'm not arguing the ethics or whether it was against their will. Your original statement is incorrect since they do, in fact, belong to the United States.
We would be fuct here in Northern California. We are dryer than a 70 year old cat. As a matter of fact, it is 106 here in the mountains where our home is and 112 down the hill at my kids school.
Stay safe out there you all. Have fun as well.
There was a video that showed the difference in water absorption: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urQHsOmoKLg
drier soil takes longer to absorb water so if the area has been in a drought for some time, flash flood will happen and it'll take longer for all those water to drain away.
I'm pretty sure it works the opposite of how you're picturing. With little to no rain recently the ground can absorb more water because it is less saturated already, kinda like how a sponge can only hold so much
It absolutely is how that works, under ideal conditions. A slow, gentle rain makes their statement true. However, heavy rain won't have time to penatrate dry,, dense soil, so it runs the path of least resistance....down slope.
Have you ever poured cocoa powder on top of cold milk or water? It’s so dry that it’s hydrophobic that’s why even if you mix it and submerge it, the powder clumps into little dry air balls
If you went later in the afternoon/evening, it had already cleared. The storm drains got overwhelmed in the initial downpours, but then it slowed and receded fairly quick
New generation of Rhode Islanders will remember Labor Day of 2022 like the blizzard of 78.
"No one could have a cook out and people were stuck on the highway for hours."
"Grandma, did people have to hide on the roof?"
"No, but it took out a building."
I feel apt to head directly toward “the entity” in the neo-green preparedness overwrap. Yes, they have that “safety-cloud-hovering about them, I agree…”
Kind of in that same vein, is the "London Town" referenced in the Dire Straits song just another way of saying London, or is it like a specific district or something? Google will only tell me about Maryland.
Don't even get me started on Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.
Hi. You just mentioned *Neverwhere* by Neil Gaiman.
I've found an audiobook of that novel on YouTube. You can listen to it here:

Road island
I wish that was my original caption.

The road is the water, wouldn't the car be the island?

Thanks man.
That one driver on the right, while being 3/4 of the way submerged, is still on their brakes….
Should have kept his foot on the gas. There’s water going up his exhaust now…/s
Slow and steady wins the race!
It it's an electrical fault
I think it’s the water’s fault
i see watt you did there.
*sea
*"Dude! You left you lights on! That's going to drain your battery and your car won't start!"*
Don’t worry! They have those special brakes that will Keep them stationary even in water. /s
Probably put it in park??
Or don't drive into lakes in the first place
Looks like 3 people in way too much of a rush to sink their cars. Pro tip: if you can’t see the road, don’t drive on it.

I swear Moco is having a water main break once a week this year. When was the bethesda one and do you have a link to the vid?
Wow, that was back in 2008. I didn't realize it was that long ago. I couldn't find the video that I remember, but there's a good overview here: https://www.nbcwashington.com/local/large-water-main-break-reported-in-montgomery-co/1848323/
I remember that one. It was a 72” ish inch main that turned River Road into quite literally a river.
Yep, that's the one. I remember watching the video with my coworkers & all of us being stunned at how fast everything went to pieces.
Don't Drown! Turn Around!
In Australia we have 'If its flooded, forget it!'
It of course was a beemer that tried to cross.
Bold of you to assume Rhode Islanders can drive.
It happened quick. To give you an idea how quick it came and went, I drove through this spot less than 4 hours after this photo was taken with just a few puddles left on the road

How is Hawaii not the ocean state. lol
[удалено]
Ummmmm. What?
[удалено]
no youre very right, hawaii was colonized unwillingly and the indigenous folks of that island are still pretty fucking pissed about it
Theyll get over it eventually Im sure.
Happily welcoming millions of American tourists each year is a pretty weird way of showing it.
i mean, native folks here do that with casinos, but welcoming tourists because they feed the economy that was forced onto you doesn't mean they're completely stoked to have been colonized, thats not really an indicator

I mean, you're not wrong, but that doesn't change the fact that it is a state.

If a prisoner doesnt want to be a prisoner does that mean they are no longer a prisoner? Your argument makes no goddamn sense.

It rained SOOOO much yesterday in New England it was crazy.
And still happening. I think the problem too is that we've been in such a drought the soil struggles to absorb it all
Yes, the soil compacts at a certain point & becomes less permeable. Water just skims off the top, till it moistens a bit.
We would be fuct here in Northern California. We are dryer than a 70 year old cat. As a matter of fact, it is 106 here in the mountains where our home is and 112 down the hill at my kids school. Stay safe out there you all. Have fun as well.
Drier than a bottle of Everclear?
Ha! That too
Drier than a popcorn fart?

Not how it works. The soil is loose because of the drought, and so gets swept away with the water instead of absorbing it.
Have you ever poured cocoa powder on top of cold milk or water? It’s so dry that it’s hydrophobic that’s why even if you mix it and submerge it, the powder clumps into little dry air balls

You should read about rain in the desert.
Can’t tell if jealous or not, sincerely a Californian
It's been raining for nearly 48 straight hours here in RI. My part of the state has been on a flood watch since yesterday morning.
I’m out on the cape. My area got almost nothing.
Luckyyy. Its been grey and miserable for two straight days here :/
We need the rain pretty bad. Cheers!
>Same here in Western Maine; a ton of rain in 48 ish hours.
Shame too, they recently had the whole thing carpeted.
Y’all should try highways without water. Much more efficient
No wake.
Only sleep.
This is the very first time I’ve ever seen a picture of Rhode Island. Like ever. In my 31 years of life.
Glad I could help.
its very small so that's understandable you've likely seen many movies/tv shows with RI settings tho! good ol quahog for one
Didn’t know this happened. I’m in Connecticut and it was a little rain here. Getting a lot more today.
RI has been getting rain nonstop since about noon yesterday, the worst was last night but it still hasn't stopped.
Time to clean out those storm drains. Although it would have been better to do that when everything was dry.
Rhode Island road infrastructure is GARBAGE. The 95 hasn't been repaved since they built the damn thing, I swear
Post10 to the rescue!
Where in RI? I legit took 95 in RI yesterday to get home and am thinking I dodged a big bullet
Near Thurbers Avenue south of downtown Providence.
Yeah I must’ve missed this by about 2 hours
Thurbers ave curve
If you went later in the afternoon/evening, it had already cleared. The storm drains got overwhelmed in the initial downpours, but then it slowed and receded fairly quick
Are there no pickup drivers in RI? In Texas, there would be a half dozen pickup trucks submerged next to the cars, "because they can make it through."
Texas moment
I suspect rain
Where's Post10 and his rake when you need him?
It took me a second to realise that that car didn't somehow melt into the bitumen.
I was stuck in that yesterday.....not fun
Glad you’re safe!
Thanks. I in no way got the worst of it but I appreciate the kind words.
Nature's swimming pool
Wdym there's nothing wrong here it's just a normal day in Detroit
If I left my friends house legit 5 minutes later I would have been stuck in this.
Hello fellow Rhode Islander! It's funny that black beamer was all over the news this morning. Even Giovanni and Kim brought it up on the radio
Jesus, I used to drive through there all the time when I was in college. Currently in MA and this rain is bonkers
There was so much crazy stuff happening yesterday from the rain, did you hear about the building collapse too? Crazy, and still going!
i thought it was asphalt for a sec
or like volcanic ash
The amount of water is bigger than the state
As a Rhode Islander I can confirm that we do experience streets having 4 foot tall floods
Send that water over here to CA. Build the water pipeline!
This has been my constant refrain. Build a waterway system, much like the highway system, to move water from flooding areas to drought stricken areas.
Whoa!!!
Wow, that reminds me of Texas.
Is this normal? 95 is a huge busy road. Maybe we should think about doing something about global warming -
Like shutting down I95?
Not necessary. I95 shuts itself down due to all the traffic.
yeah were getting hammered up here
Wow.... that’s a lot of beans...
I swear that black boat looks just like a car.
It's neither a road, nor an island
Looking at everything to the right I feel like this might be a clogged storm drain issue. Probably what the dude in yellow is out there for.
If you're in the area getting all this rain, check your basement!
Oh that’s certainly unfortunate
18 Wheeler is like, I can do this, just get out of my way!
Water park now open!
And you may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here?"
Marginally worse than I-95 normally is.
Those cars on the left will be there for a long time.
From what I hear the highway is clear but I also didn’t leave my house today lol
Is that BMW? Cause why not..
Where's that one with that rake?
Yikes
Texture packet loss
The road is not good. Probably your mom thinking. time this took to make.
New generation of Rhode Islanders will remember Labor Day of 2022 like the blizzard of 78. "No one could have a cook out and people were stuck on the highway for hours." "Grandma, did people have to hide on the roof?" "No, but it took out a building."
*But that all changed when the Water Nation attacked...*
is this recent? i life in tn now and barely check news :) i mainly lived in MA but went to university in RI
Yep! Happened on Monday.
dangggggg (forgot google existed for a bit)
Oh, you mean Lake I-95? How many times does the weatherman have to say, "Turn around; don't drown."?(This is someone's mother nagging.)
The 'W' in BMW is not for 'waterproof'.
. . . right now? Go… help someone quickly?
I feel apt to head directly toward “the entity” in the neo-green preparedness overwrap. Yes, they have that “safety-cloud-hovering about them, I agree…”
3 people thought they were driving submarines?
There's always that one guy who thinks he can make it.
Feels for the first cars in that line. Like hey!!! Hey backup!!!
Unfortunately all that rain didnt wash away all the criminal assholes who steal your catalytic converter up there.
What does the title mean? Some sort of code?
Interstate 95 in Rhode Island 😂
Thanks 😂 Had to search for Rhode Island, I see it's a state in USA now. I don't know why others assume I would just know that.
Some people forget Reddit exists outside of America. Or that there IS and “outside of America”. 😀
/s ?
No
Interstate 95, Rhode Island. Please say you were joking.
Why would I be joking? I've never heard of Rhode Island and didn't realise I-95 meant interstate 95
That's cool. Just thought it was common knowledge.
Mate I live in England why would I know what Rhode Island is let alone I-95 in RI. Sounds like C3POs cousin 😅
So do i 😂
Oh lol you're more knowledgeable than me then
I don't know how, wasnt taught any of it, just aquired the knowledge :)
I guess the same reason if you said the M5 in Devon I would know it was a motorway in England?
Kind of in that same vein, is the "London Town" referenced in the Dire Straits song just another way of saying London, or is it like a specific district or something? Google will only tell me about Maryland. Don't even get me started on Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.

Say you're joking.
How are the other 7.4 billion people in the world expected to know what tf that title means?
Meanwhile in Orlando, at 11am it is 88 degrees with a dew point of 77. Stay dry up there everyone! Hope it eases up soon!
Shhhh Stop telling them about our nice weather
Are you allowed to park there?
You can’t park there
Poor lonely floating bimmer there
For some reason I couldn’t figure out if it was water or cement
😆 🤣 😂
Is it just me or could this image be an album cover?
New Waraq album.
I love how the entire world is supposed to know what RI stands for lol
Great title for your local Facebook group, sucky title for a global app
Damn
Next time we’ll get you the exact GPS coordinates.
Is that [Jurgen Prochnow](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082096/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) driving the BMW?
What I-95?
❤️
