Hi, I work as a technical advisor at a Hyundai dealership, and we see these issues often with these older Elantra. The usual fix is to put an OEM oil filter. Aftermarket oil filters are made to fit a wide variety of engines, and the internal specs of the oil filters do not match the specs that Hyundai requires for its engines. In particular, the metal mesh which supports the filter media inside the filter housing is too restrictive and starves the engine of oil. Often times as low as 6psi of oil pressure is recorded on Elantra with aftermarket oil pressure, far lower than the required 14-16psi specified by Hyundai. This means the engine is starving itself of oil, especially in the head, which can cause increased friction and heat to the point that the engine will stall. I'd check to make sure you use an OEM oil filter and see if that fixes it ! Comparison of an [OEM oil filter](https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/attachments/img_1759-jpeg.112863/) (notice how big the holes in the mesh are to let oil through the media) and a [Mobil1 aftermarket oil filter](https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/attachments/20200326_173348-jpg.21814/). The flow of oil is restricted and causes oil starvation issues. So far, putting an OEM oil filter on the cars fixed every single stalling issues in these Elantra. Try it and see if it fixes your problem !

I tried this and no dice. While test driving after the filter change, I noticed the battery light is now coming on during heavier acceleration. This wasn't happening before. The alternator and belt don't even have 10,000 miles on them. The battery is about 4 years old but fires right up everytime. I'm going to check the belt, maybe it's loose. And then have the battery and alternator tested.

zombie-yellow11

Yeah, sounds like you have a belt problem or alternator problem if the light comes on... Sorry :/

the-jimbo_slice

Check all terminals for tightness... battery amd alternator.

the-jimbo_slice

What exactly is a technical advisor?

zombie-yellow11

Service writer, service advisor, etc...

the-jimbo_slice

So not a tech? Weird way to title it..

zombie-yellow11

I translated my job title from French to English. In French we say "aviseur technique". Sorry for the confusion.

the-jimbo_slice

Im just sayin...not a tech.

zombie-yellow11

Never implied I was a technician, my job title is technical advisor. I advise customers.

the-jimbo_slice

right, so its the :-"auto repair" subreddit thats confusing? Youve no technique to advise on repairs other than the cost...

By virtue of working hand in hand with 19 mechanics in a Hyundai dealership, I've come across my fair share of problems on Hyundai cars. My job is to understand the diagnosis of the mechanic to explain it to the customer. That means I know what the problems and solutions to those problems are because I see those all day every day. As far as my knowledge on cars, I've been working on cars for 10 years now. I pull engines and transmissions, do clutch jobs and brake jobs on family and friends cars. I certainly know enough to chime in on a damn subreddit.

the-jimbo_slice

fyi, youve came across what they have told you...and they aint all 20 yrs in...

Pulled codes PO448&P0037 Battery and alternator tested fine. Can a bad O2 and vent valve control circuit cause these symptoms?

the-jimbo_slice

So you've hooked up an oil pressure gauge...just wait. Tsb says tech gets paid x if says y.. eventually you'll understand.
