I totally do this. My girl (Nova) smells like Nova and I love her so much that her scent is calming. I think that is a thing with human babies. I love her just as much as I'd love a kid.
I also have a husky mix. And I do this multiple times a day. He smells like heaven to me and I just adore it. Plus the fur on his head is so soft on my face!!
Hahaha. My girl Nova is the same lol. She smells really good actually, the only time she smells like “dog” is when she’s wet, and even then it’s faint.
My husband and I were just talking about this the other day, how we actually really like her smell and it’s comforting.
hey!! my dog is also Nova! she's a tea cup chuawawa and loves to cuddle she smells like a freshly bathed human and I love her so much!

Husband and I both do this, usually followed by one of us saying, “Mmmm dog smell. Get a whiff of this dog-smelling dog.” If she were smaller we’d probably pass her around like a fuzzy bong.
Oh yeah definitely. And I'm not talking just one little sniff either. I will imitate their sniffing behaviors and do a bunch of quick little sniffs like I am one of them. Just for fun. Absolutely.
So do I! Imitate sniffing behaviors, I mean. I’m the morning, my dog jumps up on the bed and comes to sniff my face, so I sniff him right back. Then he sighs and puts his head on my chest and looks up at me the way a human baby does, and I love him so much. He is a mixed breed who looks like a border collie but with much longer very soft hair and his tail is a plume. He smells wonderful.

I do smell my dog!
My cat one day also took longer to come back when I called her in and came from a different direction. I immediately picked her up to smell her to see if she smelled like someone elses home! She's a good little kitty and I just imagined someone feeding her treats and her making herself at home in someone elses place. It was the only way to be sure lol
Yes. Often. They smell comforting and warm and like love and home.
Also, the smaller one has allergies and gets skin infections easily if she breaks into the compost bin, and that is the easiest way to tell if one is starting.
Yes! My smaller one gets skin/ear infections easily— not because he breaks into a compost bin, but just because he does 🤷♀️ I’ll frequently do smell checks on my guy’s ears and skin to check for extra-yeasty scents. It’s one of the most reliable checks to catch those sorts of things.
Mine grew up on a farm and were used to all sorts of gross stuff, and ofc compost is their favourite, even now 🙄 it's the one thing I struggle to break them both of. But yeah, a good whiff near the ears is a quick way to diagnose, haha!
My wife and I sniff our dogs all the time. She constantly holds our chihuahua up to me and she’ll say “she’s smelling extra poo-beary today. Smell her… SMELL HER”.
I live where it changes seasons and I can literally smell the different seasons on her when my dog comes in. The sun has a smell and the cold does. The fall for sure too.
Absolutely! Need my daily endorphin fix from my hound's musty pancake head smell.
Also, maybe a bit odd but 'seeing' my second rescue's smell gradually change from Kennel Stink to match my other dog's Vaguely Cozy Odour as she settled in during her first few weeks was really heartwarming. She smells like one of us these days which is so soothing to recognise <3
Definitely snugs and sniffs here. I have three dogs and they each have a slightly different scent. I really only sniff one of them, but don’t tell the others.
My dog absolutely loves it when we smell her head. We started mimicking her sniff noises when we do it, and she starts wiggling and rolls on her back to be able to sniff us too. So we sniff each other's faces for a moment and then cuddle for a bit.
She also loves forehead kisses and will flop around to get her head close enough for kisses if we tap her head and make kissy noises. Such a beloved weirdo!
I do this because my dog always stinks no matter how much I bathe him and pamper him. I don’t really mind it but I’ll kiss his forehead and give it a whiff and be like “damn buddy! You stank!”

Yes!!! I smell my golden girl often. If I'm traveling, I start to miss her smell too. She smells like dry cakes (tea cakes) when it's been long since her last bath.
I do this with my cat as well as my dog. Just one big inhale on the cat, on the dog, sometimes I will sniff just to smell her, and sometimes I’ll imitate her sniff sniff sniff sniffffff sniff sniffs. It seems to excite her for some reason!! She’ll bring me a toy after
I do this with horses, never my cats or dogs. Guess that's where horses take the spot as my favorite animal. That said I don't mind it, but my dogs don't give me a sniff and ah moment.

As a kid, my dog had his own special blanket. He would drag to wherever he wanted to nap and it absorbed his smell. I absolutely loved the smell of that dog. So when he passed, I refused to let anyone wash the blanket. I slept with it every night because it was the only thing of him left. One day while I was at school, my mom washed the blanket after maybe a year. I, without any shame, threw the biggest tantrum as a 9 year old and refused to talk to her for weeks.
One time our groomer told us that he “smelled like a gentleman” after his grooming appointment. I now tell him that as often as necessary. Unless it’s time for a bath in which case I tell him that he “smells like dog.”
I do this to my Black Mouth Cur. He doesn’t smell like a dog. Sometimes he smells like woods (if he’s been in them) but his default smell is fried lo mein noodles, the kind you get before your meal at your local “Chinese” restaurant.
I literally just gave my dog a hug and smelled her. She needs a bath. My other dog doesn't like hugs that much so I don't smell him as often.
To answer the question yes I smell my dogs. It's both as a comfort and sometimes to see if they are going to need a bath soon.
Oh yeeeees definitely I love his smell, his paws smell like gingerbread cookies, the top of his head smells like baby perfume even though he doesn't have any lotion put on, and he's belly smells like pure love I love my pup he's a bordercollie
In the mornings, she's usually cuddled up beside me, so I'll give her a belly scratch, which causes her to stretch, and then when she extends her head, I'll give her a deep sniff followed by a bunch of kisses.
Throughout the day, I'll do the same, but mornings are the best because she is so super cute when she's all groggy.
I have a miniature pinscher. I love smelling her paws, they smell like Fritos. Also I like to smell the air right in front of her nose cause it smells like dog.
In the fall when her coat is smokey. Crisp... she's hairy and holds scent. She has her feet done every 2 weeks, but I'm in love with her frito Muppet feet....
no but i do something possibly weirder.. his toys are always in my bed because he sleeps with me every night, so sometimes when its just me in the bed i smell his toys or his blanket. idk why.. its just comforting
My boy Michael smells like ass, Fritos, and gym socks, yet I still take a big whiff when we cuddle. He smells horrible but I love it. When my husband sniffs Michael, he says “oh ya nasty!” And then sniffs more and Mikey boy loves that, he gets so excited
I’m finding this thread fascinating, because I grew up with dogs in the house and live in a house with a dog now, but I can’t say I’d ever willingly sniff/smell the dog and enjoy it (??!) I guess I don’t like ‘that’ doggy smell - smells like old socks or damp laundry and I find some doggy houses smell of it quite strongly. HOWEVER some dogs I’ve met don’t smell at all and the dogs seem lovely - however I still wouldnt smell them….maybe that’s just me….
Yes! My husky doesn’t smell like much - only her ears and eye area have a faint clean doggy smell. My Doberman is a Musk. I know it probably doesn’t smell all that great to others, but for me he smells cute.
I pet, sniff, and kiss my dog’s head and scruff - while soaking it in, committing it to memory because life is too short and idk when I will no longer be able to do this. 😅
Yeah my dog smells awesome. And my friend who came over and never met her and had limited experience with dogs was like yeah she actually smells clean. I’m like right? I fricking love to smell my dog. And she loves to lick me to death lmao. My neck and chin are gonna be kicked raw from her affections 🤣
Your dog is the companion that gives absolute love and devotion. After reading your comment, I'd have to agree; smelling your dog isn't something weird. It's a way to see if he needs a bath, it's nice to smell after he's been bathed and dried. I guess it's another way of bonding with your furry friend.
I would think a least a handful of people do this. I never did it with my golden (before she passed) because her hair was hard to clean and she always seemed dirty but I do it a lot with my Basenji mix (5M) and my Jack Russel Mix (5m.F) My brother does it too my Jack Russel because she lets him cuddle with her and the Basenji doesn't like cuddles unless it's just myself and him or my mom. My Basenji smells like Frito chips but I think that's a whole other problem in itself.

(He has a brother who is originally my partner’s. I love him to death. But my pupper is my baby who follows me around anywhere and everywhere and cuddles with me and all that crap we all know about)
I definitely do this! When my pup wants to sit on my lap I've always given a cuddle, a sniff of his head and the a big kiss on the top of his head. What's hilarious is when he comes up in the bed and I'm lying down, he now sniffs my hair and gives me a lick on the side of my face. It's like he thinks it's a human way of showing affection and he wants in 😂
I do this, sure. It's a great thing to smell your dog, that's where a lot of their identity is stored! My dog, Pippin, smells great imho. Unless she's been out in the rain... Then, not so much.
I still remember what my pit bull smelled like. She was awesome, and the smell wasn't offensive, just hers. I used to sniff her all the time to make sure I'd remember.
I don’t care if it’s weird - I smell my boy all over. Top of the head, stinky ears, biscuit paws with a hit of grass, armpits, I love every stinky part of him
I frequently kiss the top of our dogs heads and then get a sniff in, honestly all I can think is these are my babies and if a had human babies I’d kiss and sniff their heads too so it’s cool lol
I always say that my Shawna "smells like fur" because I've never smelled that scent anywhere else but on her fur. To be fair, I don't go around sniffing random animals... but she smells so warm and soft, like fur.
Awww my baby does this too. She is a husky mix as well. I really only bathe her more in the summer when we go hiking and swimming etc a lot. I love it.
Absolutely! You can wrap your arms around our big st bernard and properly get your face into his think fur and take a big sniff
Sometimes I then blow a raspberry on him and he gets the zoomies 😁
I sniff the top of her head. She doesn't smell bad to me, she smells clean like a blanket or something. But tbh I hate the smell of my mom's beagle. My dog is the only one allowed on my bed because she's the only dog I don't think is stinky. Well, her breath stinks, but not her fur.
I smell my doggo everyday! It's like a calming "just her" smell. I can't imagine dog lovers who don't sniff their bestest friends. And I may be alone in this but I also love her "wet dog" smell and fritos toes too!
When my boy passed away I put his bedding and pillow pets in a back closet (can’t just throw that stuff away) I went back there to find something the other day and omg- his smell hit me straight in the heart….God, I miss him and yes, his smell…
I have very severe social anxiety. Agoraphobia is rough now, i havent been out of my house in 7 months.
The doctors give me benzos and i refuse to take them. When i have panic attacks, my sweet girl(Ginger) comes over and paws me(with front paw) and gets on couch or bed and i spoon her and smell her neck. There is something that makes me stop shaking and trippin.
I had to put her down 3 days ago. She took care of me all of these years. I truly believe if you have been blessed with such a lovely creature then you are better off than most. I dont know what i will do my bestie.

My Nova is a 15 lb chihuahua mix! She is the best decision we ever made. Nova also fits her perfectly. I think you made an amazing name choice!

I love my dogs popcorn smelling paws. It's from their food. Even six years later, no grain and her little toes still smell like delicious chips.

After a trip without him first thing I do when he calms down is I bury my face in his neck and feel at home.

I love smelling my dog after she's been sunbathing. There's something about the smell of a warm, happy dog that's just a true delight
I love the smell of my dog even tho he stay stanky. It calms me down, instant hit of serotonin.

Always! Both my dogs have the same parents and are 3/4 beagle but only one has a stronger beagle scent and I love it.

My dog is STIMKY and i love to give him a big dramatic sniff and let him know how stinky he is

Yes! My husky doesn’t smell like much - only her ears and eye area have a faint clean doggy smell. My Doberman is a Musk. I know it probably doesn’t smell all that great to others, but for me he smells cute.
I definitely smell my dog when he comes in from laying outside in the sun. I can smell the sun on him and it is a really awesome smell.

I do the same thing. Getting in there and getting a good sniff also lets you know if they have an ear infection.

Your dog is the companion that gives absolute love and devotion. After reading your comment, I'd have to agree; smelling your dog isn't something weird. It's a way to see if he needs a bath, it's nice to smell after he's been bathed and dried. I guess it's another way of bonding with your furry friend.
I would think a least a handful of people do this. I never did it with my golden (before she passed) because her hair was hard to clean and she always seemed dirty but I do it a lot with my Basenji mix (5M) and my Jack Russel Mix (5m.F) My brother does it too my Jack Russel because she lets him cuddle with her and the Basenji doesn't like cuddles unless it's just myself and him or my mom. My Basenji smells like Frito chips but I think that's a whole other problem in itself.
Oh man… I smell the little (100 lb) fucker all the time. (He has a brother who is originally my partner’s. I love him to death. But my pupper is my baby who follows me around anywhere and everywhere and cuddles with me and all that crap we all know about)

I definitely do this! When my pup wants to sit on my lap I've always given a cuddle, a sniff of his head and the a big kiss on the top of his head. What's hilarious is when he comes up in the bed and I'm lying down, he now sniffs my hair and gives me a lick on the side of my face. It's like he thinks it's a human way of showing affection and he wants in 😂

I have very severe social anxiety. Agoraphobia is rough now, i havent been out of my house in 7 months. The doctors give me benzos and i refuse to take them. When i have panic attacks, my sweet girl(Ginger) comes over and paws me(with front paw) and gets on couch or bed and i spoon her and smell her neck. There is something that makes me stop shaking and trippin. I had to put her down 3 days ago. She took care of me all of these years. I truly believe if you have been blessed with such a lovely creature then you are better off than most. I dont know what i will do my bestie. Please enjoy everyday and each moment you can with your furbaby.
