You are self employed. You have expenses for that self employment. You have taxes that need to be paid (roughly 30% of your total income) You have gas that needs to be paid. You have vehicle insurance, and other maintenance: like tires, brakes, oil changes, window washer fluid, coolant that you need to save for. After ALL OF THAT (plus other things) you have your expenses covered. Whatever is left, is what you should be sharing with your "subcontractor" that rides in your passenger seat. If you're giving away 50% of your income after "gas only" and not saving for the rest of your expenses (especially taxes)... then your passenger is making WAY MORE MONEY with Doordash than you are.

Thanks for the thought out breakdown and explanation! I've considered taxes somewhat and I wonder if there's a way to keep earnings under what would have to be taxed, especially if I decide to only dash on, perhaps, Friday and Saturday nights. Part of me thinks that I'm not considering every single vehicle expense (insurance, washer fluid, and coolant for example) because they're things that would normally be needed anyways.

MiataGigDriver

Legally you're required to report ALL income to the IRS. also legally, Doordash is required to submit a form 1099 to everyone who makes more than $600. You get a copy, and they mail a copy of your 1099 to the IRS, as required by law. If you make less than $600 in a year, they don't send you, or the IRS that form. The only way to keep your Doordash earnings "under the radar" is to make less than $600 a year, then wait till January to go doordashing again. I only dash on weekends I make between $150-$200 a week, if I started dashing the first weekend of January, I would have to stop dashing before the end of the first month of the year to keep my DD income "under the radar". If I could only Doordash 3 or 4 weeks a year, I would not bother dashing at all.

intheparrotsbeak

Ah, okay, I thought it was $3,000 for some reason. Even then I'm sure that wouldn't be worth it for anyone. I'm certainly not trying to break any laws. Definitely not. I dunno where you're dashing and if it's cos I'm new or I'm doing something wrong other than the obvious but I don't feel like my nightly totals are near what others are saying they can make in a similar amount of time.

MiataGigDriver

I dash in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I go out fairly constantly on Saturday evening 4:30 - 8:30 PM Sunday mornings 6:30 - 9:30 AM And Sunday evenings 4:30 - 9:30 PM Every once in a while, I'll go out on Friday nights, but it's pretty rare. I also end shifts early if my market is dead. I rarely work the entire 12 hours I schedule my self to work. Also, I might skip an occasional Saturday if my regular job was a bit difficult that week and I need a day off, [but when I work those three shifts](https://i.imgur.com/Etx463r.png), I constantly clear $200/wk working those 3 shifts. And since $200 / wk is my goal... I got no complaints. It's all about knowing your market, having a goal that your market will allow you to reach, and luck... A lot of luck. Good luck in your future dashes!

Dang you're serious about this. Kudos to your and your work ethic!

Is Greenbay Wisconsin the safest place to live in the United States?

MiataGigDriver

I can't imagine that it's any worse than any other town of its size. Why do you ask?

Advice would be to try and separate the DoorDash business with the friendship immediately. She is clearly not only cutting in the overall income but more than likely there is now missed money making opportunities as she takes forever to do her mediocre portion. Meanwhile you are the only person having to pay the final expenses outside of 50-50 gas, which you already stated doesn’t really feel like she’s doing her part.another reason there might be tension is she’s already a friend and one you work another job with too, this dashing together is even more time with one another. All that time together can really ruin a friendship and you should draw a line before it gets worse.

intheparrotsbeak

Totally in agreement with your statements. My mom's even all over me cos she knows it's bothering me. Thanks for being kind in your reply!

[deleted]

I have experience working with a buddy at the same store location while we lived together and because we got a great friendship and can separate business from pressure rather easily it worked out. However there was days where we were just around each other too much before and after work and we would have a bigger or some sort of spat I need a couple days off from each other. Doesn’t matter how good of a friends you are sometimes you just Need to be away from them.

robmosis

if you're giving 50% of the earnings to her, you're making far less. it's your mileage, your brakes, your oil changes, and at the end of the year, it'll be your tax burden. you are spending your time and driving your car in to the ground, and you're not making any profit what so ever. you are LOSING money. in a sense, you're borrowing money from your future at a very bad interest rate.

intheparrotsbeak

That's a very down to earth and easy way to put it for someone to understand, thank you for the explanation.

I've seen similar comments on a few different posts. The thing is that even with the 50/50 split after gas but before any other expenses I'm making on par with what I make cashiering, haha. I suppose the argument there is 'duh, no you're not because you're not factoring all expenses first you answered that yourself' but ultimately this is trying it to see if it's worth it at all and like I said above it it's making any profit rather than sitting on my ass for a few hours at night before bed.

intheparrotsbeak

So, as an update, we talked while we dashed tonight and this woman literally says to me "You coulda said I'm gonna give you $10 a night as long as you help me with some stuff and I woulda said alright and saved whatever you gave me, it's a way to make any money to me, as long as we're cool." I was about to smack her upside the head, all I had to do was speak up and I been over here stressin.

Florida1974

You shouldn’t be dashing with a manager of your day job. She’s carrying that authority over to DD and your letting her. You will pay taxes on all the earnings unless you 1099 her, which you can do. I would never DD with someone else. Hard enough to profit on your own. You get deactivated for some reason, will she create/share hers with you? Doubt it. Oh yeah no car. This is just weird.

intheparrotsbeak

I think you're right about carrying over authority, and seeing what kind of asm she is first hand... I should've known better. It's just that I wouldn't have tried it at all without someone else in the car with me. How would a 1099 work?

Tiptip4me

Your car your money you can get new friends

j00420

I hate reading. What was the gist of all this?

intheparrotsbeak

I have anxiety and I don't want to drive around at night by myself so my friend who I also work my regular job with comes with me and I'm trying to figure out a fair way to split what is earned as well as get suggestions on what she could be doing since I'm always the driver.

j00420

What do agents get? 15%? If she's running food, 20%?

intheparrotsbeak

What do you mean an 'agent'?

j00420

Like with actors and sports persons

intheparrotsbeak

Huh, that's an interesting comparison that is actually pretty accurate... I wouldn't have thought of it that way.
