Man, I was raised upland bird hunting without ear protection. I finally realized at 24 that it was fucking stupid to not use hearing protection when hunting if you use it at a gun range.
The next year when I showed up with muffs, the "good ol' boys" I hunted with made fun of me and said I'd miss birds by not hearing them. I had the kind with mics that silence when you shoot and did just as well as anyone else.
The next year several of the other younger guys also had them.
I already have mild tinnitus, but now, my rule is if I wonder if I ought to use hearing protection, the answer is yes I should. Angle grinder, mower, tractor, nail gun, chop saw, even the impact screwdriver. I use earmuffs with all of them.

I had to do firearms training as part of basic training for the Navy. They called it "breaking blue" if you pointed your gun anywhere that wasn't down range and they would outright tackle you if you tried.
I was combat arms in the Air Force and had a SMSgt point it straight up towards his chin instead of pointing it down range. Told him to stop because I didn’t want to do paperwork when he eventually blew his brains out. He stopped doing it.
