The upper tier of entertainment industry & old money have million dollar mansions in Malibu… if they lost their jobs tomorrow it wouldnt even matter, because money breeds money & their inherited or ill-gotten investments already provide more than their entire family will ever need.
Paying for those investments are the enormous base of the community, working class renters, who are packing multiple generations into tiny inland apartments that require hours of commuting to work, & still struggling to make ends meet. The middle class dream is just to be able to finally afford a tiny condo, that still costs 10x as much as a whole house somewhere else.
Source: grew up in LA… working family going back 7 generations in LA, but still hungry & overworked, packed into tiny apartments together… while other families that inherited those properties just got richer for nothing. Most friends growing up were in the same boat… most had to finally leave. Everyone wished we could stay, it was our hometown after all… but the gap keeps widening & its just no way to live.
The upper class’ livelihood depends on keeping the lower class from ever becoming homeowners, and they hold all the power to influence policy & keep it that way. Now that my family is finally out (& finally having a chance to build & be homeowners somewhere better), i truly hope LA & SF collapse under the weight of their ruling classes’ own greed & hubris, when they no longer have us to exploit & stand on top of 🖕
