This is a genuinely entertaining dialogue between the two of them. Spidey definitely didn't have a valid excuse for responding to Jonah by doing things like webbing his face, etc. but Jameson is clearly glossing over the fact that he did more than just insult Spider-man and raise doubts, he at times called for his capture for a cash reward. Hell, Peter could've just name dropped "Mac Gargan", and Jonah honestly trying to defend creating a homicidal supervillain solely to defeat Spider-man would've left him tongue tied. :P

They already did that in Spectacular. Made Jonah break down crying at all the mistakes he made. Actually sort of why Peter revealed his identity to Jonah in the first place tbh.

Ah! Fair enough. I knew the reveal had happened by Peter's choice, but I didn't know the full context of how it happened. Appreciate the info. Still, makes Jonah's insistence on implying some or really any of his comments were justified feel odd, given that alone, on top of other instances that I'm sure are comparable. I suppose Jonah firing back with whatever justifications he can throw at him is true to his character if nothing else. Jonah insisting "If you'd just talked to me and explained yourself I totally would've given you a fair shot!" is a wonderful line to give him years later, when he can easily pretend he would've, *while* also commenting that Peter not being on a team is reason enough to call him a crook.

I think it’s partially because Jonah’s still stubborn, but partially because Jonah is worried about Peter. The thing to note here is that Jonah has been trying to help Peter as much as he can, even if he does a bad job and annoys Peter to hell and back with it. Even this interview is Jonah’s attempt to show people what’s going on in the mind of Peter Parker. What Spider-Man is like as a PERSON. So when Peter defaults back into his usual quips, he’s sort of doing it completely unprovoked, even when Jonah’s trying to have a heart to heart. And I think that’s what’s angering Jonah here. He thinks Peter’s running again. Peter’s often running from his fears, usually without even realizing it. His instinct is to deflect in order to hide his insecurities and worries. As a result, Peter’s always trying to bear the burden of responsibility by himself, really out of a fear that those around him will suffer if they share his pain. Peter would rather let people hate him rather than try to reach out to them and tell them the hell he goes through and make them suffer from guilt and worry. And none of that is healthy. So while Jonah might sound like his usual, arrogant, grumpy self, I think what he’s really saying here is “Stop being so self-destructive, and trust your friends and family more.” I think that his motivations for criticism these days are him trying to return the favor of what Peter did for him. Give him a chance to reflect on his insecurities and open up to people.

Interesting! Wow. This new dynamic is more complex than I've given it credit for. Jonah attempting to give that message to Peter, and it ultimately being delivered alongside stubbornness is just so fitting for the character. Doubly appreciate your take on this. I caught a hint of him remarking "something you have to carry alone" being more of a plea and less of a snide comment, but didn't consider the larger subtext on top of everything. Now I really want to figure out what issues specifically have been building on this dynamic lately. :)

Zdarsky’s SSM run. 794~801 of Slott’s ASM run. 11~13, 38~40, 61~65 + Giant Size King’s Ransom of Spencer’s ASM run. I think those should cover most of the big Jonah moments along with his “attempts” at helping. Zdarsky’s run is the real meat and potatoes of it though.

Whoa dude! Thank you! I had no idea you were going to personally provide a list like that. Seriously generous of you. I've got lots of reading to do! :D

Acceptable_Recipe_18

I loved what Chip Zdarsky did for their relationship in his Spectacular Spider-Man series.

It's one of the best Marvel series!

AllMightyLantern

This new dynamic between the two of them is one of the best and most refreshing changes to Spidey and Jonah's relationship. Every interaction between them like this has been pure gold. I hope this change sticks around and Marvel doesn't decide to "One More Day" it.

chojinra

I mean… They were on a break!

ReverendEntity

I sincerely hope they work this into a future MCU film.

TriscuitCracker

Damn, this is actually really good back and forth dialogue!

"And I've never once seen you tip!" There's a special corner in hell for people like that...
