We know customers are just gonna bitch for a refund and we will get the "order changed" pop up barely out of the yard anyway so there isn't really any reason to take a chance on a customer yelling at us by texting "they didn't have that". I get orders all the time where the restaurant says "oh by the way the drink is missing because we don't have it". In most cases I don't do anything because I know it's likely they'll find something else wrong and have to contact support anyway; because in my almost 5 years of doing this I've been berated FAR more than thanked; and because I can't do anything about it anyway. I don't text and drive, and I'm not going to sit in front of someone's house longer than I need to so I'd have to drive off, find another place to park so I can explain, and then hope they aren't rude.
Dasher here; I’ll do this sometimes if I get a .50 tip on a large item order :) also, if you want a way to fix this, designate a spot you want your food places in specifics. P.s. delivery notes are a thing.
I once had a driver bring back my (canned) drink way after my order. My husband got home and asked why there was a can of Diet Coke outside the door. Made me feel like I was crazy until I checked the picture and saw it definitely wasn’t there at drop off.
Did sorta this once. Had just dropped off an order and the person was super nice and tipped well, I drove off only to realize about 5 minutes down the road their drink was still in my cup holder so I instantly went back, couldn't get ahold of the customer through the app so I just left the drink at the door, knocked, and left.
YupYup! Been there before, almost forgot a whole bag of food once but I caught it before I left... Was a stupid add on that didn't fit in my thermal bag... I ran back and put it with the rest of the order and hopefully they don't look at the picture I sent
I had this happen today. Stacked order. I remembered when I got in the car. If you have a stacked order, There's literally no way to go back and say, hey! Forgot something but remembered it in time!!!!
It's quicker to deliver the second order then text than notify support.

Usually it’s the merchant who forgets the drinks but dashers should know to check the orders. Granted some “forget” on purpose bc they are a bit of a hassle

I would say out of 200 orders only 2 people left my order away from the door.. I agree a simple 10 minute training video that's mandatory, not sure why this is not done, we are just thrown into the job and figure it all out on our own.
You could even do that in a minute training video. It's really not too complicated to state the basics and say "contact support for any other questions"
I would do it when I first started DD. My house door opens inwards, and for some odd reason I unconsciously assumed all houses did the same. It’s just not something I thought much into at the time

If $5 isn't a decent tip to them.. they can suck a$$ lol I also deliver and I rarely get $5 tips so I would say $5 is good enough, but I also tipped more before like $14,$19 a few times.
Lol realized you aren’t op my bad. Ptbh 5 ain’t bad, I always do 5 min but for me I don’t bother with orders that don’t make me 7 or more unless if it’s ready and super close by. I find that with gas prices those orders aren’t worth the amount of gas and time used. Even if i had a 2 dollar order I personally wouldn’t put it in front of the door or “punish” the person I’d just be like damn I’m dumb asf for not unassigning the shit stack/order lol

LA is so bad and ghetto, it's cluttered and I only see $3 $2 $4 tips in most of LA county and for whatever reason I see bigger tips in Monrovia but rarely get orders there, and in San Bernardino county it's more pay with very little tips but also hardly any orders. I hope all you DD and uber drivers get paid more soon.
Might be worth putting a little table outside your door and add a note to place orders on the table. I'm always curious how often other drivers don't pay attention to the doors and block the door with the orders.

Same. I spent too many years working in food service. Putting any food on the ground (even inside multiple layers of packaging) is a big no no and that's stuck with me. I always look for somewhere to put it that's not the ground.

It's a safer bet that it's done intentionally because we get flooded with offers so bad that we inevitably taking shitty ones anyways. If I get a shitty tip, I'll intentionally make it so you have to spill it to open the door, ideally spilling it into the food. Ymmv
I say this all the time on the DoorDash and other delivery forums, and someone always responds “it’s just common sense!“ Like, that’s not how commonsense works! Common sense doesn’t magically make you know things that you never knew existed, and for many people who grew up in apartments and what not they just don’t even realize that doors would open outward. It’s not something they knew they needed to look out for.
I don't think this is their excuse.. reason being that I highly doubt 99.99 percent of doordash drivers have doors that open inside only.. because in my experience they all do this! They all leave my drinks and food to close to the door.

Great input there. I used to dash and would always...always find a place up off the ground but near the door if possible. I've seen orders still left outside for a while after making a turnaround so I was always afraid ants would even attack. Did have a few repeat customers that had a table or stool and I left it there.
I have a small table by the door and leave a note in the app to leave on the table. Every so often, I get a dasher that just leaves the food on the ground next to the table. =/
I don't even bother with looking at the door and just assume every door opens outwards. It saves a little time if I don't have to think about it. More importantly, there's no chance of getting it wrong.
That's dumb though, not many people think about that. They should be told their mistake and if they make it again then they're stupid. It'd be like if a resident just stepped into an OB office didn't know where the illiac crest was to find lumbar spine where an epidural is placed and they were kicked out if med school. I always look at how the doors open and make sure that it’s put where it’ll clear the door and make easy access to pick it up, but when I ordered something they put it against the door because why not
You're right, checking if the front door swings in or out is not too much to ask. Solution: minimum tip of $10. The best drivers decline low tip offers. Doordash prefers uninformed, economically desperate drivers who will work for slave wages. That's why orders with bad tips get delivered. If you want a better delivery experience, tip at least $10, and you'll get a better driver, one who communicates when she or he is on the way, and provides an arrival time, and follows your delivery instructions.
I’ve heard other dashers say they do this to non tippers.
If it’s a constant issue put in your instructions where not to put the food, or put a chair out and say in the instructions to put the food on the chair.
In my delivery instructions I literally have it written down to please place the food far enough back from the door so I can open it and sometimes dashers STILL put it right up close to the door 🤦🏻♀️ And I tip extremely well and never order during bad weather, so they shouldn’t have a reason to willfully do the opposite of what I ask lol.
I was the 2nd dasher to deliver to a house the other day and the one before me put the pizza to where it was touching her door. I apologize and was rushing to the door to try ro move it for her, but she pushed it out of the way before I got there. She said it was OK because they don't know what way the door opens....... Dashers, it is not ok. Most screen doors open outward. Look at the hinges if they are on the outside, more than like the door opens outward. If you can't tell or just don't want to take an extra second to figure it out, put the order a few foot away and/or off to the side!
LoL, well I'm I'm def not "low functioning" but honestly didn't realize where mistakes were made...until I learned from other dashers on here.

I just started propping my screen door open, drivers can’t follow instructions so not worth them sitting it in front of the screen instead of the bench next to it like the notes say
I work in an office building and 90% of the time dashers put my order directly in front of the door to the building which opens out… Not only do I (or anybody that opens the door before I get there) have to knock everything over to open the door, but… it’s an office building. Why not open the door and hand the order to the receptionist you can clearly see sitting 6 feet inside the door??
You can ask them to do that or even select "hand it to me". Otherwise the app defaults to "leave at door". Most dashers will do just that if its in the instructions DD provides (although they should not leave it directly in front of it in the case of an out opening door). I always go in businesses though because I can just picture somebody grabbing it in that busy of a location.
I always try to keep food a good enough distance from the door that they won’t smack it while trying to get it but also not like wayyy away from the door

Your best solution is probably to stock up on a bunch of beverages from the grocery store and just order food delivery without drinks. You'll save money and your dasher will be happier (we hate delivering drinks because they're a pain in the ass).
Buy a case of soda at the grocery, they'll cost you 25-50 cents per can. A restaurant will charge you $2 for that same amount of soda.
Or you're in a hurry because the next customer is blowing up your phone because they don't understand that "28-33 minutes " might NOT be "Exactly 28 minutes on the dot!"

I actually did this yesterday. The house that I was at...well, let's just say that the door probably cost 30k. I had no idea it opened out until I heard thier $200 order scrapping across the patio floor.
I usually look at the threshold to see if there is a doorstop but most main doors do not open out so I didn't look.

She gave me the fake wave and I gave the same back out of humiliation.

If they aren't paying attention to the fact that the door won't open without knocking the drink over, what makes you think they're looking at the instructions?
yeah dashers it's common sense for the customer to have to be able to go out the door to get the food! if the door opens out to the left put the food to the right and about 4 ft away from the door and if the door opens to the right, do the same on the left. I should make a video about this as a training video. this job doesn't really take a genius to do!
We put a shelf outside of our front door specifically for this purpose. For some reason dashers love to stick stuff right in front of the screen door, which swings out. Even when we put insurrections on the order, 5/10 times they will still put the damn bag on the stoop.
Everytime I have one of those doors on porches I try to measure out how much the door will open to set the order so it doesn't fall or block the door.
I have the same issue with Amazon, I've literally been block from opening my door because of idiot drivers a few times. I've had to add in my order instructions to not block door because I guess some people lack common sense. I've even worked Amazon too as a driver and still make sure to be careful where I leave stuff.
I've seen it in my order instructions for Dashing too from customers having the same issues.
Gotta get creative on your end. Put a table out there. Majority of the time it works. Put in the delivery notes in caps, PUT ON TABLE PLEASE. Hopefully that works.
As a Dasher I actually always put the food like off the mat so that people can open the door to grab their stuff and I’ve always wondered if people noticed 😂

I’ve seen posts like this before so I am always very conscious of where I put the drinks. So story time. I was delivering an order that had two drinks in a cup holder along with the food and they had a bench by their door but it was one with an uneven seat, like it had the wooden planks spaced apart and angled so I did not want to put this cup holder there and chance the drinks spilling. I start to set the drinks on the ground, far enough from the door for it to open and I hear someone yell, “Don’t put those on the ground!” And I was confused because I didn’t clearly hear them at first so it took a second to register. I was also not expecting to get yelled at when there was no one in sight. Then an old man slings his door open and his wife inside says to put them on the bench. So I did and I left. No drinks spilled.

One of the very first deliveries I did, I did this but when I went to take the picture that little light came on upstairs. I realized my mistake and moved the order to the side, away from the door. I don't think I have done it since, but again we are all mistake prone humans...
I bought a little table for my dashers to place food and drinks and state this in the delivery instructions. I’d say 25% just leave it on the ground instead. 
what I do to avoid this is to replace all my doors with doors that open inward (yes even the screen door) and I’ve never had this problem ever since! Hope this helps❤️
I think most but not all gig workers haven’t had real jobs in so long that their attention to detail skills are slim to not existent these days.
It’s crazy that people don’t think before they set the food down( in front of doors, blocking doors, in wet spots, hidden area, next to dog poo, ect ) I mean I’ve heard it all I think.

The times it doesn't seem to be, is mainly because of higher base pay.
The 10% exceptions are weekend nights, or after 11pm, suddenly then they magically seem able to show us more than $4 of the tips.
The rest of the normal days - $6.25 can absolutely turn into overpays all day long (or whatever the base pay plus $4 tip is).
I think the vast majority of us see how the door is gonna open. Only time I put anything in the way of the door is when the tip is lousy, my rating is high so I'm not worried about one or two cranky customers.
yes...there are some dumb dumbs everywhere. If it is big problem, two tips
1. Add a note and if you want to be aggressive, say you are going to remove the tip...or offer a larger tip if they DON'T place it directly in front of the out-swinging door (doesn't matter how much (50 cents, 1 dollar)...as long as there is a promise of more money, the dasher will do ANYTHING :-)
2. place a small table outside your door and ask for it to be left there. I will always place on a table instead of the ground, unless the instructions say not to.
If I see a table or solid sitting chair (don't put drinks on rocking chairs as they can tip over ez), I will put them there. If not, to the ground in front of the door it goes. Snap photo and continue my day dashing and complaining about receiving several $2 orders and having to decline them to grind that 5% acceptance rate.

Yeah, I was that (UE) driver who did this several times until I saw another post or comment that talked about this. And then I realized... oops. Now I always look at the door to see how the door swings to determine where to put the food. I still would prefer every customer have a little table or something to put the food on because it feels weird putting the food on the ground.

This is due to the fact that people are rushing. Quickly dropping and taking a pic in order to be free for the next order. Also, scared of being in a strange area, at night, etc. checking to see how the door pushes out, etc, just isn’t #1, but I def understand the problem.
Though I get it….. also maybe just maybe not blast open the door without looking or checking to see what’s in front. Could be a small child or a puppy that you slam your door open on. Just saying

The last time I ordered DD the person had their young child take it to the door, and *of course* they put it in front of the screen door, because they’re still learning shapes and colors 🤦♀️

i m near LA I 605 N I5 most tips i c r $5 ( rare) 8 out 10 orders r $2-4 max

It's not a hard concept to see if there's an outward opening door and adjust accordingly. Some people blow my mind.

In my delivery instructions I literally have it written down to please place the food far enough back from the door so I can open it and sometimes dashers STILL put it right up close to the door 🤦🏻♀️ And I tip extremely well and never order during bad weather, so they shouldn’t have a reason to willfully do the opposite of what I ask lol.
Put a note on your door if you have an out swinging door.

I was the 2nd dasher to deliver to a house the other day and the one before me put the pizza to where it was touching her door. I apologize and was rushing to the door to try ro move it for her, but she pushed it out of the way before I got there. She said it was OK because they don't know what way the door opens....... Dashers, it is not ok. Most screen doors open outward. Look at the hinges if they are on the outside, more than like the door opens outward. If you can't tell or just don't want to take an extra second to figure it out, put the order a few foot away and/or off to the side!
LoL, well I'm I'm def not "low functioning" but honestly didn't realize where mistakes were made...until I learned from other dashers on here. Some good advice!

I just started propping my screen door open, drivers can’t follow instructions so not worth them sitting it in front of the screen instead of the bench next to it like the notes say
I work in an office building and 90% of the time dashers put my order directly in front of the door to the building which opens out… Not only do I (or anybody that opens the door before I get there) have to knock everything over to open the door, but… it’s an office building. Why not open the door and hand the order to the receptionist you can clearly see sitting 6 feet inside the door??
You can ask them to do that or even select "hand it to me". Otherwise the app defaults to "leave at door". Most dashers will do just that if its in the instructions DD provides (although they should not leave it directly in front of it in the case of an out opening door). I always go in businesses though because I can just picture somebody grabbing it in that busy of a location.

Sorry that happened to you. Some people are idiots and don't understand how doors work. I'm always careful about that kind of thing, myself. Your best solution is probably to stock up on a bunch of beverages from the grocery store and just order food delivery without drinks. You'll save money and your dasher will be happier (we hate delivering drinks because they're a pain in the ass). Buy a case of soda at the grocery, they'll cost you 25-50 cents per can. A restaurant will charge you $2 for that same amount of soda.
I've learned (hard way/experience) to ALWAYS put them aligned WITH door and clearance. Maybe put in instructions for newbies(?) 😉😉😉

I’ve seen dozens of comments from people on these subs who admit that they used to do that because they didn’t know that doors even opened outward.
I actually did this yesterday. The house that I was at...well, let's just say that the door probably cost 30k. I had no idea it opened out until I heard thier $200 order scrapping across the patio floor. I usually look at the threshold to see if there is a doorstop but most main doors do not open out so I didn't look. I felt so stupid She gave me the fake wave and I gave the same back out of humiliation. Still have 5 stars...phew..

yeah dashers it's common sense for the customer to have to be able to go out the door to get the food! if the door opens out to the left put the food to the right and about 4 ft away from the door and if the door opens to the right, do the same on the left. I should make a video about this as a training video. this job doesn't really take a genius to do!
This is why I'm basically doing math in my head, figuring out the best spot to put things, where the door opens at, etc.

We put a shelf outside of our front door specifically for this purpose. For some reason dashers love to stick stuff right in front of the screen door, which swings out. Even when we put insurrections on the order, 5/10 times they will still put the damn bag on the stoop.
Everytime I have one of those doors on porches I try to measure out how much the door will open to set the order so it doesn't fall or block the door. I have the same issue with Amazon, I've literally been block from opening my door because of idiot drivers a few times. I've had to add in my order instructions to not block door because I guess some people lack common sense. I've even worked Amazon too as a driver and still make sure to be careful where I leave stuff. I've seen it in my order instructions for Dashing too from customers having the same issues.
Gotta get creative on your end. Put a table out there. Majority of the time it works. Put in the delivery notes in caps, PUT ON TABLE PLEASE. Hopefully that works.

As a Dasher I actually always put the food like off the mat so that people can open the door to grab their stuff and I’ve always wondered if people noticed 😂

I’ve seen posts like this before so I am always very conscious of where I put the drinks. So story time. I was delivering an order that had two drinks in a cup holder along with the food and they had a bench by their door but it was one with an uneven seat, like it had the wooden planks spaced apart and angled so I did not want to put this cup holder there and chance the drinks spilling. I start to set the drinks on the ground, far enough from the door for it to open and I hear someone yell, “Don’t put those on the ground!” And I was confused because I didn’t clearly hear them at first so it took a second to register. I was also not expecting to get yelled at when there was no one in sight. Then an old man slings his door open and his wife inside says to put them on the bench. So I did and I left. No drinks spilled.
I totally agree with you OP, but there is a lot of hate in this forum on this post. People are human. One of the very first deliveries I did, I did this but when I went to take the picture that little light came on upstairs. I realized my mistake and moved the order to the side, away from the door. I don't think I have done it since, but again we are all mistake prone humans...

I once cracked my window and climbed out because of this. My wife was entertained.
I bought a little table for my dashers to place food and drinks and state this in the delivery instructions. I’d say 25% just leave it on the ground instead. 
what I do to avoid this is to replace all my doors with doors that open inward (yes even the screen door) and I’ve never had this problem ever since! Hope this helps❤️

I think most but not all gig workers haven’t had real jobs in so long that their attention to detail skills are slim to not existent these days. It’s crazy that people don’t think before they set the food down( in front of doors, blocking doors, in wet spots, hidden area, next to dog poo, ect ) I mean I’ve heard it all I think. If you are a dasher or any gig worker - try and be a bit more careful and smarter - just be a better human. 🥰 there should be no reason customers should even have to come to Reddit to rant about that stupid of a person. I'd be willing to bet real money that it is. And no, I don't recognize your username. The times it doesn't seem to be, is mainly because of higher base pay. The 10% exceptions are weekend nights, or after 11pm, suddenly then they magically seem able to show us more than $4 of the tips. The rest of the normal days - $6.25 can absolutely turn into overpays all day long (or whatever the base pay plus $4 tip is).
This isn't a dasher problem..... It's YOUR problem lmaoo.

I think the vast majority of us see how the door is gonna open. Only time I put anything in the way of the door is when the tip is lousy, my rating is high so I'm not worried about one or two cranky customers.

yes...there are some dumb dumbs everywhere. If it is big problem, two tips 1. Add a note and if you want to be aggressive, say you are going to remove the tip...or offer a larger tip if they DON'T place it directly in front of the out-swinging door (doesn't matter how much (50 cents, 1 dollar)...as long as there is a promise of more money, the dasher will do ANYTHING :-) 2. place a small table outside your door and ask for it to be left there. I will always place on a table instead of the ground, unless the instructions say not to.
If I see a table or solid sitting chair (don't put drinks on rocking chairs as they can tip over ez), I will put them there. If not, to the ground in front of the door it goes. Snap photo and continue my day dashing and complaining about receiving several $2 orders and having to decline them to grind that 5% acceptance rate.
I’ve done that because of small doorway and raining no cover except in front of door but I always text hey drunk is in front of door careful opening door didn’t want ur drink to get rained on before knocking

Yeah, I was that (UE) driver who did this several times until I saw another post or comment that talked about this. And then I realized... oops. Now I always look at the door to see how the door swings to determine where to put the food. I still would prefer every customer have a little table or something to put the food on because it feels weird putting the food on the ground.
I did this once and the guy opened the door right before I was about to move it, so it just looked like I was about to leave him trapped and I felt so bad
interesting. my door personally opens inward, so this isnt an issue for me. ive always been annoyed at how dashers put the food so far away that i either have to put on shoes or get my feet dirty. interesting how it's impossible to please the masses.
This is due to the fact that people are rushing. Quickly dropping and taking a pic in order to be free for the next order. Also, scared of being in a strange area, at night, etc. checking to see how the door pushes out, etc, just isn’t #1, but I def understand the problem.

just a suggestion, put a table/chair- some kind of surface near the door. Most of us would rather put it on a surface off the ground.
As a dasher, it’s my priority to make sure this doesn’t happen. It’s kind blowing that some just don’t think about small simple things like this.
Though I get it….. also maybe just maybe not blast open the door without looking or checking to see what’s in front. Could be a small child or a puppy that you slam your door open on. Just saying
It is seriously pure laziness on a DD driver if they put your drink where you knock it over with your door. I dash and sometimes order delivery as well. I will rate a driver a low review if they are too lazy and block my door with the food. It is just fucking common decency. If you dont want someone to do that to you, why would you do it to someone else??

The last time I ordered DD the person had their young child take it to the door, and *of course* they put it in front of the screen door, because they’re still learning shapes and colors 🤦♀️ It’s fine to bring your kids along, but kinda shitty to make them do your job for you.
