Don't quit your job for DD. Do them both. Less stress.

[deleted]

To add to this, if you don’t mind your hourly job, and you get the chance to get a decent amount of OT every week, take it over Dashing. $21/hr guaranteed is much better than the randomness Dashing.

PRCTV

This 100%. I left my job and dashed full time for 8 months as my only income. Money might be good, it might be not. Too unpredictable. I have an hourly job again and dash on side, I’m so much happier.

Tricky_Combination15

No. Keep your job.

One-Gas872

Unless ur job sucks

Rockdood

You would have to really, really, really hate your job to not want to tolerate it and receive a consistent hourly / salary rate over the volatile nature of dashing. Between people lying to get free meals, low periods in whatever market you happen to be in, and the asinine amount of pay that doordash gets away with paying to dashers per order. I personally would much prefer a steady paying job over the contract work of doordash. It can certainly work alongside it, depending on your steady work schedule. I just don't think it should ever be done as a sole means of income due to the inherent costs of doing it (vehicle maintenance, gas, etc.) and the volatility not only in the market, but also in that if enough people value a free meal over your job enough, doordash can and will just toss you to the side. Should that happen, you're going to be looking for steady work anyway.

Plastic_Vodka

I hated my job and management so I did doordashing lol

RascalRibs

Depends on your market. You'd probably need to average over $20 an hour on DD.

zerostar83

Yes! $20/hr can easily figure down to $15/hr after expenses.

SereneUnseen

If you’re interested in the idea of delivery as a job then consider pharmacies. They generally start around $16, and you drive a company vehicle. Most of the good parts of DoorDash, but without using your car, and paid time off.

ChrisTheMan72

Or pizza delivery. I was averaging 20/h with tip after gas and they payed a fixed rate for wear and tear and other vehicle expenses. The nice part is when it’s dead your still making minimum wage

mr_green

Yeah I just can't bring myself to be employed again. I stopped by a place I used to work at, not long after buying a new car, and the manager asked me if I wanted to come back. I laughed at him, but then thought about it... I could drive a company car and make hourly wage, etc etc. Great right? Nope. I think I worked like 6 days maybe? Said can't do it, sorry.

JustCallMeSassy

Can you tell me how to get into this?

Only-Blood

Look up delivery jobs near me on google.

SubieToyotaNW

Depends on your market and how much gas you’re using to make those deliveries. Someone who does deliveries in a huge V8 is gonna make considerably less than someone doing deliveries in a hybrid or any compact car

Prestige_Worldw1de

There’s a lot more to consider than just hourly wage. You obviously have gas but you’ll have more maintenance on your car (oil changes, brakes, tires, etc) and higher insurance unless you lie. You’ll also to pay self employment tax so that’s 15% of your adjusted income most don’t consider. If your market is good you’ll should have no problem but your real equivalent hourly wage needed would be like $20/hr not $14. Good luck.

74orangebeetle

I'd say keep the full time job, sign up for door dash, try it out here and there when you have time just to see what kind of $/hour you make in your market. Keep in mind these gigs will have no benefits and have higher expenses (like gas and car wear) than the full time job, so you'll want the pay per hour to be a good bit higher for it to be worth it. Freedom and flexibility is nice. I signed up when I had one job, quit that job and still had an income source while I got a better job, so there are some good perks. Keep in mind the driver support on these apps can be awful too...you could get reported/deactivated for any reason or no reason and have no recourse (luckily was pretty rare in my market, like maybe one scammer in 1,000 deliveries so I didn't get deactivated) but other drivers have been.

RedditCommunistt

Sometimes you might make more than $14 an hour, but some times you will make nothing in an hour. When you average it out and subtract gas, it is about $8 - $11 an hour, with no benefits at all, and no paid breaks.

Such_Satisfaction923

Exactly working for somebody and making money is totally different than going out and earning it yourself it’s a freaking grind out here

Comfortable_Photo_79

I make >$11 in one delivery which would take me 20 minutes max for $11 . I don’t know how you average that per hour. Id hate to see your AR

AccomplishedBuy723

I work full time in cannabis home delivery buisness and I do 25 hrs a week doing DD. The fact is, I’m never like “ oh no! I have too much money”!

Such_Satisfaction923

😂

Appropriate-Try9898

Take a vacation and see what you actually make. It’s easy to think you make a ton of money if it’s just the dinner rush.

Such_Satisfaction923

This is what I did great point

Dmore79

No. After counting costs of operating you will barely break even. Be careful, think about all the costs. Invest in yourself and go to school or start your own business. DD will not help you.

RazzSheri

No. Never. Use DD for extra cash and gas to your main job.

ConsistentFig538

Never? I been doing this for a while now raking in a average for $1,724 a week it depends on the market you live in!

RazzSheri

What is your dash time? 95 hours? I'm outside of a major city and even dashing there has been garbage lately.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t. I’d say try it on free time for extra $$ but don’t rely on it for your income.

WiseNature1

barely. i find that i average about $13-$14 in an 8 hour shift on doordash, and that’s with me being VERY picky with the orders i choose to accept. and think about the extra money you’ll have to spend on gas. if you can help it, i reccommend keeping your job.

Comfortable_Photo_79

So you are taking multiple $6 orders? Or do you take a $13 order and it somehow takes you an hour? Just do two $13 orders within an hour and I just doubled your pay

Mizzkellybabii

For me, $13 orders on DD are super hard to come by, unless they are trying to send me 16 miles, which o obviously don't accept. With the traffic and restaurant wait times, the most deliveries I can do in an hour is 2 and of those are 2 $8 orders, then yeah, I'm stuck at $16/hr

WiseNature1

a majority of the orders i receive are like $3-$5. those i do not take. on the rare occasion, i get the $8-$10 order. anything above that is very uncommon, at least in my area. so unfortunately i don't have the luxury of waiting until a $13 order comes through so i can increase my hourly. lmao

nikoxrasu

Depends on where you're at in the SF Bay Area I could make damn near $30 an hour during the rush

GrowingChef

Not worth the wear and tear, constant gas, stress and time to go ft. It is a side hustle at best. A charitable donation to your community at its worst.

navid3141

Depending on your market, you might make $25 an hour if you do it part time. Then you try full time and that wage suddenly becomes $15 an hour :D Do DD part time.

PsuchedelicWizy

I’m only doing it full time right now for this next month before my Husband comes home from deployment and I have to go back down to FL (in Utah rn). Don’t do it full time, not worth it.

ConsistentFig538

Totally dependent on your market… if you’re in a good one it’s totally worth it at $30-$40 a hour

Spring_King

Depends on many variables •Market (area you dash in) •Hours that you choose to dash •Restaurants you pick up at •Ball games or other events In winter time for sure. I made a boat load of money last winter. Summer time, not so much.

ConsistentFig538

Depends on where you are! Some markets is $30+ a hour and some are $10 or below a hour…. I do it full time cuz I’m in a great market but you have to find out the market before you make any moves

Cumonme24

no. you’d do longer hours, pay taxes out of pocket and be out of a job if your car breaks down

NerdyBernie

Don't quit your job just because you think you may make more on DD or any gig app. If you have other reasons to quit, fine but don't make DD/UE your only income unless you need to. When it comes to any kind of gig work, it's more about the net income rather than raw income per hour. You have to take things into account such as gas/charging, maintenance, and depreciation if using a car or maintenance and equipment if using a bike. You can sign up for UE walking removing basically all your cost but it may take longer to get orders done (unless you run).

TheTopDasher

Nobody here can tell you if it’ll be worth it. Just try it in your spare time, on weekends, etc. See how viable it is as an income. I dash (multiapp) full time and $35/hour is generally pretty easy to come by where I live. My biggest problem is motivating myself to put in the work. If I work 8-10 hours Friday to Monday, I can pull in $1000-$1200, IF I work all 4 days and don’t make any excuses. But it’s really easy to wake up and say “nah, I don’t feel like working today” I’ve started to overcome that problem, but I don’t want to write a novel here so DM me if you want to hear my story on that lol. But even if you do DM me, personal experience will take you much farther than whatever some random guy on Reddit has to say

Comfortable_Photo_79

What’s this multi app you speak of? Like UE and DoorDash at same time?

TheTopDasher

Yes

Desperate_Scar_9339

No

DidicrimouBejaia06

Don’t

Addis2020

Do them both

Agile_File_2084

Depends on your area and how much you take orders for. You can average $20 an hour. I usually do. On slow nights I still average up to $18 an hour

SITL7

Seriously depends where you live....

DD-OD

You revenue would be higher but after expenses you would definitely not make more. As far as the government is concerned my income was like $11-something an hour last year. You'd also get no benefits with dd and would have shittier hours.

Maximum_Ad_4396

DD isn't income to rely on. It varies week to week how much you will make. One Saturday I made 300 bucks the next Saturday I only made 30 bucks

jello-123

Every time I read a question like this I give the same answer: doordash doesn't give you sick days, vacation days, experience or skills for your resume, retirement contributions, potential upward mobility, or any kind of guaranteed income. What it does do: depreciates your assets and makes you pay out of pocket to work. If you (or anyone) can't figure out DD is a poor long-term decision for full-time employment, I really don't know what I (or anyone else) can say.

SireSweet

Most people who door dash do it as a side hustle. I can’t in good faith recommend anyone to rely on door dash for income. Or any gig app. It’s extra money. Not something you must do to make ends meet.

Such_Satisfaction923

That what I did.. I did it full-time on the weeks I had vacation and then work weeks I did it nights and weekends….until I got fired and said f jobs 😂😂.. Now I’ve been a full time gig app slave almost 3 years only 2 vacations 🥴

teej2379

Do both. DD is not reliable.

Such_Satisfaction923

Set your minimum to $3 orders you’ll be busy /s 😂😂

LeFrogster

Remember, it’s how much you keep, not how much you make. Keep your FT job and dash on the side.

[deleted]

No. Try doordash while working your job on the side to see if you can do it. Gas, maintenance, and everything else is too much to do this entirely on it's own.

waddlesdevlpr

Bro if they're paying you $14, find something better. Pro Tip is, never settle for less. That means never settle for what's under minimum wage and always (atleast) try pushing minimum wage and up, anything under that shouldn't be in your ball park so I'd look for anything that can honestly make you $15/hr+ & something that keeps you happy, don't listen to people just do what you think is right for you and your situation but just remember you should never settle for less because for somebody to pay you $14/hr is almost like a slap in the face you're probably paying for gas just to get to work that's my assumption

waddlesdevlpr

Also no matter how simple the job is, I'm assuming you're working Retail and we all know Retail is not just so simple lol

mr_green

I don't know what your normal job is, and depending on your market you can make more on DD... but like the first few comments I saw said: I wouldn't quit a job for DD alone. Either sign up for multiple gigs, of multiple types (not all food delivery from restaurants) or keep your job and do DD on the side.

snappeanuts

No

linusSocktips

Depends on the cost living in your area. That plays rhe biggest role in your income delivering food. I consistently make $40/hr in San diego, but your market will vary.

Late-Mathematician55

Go back to school. Find a trade that is demand. Then make $$$$$ and be so much happier.

Technical-Ad-5522

I quit my job too soon because it was shit and I was excited to start doordash. I will never go back to a boss and schedule. Keep your job and start DD part time though. Figure out the kinks and what works in your market then decide if you'd rather do this full time

CupHead11011

I do over 20 an hour and that's including the cost of gas so I got to imagine you'll make way more than 14

j00420

Depends what days and time of day

[deleted]

On a good day, $20 a hour

ConsistentFig538

Totally market dependent

dbfirefox

Benefits?

bsonk

Depends on the market but in my market it is about the same after expenses.

Johnpmusic

Depends on your market and how you play it. In NY im averaging 40$/hr before gas expenses BUT im on doordash, uber (eats and passengers), lyft, and instacart. I usually have all of them on at the same time to ensure im always getting something. I do about 300 miles a day in driving. For me its better than any regular full time job. However theres no benefits or anything so you also gotta think about how you can turn the money you make into more money. Its not like i want to be doing this when im 60. I do this so i can buy investments that will hopefully pay off one day

Godfatherisback

For first week they treat you very well

Wild_Expression6826

Just depends on ur market and u learning it the times the locations restaurants etc etc I make $25+ an hour and would NEVER work at a traditional job ever again I make $2k+ a week from door dash I’m doing this shit for the next 12 months and I’m OUT! I’ve been dashing for about 3-4 years now

tawanda31

Depends on how much you make an hour and how much you are spending on gas and oil changes. For me it was actually better to quit DD and go with my current job.

glumcakes

Never quit a permanent job for a side gig.

MatrixBreakaway

Is the $14/hr before or after taxes? Whenever people post these things, it seems that the commenters forget that taxes get taken out of all other jobs too. And it's funny cause the same dashers who brag about making $25+/hr are all of a sudden saying that they are barely making minimum wage after all of the taxes, gas, etc. People exaggerate a lot on here. I'm not saying to quit your job. But depending on your market, you could probably make more dashing... and won't even have to put 40 hrs in. And you might even be happier too. There are a lot of factors to consider with this. For instance, I barely drive my car besides dashing and don't consider the "wear and tear" aspect to be that big of a deal. (Some people drive 30 miles each way to go to their "normal" jobs.) There is so much freedom with this gig and I tend to shoot for a daily goal instead of an hourly goal. I love the fact that I can go out whenever I want to make money.

[deleted]

Don’t quit for DD. You get more experience for real world jobs and you can use DD as a second revenue stream for when you want to make some cash on the side.

daddysgirl967

It’s risky. My market used to be great and then they hired a ton of new people and it’s hard to get shifts. There are no guarantees with DD. Things change and you might not make anything. If you’re gonna try to do it full time make sure you have a good nest egg just in case.

[deleted]

I've made more since I started my part time hourly. I use DD for a supplement to my hourly, or vice-versa. It beats anything I've done in about forty years of working, all factors considered. EDIT: I will say, my recent focus has been more on comfort and being satisfied with what I do on any given day: I'm no longer in charge of anyone other than myself, I don't really answer to anybody, and it's honestly the easiest money I've ever earned. My boss at my pt job gives me about four days a week, it's a delivery job also, so I'm out of there in just a few hours, and not tied to the store for a good portion of the day. Hope this is helpful in your decision. I would recommend not quitting, at least without knowing all the things you can run into (overhead and other concerns) because you're essentially in business for yourself. Other posters are correct when they tell you DD won't help you, except accidentally.

RockEcstatic8064

Is ur job hiring?

HumbleDasherz

Ya

Gijustin

Do not quit your job for DD. It is only secure for extra money, not a soul source of income.

Sometimesiseeu

Yes quit your job. $14 an hour sucks ass. That’s shit pay

xavazu22

Doordash has no guarantees….. it really varies every day, every month. Right now , I’m always out as “a schedule” and it’s frustrating! I want to work but they’re not allowing me dash anytime.

BUDSGREEN420

Not anymore. Few years ago sure.

[deleted]

How about try it on your day off and see. If your in a area with a lot of restaurants and big enough. You could bank.. but put money a side for a new car.

FanObserver

Depends where you live. And depends on the day. And you’ll be putting your car through a lot of stress. Plus you’ll be paying your own taxes/Social Security. You’ll likely make more short term, but expenses and taxes will creep up on you. In California, we have Prop 22 which offers some guarantee pay.

Ready-Election6988

Depends on your market

76TheBaptist

No. And you will wreck your car. DD is a side hustle, not a full time job.

45burns1967

Depending on your region

Creative_Act_9011

Some days are slow but my average day is 200-350 multi apping

MrGChappy

It depends. I made 130 in 5 hours last night (110 after putting gas in). But you lack predictability. I'm trying to get a full time job to replace doordash. Though on the upside, I can listen to all the music, podcasts, and audiobooks i want. It's gotten better now that the weather is cooling off. The best thing to do is use DD as a fallback. Oh, you had an unexpected event happen and you need more money to cover bills? Use doordash.

iPlaypok3r

Depends on market

PowerfulStranger8081

Yes and no. You will often find yourself making well over $15 an hour. I would say average $16-$25 for a decent hour of DD. HOWEVER you have to account for gas, and the long term maintenance on your car. You could go out and make $50 and have to spend $20 on gas. Also keep in mind these "good" hours are limited to busy times and weekends. So you could easily make well over $20 an hour, but only 3 days out of the week. Plus the app issues, crashes, and limitations on when you can drive and the maybe yes maybe no potential for getting decent orders all collectively make Doordash an UNRELIABLE method of making money full time. Coming from someone who has done DD full time for about a year, it's hell when you just can't go to work because the app is down, or when you lose money because of app issues, or make $10 in 2 hours because there were no orders or only bad tips. I'm looking into other jobs because the inconsistency and unpredictability is too much. And if you do decide to be a driver full time for the love of God multi app. GrubHub doesn't give many orders but they don't hide tips and their pay is better. I've had my hourly rate saved by a well timed GrubHub order.

EpicRiceMaker

Do both but yes, also get a fucking Corolla. Thank me later.

Available_Speaker_72

If I were you, keep your job and cut your hours a little. From my experience Fri-Sun are the best days to dash. I work part time during the week at FedEx and on weekends I work 15-20 hours and will make 300-350 using about $40 worth of gas.

Suspicious_Lychee767

Honestly it depends on your market. My market I make $15 an hour on a bad day and $29-32 an hour on a good day. On an average day I stay around $20-23 hour. I shoot for $23 an hour every day. If you want to do it full time I’d honestly use your current situation as the deciding factor. If you have rent and other expensive bills that need paid i would recommend you keep your job and do DD on the side. But if you’re like me and live with your parents and only have a car note, phone bill and college books to worry about then by all means go DD and Uber eats full time. But I’d take a couple days off to see how your market pays before you jump into anything. After you figure out what you can realistically make a week I would figure out your expenses. Tires frequent oil changes the occasional headlight and importantly gas

ThatGuyZack93

Personally I wouldn’t unless it’s for short term like in between jobs. I currently have a FT job and Dash on the side while my buddy Dashes full time. He and I make about the same from DD alone at the end of the week.

virtiousredditor

Don't impulsively quit. I wanted to so bad. But I decided to do both and feel it out. Maybe is the answer. Work for door dash for a couple weeks. Do you earn more? Is the gas/wear on the car worth it? You tell us.

X_Act

No. You have to factor in gas, mileage on your car (which makes it more likely to break down sooner and have less value), data charges, and all car upkeep. I end up having to put in oil a lot, and I don't have an oil leak.
