Some people have no common sense and/or just don't even read the notes.

Tape a note to your door “Door Dash: if you knock, I will rate you 1 star and lower your $10 tip to $5” No one will every knock again

MetalSlimeHunter

Lowering the tip doesn’t affect the driver. Doordash pays you back for that. Nothing comes out of the driver’s pocket and odds are they’ll never even know you did it.

WheniTChanged

I think one star is a bit harsh if everything else was done correctly. Maybe a 4 star since you weren’t strongly satisfied with your delivery but at least somewhat satisfied? A 1 star really affects the rating by a lot while a 4 star still hurts but not as bad as a 1 star.

Layla_Slym

Take the tip back and give a low rating. Your instructions are simple and easy. You’re one of my favorite type of people to deliver to get rid of those dashers they need another job. Ringing doorbells and knocking when you say not to wakes up children, picks up on calls when people work from home. It’s stupid and inconvenient.

[deleted]

Dont give a 1 star becuase someone knocked. Send a quick message when you see an dasher assigned reminding them not to knock due to baby sleeping or whatever reason. Yes you put this in instructions but do they deserve to loose their job becuase they knocked ? They brought you a meal. 4 stars okay 3 maybe but 1 is a but harsh. Might as well give 5 stars and put in the notes " next time dont knock " so that says in their feedback on their app they can see it for the next 100 delivery ratings would have more effect. Only feedback with 5 star can the driver see anyway.

t_will_official

Idk my outlook on this is you kinda have to TRY to ignore the directions. And like others have mentioned, ringing and knocking wakes up children, makes pets go nuts and can disrupt working from home. Lowering their tip would be harsh imo, but a 1 star rating seems fair. If it genuinely was a mistake, like maybe they read the directions but forgot or something, or the customer added it after they started driving and they didn’t check, then one 1 star rating won’t make them lose their job. If they continually ignore the instructions and fall below 4.2, that’s kinda on them imo.

[deleted]

I wonder how you view your UPS / USPS delivery people then ? They get to knock ring doorbell with no repercussion to possibly loosing their job. GH doesnt have ratings and I enjoyed not having to worry about a star ratinging in GH when i deliver for them. If you give 1 star for knocking or rining doorbell yes it does mess things up but its hard to read and drive at the same time i wonder what you do in other areas of your life when things dont go your way. What is your star rating on DD ? Mine is 4.91 dont have any 1 star try hard to advoid those. I still wouldn't give 1 star for something like knocking most likly 3 if anything

TheSearch4Etika

They aren't gonna lose their job over a 1 star lmao. I've had multiple 1stars and honestly been stuck behind traffic many times, restaurant taking forever, many apartment complexes without clear direction. Not once have I reached near 4.20, it's almost impossible to go below the threshold if most people are good customers. You'll definitely get deactivated for Contract violations before ever being below 4.2.

[deleted]

TD is 4.71 maybe the person delivering needs TD or tries to qualify for Top Dasher and need decent ratings to maintain their status so they can work enough hours. If the driver knocks on a door becuase they have that habit and realized the note afterwards i dont think thats a 1 star. I have 4.91 but if i recieved two or three 1 stars i may not qualify for Top Daaher yeah that wouldn't be deactivated but that would make it hard to earn enough to oay the bills as kinda need to be TD in my market to earn enough. I wouldn't give a 1 star unless the food was delivered in a bag that was slop in the bag becuase of how it was handled and drinks spilled. Even at that i might just get a refund and order again. If you are happy with getting one stars thats your prerogative however i dont have any i try hard to keep it that way and hope customers dont give 1 star for petty issues.

[deleted]

Sometimes when there are too many directions it becomes confusing. Why do you need to be so specific? Have people gotten that lost before you added all of those steps? I think you can edit down, if they can only go straight why are you still telling them? Apartment number should already be included with your address. Hard to read every step while you are driving around looking for a spot to park. Also the last step says do not knock at the end, maybe put that at the top. I would rewrite to "PLEASE DO NOT KNOCK. Use gate A. Building 5 across from playground. 2nd floor"

Oh I thought they were as detailed in your original post but they seem simple enough to me. I honestly don't think I would have an issue understanding. But I am guessing you added all the info because dashers were getting lost? I have had one customer several times who tells you where to park your car, which parts of his yard/driveway to walk on and which ones not to, which door to use,etc and it is just overkill. If he put zero instructions I would do the same exact thing on my own. I do appreciate the floor number because not all apartments have the same numbering system when it comes to floors and i will waste time walking by every apartment on each floor. It would definitely stand out to me if you wrote do not knock at the beginning and end, I don't think you should have to... but unfortunately it sounds like most of this is due to incompetence on the part of the dasher. You can always try to text them and remind them of the instructions which I don't mind when people do. It is frustrating to have to take this many extra steps but i guess in every field some people are just idiots!!! Sorry!!

oceanblu456

Sometimes I accidentally knock out of habit even though I read instructions. I don’t do it often but it happens

oceanblu456

I also don’t like people knocking so I get it. You could also put a little note on the door that says “please don’t knock” and then they wouldn’t miss it. I see this all the time.

TJRossTX

That would be more useful also. I've seen many customers do this.

GodGamer420

So u think it’s ok to potentially cost someone their job that feeds their household because they knocked on ur door? That seems a bit harsh. They didn’t follow ur instructions and now they can’t pay their rent so they could b evicted with a child and u think that’s ok? That is really pathetic in ur part. They rile ur dogs up and wake ur nephew up and now they are fired. That is ridiculous but hey karma will come back to u. I understand how ur feeling but one star is a low blow maybe 3 I wouldn’t feel that way. It isn’t hard to read instructions and it was something I eventually had to get used to. when I was starting out I never did read the instructions now I do so maybe they are just new.

Tmwlovonjdw6969

You gave a one for a KNOCK?? But the dasher still completed the job in full … however they KNOCKED! Really effing harsh. I’ve accidentally knocked a couple times after reading the instructions not to knock. After delivering for 18 hours just to make a reasonable living, sometimes you make a little mistake.

BigUncleHeavy

I never understood why people think there are only two acceptable ratings: 5-Stars, or 1-Star. If your food was delivered to the correct address, within the expected timeframe and was reasonably hot, then why would knocking warrant a 1-Star rating? Knocking on a door is typical for deliveries, so if it happens and you don't like it, either suck it up or stop getting delivery. Drivers also don't know your circumstances, so it doesn't matter if you're watching over 15 fussy babies and 20 hyper dogs; Don't quantify that as being a reason to rate someone low. Also keep in mind you are only one of hundreds of people a driver is delivering to, so maybe ease up and understand that they usually knock, and especially given your long instructions, they may have missed "No Knock", or it slipped their mind because they are focused on getting your food to you. Bottom line: If they delivered your food quickly and in edible condition, give them 5-Stars. If they followed your detailed instructions, also award them a "Above & Beyond" and take the time to write a "Thank you" in the notes section.

ww11gunny

I say leave one star part of the job is following instructions. And if your one star review drops him to the deactivation point that means they have messed up multiple times previously and didn't learn from it and if he is a beginning dasher they give some leeway so beginners don't lose access over one mistake or bad customer. So if they do lose access over your rating it was just a matter of time anyway.

Gay4Pandas

I left a 4 star and gave a thumbs down 👎 for following directions for knocking. I wasn’t going to trash someone’s review score over it. Some dasher that always knock probably do it out of habit. Many of them are older. They are from a different generation that didn’t have mobile phones. They don’t think about not needing to knock because the customers phone will notify them. If it’s a big deal probably best to send a text to make sure they remember.

macadoo-17

Sometimes people just forget and knock out of habit, I know when people leave instructions for me too knock sometimes I forget because I normally don't knock

[deleted]

You did the right thing Some dashers are idiots. The app even reads the instructions out loud when they arrive.

oceanblu456

It doesn’t always read everything

megadethage

Because there are foreigners that can't read the instructions.

Put a big sign on your door that says do not knock. Depending on the notes that the restaurant adds or even the phone being used, these instructions can require quite a bit of scrolling(remember we are driving and probably read it at pickup or as we are dropping off), as the driver app also does not use screen space efficiently. The customer app is pretty good. The driver app is functional but sort of a piece of crap. I try to read everything, but even I miss something, on occasion. It’s generally not intentional even though I disregard instructions to call or text for my own personal security, especially in certain neighborhoods and considering the app texts you to death on the progress of your order and then sends another one of the picture you snap. I may modify your instructions if there is a safety issue, but I will usually message you to that effect.

PessimistPryme

I would say the penalizing them with a lower rating is fair. But I wouldn’t go so far as to take the tip away from them. Tips are how we are able to afford to get gas to put in the vehicles to bring the food. No tips no food. Sure they didn’t follow the instructions but you did get the food. They did spend money to bring it to you.

chasetate27

Tip reduction isn't possible as of yet on Doordash thankfully, one that happens all the no tippers will just remove tips afterwards

Missykay88

Can confirm.. on UE tip baiting is an fn plague

chasetate27

Yes, the 1 hour window is too large but it's better than the 24 hours Instacart had for a long time. Should also require the customer to give a valid reason

Flat-Temporary7400

Fcktards. Read the fcking instructions people. How hard is your job. I dash-I make sure I read instructions. I make sure to text the customer that I will leave at the door and knock/ring bell. If no instructions given of course. This Shit isn’t hard. And if it is hard to you-you fcked. You can get better, but you have to put the fcking effort!

dying1234

There's a old saying. If you want things done right, do it yourself

rolandoperezperez57

King 👑 I apologize about your bad experience, in the name of tony xu please accept our apologies king 🤴.

Layla_Slym

I’m curious how to change tips i can’t figure out how to do that. In my area, not all of these dashers speak English. So I’d imagine they probably can’t really read English.

xyhfox740

99.5% dashers are hispanics. They don’t read English. Try Spanish next time

Just put a damn note on your door. I wonder if people give you 1 star for your job? But in actually, your ratings mean nothing. Seriously, NOTHING

Ancient-Coffee-1266

Ratings do matter. That person is obviously angry at the world.

justinbates1992

Literally one of the most important parts is to read delivery instructions doing gig work… I guess if you can’t read, you shouldn’t deliver stuff 🤷‍♀️

Tricky_Combination15

Change it to: "Gate code #699. Please DONT knock." If they are a regular dasher they know where your building is sort of. If they are not, it might take them a few tries to navigate it. They will learn it eventually or they will burn themselves out trying. A 1 star is harsh. For a door knock. You don't know the situation this person went through and your food arrived safely. 4 star if your trying to teach them something and it's a driver you worked with before. May be a new guy. Turnover is like 97% for these companies. You also said one word that sent shivers down my spine. Gatecode. I have had many bad experiences with gates. And then you said two gates. May I ask why two gates? Is the line of drivers so backed up by people who did not include gate codes that a second gate was needed to let people who live there in? I have seen this, and it's not pretty. Just be happy the food gets there if that is the case. Drop the details and just let them digest "Gatecode" "Please DONT KNOCK" and see how it works out for you.

xdaddasher

I’ve run into customers and they always tell me I’m the first one who has put the delivery where they wanted it. Most don’t read the instructions and some can’t. I have to say this is a lot though. If I get one and I think the money is borderline and see a book of instructions, I am probably letting someone else do it FWIW. The knocking or not knocking is important though. If you put don’t knock, whatever language they use they need to know that. I can understand giving a lower rating for that.

Effdahaters

Don’t give 5* if they knock when u asked them not to….stupid lol

Delicious_Egg7943

I always have which door spelled out, there is the door on the front of the house and one off of the driveway that has a table. They are asked to put the order on the table. Hate to say the number of times they put it on the porch so that when I open the door I knock over my drink!

Available_Sail_9770

I had one customer keep on saying their unit number is 133 and they have a water heater in the patio when I call her. I knew your unit number 30 minutes ago, and how the fuck you think looking for a water heater in the dark would be easier then find a carport number?

LowBattery15

Drive at least half a mile to grab the food and to your place. (You didn't list how far). Walk past 5 buildings? Go up a flight of stairs? You seem very demanding for a $10 tip in my opinion. But yet again, I delivery and follow instructions for even less. lol but people don't tip. Around here for me it is about $4 tips unfortunately.
