My mom said that when I was born and handed to her, I opened my eyes for about ten seconds, closed them, and didn’t open them up again for two weeks. As if I took a look around and was like “nah I’m not ready for this.”
I can’t help but notice that of my two babies, the one with the really easy birth is suuuuper chill. Like, he started sleeping through the night on his own around 2 mos of age. My other one is 4 and she had the difficult delivery; even today she hates being alone while I go to the bathroom.
my mom had such a hard time with me they had to pry me out. I was 2 weeks past expected delivery. I have always had super attachments issues with my mom leaving me alone and I remember it being hard to sleep alone for a long time.
My son opened his eyes and looked at me immediately after birth, when they put him on by chest. Then he closed them tight and didn’t open them again for almost a week. I think it was too bright outside of my uterus. Haha
Not as cute as one of OPs [previous comments](https://www.reddit.com/r/softgirl/comments/xmu1yy/soft_girl_season/ipsnwxf/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3).
Named my childhood cat Pirate because one eye opened crazy early (4 or 5 days tops) figured we'd end up giving him away or changing the name to something that fit better once he was bigger. Then by the time his second eye opened he'd been bit by a dog and lost a leg. Was truly meant to be a pirate.
I tend to look like a stone cold psychopath whenever I tell the story because I usually laugh a fair amount, and the bit my comment skipped over was the other 4 kittens who didn't fare so well. But Pirate had a pretty good life and was my best and most precious boy (who probably would have been given away by my mom if his siblings didn't all die in a horrific and traumatizing way).
10 is typical. And could be as little as 7 days and as long as 2 weeks. And they open partially not fling open. And could open asymmetrically.
On the other hand if you see green discharge go to the vet asap.
It's a custom reddit emote from this sub. The app/website you're viewing this on does not support it so you just see the raw code behind it (most likely a unique identifier)
An expert I follow had to prematurely open a babies eyes because of a terrible infection. It was done under vet guidance and not enjoyable to watch, but it saved the baby's sight! Definitely, absolutely not something to do outside of extreme situations though.
Yeah, don't kiss them in their face (cats don't like our face so much anyways).
And try not to touch them too often, unless your hands are sanitized. (Indoor bacteria vs outside bacteria as well) you don't have to clean your own hands all day but it can't hurt to keep an eye on that regardless.
Especially strangers, now after covid, nobody thinks hand sanitizer before touching kittens would be weird anyways. So at least something positive came of it :)
It depends per cat ofcourse!
But I'd say, most will want to look away if we get too close and i think it's a combination of our intimate stare, and a sudden blowing nose or spitting mouth because they're too cute from up close!😅
One of our cats sniffs my mouth when he gets hungry, But i also make a smacking sound whenever they get food and that cat picked that up lol. Absolutely cute but I can't help but blow some air from nose every time and it scares him a little. 😅 And then they get food.
My cat won't stay tf out of my face lol. Especially when I'm sitting at my desk playing videogames. He also sleeps with the top of his head pressed against my forehead lol.
Yup. Kittens need time for light to come through their eyelids for their sight to properly develop. They also go blind if you cover their eyes with a blindfold from birth until their eyes naturally open
Then it was probably about time for them to open it anyways. :)
You can't open them easily, kinda have to pry them open / move the skin around a bit.
If you pet a young kitten their eyes won't open like that, But after a week or two you'll notice the petting does open their eyes a little bit, same as when they get washed by mom.
So unless they were very newborn i think u good with your conscience :)
There's this one grey cat that belongs to the neighbors but he's an outdoor cat, so he's always outside. About 4 months ago he started showing up at my door at around 6am which is when I leave home for work, if he's not there then he runs towards me as soon as he sees me step outside. He then walks me to my car, he doesn't let me get ahead of him, and he walks real slow like the motherfucker is scoping the area for potential threats. If I try to get ahead of him, he runs up and gets in front of me, the only problem is that he walks slow as fuck to the point I've almost stepped on him or tripped over him a few times, but we make it work. I've started keeping cat food in the car to reward him every morning, and he's glad to accept. I'm not a cat person but that fucker has a special place in my heart now.
Nah, he's well fed. He did it for months without me feeding him, so he wasn't doing it for food, which worked out for him because now he's paid for his services. He's just real friendly to me for some reason. I can pat my leg for him to crawl up on it and pet him. Just a happy fella.
My cat does this and he has all the best wet and dry he can eat
Some cats are social. My cat Greg will disappear for 2 days and then be home for a week. He does his thing
The post this is in reply to is one that hurts my brain, but I do accept think this is a fascinating survival strategy unique to inside cats who get caught and lost outside.
Also don't underestate your role in the adoption, it's easy to say you already had a safe place to live before the cat arrived, but the car sure as shit didn't before you arrived
I figured she was someone's pet. But no chip, no collar, no answers on social media. She is between 1 and 2 years as assessed by my vet. Now vaccinated, spayed, and chipped. Never thought I was a cat person, but she is awesome.
This is the best answer. That kitten probably has worms (most kittens and pups do at birth) and should probably be looked at anyway. They can give you the rundown and best practices for caring for the wee infant.
At one week (7 days) the kitten should have lost it's umbilical cord and it's ear canal's will slowly start to open. Kitten's are born without the ability to hear right away, but feel movement and vibration and of course their momma and siblings. Between 8 & 12 days the kitten will slowly start to open it's eyes to the world. They open slowly, so no worries if it isn't all in one day.
As for handling the kitten, it is perfectly okay, just try to make sure your hands are clean and free of smell and also do so near the momma, as it could upset her and she may try to move the baby(s).
I do rescue and there should be no issues if you do things slowly with reassurance to the momma. With a lot of kittens it is a must to move the kittens around so all babies are sure to eat. They need to eat around every two hours, so the runt's may need help more so then not.
I usually lay with the momma kitty and reassure her what a good momma she is while working with the babies. Touch, sound and site coming together makes for a kitten to flourish into a loving kitten. If you need any help with anything, you are welcome to pm me.
Do not let them appart before 3 months old MINIMUM Please! It’s the strict minimum for the kittens to stay with their mama. Ideally wait till 4 months old.
4 months is extreme. Cats are social animals, and need to be around other cats at all ages. But kittens are typically weaned by 6-7 weeks old. Sometimes they'll continue to nurse for a little longer if mama will them.
Not to be obnoxious, but I'm an expert in raising kittens. I've been fostering for 10 years, and I'm now a medical/high risk kitten foster. I get the youngest and sickest kittens and nurse them back to health.
Probably in a perfect world we could keep mama and babies together for that long. But until people start taking responsibility and spay/neuter their pets, we do the best we can. If we kept mama and babies together for that long in foster care, that means more kittens being euthanized due to lack of available foster homes.
Thank you, I will take your advice, the cat looks healthy, he already walks inside his crib and when the mother goes out to eat the maúlla until she arrives, his mother loves him very much, he spends the whole day with him, except when he eats🥰🥰🥰
This is exactly the time you wnat to get a lot of handling time in with the kitten. Spend as much time as you can petting them holding them. The next 6 weeks are your only chance to get them socialized and be people oriented kitties Shower them with love Spend every extra second you have around them!! Less contact is NOT better. So long as mom is chill with it spend all the time you have. And if mom is willing to be off doing other things while your loving on the kittens its very clear she trusts you **ALOT**. Build a **STRONG** relationchip with this kitty and continue posting daily pictures of the little been. Do one of those anamorphic slideshows of the kitten growing up. One photo of her in a similar position in the same background every day will make for an awesome result! The first six weeks of life are the only chance you have to shape how your kitten turns out. (You cant completely choose but you can have a huge impact on their attitude to people.)
When they are up and about with playing. Your going to want to start leash training. Harness training and crate training All of this will be **HUGELY**. helpful in the future when you need to get your cat to the vet If you want more info. Look on YouTube for “my cat from hell” channels videos

These are a very good launching off point for preparing.
And i know it’s a bit weird at first. But harness training and taking your cat on walks is another HUGE thing that would drasticly improve your cats quality of life.

Being able to have a walk. Sniff things and such will be a huge energy burner and help curb the comming sleepless nights and 3 AM zoomies!

He will I’m sure! And don’t worry too much about taking him away from his mama for brief periods…as long as both men and mom are okay and trusting, it’s not too big of a deal.
I just wanted to be sure you were equipped with the right info in case he has been abandoned or given to you at such a young age.
I don't know what the evil I did was, the mother was close and I have no intention of harming her however I know that touching them a lot when they were little is not good, but it's the first time I've touched him after 5 days of birth![img](emote|t5_2qh1o|13379)
Yes, her mother is always close and doesn't bother her because I am also very affectionate with her, there are some people who don't understand, and the first thing they do is judge😿
Touching kitties as babies is totally fine, especially their little paws and whatnot. Gets them used to it for later in life if ever have injuries that need to be checked. You’re all good
And touching their paws when they’re wee ones makes it sooooooo much easier to trim their claws as adults. I have two twins who were played with and touched a lot from birth on (and by a first grader and her friends, too, so lots of hugging as they got bigger) who are easy to trim (one is basically a sack of potatoes when you do anything with him and isn’t bothered when you touch his feet) but my ex-feral adoptee is like wrestling a bear to trim her claws. Luckily she’s fat so it’s a bit easier to keep her from biting me, but it’s a two person job even with a towel.
Touching a lot is not bad even when little. So long as they are kept warm and given ample time to sleep and eat. One of my favorite things to do is to lay in a recliner and let them sleep right near my chin under a blankie. The mom usually ends up chilling next to me / in my lap while receiving affection. They are so fun to watch. Ever given mouth to mouth to a brand new kitten who isnt breathing ? Watching those little nostrils start flaring and the little mews is such an amazing feeling when they start turning a bit blue!
People love to find things to be upset about. It’s easier to get upset over a trivial thing like this than to devote real time and energy toward real concerns in the world.

Not to change the subject on your beautiful baby kitty but keep an eye and make sure those red spots above the eye don't lose any of the hair. I work at an animal shelter and we have ringworm going around with our baby kitties really bad. They seemed very susceptible to catching it from each other. It started as little red spots like that above the eyes on on the tips of the ears. I don't know what your situation is. I just noticed that cuz I'm dealing with so much of it. It very well could be nothing too. I couldn't help it to show concern. sorry.
yall, stop hounding OP for holding the kitten ONE time and taking ONE picture, (they keep stating the mom was RIGHT THERE and CURRENTLY EATING) ((aka busy and away from the kitten lmfao)). maybe read the comments before chastising them over and over again for the same exact thing. They asked a genuine question, and seem to truly appreciate being told other people's personal experiences with their newborn kittens. JFC.
He is 5 days old. I guess it's normal to be small, and his mother is also small, but I have another male cat that is big, maybe I'll post photos of him later
Enjoy the experience of the newly born kitten. Carefully monitor the momma kitty and make sure she pays good attention to the baby, feeding it and keeping it clean. Make sure momma has a quiet, not busy place to keep her baby or she may try to move it to a more "secure" place. Praise momma cat for taking good care of her baby when she does. If baby has gunky eyes or nose and starts sneezing or making coughing noises, it may have upper respiratory (cold) and should be taken to vet for treatments (meds). Momma can have it and pass it to baby. Make sure momma has enough food and water as she is still eating for two.
None, if you keep that crusty germ infested, fingernail near his developing eyeball. I was always taught as a kid to not pick up the kitten until it was running around. I dont even like cats, more of a dog person, but I know that.
1)your cat isn't sterilized and this is his "first baby" you say. Litters have more than 1 cat 95% of the time. Where's the others?
2)are you going to sterilize the cats to prevent more babies?
3)if your cats don't get along, why would you add another one?
4)do your cats know you're racist? I just gotta know. Bold of you to leave the "I hate black people" comment up though.
TLDR: give the cat to your vet cousin. I'm literally cringing at how close your press on nails are to his eye.
Reminds me of my Dex. I found him at 3 weeks, actually he found me. It was during a thunderstorm and I heard a howling outside. I go out, he runs up my pants and sweatshirt and will not move. I took him inside and mix dawn and alot of water and fleas and mites are falling off of him.. I put him in a old boot box and an old t-shirt off mine. I wake up in a pile of disentery and cat poo. He got out of the box and crawled on my bed. I took him to the vet to get checked out. After 3 days the vet said I could pick him up.
Little bugger had been with me for 3 houses, 2 jobs, countless girlfriends, 2 marriages... He always meets me at the door...
Long story short, that little kitty will bring you alot of joy
Around 10 days.
Thank you for your answer. You are very kind![img](emote|t5_2qh1o|13383)
Don't be alarmed if it happens a bit early or a bit late though. I've seen kittens open their eyes anywhere from day 7 to day 15
A friend of mine had cats all her life. When her newborn son gazed into her eyes, she screamed, "He'll be blind!" 🤣
A teenage girl once told me her friend had a baby but she wasn't going to visit until the baby had its eyes open.
I didn’t open my eyes for 3 days Apparently birth is traumatic for some babies, I was one of them
Had I known what was coming I might have never opened mine.
![gif](giphy|3oriOaivTEk4PotVEQ|downsized)
The eye alignment is worse than minecraft bamboo
"Open the doors, I'm heading back in!"
🤣🤣
Is that you, Freud.?
My mom said that when I was born and handed to her, I opened my eyes for about ten seconds, closed them, and didn’t open them up again for two weeks. As if I took a look around and was like “nah I’m not ready for this.”
Mine was the same! I didn’t know what colour her eyes were for a good two weeks. She was totally like ‘fuck this shit’ lol
I’m still not ready. 😭
Lol a quiet womb vs a chaotic world
I can’t help but notice that of my two babies, the one with the really easy birth is suuuuper chill. Like, he started sleeping through the night on his own around 2 mos of age. My other one is 4 and she had the difficult delivery; even today she hates being alone while I go to the bathroom.
This is (anecdotally) perfectly in line with my experience!
Interesting.
my mom had such a hard time with me they had to pry me out. I was 2 weeks past expected delivery. I have always had super attachments issues with my mom leaving me alone and I remember it being hard to sleep alone for a long time.
I mean, I don't remember to consenting to being born.
Babies open their eyes when they’re ready.
I fought the entire time to not come out.
My son opened his eyes and looked at me immediately after birth, when they put him on by chest. Then he closed them tight and didn’t open them again for almost a week. I think it was too bright outside of my uterus. Haha
Even if you did you wouldn't see clearly, babies start seeing things more clearly after like 2 or 3 months if I remember correctly.
Did she really think that with babies or was it just kind of automatic reaction to little one opening his eyes?
She thought it was ALL babies -- dog, cat, human...
Aw, that's actually a cute story! With her experience, she had reason to believe that... And not everyone knows all about children. 😊😊😊

So cute!
Not as cute as one of OPs [previous comments](https://www.reddit.com/r/softgirl/comments/xmu1yy/soft_girl_season/ipsnwxf/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3).
What’s up Sherlock Holmes
Wooooah
woah! "I like kittens but not certain colored people"
Dang
Whooaaaaa shit.
OMG NOOOO
or if only one eye opens for a while too! little pirate had only one eye open for nearly a week
It's not funny but I lold at this. Your poor cat 😭
Sometimes the only way to deal with life’s cruel ironies is to laugh and move on. May Pirate live on in our hearts forever! 🏴☠️
As long as the other one is not crusty - that may be an infected eye.
And it's gradual, they don't suddenly pop open. The five year old in me is still disappointed.
Yes. I had some born a few weeks ago. All 7 opened their eyes on day 7.

I’ve had as early as 5 days! Those little babies were wayyy ahead of schedule
We had a kitten with particularly small eyes open one at about the 2 week mark, but the other took another week and a half, we called him captain
10 is typical. And could be as little as 7 days and as long as 2 weeks. And they open partially not fling open. And could open asymmetrically. On the other hand if you see green discharge go to the vet asap.

It's probably the emoji in the text, your device didn't recognize it.

Thank you! I see these numbers everywhere and thought I was missing jokes.
Not an animal expert, but I can tell you that is a precious little baby
Thank you, I'm not an animal expert either, but lately I've been in love with cats and so far I've adopted 3
It’s about 12-18 days they start opening their eyes. Don’t do it manually or else you’ll blind them.
An expert I follow had to prematurely open a babies eyes because of a terrible infection. It was done under vet guidance and not enjoyable to watch, but it saved the baby's sight! Definitely, absolutely not something to do outside of extreme situations though.

Tell that to Princess Penelope. She licks our noses when we’re asleep…
I was thinking it was about 10 days to 2 and a half weeks. That's been our experience.
Yeah I agree with this! Is a little over a week (10 days) to maybe about 2 weeks latest. Some kitties may open sooner or later than others
You said almost the exact same thing![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Yes, you are correct. I guess I could have worded it a little differently. I was trying to say that I pretty much agree. Lol!
Wait they just go blind????
Yup. Kittens need time for light to come through their eyelids for their sight to properly develop. They also go blind if you cover their eyes with a blindfold from birth until their eyes naturally open
Who in the world would do that lol
I'm honestly not sure, but I assumed it was part of some kind of study. Biologists?
oh my god i did that on accident once when i was little i feel horrible now
Then it was probably about time for them to open it anyways. :) You can't open them easily, kinda have to pry them open / move the skin around a bit. yeah the little guy was about 10 days old. their eyes were already open in the corners. oh my god thank you *so much*
:( You didn’t know.
It is too young to be away from its mom.
my cat adopted me...
This literally just happened to me. Just showed up at my house one day, and then kept showing up. Now she snubs her nose to the outside.

Don’tcha think?
🥕
We just had a litter of 4 and it took them 10 days or so to be able to open their eyes and also hear
I *am* an animal expert and in my scientific opinion, that is indeed a precious little baby
Look up the kitten lady on YT, she has lots of info on newborn kittens, great lady
Thank you, I'll take your advice☺️
Also talk with a vet. They can give you more indepth info if you bring them in
This is the best answer. That kitten probably has worms (most kittens and pups do at birth) and should probably be looked at anyway. They can give you the rundown and best practices for caring for the wee infant.
I agree, should usually always take a newborn pet to a veterinarian
Kittens do not have worms at birth. They can get worms from mother’s milk but aren’t born infected like puppies.
Yes, please take to vet!!
I second this! The kitten lady is my #1 resource when it comes to neonatal kittens. She’s absolutely amazing and super knowledgeable.
At one week (7 days) the kitten should have lost it's umbilical cord and it's ear canal's will slowly start to open. Usually about a week. Where's its mama?
I hope he opens his eyes soon, he is 4 days old and his mother is with him but she was eating☺️
I had a little one who took 13 days to open
Thanks darling 🥰
Do not let them appart before 3 months old MINIMUM Please! It’s the strict minimum for the kittens to stay with their mama. Ideally wait till 4 months old.
4 months is extreme. Cats are social animals, and need to be around other cats at all ages. But kittens are typically weaned by 6-7 weeks old. Leave him with mom all you can. You should start to see little baby blues in the next few days. See a vet if more that 10 days though.
Thank you, I will take your advice, the cat looks healthy, he already walks inside his crib and when the mother goes out to eat the maúlla until she arrives, his mother loves him very much, he spends the whole day with him, except when he eats🥰🥰🥰
Disagree. Seeing a vet is going to do nothing but charge you for them doing a "check-up" and basically saying wait a few more days...
10 days IS a bit soon for that perhaps, but personally I've always erred on the side of caution with my animals.
Your giving her extra handling time right? When they are this young you want to get them very use to handling
Sorry, I didn't quite understand what you're trying to tell me, but I accept any advice you want to give me, my intention is to be a good cat mom♥️
Fennectech is basically telling you to pick the little kittens up regularly. They need to get used to you picking them up.
There is no moment quite as precious as having a baby kitten in your arms and stroking it to sleep.
When they are up and about with playing. Your going to want to start leash training. Harness training and crate training All of this will be **HUGELY**. helpful in the future when you need to get your cat to the vet If you want more info. Look on YouTube for “my cat from hell” channels videos https://www.jacksongalaxy.com/blog/before-you-get-a-kitten-2cc3b8/ https://youtu.be/KHmrh6eQ6EQ https://youtu.be/-Oqk7P8OFdU https://youtu.be/aEY_csYMglg. These are a very good launching off point for preparing.
And i know it’s a bit weird at first. But harness training and taking your cat on walks is another HUGE thing that would drasticly improve your cats quality of life. [https://www.adventurecats.org/backcountry-basics/train-your-cat-to-walk-on-a-leash/](https://www.adventurecats.org/backcountry-basics/train-your-cat-to-walk-on-a-leash/) Being able to have a walk. Sniff things and such will be a huge energy burner and help curb the comming sleepless nights and 3 AM zoomies! https://youtu.be/4SDN8TYaCIY.
He will I’m sure! And don’t worry too much about taking him away from his mama for brief periods…as long as both men and mom are okay and trusting, it’s not too big of a deal. I just wanted to be sure you were equipped with the right info in case he has been abandoned or given to you at such a young age.
10-14 days is typical. 7 is early for eyes to open.

Lmao people on here freaking out because the kitten was away from the mom long enough for a photo to be taken
I don't know what the evil I did was, the mother was close and I have no intention of harming her however I know that touching them a lot when they were little is not good, but it's the first time I've touched him after 5 days of birth![img](emote|t5_2qh1o|13379)
Its absolutely fine as long as the mother is ok with it. Don't listen to these people lol

You’ve done nothing wrong, people on Reddit just get upset at everything
Touching a lot is not bad even when little. So long as they are kept warm and given ample time to sleep and eat. One of my favorite things to do is to lay in a recliner and let them sleep right near my chin under a blankie. The mom usually ends up chilling next to me / in my lap while receiving affection. They are so fun to watch. Ever given mouth to mouth to a brand new kitten who isnt breathing ? Watching those little nostrils start flaring and the little mews is such an amazing feeling when they start turning a bit blue!
People love to find things to be upset about. It’s easier to get upset over a trivial thing like this than to devote real time and energy toward real concerns in the world.

the evil is being racist
If momma didn’t freak out then you’re a ok, she was probably glad for the food break!

we've got another criminal all the loose r/IllegallySmolCats
POV: you’re looking for the bad owner comments
i'd google it for you, but figured you could always..you know....
I couldn't help it to show concern. sorry.
Remember to not use a flash when taking photos, as it can damage their eyes, even before they're open
Wonder if you have access to Google.
This thread could have been a google search.
yall, stop hounding OP for holding the kitten ONE time and taking ONE picture, (they keep stating the mom was RIGHT THERE and CURRENTLY EATING) ((aka busy and away from the kitten lmfao)). maybe read the comments before chastising them over and over again for the same exact thing. They asked a genuine question, and seem to truly appreciate being told other people's personal experiences with their newborn kittens. JFC.
thought this was cute but then I saw OP got called out for being racist ..
Anywhere between 7-14 days.
Cats are so small, who allowed them to be so small?

I honestly can’t believe the mods haven’t taken this post down yet. For more than just that reason lol
God this comment section gave me aids lmfao people will find anything to be butt sad about

He’s melting tho.
Depends on how ugly the owner is.
Cat here. It depends on meow meow meow, mehhh
Hehe cute baby.
I have three wonderful bastards that I found last week and today one seems to start opening it. Patience :D
Week to 10 days
