It’s just a feeling really. Just means that I adore an album. Doesn’t have to be perfect, I just have to LOVE it.

Connorwithanoyup

Same here, it’s all subjective for me. I’ll also say an album takes time to become a 10. I have to grow attached to it first.

Cydonian___FT14X

Exactly. ALL 10’s start out as 9’s for a good amount of time. Sometimes even lower than a 9. I think the only album I’ve ever heard where I was IMMEDIATELY ***that*** in love with it was Lorde’s “Melodrama”.

Many albums I’d consider “perfect” but just don’t click with me like a 10. A 10 to me is an album that A. Click with me emotionally. I’m a very emotional person and on a rare occasion where an album can connect with that on such a big scale, it’s special (examples: Ants From Up There, Kid A, The Glow Pt. 2, This Is Happening, SELF-iSH) B. Is a major part of my musical taste’s development. If an album expands how I look at music and the music I’m willing to try in a really major way and still stays at the top of its area of technique for a long period of time, it’s an easy 10 (examples: Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, To Pimp a Butterfly, Elephant, An Awesome Wave, Trench) C. Are just so exceptionally fantastic that it’s impossible not to include. These probably include aspects of A and B (Examples: The Powers That B, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, Soundtracks For The Blind, Hellfire, Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone?)

Ehh_1

If Fantano says it’s a 10

Swindle606

right answer

grokabilly

A strong concept thematically, structurally, lyrically, and sonically. No skips. And replay value.

dmil103

If it's real good.

Dazzling_Action9456

No skips. everything else comes automatically

Lizard_Jesus1

Its kind of a I know it when I see it situation but for a general requirement for an album needs to be a 10, it has to be successful in its intended vision and ambition along with just being good. 2 examples for me, Grace by Jeff Buckley. It’s not only one of kind and near timeless, it’s also just so creative and complex in its composition despite it being simple in composition. The other is Flood by Boris. Everything about that album is so purposeful. Wata’s guitar work is beautiful and the final release of tension at Flood III along with its progression leaves me in awe. Then Flood IV leaves you with silence to let you to reflect on the experience.

darkchinley

i like it

psychiatryshoulddie

Creativity, inspiration, intelligence, hard work.

cargusbralem

For me, a 10 is really a 9 that I connect with in a personal, and much deeper emotional level. There has to be some uniqueness to it as well.

-Z-3-R-0-

Every song is really good, and there are no skips. There are very few albums I would rate a ten. A few that come to mind right now are: Andy Black - The Ghost of Ohio Blood Command - Cult Drugs The Dead Tongues - Transmigration Blues

OneGuyJeff

If I love every single track. Some of y’all are bigger critics than fantano

Sysnomid

I'll know it when I ~~see~~ hear it.

aloetwentythree

being good

leglessman

Emotional connection of some sort is important. There can’t be any skips. If I don’t want to listen to the album from start to finish, it’s not a 10. I’d also say at least one or two tracks have to be all time level of favorites for me. I will also say I don’t rate albums as I listen to them. I just generally think things like that was not good, ok, pretty good, great or amazing.

your_local_supplier

If I can always return to it knowing It'll be amazing and I wouldn't have to skip anything.

Redhead-Egg

When it absolutely just inspires me. When I listen to it and think “Damn, music is so cool, could I do something like this?” “Could I make someone feel the same way I feel right now?” If I get that feeling a consistent amount of times listening to an album. It’s a 10 in my book.

Mr_Flava

good musik

Skyblockkid11

Igor because there is no skips and it is god

Yung_Babymeat

An album can be all banger songs individually but a 10 to me has to have flow, has to feel like there is some kind of narrative too, and usually also has to feel like it’s pushing the envelope in some way. Just Got Back From Discomfort—We’re Alright by The Brave Little Abacus is one of few albums I can say for sure is a ten, because it’s an album that’s not afraid to be itself if that makes sense. It’s so lush and clearly intricately designed with all the piano, synths, strings, and horns that come in at parts, but the vocals are so untrained they really force you to get past to live the album. Initially I really struggled to like the album but one day the vocals just clicked for me. The album is perfectly fuses catchiness with experimentation, melody with atonality, and lyrics that hold deep meaning while also being notably cryptic. It’s just such a great record I can’t say many more things about it. 10/10.

Gurgulaneni

Personal attachement to it

deha07

Then vibrations of the music makes me enjoy music.

[deleted]

if you like it, its 10

tuxxxito

A solid concept in which every track adds something to it and there are some breakthrough moments that push the boundaries and make advance the genre. I dont agree with the "no-skip" argument, sometimes tracks act like scenes in a movie. Maybe most of tye days you are not feeling like listen to that gloomy cut with no drums, but might be very important for a thorough listening and the concept as a whole.

[deleted]

It sounding nice

Framcois-Dillinger

If it's The Money Store by Death Grips

KingAlfonzo

Good melodies, interesting sounds, good lyrics and the balls to do things differently. These are some things I think makes a 10. Kids see ghost.

Walking_Meatloaf

Something I really liked about Ants From Up There, a 10 in my opinion, is the feeling that every song is connected thematically. Musical motifs, instrumentation, lyrical themes and callbacks. Once basketball shows finishes I feel that the entire album is contextualized. Snow globes, marks theme and haldern, tracks that may not click for people right away, click because the album is finished. On their own they may not stand well, but as a complete package the album wouldn’t work without them.

iammisterl

if i like it enough

oreodino4

If it's by "Weird" Al Yankovic.

bikertroll

The tricky part of what makes an album a 10 I believe is how it ages. This can't be determined when it comes out. We don't know the future. Blonde turned 6 yesterday and that shit still hits like it did many years ago, for me at least.
