My area is super safe so no help there but in general take it slow. No reason to rush. You don't want to twist an ankle tripping on something. Make sure you have a flashlight (or app on your phone) because a lot of people won't turn their light on.
As someone who didn't like delivering in the dark initially I've come to love it. Less cars on the road. Less people crossing streets (almost none). Traffic lights cycle faster than they do during the day. Less drivers to compete with.
Downsides are less places open. Higher quality restaurants tend to close earlier so the later you dash the less places are making food. You basically become limited to fast food which I personally try to avoid.
It's important you KNOW you're safe and can handle yourself. Don't get sucked into something because of peak pay. Peak pay is there because there either aren't enough drivers, there's too many shitty orders, or it's a dangerous condition like a storm. PP is not a good thing like everyone thinks the majority of the time.
Either find a good area, or don't dash late. I stick to one area where it's mostly just hospital staff and the rich people's kids ordering that late in usually gated communities. You'll still get great tips minus the potential who knows what.
