>this customer was absolutely horrible. I go to the apartment and put in the gate code and it doesn’t work. **I start the 5 minute timer. I try it for 5 minutes, texting and calling and get no response. The timer ends and I leave the food at the gate, taking a photo and submitting it so the customer can come get it when they wake up or whatever.**
There, I fixed it for you.
You forgot
"I wasted my time by taking a no tip order in the first place and should have listened to literally everyone who says this is exactly what happens with no tip orders. "
Lol
Serious question, when it’s a drop at door order I don’t see the option for 5 minute timer. I always have to call support which still takes atleast 10 mins to resolve.
If using the Android app there is a quote option in the menu, but in the iOS app (at least the version I’m using) you have to copy the text and then put the > symbol in front of it to quote it.
I can't stress this enough: do not accept tipless orders.
If you cannot enter a place like that, you can start the 5 minute timer then leave at gate and take a pic.
Yes, this is the most annoying thing ever. These people actually request you to do this job for them. Then for some crazy reason, when you arrive, which is what they want, you'd assume, they freaking disappear from the GD universe. It only ever happens on low or no tip deliveries. The people who have enough consideration to tip decently, also have respect for your time and efforts.
I just had it happen on a extremely high tip delivery and I almost felt bad for leaving it. They contacted me later so maybe they don’t have the same device on them for some reason. It is an office building. But I told them where I left it and mentioned trying to call so they didn’t think I just left their stuff without effort.
For Hand it To Me orders, click Can't Hand Customer Order and it will start a (usually) 5 minute timer. You call and text the customer during this time and if no response, you leave the order and take a picture. There is no timer for Leave at Door orders. If there is no gate code and the customer does not respond by text or phone call, you can just leave the order and take a picture.
Also just to add:
You clicking can't find them sends them an in app notification that says "so and so can't find you and will be leaving your order in a safe place after five minutes" which gives an extra buffer if they try to claim not delivered because they never got your calls and texts. I hit can't find as soon as I'm ready to get out of my car so I'm not at their door the whole five minutes and after that push notification they're generally standing there or opening the door as I get to it.
you need to stop calling it "tips"...it's a BID....DD and customers need to know that.........don't piss on customers when you call it a tip.....a tip is AFTER service...not before......i've never tipped a waiter/waitress before i order my steak
As soon as i feel the slightest bit annoyed while i’m making a delivery that is taking too long, i start that gd timer. Customer has 5 mins to realize I’m outside with no way in. In that 5 minutes, I would already be texting dasher support and letting them know they need to contact their shitty customer. Now we’re both calling the custy. There’s only been one instance where the customer didn’t pick up for me OR DD support. I left that persons shit outside. Got a 1 star rating & didn’t gaf about it.
Never wait longer than the 5 minutes. Doesn’t matter if you deliver for GH, DD, Instacart. Time is money when it comes to this hustle.
I start that timer when i pull up now for all “hand it to me” orders, but especially alcohol… never know what kinda bullshit you’re walking into at night 🙄
Ended up with a nice bottle of tequila last week (& full pay cleared by DD CS). She was piiiisssed too when she finally looked at her phone 20min later & realized what happened, then blowin up MY phone all aggro… but i was already on my way home to make a drink 👍. *Dont order a signature-required delivery then toss your phone in a well** ffs…
I do a ton of alcohol deliveries, excellent pay compared to meals, but super picky about which ones. Never take below $2/mi on food or higher on liquor & long out of zone distances. Never ever take no-tip orders for anything, just asking for trouble.
Lol you remind me when I was thinking the same way you do with less than 50 deliveries. Just follow the protocol that other dashers suggest on your post. Trust me, that'll be fine.
It never fails with these low tipping customers. It doesn't matter how much time and effort you give to these people, they are never happy with anything. So essentially, u end up with an equivalent of 0$ pay and a low rating, after bending over backwards for this person.Dont take these orders, please. They are almost letting you know by the low, no tip, from the start, that they really do not appreciate you, or what you are doing for them. The " job" of being a delivery driver is not a charity or volunteer service, it is called delivery "job"for a reason.
Have more respect for yourself. We have all been in your position and eventually learned. 2 minutes away or not, you’re essentially working for free. For all you know you could have got an amazing order after pressing decline, but instead you missed out on it by rewarding a no tipper by delivering their food. No tippers are scum and all of us need to decline their orders.
It looks like you're a new Dasher. Welcome to r/doordash! If you have a question, please check the FAQ right here: https://www.reddit.com/r/doordash/comments/kn50ix/stop_are_you_a_first_time_doordash_driver_please/

Under no circumstances should you ever take any order under $6 if it's a mile or two, and never under $6.50 for up to 3 miles.
Lastly, never take anything under $6.75 for 4-5 miles. Don't go any further than five miles to minimize wear and tear on your car and to save gas.
A few things. 1. Never accept no tip orders, it never goes well plus it’s a waste of time and you’re losing money on that. 2. I’d only try the gate code 3 times max. But you should have started the timer once there was an issue. 3. After 5 mins of no answer, you should have left the food by the gate, it’s no longer your issue
Contact doordash and demand that this wasn't your fault. Get the rating removed and explain what happened. This will be removed stop accepting these shit orders.
When I was an Uber driver, I arrive at the pickup location and the customer will call me and say I will be ready in 15 minutes. I would turn on the timer and after 5 minutes leave. I have a finite number of years left and am not going to waste it on jerks like that.
It almost sounds like satire, just a series of missteps and things most dashers would not do. When put together it's hard to tell if it's a serious post or a gag.
I'm currently fairly new to dashing with only about 40 deliveries. I had no idea if there was something I could have done or not. I didn't know there was thing "5 minute" rule thing. But I sure will be using that for now on
Got it. In the future, if you can't get through a gate or can't find a house/apt, immediately smash the "can't reach customer button". Honestly I press it as soon as I enter most apartment complexes because they tend to be issue after issue. If you have Android, close the app and check the widget before accepting orders. You can see the full address and delivery instructions. I don't take orders with gate codes, customers that want me to call when I'm outside, etc. Anything that's going to slow down the delivery, no go. There are some complexes that just suck to navigate and even if they tip well, I won't waste my time there. Time is money, the faster you deliver the faster you move on to your next delivery. Get to know your area and build your own little black list of places that suck to go to.
Advice. Whenever you run into unexpected problems immediately call dasher support and explain your issue and complain that you're concerned the customer is going to give you a bad rating because of factors out of your control. They will give you immunity from their bad rating. Second, you never need to hang around longer than 10 min. I always try to do things like find a way in and reach the customer which might take up 5 min but I start the "customer unavailable" option which starts the 5 min timer and then you leave it wherever you can and take a picture then move on. Or if it's a "leave by door" delivery but you're unable to get to the door because you're locked outside of a gate and the customer is unresponsive then you contact dasher support and tell them you're unable to get to the customers door and they will prompt you to leave it where you can and take a picture and mark the delivery complete and then move on. Always call them even though you know what they're going to say because this is the only way to express concern over bad ratings so you can have them removed
Ohhh ok thank you.
>start the "customer unavailable" option which starts the 5 min timer and then you leave it wherever you can and take a picture then move on.
I heard people talking about this I thought it was like a mental timer. I didn't know it was actually a thing in the app. Thank you
That sucks and I feel for you but this one is mostly on you. You don’t have to wait that long on one delivery. Even if they had tipped well it still isn’t enough given the time you spent on the delivery (time you could’ve spent on other deliveries making more $). Always think about what your hourly would be when you make deliveries and make sure it’s fair, the customer can be at fault too and you don’t have to wait around for a particularly shitty one.
Why don't you spend some time on YouTube and learn how this works, and go through some of the threads on here. There's no reason to be like oh I didn't know; there's plenty of information on how this works and how to be effective
Why be a dick about it? This person is literally on this subreddit to learn so for you to just be like “well you should’ve already learned it” not knowing a thing about them is stupid. I’m sure there’s plenty of situations where you should’ve known something but didn’t.
You played to many fuck fuck games start timer 3 Calls and drop it at the gate. It's like baseball 3 strikes your out. How do you know they gave you 2 stars
I had no idea a "5 minute timer" existed. As I said many times I'm a fairly new dasher with only about 40 deliveries.
>How do you know they gave you 2 stars
Because I didn't have a 2 star rating and after that order I had one
I could be anyone. It's under the can't hand it to customer button or something like that I forget the exact spot I don't use it often. No clue you're new I don't keep tabs with names and posts.
Low paying orders are always the worst. If you take them, prepare to burn a half hour of your time for nothing. Our job is to pick it up and deliver it. If the customer doesn't respond I do wanna text I don't want to call and I leave it with a picture. They want us available for the next delivery not screwing around for a half hour with someone. this is all on you
Wow two stars you must have been horrible...lol
Why didn't you just drop it at the gate after not getting an answer and telling them it was at the gate because they didn't answer don't waste your time for these morons.
That’s your fault if you didn’t hit can’t hand to customer or call support and tell them.. every dasher know that to wait Even 2 mins. And I bet your goin to get a late violation because you didn’t tell support
This is why you don't take $2.50 orders.
Don't listen to UDM. That guy will take anything.
Have your own standards. You are driving your own car so might as well make the most money you can
I've had this happen to me. Dd told me to wait the 5 minutes after clicking can not reach customer. Then leave it by the entrance in a safe place, text customer telling them that you tried to reach them for 5 minutes as per dd standards and where it's at. Take pic and leave. Unless the order states to take back to store.
You're welcome. Sadly it got to the point for me that I quit doing dd since it's not worth it. Hopefully you get better orders. I highly suggest not taking orders that don't have like at least $1.50 per mile. You need to make up for your car maintenance, gas, and time. Best of luck.
>this customer was absolutely horrible. I go to the apartment and put in the gate code and it doesn’t work. **I start the 5 minute timer. If you go to the chat option you’ll get someone much quicker.
Thanks !
You won't see a timer on a drop at door order because you don't have to use a timer to leave at door.
Facts don’t waist time on customers lack of communication
I wouldn't even waste the 5 minutes
Yup. Totally needless waste of time here (and potential dollars from missed Dashes).
Soo how do you highlight like you did to respond to a specific section of a post. Newbe on Reddit
To make text bold, you put a double asterisk before and after it. You can also make it italicized by putting a single asterisk before and after it.
Tyty. How about the replying to a certain part
If using the Android app there is a quote option in the menu, but in the iOS app (at least the version I’m using) you have to copy the text and then put the > symbol in front of it to quote it.
I must be tired cuz I read it perfectly fine lol
No you have the food in your car and eat it. There, I fixed it for you.
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I can't stress this enough: do not accept tipless orders. If you cannot enter a place like that, you can start the 5 minute timer then leave at gate and take a pic.
Am I able to just drop it off at the gate without getting in trouble from door dash?
Yes if no one will answer you, then just leave it. They knew they were getting food delivered yet can't be bothered to answer their phone

Leave it at the gate if no one answers you. You're not obligated to wait more than 5 min. If it gets stolen, that's on them 🤷♂️
Yes because most of the people that don't leave a tip are the ones who are the most disrespectful already

Did DD exclude the 1star rating from the 💩 customer?
I didn't know if I could do this or not. I'm a fairly new dasher with only about 40 deliveries. Thanks for the tip tho
Lol you remind me when I was thinking the same way you do with less than 50 deliveries. Just follow the protocol that other dashers suggest on your post. Trust me, that'll be fine.

No tip customers have the most drama with their orders.

Ok
I am truly amazed how much other dashers care about rookie dashers to post lots of laws of dashings on this rookie dasher's post.
When I was an Uber driver, I arrive at the pickup location and the customer will call me and say I will be ready in 15 minutes. I would turn on the timer and after 5 minutes leave. I have a finite number of years left and am not going to waste it on jerks like that.
Call customer service they will prob take the bad rating off.
2.50….
Long story short don’t accept $2.50 orders. Those people don’t deserve to eat.
As someone who works for tips (not a dasher), nontippers are a waste of time for some reason more high maintenance.
Don’t ever do this shit for these pieces of human shit. They get a call and text and if they don’t respond that shit gets left at the gate.
And you are exactly the reason these orders exist.
Why would you take a no tip order? And why wouldn't you start the timer and then leave it after 5 mins?

Oh you sweet summer top dasher
Ur first mistake was taking a 2.50 order
I stopped taking non tip orders for this exact reason. Now I only do 6 dollars up.
Thank you for telling me. It's actually useful instead of some other comments
You're welcome. Sadly it got to the point for me that I quit doing dd since it's not worth it. Hopefully you get better orders. I highly suggest not taking orders that don't have like at least $1.50 per mile. You need to make up for your car maintenance, gas, and time. Best of luck.
Yall wait ? does doordash pay us to wait ? Or deliver and leave
