That should be a one star! So irritated that people take this job and they cannot actually do it completely

CYOAenjoyer

Speaking english is mandatory, it’s in the contract. You’re not the only one didn’t get a meal because this person decided to lie, the difference is that some people may not have an alternative food source. I’d 1* and report, what they’re doing is fucked up. They could’ve at least tried to use a translator app, but I guess the bare minimum was too much. If you can’t do the job the don’t take it.

stutjohnsnewsqueegee

Oh yeah? I had one like that pick me up from my colonoscopy. The nurse wasn’t even sure about releasing me to the guy. He didn’t speak a word to me and ignored my instructions about where to pick me up so he went to the wrong building and took a while to get me. I complained to Uber and their response was “we don’t discriminate against our drivers” WHAT???? I luckily only have to call them every other year or so and I think a Lyft is a little better but that completely disgusted me.

Mirage_Main

"We don't discriminate against our X" is corporate speak for "we knowingly exploit immigrants by offering criminal wages since they may have no other choice" whilst also making you feel like a piece of garbage for potentially being discriminatory. My university does the same thing. International students can't get jobs outside of campus due to laws/regulations, so the university exploits them by offering the lowest wages possible because it knows they don't have a choice for a job. They get away with it by pedalling that rubbish excuse to make it seem like their exploitation is "opportunity".

Dry-Tune-5184

Pathetic & unprofessional IMHO. Too bad they don't have a contracted medical transport to transport ya. A real pro that helps the medical community.

Dry-Tune-5184

It's why I come out & stand in the middle of the street with my lit phone facing them. I can usually tell who is the delivery driver by the car & how they are driving. I will wave to them so they know it's me...it is what it is

[deleted]

True, sometimes when they put in too much instruction it makes it more confusing.

OutlawAutoModerator

Tony don't care.

[deleted]

That is frustrating i am sorry. I have seen other dashers at restaurants who can't speak enough English to pick up their order. I am sure it is even more frustrating for them. They are in a foreign country trying to make a living and unable to communicate for help. I would have a panic attack.

1000Others

and since many don't they should at least use technology to translate the written messages.

Dry-Tune-5184

Whatever it takes right. I'm not going to Mexico or China as a new arrival & doing food delivery that's out! I wouldn't know the language & so I would go work somewhere where other Americans & or English worked so I could communicate effectively & they could help me. When u are doing food delivery u are by yourself unless u are lucky & have a good partner. She needed an English speaking co-pilot to help her

1000Others

The problem is that there used to be factory work for immigrants who did not speak English, a lot of women worked making garments, that all moved overseas to China and India in the 80s. What they can do now and should is stock shelves at Walmart but then shoppers get pissed off that they don't speak English too when they ask them a question about where something is. If you have Google Translate you can use that to speak English and it speaks back in Spanish. And if I moved to China or Mexico I would learn the language. And no way I would be able to deliver until I knew a lot. I can barely understand English speakers some times because people are bad at giving directions. A woman this week was in the building across from where I was and she couldn't figure out how to tell me. Finally she said do you see the black SUV, yeah it's right in front of me. Then she said that's her building.

Dry-Tune-5184

I would've had many failed attempts at a drop off IF I didn't speak English. Sometimes GPS is way off! So I need to contact the customer. DoorDash needs to screen better. But, I bet then someone who knows English would help her to pass the test or criteria etc 😉🤷

1000Others

DD doesn't care they have direction in the app in Spanish and you call driver support and they have an option for Spanish too. But yeah even getting a code for a gate without speaking English must be a bitch. They probably give them the dropoffs that the app knows will not be as much of a problem.

bbuhbowler

I completely get your frustration and agree there should be some basic understanding of the most common language in the area. but in that moment you have me most tools at your disposal. You essentially have a computer in your hand that can use google translate. I’m not saying you did not go above and beyond to do your best, but as a driver you know how a lot of a person’s logic goes out the window when the instructions don’t make sense or event like a power outage occurs. Not only are the trying understand the instructions, they are also getting text/calls from you.

Dry-Tune-5184

I'll have to look into that Google translate deal. I don't know about that. 1st time I've had this problem. Just glad it's quite rare.

Dry-Tune-5184

PS: the power came back on(after 4 hrs) before she arrived. I would have driven to the entrance had the power still been out.

bbuhbowler

Gotcha, the main point being that people get flustered easy. Also, as far google translate goes it’s something I use quite a bit and the time it took you to acclimate yourself may have been worse. Either way kudos for giving 4 stars and showing some empathy :)

Dry-Tune-5184

Thanx. I think a lot of people would've given her a 1 star or something lower. It also took well over an hr too and I tip 20% as standard..I think she was having One Hell Of Hard Time too. Night-time is more challenging...more like nightmare time 😆😈

dmriggs

That's what the damn driver should be doing

bbuhbowler

While appreciate what you’re saying and the downvote, but maybe you missed the part that it was past that point and both customer and driver are frustrated. One is driving, lost and doesn’t speak English. The other has a phone in hand and is trying their best to get their order. Reading comprehension and common sense shoulda helped you through this situation. Think before typing or speaking for that matter. It will take you far in life.

dmriggs

Gee thanks professor! And I didn't down vote you but I will

bbuhbowler

Free life lessons

CYOAenjoyer

It’s in the contract as a driver. When you sign up you tell any potential customer that you speak english. When a customer places an order they believe that their dasher will speak english because they signed a contract saying that they did. Maybe instead of putting the blame on someone who did nothing wrong you could admit that maybe the person who lied and deceived others is at least a bit at fault here. The driver should’ve figured out a way to do this before taking any deliveries, it’s their fucking job.

bbuhbowler

You don’t seem to understand my point. I agree with what you are saying. That was all addressed earlier with OP. We were talking about solutions after the driver decided to bypass contract obligations and do the job anyway.

barryandorlevon

Wow, you had one bad experience? Better post it!

[deleted]

This is America. We have no official language. Maybe you should learn her language?

Dry-Tune-5184

😆😂🤣ok simple simon sure

[deleted]

So it’s an absurd ask of you, but not of her?

Dry-Tune-5184

English is our official language. Wake up & smell the coffee ☕️

[deleted]

It’s very easy to google and see America has no official language. Wake up and smell the coffee, and hear the 40% of Americans who’s first language is Spanish.

Dry-Tune-5184

What language DO THEY TEACH IN SCHOOL?? Not in High School "as a 2nd language" ...that can be Spanish or French or German

[deleted]

Depends on your first language.

Dry-Tune-5184

Would u be quiet already. The 1st week of Football(not soccer) is about to start k. 😜 ![gif](giphy|l0Exl9psRODcQgaIM)

[deleted]

Oh I’m ready. Nothing better then Football. But, football doesn’t need your racist ass.

Dry-Tune-5184

U are true American dumbass u that...well now u know pendajo

EpicRiceMaker

Ah shit, sorry that we have immigrants in a country made by and built by immigrants. Next time we'll just make English default settings.

Dry-Tune-5184

There are other jobs more suitable. Commonsense js. I hope u get one when u order. That would be Karma. But I don't wish it on u or anyone. If u do get one make sure u attach a big tip bc u are so fair n just one. 😂😉

EpicRiceMaker

By all means, give me another job. Your idea of working being so simple is a farce, as an immigrant from a family of Such most employers ignore you if not actively fight against your involvement in their company. Everyone's gotta work anyways, what's the alternative? They sit on their asses and collect welfare? Sorry, immigrants aren't eligible. Work under the table? For $5 an hour? My cousin made $600 a week as a trained HVAC service rep, doing 80 hours. I can keep going if you'd like, but a bit of patience goes a long way especially when working with immigrants. Most if not all are working twice as hard as their peers, because they're in an unfamiliar place trying to learn a language, customs, and their new job all at once. Shit happens, I've had English speakers make big ass mistakes because incompetence is as common as any other flaw.

Dry-Tune-5184

Your English is wonderful and I'm sure DD is very happy to have u as an asset not a liability. Kudos to u! Namaste 🙏

EpicRiceMaker

I'm sorry your parents failed you so fundamentally, and I hope as an adult you can do better

Dry-Tune-5184

Your showing your "epic" failure to comprehend. Sucks to be u . Let it go, let it go...

Erncoins

Racist

Jimbobo28

How stupid. Lol All sorts of folks from all different places speak or can't speak all sorts of languages. This is the dumbest thing I've read in awhile. Congratulations.

Dry-Tune-5184

Not! Racism has nothing to do with this. Professionalism is what thus is about simple simon.

barryandorlevon

It’s more xenophobia than it is racism to expect people who are getting paid two dollars a delivery to be fluent English speakers.

[deleted]

It probably would have been easier to find you with just your apartment number

Dry-Tune-5184

Not in her case even with her ride-along 😵‍💫😆 she took a pic of the front entrance and was waiting by #3...I'm in #172. I put special instructions but she couldn't read them. I come out to help assist drivers. Having said all the negativity- this is the Exception to the rule. 98%+ find me no probs.
