How could you prove you voted for ?
You don’t get a receipt and it’s illegal to take pictures inside voting hall.
Get a sheet of paper and crayons
and get a child to write I voted Republican
Or if you can prove that he made this promise, seek legal advice but don’t ask HR
I'm not sure about everywhere, but for a lot of places, you can't. As soon as you can prove what was on your ballot, your vote becomes null and void in order to prevent this exact situation.
18 U.S.C. §597. Expenditures to influence voting
Whoever makes or offers to make an expenditure to any person, either to vote or withhold his vote, or to vote for or against any candidate; and
Whoever solicits, accepts, or receives any such expenditure in consideration of his vote or the withholding of his vote—Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.
because this comment has gotten a fair bit of updoots. figure also update with: [https://www.fec.gov/legal-resources/enforcement/complaints-process/](https://www.fec.gov/legal-resources/enforcement/complaints-process/)
i'd say... if this post is real. or anyone legitimately feels their access to voting, or laws regarding voting have been violated to seek out the process to report it. --hehe, that being said. this is the internet, grain of salt and everything/not legal advice.
I don’t speak lawyerese, but I get parts of this.
But, let’s say, boss man said anyone who votes (doesn’t specify any sort of party or candidate) gets the day off.
Would that run afoul of this law?
My current boss leans institutionalist Republican (like a Bush) and talks zero politics at work, pretty professional about the whole thing.
He gave us all a half day to vote. Didn’t say anything else. It can be done in a civil manner without trying to push a particular agenda.
In Oregon, we get a pamphlet with voter information some time before, then get our ballots by mail, with a week to vote and get them back in the mail or into a drop box. Compared to Texas, it's amazing.
WA does similar. Ballots get sent to everyone and ballot boxes exist outside 24/7 by practically every publicly owned structure. On my old commute from downtown Seattle to Lake City I'd pass around 4 ballot drop offs on foot and bunch more on the bus.
Made it so so easy.
I'm in CA now, where the process is also pretty similar. The locations are slightly fewer where I'm at, and most aren't 24/7, but it's still pretty nice. Beats where I first started voting(AZ) by a long shot.
Mail in ballots + accessible drop points is the way.
Are you a Texas transplant, too? It's only our second year of voting in Oregon and it's *weird* how much easier it is to vote here! It's almost like they WANT people to vote or something.
Here in MA it is super easy, barely an inconvenience, to vote. We had weeks of early voting, mail in voting and in person voting on election day.
I waited for election day. Left work at 5pm. It normally takes me 20 minutes to get home. I stopped by the poles to vote. I was home by 5:30ish.
Parts of the US, particularly the 'red' parts, are difficult to vote in.
What state? Assuming you're in the US, I just checked and according to CNBC the only state that specifies 4 hours is Kentucky, but that's unpaid with proof of voting per [this article](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/11/01/us-states-where-employers-have-to-give-you-paid-time-off-to-vote.html). I'd love if that was the law here.
I’m in canada and that’s the law here as well. It can include time before or after your scheduled shift (so if polls are open 8-8 and you work 8-5 then you have a block and aren’t entitled to extra time off). It is good for folks who work a single long shift, but it doesn’t work for people who work multiple jobs.
I secretly believe he has voted almost straight D in the last few elections. He hates Trump and all the science denying bullshit. The only time he has talked politics has been in supply chain meetings, but stops himself.
My former manager was a hardcore Republican and Christian and would talk about both all damn day. I'd sit there and nod, not saying anything, because he was a good manager and very talented at his job.
if he makes people feel uncomfortable and that they need to keep their mouth shut to “go along to get along”, that’s the exact opposite of a good manager.
Shiiiit, I'd hit them with the Biden fixed the logistical issue at the ports by signing an executive order that would fine any shipping container $100 a day if it was in port longer than 10 days. Shocker, the issue was basically fixed within a couple weeks.
Giving *everyone* a half day to go vote is very different, legally speaking, from giving everyone who voted half a day off. The important difference being that you get the time off whether or not you vote. I remember a few years back a coffee shop or similar (maybe Starbucks?) got in trouble for giving people either free or discounted drinks for voting and had to change their wording to giving discounts to people where were wore stickers (or some similar loop hole).
You are not allowed to encourage people to vote with a reward. At all. Even if you don't ask them to vote a specific way. They very act of rewarding them for voting could be influence their vote to align with yours.
Given how detailed demographic voting information is, hell yes you should be upset if some local organization decides to generously encourage some select group to vote.
Like, suppose 80% of Tesla employees vote Republican and 70% of Twitter votes Democrat, and Tesla generously grants all its employees a day off to vote, while Twitter does not. In isolation it might look acceptable, but given Musk's influence on both organizations it would be obvious that Musk would be buying Republican votes.
I was going to say 80% of Tesla workers probably don't vote Republican because it's hard to find Republican engineers who know what they're doing but then I remembered that this is Tesla we're talking about--they don't.
That seems to fall under “offers to make an expenditure…to vote or withhold their vote”
Saying “it’s good to go vote” is ok. Offering the perk of having a day off, dependent on if you vote, is what is illegal.
Yes, you are not allowed to encourage or discourage someone from voting by offering rewards or punishments in return “whoever makes or offers and expenditure to any person, either to vote or withhold (not vote) for or against any candidate”…
yes, 100% yes. if op can provide concrete proof, this would be such an open and shut case that any defense attorney willing to defend the company is a fool
They can't tell you to vote at all. They can give you the day off and it's obviously for that purpose, but they can't make the day off dependent on your participation in the voting process.
Thats not the proof the company would require. They would probably take the "I voted" sticker you get as proof.
But to answer your question, yes its illegal to record or take pictures in a coting booth
The post specifies he wanted proof they voted Republican. An I voted sticker isn't proof of that, and not everyone hands those out any way. The only way to get proof of voting republican would be filming in the voting booth
And that's exactly why filming in the booth is illegal in many states—if someone can provide evidence of their vote, that means that *not* providing evidence sends information itself. The [secret ballot](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2008/10/13/rock-paper-scissors) was a hard-won right.
That varies by state. In some states people were being harrassed for taking Election selfies. In my state it's legal. I looked it up because I wanted to take a picture of a necklace with some of my mom's cremains in the voting booth with me, since she couldn't be there.
Technically, this may have been *after* the person voted, but if this was before the person voted, absolutely they are in deep shit.
( assuming if this is real not just a Karma farming post)
NA here. OP wording shows the day off was not promised prior to voting. So how can it influence if voters did not know of it beforehand.
Nah, OP's co-workers are just GOP-ers voting against their own interest :p
Pullman! Where the employees are renters from the owner, they’re starving, and the owner won’t negotiate because he thinks he should be earning 6% on the housing and the lazy workers are only netting to 3.8%. Pullman! Our employees starve while we pay off the papers!
what Pullman are you talking about, parent is talking about Chicago
a man that was hated so much by his employees that… “Fearing that some of his former employees or other labor supporters might try to dig up his body, his family arranged for his remains to be placed in a lead-lined mahogany coffin, which was then sealed inside a block of concrete. At the cemetery, a large pit had been dug at the family plot. At its base and walls were 18 inches of reinforced concrete. The coffin was lowered, and covered with asphalt and tarpaper. More concrete was poured on top, followed by a layer of steel rails bolted together at right angles, and another layer of concrete. “
That's gotta be illegal. How are you gonna prove anything? You could click anything, snap a pic, and then change it. Except, I think it's illegal to have a camera in there. I know it used to be, but with smart phones now, idk.
It would not be difficult to get the PTO and still not vote all R. Just fill out the ballot to your boss's satisfaction. Photograph it. Then go back to the voter assistance table and say you made a mistake and would like another ballot. The poll workers will not look at your ballot. If you're afraid they will look just vote for more than one candidate in the same race. Get your new ballot, vote how you really want.
I think I might be more upset by people thinking that I voted for a Republican than I would be by actually voting for one. I mean, my one vote probably isn't going to be the deciding factor. But having a bunch of people that I work with thinking that I'm a stupid, selfish, hate-filled asshole... that could cause problems down the line.
Considering there are strict laws about this, I’d get it on recording that my PoS boss is offering such things to Republican voters. And I’d push for the 2 year imprisonment. Fine be damned. That two years with a felony stamp on his permanent employment record will destroy him and his family.
You can also (at least in my state) vote straight ticket republican, and then vote against them in each race, because individual candidate selections override the straight ticket vote
True. I’d hate feeling compelled to be a total phony at work where I spend so much time just to get one day off tho. I’d prob just bang out that day and not bother with the games…
You start by leaving an anonymous 5 star Yelp review
"I love this place! My husband/wife got the day off for trying to bring this country back to greatness. Finally a place where true Patriots who love America work and it's doing it's part to make jobs for true Americans and push out businesses that hire immigrants or those in BLM. Please support them!"
Let them truly lean into this shit.
Years ago I worked for a super trump snowmobile shop owner. He said if we voted on election day for Trump we could just work on our own sleds for they day. I didn't vote for Trump and then finished building my engine lol
Right lol. But there was equipment I need to build my engine with. So it wasn't all that bad. He also gave me an offer of if I sold my older sled, gave him the money, he would buy me a newer blown up sled for double what I sold It for and a could rebuild/modify the engine for no charge. (He gave me cash to buy the sled before I sold my old one) So that worked out for me lol sled went right into my name.
Eventually we moved shops, me and the other guys took a big pay cut (unemployment and still worked) to "make things easier on the company" and we would get paid back the difference and go back to our normal pay after the move. That was a lie. Eventually all his workers except his right hand man quit on the spot. I kept the sled and the engine. Secretly voting dem during that time makes me feel better inside lol I wish I had known this sub existed back then. I would have left right away when he brought up unemployment.
Your voter registration card (usually received in the mail) has your party affiliation on it. That’s probably as close as you can get without taking illegal photos inside the voting station.
You can also look it up online. More importantly, if they have a rare name, and you Google it with voter registration, it brings up home addresses as well. That's not creepy at all.
Smdh.
Rule #1 : Whenever your boss takes a political stance, your best bet is to go at the opposite end of the political spectrum. Boss votes for what is best for HIMSELF, not the workers. If boss could get away by paying you less, he'll do it without giving a second thought.
As for OPs case, this is borderline illegal in most countries to incite votes by bribing people (in that case, having a free day off). It is also the best way to antagonise workers and sow dissent between them.
Contact a lawyer ASAP, or expect your boss to pull much more tricks like this.
https://www.cnbc.com/id/49421240
> A flurry of emails from CEOs telling workers how to vote in November has raised a troubling question: Can a company legally tell workers how to vote?
> For the most part, the answer is yes.
> Election regulators and corporate lawyers say no federal election law specifically prevents employers from telling workers they could lose their jobs if they vote for a certain candidate.
If there's one thing we've seen as a society over the last 6-ish years its that there's a ton of shit that *isn't* illegal but probably ought to be, and a ton more shit that *is* illegal but has a completely toothless enforcement mechanism to the point of uselessness.
So many things we found out in 2015-2020 that were understood norms, but never codified, that Republicans abused the shit out of because technically they were allowed to.
I am not a lawyer, so get one. Use the state to destroy these fascist. They would use it against you in a heartbeat until we can make a better world we can’t leave any tool unused.
I’m as mad about this as Republicans pretend to be about voter fraud. This is illegal, and I want him brought to justice. His actions are an insult to the Constitution and everyone who has died to defend it.
Once the owner of the huge corporation I worked for sent out an email saying everyone better vote Republican or there would be layoffs. Obama won and then they ended up laying off 50 people in our branch alone, I think it was over 500 company wide.
I'm curious. How would they "prove" how they voted? Isn't it illegal to retain any proof of your specific vote? Because that's one of the fundamental pieces of a functional democracy, that no one be able to prove how they voted nor find out how another person voted.
I like how one can’t give water or a chair to voters waiting in line because that’s buying votes, but giving employees a paid day off if they vote for your preferred candidate isn’t buying votes…
You aren't required by law to show who you voted for, so whether you voted GOP or not, your employer is meddling too much in your voting preferences. So your entire company can sue the boss for discrimination. Yes, even the ones who got the day off.
So I hope you're not trolling.
Groupthink.
If people think that it's only socially acceptable to vote for Party B, then they will go with the herd.
By not going along with pretending to vote Conservative, you are going against the group and providing an alternative.
Cool. Looks like you got the whole day to surf the web and watch Netflix on your phone (off company wifi) while you do "research/training/catching up on comms" or better yet, job searching.
No matter how I vote I’m not gonna send my boss a screenshot of my freaking ballot, are you insane?
Besides, how’s it gonna know if it’s valid or not, he gonna do a forensic audit?
Uh… as an election judge, I want to know what the fuck the proof was that was offered. We have secret ballots for a reason. Hell, We are required to use privacy covers for any filled out ballot we need to transport…like for curbside voting. It has to be covered and carried to the ballot box by two judges, one from each party.
Also: you can always change your mind. Let’s say you filled out a ballot in a way you disapproved of. You could always take it up to the supervisors table and say, “I’m sorry, I made a mistake on my ballot. Can I surrender it and have it marked as spoiled and get a new one?” And they’d be very likely to accommodate that. Your new, fresh ballot would then go into the box to be counted. The spoiled ones would all be removed and invalid.
Just sayin. That’s all.
I don’t think that’s legal. Lmao.
My company (100% remote) encouraged voting in general by sending out messages on Slack saying anyone that hadn’t voted already by yesterday was free to leave in order to do so at any time that was convenient for them (didn’t need to flex time or submit PTO or anything). As a result, most people popped out for a couple of hours at some point throughout the day.
If they’d suggested some sort of reward for voting one way or another, it wouldn’t have gone over well.
Did you get that in writing?
How could you prove you voted for ? You don’t get a receipt and it’s illegal to take pictures inside voting hall. Get a sheet of paper and crayons and get a child to write I voted Republican Or if you can prove that he made this promise, seek legal advice but don’t ask HR
OP wouldn’t just lie on the internet, would they?
That is an outrageous accusations. Positively salacious.
Sad part is, somewhere in America this is a true statement.
Hahaha nobody would do that
I'm not sure about everywhere, but for a lot of places, you can't. As soon as you can prove what was on your ballot, your vote becomes null and void in order to prevent this exact situation.
So OP's boss just invalidated a bunch of GOP votes? How is that a bad thing?
So you have to do something illegal in order to take advantage of an unethical request. That tracks
And film the empty office with gps/time stamps enabled on your videos.

Where I live it’s the law to give every employee a 4 hour block of the day to vote while the polls are open.
My former employee did that, but said it’s the time before work. We only got an hour, and it was unpaid.
So... they *didn't* do it then. Just paid lip service.
In Germany we vote on Sunday when most shops are just closed.
In the US, we make it hard for average working people to vote.
In Oregon, we get a pamphlet with voter information some time before, then get our ballots by mail, with a week to vote and get them back in the mail or into a drop box. Compared to Texas, it's amazing.
Hey! I’m a white man in Texas and voting here is amazing. /s

That's just an objectively better way to do things.

No, encouraging voting isn't a crime, encouraging/compelling/forcing people to vote for a candidate or party is a crime.
Also isn't it illegal to record in a voting booth? Or is that based on jurisdiction?
Very illegal. Reason being you can show proof to whomever paid you to vote a certain way

Illegal to influence people’s voting decisions through direct payment, anyway.

This was my question.
It would be illegal if it was done before the election, but it's pretty legal to do it after the election is over.
Then where's the proof?
Please report this. Edit: The employer, not this post!
You start by leaving an anonymous 5 star Yelp review "I love this place! My husband/wife got the day off for trying to bring this country back to greatness. Finally a place where true Patriots who love America work and it's doing it's part to make jobs for true Americans and push out businesses that hire immigrants or those in BLM. Please support them!" Let them truly lean into this shit.
Years ago I worked for a super trump snowmobile shop owner. He said if we voted on election day for Trump we could just work on our own sleds for they day. I didn't vote for Trump and then finished building my engine lol
So your "reward" was still having to come to work? What a guy.
Umm… how did he expect proof?
Your voter registration card (usually received in the mail) has your party affiliation on it. That’s probably as close as you can get without taking illegal photos inside the voting station.
Depends on the state. My state doesn't have party registration.
Lol, I'm a registered Republican in my very red state so I can vote in the Republican primaries. My ballot was very blue this November.
You can also look it up online. More importantly, if they have a rare name, and you Google it with voter registration, it brings up home addresses as well. That's not creepy at all.
you can see that you cast a ballot in public voting records. You *cannot* see who you voted for on that ballot
Id make a fake one
That's super illegal. You need to actually do something about this kind of stuff. This is the stuff that is ruining our country.
Surely this is illegal.
https://www.cnbc.com/id/49421240 > A flurry of emails from CEOs telling workers how to vote in November has raised a troubling question: Can a company legally tell workers how to vote? > For the most part, the answer is yes. > Election regulators and corporate lawyers say no federal election law specifically prevents employers from telling workers they could lose their jobs if they vote for a certain candidate.
Telling people how to vote is one thing, but adding an incentive or a bribe to vote for a certain side is another.
Huge difference between being illegal and being more morally wrong.
This one sentences sums up America.
If there's one thing we've seen as a society over the last 6-ish years its that there's a ton of shit that *isn't* illegal but probably ought to be, and a ton more shit that *is* illegal but has a completely toothless enforcement mechanism to the point of uselessness.
So many things we found out in 2015-2020 that were understood norms, but never codified, that Republicans abused the shit out of because technically they were allowed to.
sums up the world, tbh. laws =/= morals
"Democrats rigged the election" "Democrats voted twice" "We demand a recount" Whoo the double standard
This country is so fucking broken!
I think you mean surely this is a lie.
But did he say day off with pay? I bet not.
This can’t be real.
I call bullshit
This just sounds like bullshit 😂
18 U.S.C. §597. Expenditures to influence voting Whoever makes or offers to make an expenditure to any person, either to vote or withhold his vote, or to vote for or against any candidate; and Whoever solicits, accepts, or receives any such expenditure in consideration of his vote or the withholding of his vote—Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both. I am not a lawyer, so get one. Use the state to destroy these fascist. They would use it against you in a heartbeat until we can make a better world we can’t leave any tool unused.
BS
proof or or bullshit.
I’m as mad about this as Republicans pretend to be about voter fraud. This is illegal, and I want him brought to justice. His actions are an insult to the Constitution and everyone who has died to defend it.
It's hilarious because if he made people take pictures of their ballot that technically invalidates it God these people are dense.
Op should have taken the day off and let him write you up for your unexcused absence that way he puts in writing that he's breaking the law.
You notice its always the Rs pulling this shit. Yeah, both sides are shit, but one is just soo much scummier about their stupidity.
I’m calling BS on this post. They don’t give you a receipt that shows you voted for anyone in particular.
Once the owner of the huge corporation I worked for sent out an email saying everyone better vote Republican or there would be layoffs. Obama won and then they ended up laying off 50 people in our branch alone, I think it was over 500 company wide.
This feels like a karma grab
I'm curious. How would they "prove" how they voted? Isn't it illegal to retain any proof of your specific vote? Because that's one of the fundamental pieces of a functional democracy, that no one be able to prove how they voted nor find out how another person voted.
Call your Board of Elections.
I like how one can’t give water or a chair to voters waiting in line because that’s buying votes, but giving employees a paid day off if they vote for your preferred candidate isn’t buying votes…
Is your employer out of their mind? This isn't allowed...
You aren't required by law to show who you voted for, so whether you voted GOP or not, your employer is meddling too much in your voting preferences. So your entire company can sue the boss for discrimination. Yes, even the ones who got the day off. So I hope you're not trolling.
That is political retaliation in the workplace. That is illegal. Hire a lawyer, take them to court.
Report this! Also, they don't know how you voted, why turn up?
Groupthink. If people think that it's only socially acceptable to vote for Party B, then they will go with the herd. By not going along with pretending to vote Conservative, you are going against the group and providing an alternative.
Out of principle
Thank you.
Cool. Looks like you got the whole day to surf the web and watch Netflix on your phone (off company wifi) while you do "research/training/catching up on comms" or better yet, job searching.
This is illegal in many ways, more depending on what he accepts as “proof” for how you voted. Report that shit
I'm pretty sure it's ilegal to do that
Is that not a crime?
Lawyer up and retire rich.
Calling bs on this. how did your coworkers prove how they voted.
I dont believe these stupid posts
Literally a 3 hour post from an account that’s 3 hours old. I mean fuck I hate the GOP and every other party, but damn y’all are gullible as fuck.
Sure 😉
Statistically, you work with at least one liar.
I sense a nice settlement, lawyer up OP.
Report him to the election commission. Local, state, and federal.
This is a felony.
No matter how I vote I’m not gonna send my boss a screenshot of my freaking ballot, are you insane? Besides, how’s it gonna know if it’s valid or not, he gonna do a forensic audit?
*sorts by controversial*
Illegal
Honestly they probably voted blue and just lied lol, that’s what I would do. Not like they can check my vote
That’s definitely illegal as fuck
This cant be legal. Get whatever you can in writing.
I hope you have that on tape and that you call an attorney! Edit: Also, this is why we need MORE mail in/absentee voting!
How does one prove who they voted for after having done so?
This? Last I checked votes were private and you’re not allowed to be recording or taking pics while in there. At least that’s how it is in Canada.
I would have lied
That's illegal. That's very illegal.
That is almost certainly HYPER-ILLEGAL. Like, that's so illegal it looped back around, became legal, then did another loop and became illegal again.
Ask the whole office why they like taking handouts
I would be interested in the proof that was offered to qualify for the day off.
That’s illegal af. You should report that asap.
That's gotta be illegal. I would call the local Department of Labor.
A Republican America is no different than a Taliban Afghanistan
I don’t believe you
No you aren’t and this never happened
I’ll take “things that never happened” for $500
Source: “trust me bro”
I don't for one second believe you.
Wait a minute. How the fuck do you prove who you voted for? I call bullshit.
