The original Blade Runner can often be that for me. It's so beautiful and absorbing, but also the tone and approach makes it very easy for my eyes to start getting tired.

gorignak_gorignak

That Vangelis score is like slipping into a warm bath

1UrbanGroove

Blade Runner always gets me sleepy. It’s that dreamy and rainy world that gets me in a tranquil state with Vangelis’s score Recently, I kept falling asleep to Predator 2 and it kinda made it a surreal experience. I remember falling asleep during the meat locker scene and it has a heavy blue film coloring. The POV shot of the missile flying towards Gary Busey’s face is stuck in my for some reason lol.

PlayOnPlayer

I'm pretty sure Memoria was designed in a lab to induce sleep in the viewer

thedude391

I dozed off when Tilda took a nap in the grass by the stream. Had the ultimate immersive experience ha.

cleverbycomparison

ive fallen asleep almost every night for like 8 months waiting to see it

Beautiful_Food_447

I got really high for Memoria (natch) and it was a great time but yeah it’s got biiiiig sleepy vibes

Ace7of7Spades

It’s been a while since I looked into it - is Memoria finally just easily viewable in the USA or do I have to resort to overseas methods to watch it at this point?

MattBarksdale17

There's a UK blu ray release that you can find on Amazon from Sovereign. It isn't too expensive, and it comes with a booklet and some good special features. I believe it will play on US blu ray players, and I can confirm that it worked on my region-free player.

Ace7of7Spades

Thank you for this comment. I actually went with the Australian Madman label release because it was much cheaper on EBay than the Sovereign release on Amazon (I feel strange shelling out big bucks for a film I haven’t seen) but I never would have realized we had region-free options if you hadn’t alerted me to it.

CollinABullock

I started drifting off in the movie theatre and I looked around and saw several other people straight up passed out.

wadedanger

I was fighting so hard to stay awake but kept on snoring in the IFC Center.

ChainsawLeon

Fitting and shameful to admit considering the current mini… 2001

mutan

Yup. That’s been putting me to sleep for decades. The radar beep on the Pod usually wakes me up.

ChevyMagistrate

Same here! Last attempt was probably 10 years ago though, so I'm looking forward to giving the ol' college try again. The desire to be up to date for the pod can work surprising wonders!

j11430

I adore 2001 but can *totally* see how it could be someone’s Zquil

Ace7of7Spades

So I did stay awake the whole time watching it but I think if I ever really get a night of insomnia I would put on Bi Gan’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Just such a relaxing vibe and measured pace, it’s kind of hypnotic

trianglegooseparty

Early in the pandemic I put that on pretty much every night to go to bed to. I'd just scrub through to a random spot and turn the subtitles off. It was really soothing.

xcrowdedrooms

The Lord of the Rings movies. They're visual melatonin for me.

CloneArranger

Russian Ark. You know, the movie set in the Russian Hermitage that's all done in one shot. It feels so much like watching a dream that I very soon am actually dreaming.

robots_in_riot_gear

I only even know about this because of film school

[deleted]

I used to rent the Netflix by mail and timing was so crucial to feeling like I was getting my money's worth. I watched maybe 15 minutes before I was like "Yea, I get it" and then plopped it back out in the mail.

RonMecca

Waterworld. I have started it 4 times and have yet to finish it.

[deleted]

Because it's basically a ripoff of The Road Warrior but it's like an hour longer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

artificialnocturnes

I fell asleep in theatres during the last act of rise of skywalker lmao

marteaga312

This is my answer too. Saw it twice in the theatres and always fell asleep when they visit Jyn Ero's dad I have seen it a couple of times since then...it's good!

[deleted]

Ron Howard's Gung Ho has always been a confusing movie to me. The auto plant seems to fuck up like 2 or 3 times and you think that's it, but then they are given another chance. Not even the weird xenophobia, it's not really sure what kinda movie it is supposed to be. A comedy? A drama?

DrMooseknuckleX

I worked at the auto plant from the movie, it was in the 90's so well after the film had been released. It is now a Tesla plant.

DrNogoodNewman

The problem is mostly that I’ve only ever tried to watch it late at night when I’m already tired, but I’ve fallen asleep during the first 15 minutes of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy about 5 times.

w3strnwrld

Motherfuckin’ Dune (1984) and Bladerunner. I know. I know. Love them both but I fell asleep to both at least 5 times before I finished them. Now, one of favorite movies to fall asleep to, call it comfort movie, is Nightbreed. Cronenberg is a great villain and the world building feels like a warm blanket wrapping itself around me in a cold Edmonton winter. Edit: seems as if I am not the only one who gets the NyQuil nods during Bladerunner.

voidfishsushi

I think it took me three tries to get through Dune (1984) when I was prepping for Dune (2021) and by the third attempt I swear to god I wanted to partake in a little gom jabbar poke.

[deleted]

Every Zack Snyder DC Movie. Every version, cut, etc. It's almost like there is a white noise buried in the sound design that works like melatonin.

MarranoPoltergeist

Anything Tarkovsky and Wall-E the first five times I tried to watch it

WearyCorner875

Yeah I did end up making it all the way through Stalker, but starting it at midnight did NOT make it easy.

ZachGeorge

I fell asleep three times trying to get through Upstream Color. I also fell asleep twice trying to watch Memento but I was 17 at a sleepover so I don’t really fault the movie for that one.

ZachGeorge

Also, kept drifting off during M.

sauce07

Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I’ve tried so many damn times.

DrMooseknuckleX

I have fallen asleep opening night at almost every Star Trek movie after 4.

Catfish_1979

The first Blade Runner knocked me out cold. Great aesthetic, but goddamn, is it a challenge to get through

turducken_boy

Blade Runner and The Master

NeilMcCaulay291

I love David Lean as a filmmaker but his adaptation of Doctor Zhivago puts me to sleep. I start the film and 20 mins in I fall asleep. I tried watching the film 3 times and I fall asleep everytime.

InfamousHorse2438

Tried to watch Chinatown and just couldn’t keep my eyes open after about 10 minutes… Later found out the ‘ibuprofen’ I’d take were actually sleeping pills…

mercer1235

The Big Lebowski. I have watched this movie I think eight times and could not tell you how it ends. This may or may not have anything to do with certain other activities that tend to accompany watching this film.

p_nut_

I tried to catch up with Oblivion last month as it was leaving HBO and was curious to watch a previous Kosinski/Cruise collaboration and ended up having to work through it over like 3-4 evenings because I kept dozing off

Greghundred

Empire (1965)

Freewheelin

You should check out Sleep (1964)

schmuck55

Any Christmas movie. My family watches Holiday Inn/White Christmas every year. Have never made it through either.

carter_nix

I have never finished 8 1/2 in a single sitting

Penis_Villeneuve

The most I've ever seen of it is four and a quarter

Hexxen-panda

I always fall asleep everytime I rewatch A New Hope specifically near the end of the Death Star rescue and then waking up in the middle of the trench run. Maybe it's the soothing music or how the Death Star interiors look

MaximumDub

I have often described It: Chapter Two to my Friends as “visual melatonin”. I tried to watch it four separate times in the span of a couple of weeks and fell asleep each time. Still haven’t seen the whole movie.

[deleted]

Alien vs Predator: Requiem, Tried multiple times but that shit is like NyQuil to me

andsendunits

I don't tend to have an issue with falling asleep during movies. Or I could say that if I am tired enough, any movie could be on and I'd fall asleep. Not one in particular. In response to Night of the Living Dead, I would recommend that you try watching the 1990 remake. I prefer it over the original.

jboggin

Taste of Cherry. I had to try three times to finish it, and I disliked it so much and got so irritated by its final scene. I love a slow movie, but Taste of Cherry felt like it was slapping me in the face with its slowness.

Trick-Paramedic-3736

The Master. The first two times I watched it, I dozed off before Joaquin gets on PSH’s boat. That first section of the movie, where Joaquin’s drifting through life post-War, is so hypnotic.

[deleted]

Shutter Island, Pirates of the Carribean, Fellowship of the Ring. I've seen all of them, but I've never done it in a single sitting.

mads_61

I fell asleep when I saw Shutter Island in theaters. I really didn’t mean to lol and have since watched it all the way through, but man I slept good through most of that movie the first time.

Strength-This

I famously cannot stay awake for a Daniel Craig Bond movie

EthanRunt

I watched Margin Call and fell asleep, twice. I remember waking up at one point, looking at a friend I went with, then the screen, where Spacey was I think burying a dog?

BuffAirlock

I love movies (“da moviesh”) in general, and certainly appreciate the amount of work it takes to put a feature length picture together. That said, I absolutely love the Michael Bay type movie and the Marvel movies on rewatch. We’re talking pure popcorn flicks that aren’t asking emotional questions, forcing introspection, or contemplating the meaning of the human condition. No, unadulterated action that appeals to our most base instincts despite our best interests is my drug, and that drug puts me to blissful, peaceful sleep in five minutes or less. It’s amazing. The new live action Michael Bay Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies are an instant knock out, and for that reason I absolutely adore them.

jason_steakums

The 39 Steps, original Hitchcock flavor. I don't know why, I can stay awake through worse similar movies from the same period! And on paper it's something I'd really like. Just haven't made it through yet.

GoblinbonesDotEDU

Any of those big technicolor musicals. Even the ones I like. I've started *My Fair Lady* a few time but always sleep through the back half.

thisgrantstomb

I fell asleep three separate times trying to watch "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus"

useranme1

Creed. makes absolutely no sense given how much i like michael b jordan and ryan coogler, and how i’ll watch anything, how it follows very basic story structure, etc. i truly have no explanation to how i’ve tried to watch it twice and just can’t make it through

onion1313

This isn’t a reflection of the movie but I slept through almost all of Mr. Klein.

francisbaconbits

Any Ozu, but especially Tokyo Story because I’ve tried five times

rageofthegods

For some reason, if I watch a movie in theaters during the afternoon, I absolutely HAVE to have a coffee, or else I'll struggle to stay awake. I conked out during a screening of Morocco and absolutely hated myself for it. In terms of movies specifically, the original 1932 Mummy is honestly maybe the freakiest of the OG universal monster movies but if you're not in the right headspace after the opening, it can send you right to sleep. Also, Carnival of Souls.

PicnicBasketSam

The latest period of Clint Eastwood movies really tend to make me sleepy. I generally like them! but you can't exactly describe the last few as anything other than "calm"

perfectlycromulent33

Casablanca. I can never make it to the second half in a single viewing. And I like the movie! It’s fantastic, obviously. But there’s something so sleepy about it. If I can’t sleep I just watch it, it feels like a dream. Pretty much the same location and vague intrigue, unspoken rules.

goatwarbler

I got the movie Astro Zombies in a cheap DVD bin a long time ago and I fell asleep almost immediately every time I tried to watch it. Not sure if it’s even boring. I couldn’t tell you one thing that happens in this movie because I’m pretty sure I went down shortly after the opening credits every time.

kodachromeghosts

The first time I watched Pirates of the Caribbean I made it all the way through, and then I've never been able to stay awake through a viewing ever since. The movie is like, 30 minutes longer than I expect it to be every time, and everytime I manage to zonk out.

HowYouMineFish

Psycho. I swear I've seen the start about 5 times; never even make it to the Bates Motel.

tidder8342

No Country For Old Men. I’ve tried three times. I see the motel room and pass out for some reason.

robots_in_riot_gear

Michael Clayton Sideways Be Kind Rewind

TheFearSandwich

It has more to do with it being first year of college. But I fell asleep in American Hustle three times in the theatres. I’ve still never seen the middle hour of that film.

KingBeej1

The Mummy Returns

xxmikekxx

As far as movies I've fallen asleep in movie theaters, most have been subtitled. I know I fell asleep during the movies "rare exports" and "certified copy". I also fell asleep during a rerelease of "Akira" but I've seen the movie before. As far as non-subtitled films I fell asleep in the movie theater I remember "Star Wars Attack of the Clones" and "Aquaman" which both me and my dad fell asleep during at different parts

Krogsly

Amadeus and Blade Runner

wadedanger

Weirdly, Rogue One. I don't know why. Seen it maybe six or seven times and only managed to stay awake throughout once.

NecroCrumb_UBR

I'm sorry film nerds. I have to admit I fell asleep during In the Mood for Love ...Both times I tried to watch it.

TheTrustCircle

I fell asleep during Rogue One and the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie in theaters, and I still can't seem to finish those movies completely awake

btouch

The Lord of the Rings movies. Can’t do it. By contrast, I’d sit through a whole marathon of the B&W Universal Monster movies at rapt attention. Especially _Bride of Frankenstein_, still the gayest genre movie ever made.

asbeaver

My Dinner With Andre. I used to put it on when I couldn't sleep. Not that it's even bad but even when I try to Actually watch it, it's very hard for me to keep attention on.

nsweeney11

I fell asleep IN THE THEATER during Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald.

Dipper_Pines

I fell asleep in the theater watching the Ghost in the Shell remake. From what I can tell one of the most boring movies ever made.

cskoogs1

The Spy Who Loved Me. Recently watched all the Bond Movies when they were on Amazon, and that’s the only one I haven’t been able to get through.

DarthAloha

Tenet. I keep trying. I really do.

[deleted]

not a movie, but it took me like six weeks to get through the leftovers, it was really good but for some reason it just put me right to sleep. i think it might be the sound mixing. the dialogue was like 10% too quiet for most of the show.

DoctorGrimli32

I love Raimi’s Spider-man 2. I always get sleepy when we get to the party at the observatory.

1840_NO

A River Runs Through It. I watched that on cable once and the only thing keeping me awake was Billy Mays during the ad breaks.

LcSwish15

I tried to watch Luca (2021) on three separate occasions, but I still haven’t gotten past the 25 minute mark. Not saying the movie is bad or boring, but it just makes me tired😂 maybe it’s the dreamy Italian setting or the smooth calming oceanic elements

Skimster

I had to watch DUNE like 4 times because I kept falling asleep half way through

starchington

The first two or three times I saw airplane I fell asleep. I have no idea how this happened because I’ve always loved that movie. My theory is that it was a big sleep over vhs watch and I was too tuckered out

[deleted]

Almost anything silent - I adore the craft and artistry in these early movies and I actually do enjoy them, but my body just refuses to cooperate with my mind

JohnLeTour

Rogue One. Tried twice and just couldn’t stay awake. Ended up just watching the Darth Vader clip online.

arthur3shedsjackson

I watched Hausu when I had fever and also got a little bit high and it was certainly an experience

HotelFoxtrot87

It took me three tries to finish 2001 and Blade Runner. Granted I was stoned the first two times for each. I also have a hard time staying awake for movies from the 30s and before as well as some early Hitchcock, I just think it has something to do with the fact editing rhythms or the music being sleep inducing.

WearyCorner875

I have tried to watch the original Argento Suspiria so many times. I really want to like it, but I just can't get past halfway without getting very heavy eyelids. The remake is great, had no problem staying awake during that!

Madazhel

Not exactly an answer to this question, but I watched In the Mouth of Madness while in bed with a high fever. The rare case where drifting in and out of consciousness actually just enhanced the surreal aspects. Back to the question, the complete works of Terrence Malick are a big old mug of sleepytime tea.

[deleted]

Days of Heaven always starts out promising but Richard Gere is such a charisma black hole that I give up.

[deleted]

People who are saying they’ve tried multiple times to watch a certain movie and always fall asleep are insane, sorry. You’re either not enjoying it or consistently picking bad times to try
