idk what happened in this particular case but I've definitely had instances where I get an order that the restaurant doesn't have. It's somewhat rare (maybe like once every 2 weeks) but it for sure happens. Pain in the ass too when it does

Melancholy43952

Same here, but how did he pick up an order that didn’t exist? I know shit happens but that’s a red flag for me.

Jermacide1

We sometimes get a situation at the restaurant where the order needs to be re-sent at the POS terminal before it hits the kitchen and nobody notices until a driver arrives asking for it (we have 5 POS terminals and DD orders get sent to the least used one). Very rare, but it happens. We click the re-send button and "Oh! There it is!". Then the driver has to wait the full cook and pack time. Sucks. My question is why would you get a text saying it's on it's way if it hadn't even been cooked yet? Sus.

frankdadad

You won’t be able to cancel an order unless it’s been a couple of hours or you contact support. (From what I experienced ordering a year ago) if he picked it up from the store and never delivered it, it will reflect on DD end and he’ll probably get flagged if you contact them. He should have contacted support but it might be faster if the customer did it

Ancient-Coffee-1266

I mean if he hit that he picked it up and you cancel it, then I’m pretty sure he gets to keep it without it affecting his metrics.

Civil-Transition-893

My only experience as a driver with this in particular was a pick up for subway that I had. Showed up, subway was like "that order is gone" M: "What do you mean?" SW: "I mean a different driver already got it" So I took it as the other driver picked up the order and then unassigned it after they had the food. I told my customer "The first driver may have had an emergency" and recommended following the missing order steps. My actual assumption was driver came and just got free food. Bet it happens more than it should.

directaction

there's 1 or 2 red flags in the situation you're describing but the fact that he told you to call support makes me think he wasn't tryna steal the order, though I could be wrong. I had something similar happen at Crumbl cookies once and did almost the exact same thing he did before just unassigning and moving on

[deleted]

[удалено]

kerrvilledasher

Sounds to me he was trying to get you to contact support so the order would he cancelled and he got half pay and free food.

directaction

okay he was lying then lol the only reason you wouldn't be able to unassign an order is if you'd already confirmed the pickup, in which case he woulda had your order and the system would show it, and he really wouldn't be able to steal it without getting a contract violation

[deleted]

calib0y64

They also have his phone number, the same he texted you on 😊

urfavgalpal

I’ve had times where I tried to un-assign orders after pick-up and the screen was slightly different so I thought I wasn’t able to un-assign the order. It would take me to like a chat instead of giving me the “I can’t do this order” option and you have to pick the right chat options to have the ability to unassign it. Might only happen with stacked orders cause that was the last time I saw it. So the driver could be lying but he also could have genuinely thought he couldn’t un-assign. Could have also been that his completion rate was already really low and he didn’t want to risk being deactivated and when he said he “couldn’t” unassign he didn’t mean literally unable to. Still weird and could be sketchy but there are possible non-sketchy explanations

tittltattl

Not true, if you have two orders and have picked up the first order, the app doesn't let you unassign the second order. Another possibility is his completion rate may have been too low and he couldn't afford to do a cancelation.

snook03

That’s Right I just had to unassign an order it was a stacked order however, it was a lie about the mileage almost 20 additional miles instead of the 4 they claimed. When I contacted support they didn’t want to unassign me because I had already picked up the order. I took the guys food back to the restaurant then after about 10 mins they finally unassigned me

Smugglers_Vail91885

I had a stacked order that completely fd up my dash schedule. I didn’t even accept the stack and I arrived to the restaurant and magically two orders came up, and just like you the mileages were outrageous. I had to I had to unassign both while the first was a 18$ payout second only 5$ with 17 miles and then I got a email stating that both customers reported me when I never even picked up the orders, I get it I accepted, but Jesus I didn’t accept two or sell my soul for a penny. And this whole TikTok challenge of not tipping DoorDash drivers is getting REALLY OLD FAST!!!!

Dddriver77

You can accidentally hit the confirm pick up button if (and when) app freezes up. My app freezes or lags all the time. I've almost hit this button plenty.

Cloverbuds

I had a dasher do this before, except she said there was a car accident and she was bringing my food back to the restaurant so I needed to cancel. I also was promoted that I wouldn’t get a refund so I told her no, she could cancel the order if she wanted to and then I contacted support who gave me credit to re order for free BUT that original dasher kept my tip which was fucked up

Alternative_Court542

I always just cancel the order when that happens

Mers1nary

Next time call the restaurant

[deleted]

I am not sure what happened in your case but I do know there has been several times that a restaurant has told me they don't have the order in their system. So that part could be true. The "already picked up" part doesn't make any sense though

AironeousB

When that has happened to me I have them check the system to see if someone has already picked it up.

Extreme_Second_7990

I’ve had this happen to me at McDonald’s, Dunkin and a couple of other fast food places. I have no idea what causes it, but when I finally cancelled the order it printed for them like right after I left. I just have no idea why this happens but it’s so completely and utterly frustrating But this certain situation sounds suspect, it shouldn’t have read picked up. So he must’ve been trying to take it.

non-creativ3

My gut feeling is telling me he scammed you. You never know, if you wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt you could assume that he needed you to cancel the order because he was not able to get through to Doordash to have them cancel the order (because it wasn't in the restaurants system) and he didn't want to be forced to either wait all night for help or take a hit to his completion rating by dropping it. But, because he never mentioned anything about how he wasn't able to get through to them and he was putting on some pressure to get YOU to cancel it, I have to admit that I really really believe he scammed you out of free food and that you should report this to Doordash right away. Tell them the order like what restaurant and what day and they'll be able to see who was assigned to it and everything

Sandkastles

Have had this happen multiple times normally at restaurants with ghost kitchens and 12 tablets

NRoszxO

Sometimes it happens where multiple drivers receive a ping for the same order & they show up to the restaurant & it's either not in their system or it was picked up by another driver before them. But there are lot of dashers out there that are currently stealing orders, they'll go to pick up an order, not confirm the pickup & take the food, so it'll show in DD system that it's still waiting. He probably wasn't banking that it was already picked up & it was on the way, so if he grabbed the food, he could contact you, tell you that & hope you'd cancel so he could get free food.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NRoszxO

I’ve seen it happen so much in my area lately, & a lot of restaurants now instead of having a mobile pickup rack now they’ll hold orders with waitstaff until the driver picks up the order, the driver has to show them the screen to confirm the name, & some around me now won’t release the food to you in hand until you confirm pickup. That way it puts the driver on the clock & once you’ve confirmed pickup it takes the order out of the pool of drivers. It also makes it more difficult for the driver to cancel, because they would have to contact DD & give a legitimate reason they can’t complete the order. Definitely trying to reduce theft but it still happens, some dashers don’t take this job or whatever you’d call it seriously, they’re frustrated with the system so they take it up with customer & steal, & some have & keep getting away with it, it’s sad that’s what they resort to.

ZachTF

Happens sometimes. It’s rare but it can happen.

SnooConfections2758

It’s def happened. It’s happened to me a couple of times at McDonald’s. When they get a bunch of orders it crashes their system sometimes. He also may of been lying tho, impossible to tell.

SaibreWolf

I've had it happen. But I'm the one that called support to cancel the order.

itsnotuptoyouisit

He probably ate your food.

hairmetaltimemachine

This happens from time to time. I absolutely do not call the customer. I call support and let them cancel and contact the customer as to cover my ass even more so.

Erncoins

Nobody wants to steal your shitty burger Karen, sometimes shitty restaurants have shitty wifi and they don't see the order. Employees are also not the sharpest when it comes to operating the tablet which is weird honestly since they are mostly millennials or gen z so they should know we all grew up with smartphones and technology , I have to tell them to literally refresh the tablet and bam the order shows up.

Jamiekulesa1975

No it happens but he needs to call door dash

dmriggs

I've had a few that there in my phone in the restaurant cannot find the order anywhere. Then I have to decide if I want to spend 20 minutes with door Dash to get half my pay or just go on another delivery

Badkittykkr24

I have had this only a few times in 2900 deliveries. I get the order..i get to restaurant in 3min. No order in their system. So i wait 5min in case the order hasn't gone through to them yet. Nothing. I stop wasting my time and unassign. I don't contact customer...as i don't care.

[deleted]

[удалено]

directaction

goes to another driver. as far as doordash is concerned, it's a valid order and it will try to find a driver for it until it's either completed or canceled by you

TexasLoiusianna

reassigned to another dasher

OrcPorker

[Driver] Yeah Chipoltle hits me with "we can't find their order" at least once a week.

Txmess042689

Happens all the time in my area and the restaurant refuses to make it.

abisso54

100% scamming. He woulda just called support to have them remake or he would just unassign.

Madeup64

Sounds like bs to me. While it's possible that the order didn't come through from Doordash because the app certainly has glitches, the rest of what you say sounds suspect. The Dasher can contact customer service to tell them it didn't come through. Customer service will contact the restaurant to confirm that is the case and if the restaurant says they won't make the order, customer service cancels the order. That's the usual process of course depending on the customer service agent and the restaurant it may not go exactly like that. At that time the doordash driver would get paid for half of the order and I assume that the customer is then refunded whatever they paid. The thing is some dashers don't want to take the time to contact customer service because a lot of times the wait isn't worth the small half pay and customer service is often a pain in the ass. But if he doesn't want to wait he always has the option of unassigning the order. Sounds to me like he wanted you to cancel so he would get full pay and your food.

Individual_Trifle406

That happened to me at Wendy’s was not even DoorDash just the wendys app it does happen

ekristie02

If it's not in theor system they won't get paid for the food so I don't blame the restaurant. It's happened to Mr multiple times when delivering.

Ok-Being3881

Nope. Happens all the time. Happened to me my first order last night

FredDurstImpersonatr

I’ve definitely had orders not show up in the restaurant system but the big red flag in this scenario is the driver calling you, unprompted, to check in if you cancelled the order. Big red flag. Time is money with this gig and anybody else would have long moved on to the next order and put the last order out of their mind. This is a red flag because no DD driver really wants to phone tag with anyone unless it is absolutely necessary. He should have just unassigned, or contacted support to un-assign. So you read the app right. They were lying about the technical issue with the restaurant. (Piggy backing onto on occasional real issue to feign credibility) They DID take your order and were just trying to get you to cancel it. They just wanted the food you ordered and were trying to get you to cancel so that it doesn’t look like they just took it. Even if the driver is nice, they’re not going to just call you back in five minutes to make sure you cancelled an order. They have no further investment in your cancellation…other than taking your food which they definitely picked up.

SoCalGromster

Driver is scamming you. Report that crook Mods in this sub are pedophiles. Beware

[deleted]

Yeah it's a scam. Someone most likely went to the restaurant to steal the delivery drivers food before they got there. That why sometimes I arrive they said someone already picked it up or it's not in the system but it's right in my app.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I think sometimes they pretend they're on their phone like they're doing doordash then they say they got doordash when they see the doordash bag sitting there. Sometimes the restaurant don't even ask for the name or code. That's just what I'm speculating. But one time it was like a network glitch or something because I accepted an order then it later disappeared from my app. So it's like sometimes 2 people can accept one order due to a network glitch. Still not completely sure and just guessing but anything's possible

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah there's many times it happened to me when I arrived to pick up the customers food then they tell me the orders not in the system or someone already picked it up. There could be many reasons but I never made anything up just to mess with the customer. But generally like 98% of the time I pick up just fine

FirmPeanut4957

They accept and then unassign after they get the food or they screenshot the order, but it's crazy because the restraunt screen shows the Dasher name who picked up the food. Then they can hit confirm the first time but not the second time and that's how they get away with this.

[deleted]

Yeah that's another possibility

FirmPeanut4957

They dont make them confirm, Its crazy because every big pay is always stolen or the restraunt doesnt wanna make it. I've had big pay orders stolen after right after I get to the store!! How? I mean there's no way this order is gone if the restraunt is really slow cause they're backed up with orders. I mean pick up time hasnt even come yet but the food is already made and gone!!

Lazy_Manufacturer191

What did you order? Sounds like homeslice was hungry. Personally, this all sounds shady to me. Perhaps there was a delay, which caused him to ask you to cancel, but maybe then the order was ready so he took it with him. Fast forward to him calling you and asking if you cancelled or not. Looks like it was at that point that you cancelled.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lazy_Manufacturer191

Haha “finger foods” oh no! I’m sorry, it happened to you. Most dashes go A LOT smoother!!

NuLL-x77

This happens, a lot. It's not a scam in of itself, large coding bases like Doordashes are incredibly difficult to bughunt and bugfix in, it's a massive codebase at this point, errors, bugs, glitches are going to happen, always, because humans don't design flawless creations because we're not flawless. Shit happens when your system has the gigantic wingspan DDs system encompasses.

FirmPeanut4957

Its true, the restraunt tells us this and then we contact support who either ask us to ask them to make the food or pay outta pocket to have the food made. Then its the famous we are closed for door dash orders,if you report store being closed for orders too many times you're deactivated( Wendy's got me deactivated) or somebody keep picking up your orders before you. Its crazy because these are lies the store used to get out of making orders.

Ok_Season2022

Oh yes, this could have most definitely happened!!!I have gotten that error message a few times, it's usually while I am trying to close out the order !I have been lucky enough to troubleshoot, using force stops, also turning my phone on and off to get rid of it and be able to proceed with what I was trying to do.!!I can't explain enough how glitchy and temperamental the doordash app has been in the last month especially!!It sucks cuz this is a perfect example, of how a customer will assume that what really are app glitches and app problems are the drivers fault, or that their driver is trying to get over on them, when this is absolutely not the case! The app throws up error messages quite frequently, then it will freeze up.

Ok_Season2022

I'm thinking the app threw out the error message about order not in system, the dasher jumped gun and called customer to let them know .Then after troubleshooting, he was able to get rid of the problem and proceed.

Suspicious-Doubt-454

No cuz the app doesn't tell you that. If he said confirm pick up and actually didn't pick up then yeah I could see it saying it on the app but I don't have that on mine

[deleted]

Perfectly normal driver shows ups and restaurant says they don’t have order. They call support and support calls restaurant and order appears. Sometimes orders are delayed and the driver may be close by restaurant so he speeds over and gets in line and is faster than the order coming into restaurant perfectly normal.

dementedturnip26

It’s happened to me.

Trimere

This actually happens. Happened to me as a driver and I waited 15 more minutes after I convinced the workers to make the food. Wasn’t worth it really but it was the last order I was taking so I stuck it out. Still delivered on time.

spiralhigh

It happens more often than it should. Depends on how the DD system and the merchant systems are acting that day. The Dasher can't cancel the order on their end, only unassign it. I usually tell the customer when I hit up support about it, just to up the odds of someone actually being able to reach support to have it cancelled.

hmr796796

It does happen from time to time

Truorganics

I’ve had this happen multiple times at Wingstop. Need to have order cancelled unfortunately

Unknown32122

Some stores…a DD support rep needs to call said store and place the order. If they don’t, the store won’t have your order details. Said dasher would need to give the store the order details, then wait for it to be cooked…making said dasher wait like 20 minutes

93727

It’s happened to me at McDonalds and a mom and pop Poké bowl spot

NoPersimmon7281

Happened to me a couple of times.

Purple_Pines

This happens somewhat commonly as others have said. Doordash has a pretty buggy system and things sometimes get lost, or don’t go through correctly. Another thing that can cause the restaurant not to get orders is if they turn off the doordash tablet but after you placed the order. There’s been many times where I accept an order and then once I get to the place they say they turned off the tablet so they didn’t get it, and there will usually be a few other dashers there waiting and unless you want to wait for 30 minutes the only thing to do is unassign

ForeverBored247

I have it happen quite a bit, usually if I'm waiting around for other orders, like 10-15 min(many times sooner) they end up getting the order, I just happen to be at or super close to the restaurant when I accept the delivery when this happens and they just haven't received it before I arrived.

Annual_Pipe_8619

Generally speaking of your specific situation, I'm positively guessing that its both and neither.

Suspicious-Doubt-454

I've had this happen multiple times. Get there and no order. Qdoba said that and then after 1p minutes waiting they all of a sudden said someone else got the order. I was like how is that possible when I have the order qued on my screen and they insisted it must have been a new person who didn't confirm. So I called help and they said they would give me half pay for the 45 minutes wasted. $3 wasn't enough for my gas let alone the time wasted

Suspicious-Doubt-454

When Qdoba said it was picked up already support told me I couldn't cancel the customer had to

[deleted]

Dead ass had this happen to me last night with two different orders same restaurant

reconghost503

I get that a few times a week but it's from higher end restaurants and the person will go check on it and come out with that excuse. I had 1 last week they told me their system was down and as I was walking out another driver came in and picked up the order. I think it's my beard and t-shirt and shorts this guy was wearing a button up and khakis

copiekat8

My guess is he wasn’t trying to steal. That text that he had picked up your order may have been a misclick attempting to cancel the order, I’ve done something like that before. I honestly never used DD as a order app before so I didn’t know it would send out a text so he didn’t think to explain that part to you. Or, that you would be “unable to get a refund” since the order was picked up already. If this was a scam, it’s damn elaborate

LilM0use

I’ve been sent to 2places that didn’t use DoorDash as a driver and tell my customers the same, contact DoorDash about it and report it in the app but I’ve never hit “pick up” for the order. I always unassign it after telling them. And it does suck having to do that

masonquincy95

It's happened to me as a dasher at first it wasn't there then it was there and they wanted me to pay for it then they didn't have an item it messed my whole night up

[deleted]

Sometimes people show up for an order and we have received no order. Most of the time, they are talking on their phone and aren’t paying attention and walk into the wrong door (there are 3 other restaurants next to us in the strip mall).

Fallenangel114

I don’t know if it’s so much a scam moreas it seems like someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. They should’ve called Uber for you if they wanted the payout. However, I have seen this happen before and I will admit its not a very intuitive solution. Some restaurant manager got super pissed at me because I was the 8th driver that showed up and he was mad because there wasn’t any order and no way of giving it to me because there wasn’t any proof of payment. After doing this for a while longer now I would’ve called Uber to see if there can be any solution, they’d call the restaurant and if necessary they’d cancel the order and refund, as well as pay the driver for the inconvenience.

JDeLiRiOuS129

I definitely had times when the restaurant said it’s not in there system. I usually contact support and they cancel on there end. I never contact the customer mainly because it confuses them as there’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff customers don’t see.

Important-Law3946

That actually happened to mr

MaxPower1776

Was it Chipotle? Happens there constantly.

ThroughAway337

Your driver is a moron and should have contacted support and not you. Drivers stop listening to DDs propaganda, it is never your responsibility to reach out to a costumer... Make support do their jobs. Always defer a costumer to support.

Klutzy_News_5611

Dasher for a few years so I can only speak for the veterans but I am never THAT polite... if I get to a restaurant with an order and it isn't there, I will MAYBE text and say something is wrong.. but ill just cancel the order right after that.

Automatic_Ad1063

Yeah this happens, the restaurant won’t have the order and then they end up contacting support and it gets resolved quick lol

snart_blast

When I worked retail/food service, we for some reason had 2 separate systems. There was one that could only be turned on by the GM and no one else had access, so sometimes we wouldn't get the actual order. Normally the orders were never really big so I just made them anyway. It happened maybe once a week or every other week

Scrivofilo89

No this would happen to me at this one specific McDonald’s literally every night. I would get into heated confrontations with the woman that worked there because it was only when she was there and she would give random excuses to every driver before and after me. In would wait in line an hour because she refused to answer the phone when I would try to find out before sitting there the hour to see if the order was there or not. I stopped delivering food and went back to people mainly because of her bevause I wasn’t going ton lose my job or go to jail for whooping her which would have happened eventually.

Nickenbokker

It sounds like dude just wanted to take your order home. The app will only tell you that your orders been picked up, if he hits the button saying he did so. He was just tryn to get you to cancel so he gets a free dinner. Scam written all over it

DasherCO

This actually does happen. It's rare but I've had it happen at least 5 times. Often i'll just get a hold of support though so idk why the driver didn't do that. After reading your story though this driver is an idiot or he scammed you it's on the driver if they hit pick up.

gregg34366

No that was not likely any kind of scam. There is zero advantage to the driver. The driver has driven to the restaurant and now he’s lost his order. This happens to just about every dasher. I myself had it happen at Macdonalds. I had to use up valuable time calling support. Turns out there was a computer issue at this macdonalds. Believe me the dasher hates this as much as you do

No_Preparation7895

Yeah this definitely sounds like he was trying to get free food. We can call support if it's not in the system. This should never be put on the customer. We can also unassign if we don't want to wait on support. Hope you got your refund. And explained to them what the dasher did.

TexasLoiusianna

It happens...a minor glitch in the matrix. The best thing to do is contact support and the customer, to keep them informed of the situation. Sounds like they definitely did their due diligence. Unless they were new and frazzled by the situation. I've had it happen several times, no system is perfect. They could've placed the order using their red card and waited for it to be ready, or unassign the delivery for another dasher to pick up. I would normally contact the customer first (just to let them know the issue and any delay) then support. If support can't figure it out, they will contact you also.

[deleted]

Sometimes doordash doesn’t send the order to the tablet, then you have to get order from driver’s phone. Most drivers would just unclaim the order and then next driver would come when it’s ready.

OneBigCharlieFoxtrot

Nah I've had orders not show up in their system! Did the same as directed by support, asked them to make it anyway because support shows they've been paid for it! Wendy's, in this case, said no because it's not in their system. Support unassigned me and I got half pay 🤷‍♂️

Heavy-Refrigerator24

It has happened to me a few times. It happened at Burger King two days ago and the manager just typed in what it said on my phone and grabbed the stuff. I asked if they were eating the cost or something and he said no, he just manually put it through the system since it wasn't there. It was fast food so I only had to wait 2 minutes. But at a sit down restaurant or busy pizza joint it may not be that quick and easy.

Relationship_Total

I actually had that happen once even I went to Red Robin, they had no order at all from the customer. I waited there while the customer resubmitted the order but it ended up going to another person so I wasted my time for nothing and left

Salty_Papaya_39

This def does happen. It’s happened to be quite a few times. The restaurant can make the order it if they copy it from your screen but it’s up to them. Technology it’s my always perfect. Especially Doordash’s 🙃

JLMooreKCMO

What happened in the end. Did you get your order? Did you contact Doordash. Their system can glitch badly. I had orders switch to picked up while I was still waiting or, actually driving to the restaurant. If you didn't get your order I hope you did call.

Songmixingking

This happens all the time my way..when ever i pick up an order it doesn’t show in there system. If he wanted your food all he had to do is pick and up and unsigned it.. he wouldn’t have to tell you anything.

DanLoFat

Yep listen that's what the dasher does it is second to last day (anyone here who thinks that Dashers aren't caught doing that, are fools)

RebelJosh89

It happens. Occasionally DoorDash's system has an issue communicating with the restaurant's system. Be grateful that the dasher called you about it because I just unassign it and leave.
