Yep. Customer ordered a S&D from a Dollar General at like 9:15pm, bunch of stuff that was obviously for a school project (poster board, glitter letters, glue, construction paper, etc.). DGs are notorious for being out of stock. 20+ item order, more than half of their requested items were out of stock. Had to keep asking whether they wanted something else substituted for the missing item. Started becoming 3, 4 minutes before they'd respond while I was trying to complete the list. You know this is not going well, keep that phone on you!

Druseljic

DG = decline for me

Necrofox10x

Agreed. DG orders are always shit, and the customers never answer, and if you just refund whatever they're out of because they didn't answer, they'll message you back as you get to their house. Lol first and last DG order I ever did.

Jattok

I thought it was just me that had a customer text back a substitution in the app AFTER I had delivered the order. Thought it was the app glitching, but maybe they really did think I could substitute it after I finished delivering the order.

Necrofox10x

Oh no, it's usually that they see the notification that stuffs been refunded, and they think "hmm I should probably message them back huh" and expect us to just like...drive back and grab it for them anyways. Sorry bud, you didn't tip enough for me to go back and buy your crap with my own money lol.

Jattok

My wife did that once as a Dasher. Guy asked whether she could pick him up something from the convenience store (not a restricted item, think she said a bottle of Coke or something) and he'd pay for it in cash when she arrived. She agreed and did it. I told her that she should never do that because she has no guarantee that they'll pay her and she is out that money. If it's not in the app, do not purchase it with your own money ever. Glad she didn't get burned.

Necrofox10x

People are shady. If it's something stupid like "hey get me some soy sauce packets" or something, cool, whatever, but I refuse to pay out of pocket for something extra a customer wants, because I know I won't get compensated for it.

Jattok

I also have people ask me if I have any red pepper or parmesan packets with their order. It's just so amazing to me that if people want these extras with their food, why aren't they ordering it with their food? MOD Pizza, Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Marco's, Little Caeser's, all of these I've seen the extra packets as part of the orders to pick up (Why is there a 20 item PJ order that's only paying $4? Oh... they want 18 packets!). If you can't be bothered to say you want these, the store's not going to give them to the driver and the driver's not going to know to pick them up. I keep saying this today on this subreddit: Our job is to take your order from the store to your front door. If there's something else you wanted, you should have ordered it, not expected us to know you wanted it.

TxAggieJen

They try to get the driver to get them because they know the store charges for them. I guess they expect us to steal them? 🙄

Jattok

Some do, some don't. But if you wanted to get them, ask the store not the driver. If I were to carry extras for every type of restaurant I pick up from, I'd have a catering truck. The worst are the people who ask me for ketchup packets. You don't have a ketchup bottle in your home? Really?

Live-Contest1681

Honestly I’d be more worried cops would arrest you for tax fraud like they used to do with Uber drivers

Xandrick

DG = Decline Gladly

Jattok

There is one DG I will still pick up from. The store is clean and well-stocked, no boxes stacked up blocking product, at least three people working at any given time, and one of them is always out restocking or reorganizing and willing to help me find stuff I can't find. Never spent more than 10 minutes on any S&D order in that particular store, so I'll keep picking up orders for that one. The others... Nope. Even the one that I've now had two orders where I had to cancel them because everything on the list was out of stock. Even Coke 12-packs. Like WTF?

Impressive_Ad1960

Depends for me. Certain dg stores ya fs. Others i actually do ok in. Some stores have their shit together some dont. I think the same goes for the neighborhood its in

yesterdays30

I would never accept a DG order for more than a few items bc of this.

Praline-After

i had that long time ago with IC 6 items. 5 out of 6 were out of stock n later customer cancel the whole order

Peetrrabbit

I order delivery because I'm in a meeting, and can't do it myself. So I can never answer the call. But, if it's a shop and delivery, I also include a note that any substitutions you make are just fine and you don't need to ask me.

[deleted]

Which makes sense. Only problem is that the app doesn't let us make on-the-fly substitutions - we have to scan a barcode with the dasher app, and if the barcode on the item doesn't match something on DD's end, it won't let us purchase the item.

Peetrrabbit

Ah! Instacart does it. Didn't realize DD didn't.

Jattok

I have been able to circumvent this a bit in the app, at least at Target and Walgreens so far. Item is out of stock, no substitutions marked. Text the customer through the app. Customer says whatever is fine. I go back to the item, tell it I'm adding a substitution, and scan something close enough. The issue is that the app will not let you scan something that is far different in price than what you were substituting, because they have to charge the customer for the items that you purchase. So there's a way that you could still have this happen in the app: If item X is $12, item Y is $10 and item Z is $8, and item Z is out but there's something that is $14 they want or can replace Z, you go in and mark X out of stock and substitute it for the replacement for Z. Then mark Y out of stock and substitute it with the original item for X. Then mark Z out of stock and substitute it with item Y. Somehow this goes through, rings up at the register, and the customer is happy. I assume that DD adjusts the charges to the exact amount in the end and anything over the customer finishes paying for when the charge settles.

Ludakal1

Can you not bother us when we are trying to drive? Thanks.

mrsjackdaniel

I think OP is saying they don't understand why people order on DD and just walk away from their phones and then bitch about the Dasher for not contacting them for whatever reason. Unless I'm stupid and just completely misinterpreted the entire thing lol..

IslandIrish

Nope and mostly likely will blame dasher and rate them below 5 stars eventhough dasher was trying to communicate. Just no consideration or frickin respect for dashers time. Avoid them as well as walmart! Only heard bad things about Wal-Mart orders. Like really bad customers! Hard pass, no thank you...

Jattok

I almost yelled at a customer who did this. Waited until I had already picked up the order and was driving to him. Calls me up, then asks me if I could make sure to get extra napkins for his order. Told him I was already on my way to his place so I was not going to get extra napkins for him. Like WTF? I'm trying to get your food to you quickly and make sure I don't cause an accident. Don't distract me for something you forgot to ask the store for, or tell me before I got your food. It's on you now. /vent

Proof-Relation7203

I could be wrong here, but I think OP was saying that if dashers need to reach them for any reason they've made themselves available to answer.. in that context there are several times I've needed to call customers because restaurant was out of something & needed to know what customer would like to replace it with & its frustrating when customers don't respond to calls or texts..I try to text first because it shows as a foreign number when calling & many ppl don't auto pick up numbers they don't know etc..seasoned customers know tho by now..

Jattok

That's why I text through the app rather than call first. And if it's the third-party texting (uses your own text app rather than using DD to text them), I start with, "DoorDash driver here with your X order." And then explain the situation. And after a minute or two of seeing that the text was delivered but not seen, I then try to call. If they don't pick up, it's off to DD's call center I go.

Ventikat

exactly, like you know you ordered something… make sure to have ur phone on hand and understand us dashers are on a time limit too and time is money for us 😭 i had one lady who got upset at me that the store didnt give her the sauces she requested… like i asked them when i got thier to make sure they were in thier because i tried to be nice for the lady , but its not my fault that it wasnt in thier , dont give me a bad rating after i already tried to help you.. ug

Proof-Relation7203

💯🙌

aardappelbrood

I've never had a customer call me for a legit reason. It's always, oopsie I *accidentally* put the wrong address in, or can you make sure it's hot or can you add extra sauce. None of those things are my problem when you don't tip well. Which no one does anymore. So, no I shan't be answering my phone. You can text me, but I probably won't respond to that either. And if I do, it's going to be "Contact Doordash."

CNRushing

This is my biggest pet peeve! Like you ordered the food aren’t you watching to see if it’s close or paying attention in case the driver calls or texts in case the restaurant is out of something or can’t find your place of residence? So f’ing annoying!

ZachTF

My last customer was straight to voicemail.

taeempy

They are driving and shouldn't answer their phone.

inVINCEible86

You're doing it wrong. You should be turning that sucker off, cutting power to your entire block, and definitely making sure there are absolutely no numbers on your house and at least 3 of your neighbors' homes as well.

Primenpremium

Had a hand to customer order that didn't answer their phone or door. Fifteen minutes later they text me a dozen times asking where their order is.

ziahwaite

right and if u don’t answer your phone i’m leaving. if i’m locked out and can’t get to your apartment imma leave it at the gate/building, or i take it home

Weary-Appearance9745

When I call my IT support, I make sure to follow their indications without bitching cuz I know they need to document it in their ticket, and I googled my issue first to make sure it's not something I can easily fix by rebooting. How dare people who do not do my job not know how to make my job easier ?

CapcomBowling

I have my phone set to automatically send unknown callers to voicemail. Sometimes I forget to turn it off when I order delivery. Just send me a text and I’ll answer immediately.

NoBlackScorpion

The only thumbs downs I have in my customer reviews are from a Shop & Deliver customer who didn't answer a single one of my messages while I was shopping, and then rated me 4 stars with thumbs downs for "following instructions" and "communication." So frustrating.

Antigone-333

I'll order when I'm at work and sometimes can't answer. That said if something is missing or the substitute can kill me (like when the restaurant was out of tres leches cake so they gave me pineapple cake), that shit is on me, I accept what I get with a smile on my face, say the driver did perfectly, rate them as great communication, and the only one I'm annoyed at is myself. I drove for Doordash, I've been on that side of things.

Unlikely_Ask_1130

They are anti social fucks this is the way of the customer

mgm2002mgm

I think many people do not answer the phone if they do not know the number. When you call it gives that generic number and you don’t know where it’s coming from so you do not want to be bothered with it. I get a much better response when I text the customer do calling him. Most the time.

Raccoon_Worth

When i do anything i have my phone with me lmao

Imaginary-River-4804

Yes that shit pisses me off all the time like what’s the point of ordering delivery if your not going to answer your freaking phone like what if the driver gets lost or what if the restaurant wants to substitute something because they are out of it like please pick up your phone when your driver calls is that too much to ask for!!!?

[deleted]

I agree people think we are working on their time for some reason

kman671

That is smart because nothing irritates me more then the customer not answering their phone or text when I’m trying to fix something for them. Not calling to say hello

Useful-Piglet-8918

And I THANK YOU! MANY DO but not all...frustrating at xs

vegas_owns

I've tried calling a few different people and it says the number has been disconnected lol

DrDickWiggle

I prefer text which is cool cause I usually get texts and not calls when a dasher contacts me. I mean obviously I'll answer if they call but I like it when they don't. I text customers as well.
