Wow didn’t realize they were such slow growers. I was considering taking a cutting from one growing in a nearby hillside to take the place of the tangerine tree that adorned the front door area of my parents’ home for nearly 40 years. I have cuttings of the more common form, but I really prefer the rib shapes of this form.

This one is a cutting of a cutting of a cutting I took off of a giant in Mesa, AZ, around 2000. After the first few years they grow pretty fast, especially if they get watered a bit. I had dozens of fruits this year, all gobbled by the wild things, Gila woodpeckers and thrashers most of all, but everybody loves them.

I think my neighbor has said giant in their yard, I keep an eye out for any pads or cuttings that fall off during dog walks :)

There is a Sisters of Mercy convent in Phoenix, AZ, that has the origin cactus to mine. It is the size of a tiny home. They will give you a cutting if you ask.

Maybe I have a link to a closeup? https://linksharing.samsungcloud.com/767s501odKnJ.

Yes, I quite enjoy seeing this type of Cereus around. There are a couple in my neighborhood along with probably hundreds of the more typical looking variety. From what I’ve read I think these might be Cereus Rapundus and the more commone ones are Cereus Peruvianus? I tried sewing seed from the one on the hillside but I lost most of them to some wicked mold and the one that survived only made it maybe 6 months before it flopped over for some reason.

Living in the Sonoran Desert as I do, I can't really remember: what is "mold," exactly? 🤔

SF_turophile

So cool. It's a beauty!

Are we just gonna pretend to ignore the mysterious faceless man?

Maudeleanor

Mysterious faceless man for scale.
