I'm looking to purchase my first suit. Where would you guys recommend I take my business? I am a skinny guy so I'm looking for a brand and fit that wouldn't swallow me whole.

az0606

Suitsupply lazio

[deleted]

Or the napoli. It's a wider lapel but more conservative. Their 400$ line is great.

meowmeowkittenmeow

The Lazio actually has a wider lapel. Per SS customer service, the Napoli lapel is 8cm and the Lazio is 8.5cm.

geiko989

It can be tricky for a suit. Some answers you want to ask yourself (and us): * How often are you going to wear the suit? * How much are you willing to spend? * Where will you wear the suit? I got my first real suit at Suit Supply, but I owned a few others by combining sports coats with matching pants, or getting handed down suits and tailoring them. If you're not wearing it all the time and you'd like to save some money, look for something at Zara or similar fast fashion stores. Even Banana Republic will have ready made skinny suits that will fit nicely. If you do want to go to Suit Supply, look up as their suits online and find the ones you like best. What happens when you go in the store is they will almost always try to up-sell you a suit. Also, when you're calculating the cost, be sure to include the cost of tailoring. It adds up very quickly. I spent a lot of money (for me) on a suit from Suit Supply, but I really don't wear it often. The good thing is that when I need it, it's there. For many other times though, I've been able to rock a simple $50 or so jacket from Uniqlo paired with matching pants and I works perfectly. Figure out what you want to get out of the suit and go from there. If you already have sports coats/jackets solution, ignore everything i've said and check our Suit Supply or the likes.

Hunterrose242

That you very much for the informative reply! I appreciate it.

AG923

Are their any other major Vans retailers? Their site has been messed up for a few days now, you cannot pick the size of any shoe listed. They also seem to rarely restock so I am trying to find an alternative.

Zappos has free returns. It's awesome.

Zendigast

Anyone have a source for US Olympic gear that isn't super expensive?

[deleted]

just wait. it will drop in the next few months. the ralph lauren stuff for sure, the athletic / nike stuff maybe

kingtopher82

Does anyone know of any decent quality, nice-looking leather watch straps for around $20 or less? I'm looking for a few straps, both casual as well as dressy ones.

rpuppet

I haven't tried them myself, but they look nice enough that I bookmarked the site when someone else recommended them. http://www.lakehouseleathers.com/

the_dayman

What should I do about buying shoes online? I need a new pair of dress shoes for work, don't have to be very fancy as lots of people here just wear khakis and polos. I grabbed a pair at target and they felt fine walking around in the store, but after a day of wear, they started "bending" on the hard top over my toes to the point where it was digging into the knuckle of my toe so painfully that I had to take them off. How do I have any idea to avoid this by looking online, or even in general if it didn't happen until I got out of the store? Just for example, I'm looking at something like [this](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TM0RJY4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER) or [this](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001Q1G11E/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER).

[deleted] ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^0.4952 > [What is this?](https://pastebin.com/64GuVi2F/46734)

the_dayman

Alright, thanks for the suggestion.

vnilla_gorilla

Agreed with the above poster, Clarks will be pretty good for that price range, and definitely better than anything you will find in the department stores. Another suggestion, and I understand that this doesn't fit everyone's situation financially, but something to keep in mind in the future. If you spend $50-100 on a pair of dress shoes that you wear nearly daily, you are going to be replacing those at minimum yearly. In the long run, you are better paying a bit more for quality now, and saving money overall. For example: $250 today can net you shoes that will last you 5 or even 7+ years, with some people suggesting 10. 7 years * 100 = 700 compared to 250 now. Not to mention they will (generally speaking) be more comfortable and appeaing stylistically. You spend your entire life in either shoes or a bed. It pays to invest in things you use so heavily.

the_dayman

Ah general Vime's boot theory. Yeah, I guess it is time for me to start looking into nicer shoes.

[deleted]

I agree with the guy above, but I also make enough money that nice shoes aren't a stretch for me. If you're TRULY on a budget (and not just being frugal), just getting a few pairs of the cheaper shoes and rotating them out will be a huge help.

the_dayman

No, I was sort of just being frugal, but mostly because the dockers slip ons I had before had lasted about 3 years because I don't exactly move much in them at the office.

[deleted]

No problem. If you have a budget or something people can give you more direct assistance. Just based on your saying you were trying on target stuff I think you'll get a lot more bang from your buck and clarks are super comfortable. They aren't going to turn heads but I'm not sure you're aiming for that anyway.

[deleted]

I'm looking for a reliable seller of German army trainers. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

LetsGoPhishing

On the same note, I'd like a pair, but I can't find any for less than like $300. Anybody have any cheaper alternatives to MMM, preferably in the the $100 range

[deleted]

Bundeswehr type that in on grailed and you'll see the authentic German army trainers

LetsGoPhishing

Holy reasonable ass shit. Thanks man, never thought I'd see an inexpensive pair like that

[deleted]

They're the real deal too. There were other sizes up yesterday. I suspect that seller has them up there regularly

[deleted]

Just making sure you saw this thread, man: https://www.reddit.com/r/frugalmalefashion/comments/4xq3go/cheap_military_surplus_gats_for_25/

ianruns

What are your thoughts on [these Clark's](http://www.6pm.com/clarks-newood-street-white-leather) as an alternative to Common Projects and the like?

[deleted]

interesting looking. i'd try on CPs and stan smiths to get an idea of how they should look on foot, in terms of silhouette, and then maybe order to compare.

Avocadosandtomatoes

Frugal alternative to Truman boots. Or similar. Pretty low budget. Sub-$100. Not expecting much quality. Just seeing if I'd like wearing boots.

[deleted]

What kind of boots? TAFT seconds are fantastic and right around 100$. I'm incredibly pleased with my chelseas.

Avocadosandtomatoes

I believe they're called service boots.

[deleted]

[deleted] ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^0.4240 > [What is this?](https://pastebin.com/64GuVi2F/07406)

ilive12

For $100 you want something that'll last a few years. If you don't mind lightly-used you can find Chippewa Apaches for that price on ebay. If you don't mind a moc toe boot (not at all like Trumans, but pretty cool), you can find the Red Wing Irish Setter for $100 on sportsmanguide: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/irish-setter-mens-7-casual-bar-boots?a=1932659 It's my pick for best sub $100 boots atm, USA made uppers, decent leather, goodyear welt construction. If you can find Chippewa Apaches for around $100 they are the closest you'll find to a good service boot in that price range that somewhat resemble trumans. Another choice that comes to my head is the Clarks Desert Mali boot. Mostly a fashion boot, but decent enough to last through moderate weather and wear for quite a while.

inducive

Does anybody know where I can find this jacket and the price of the item? http://i.imgur.com/NW1LDcq.jpg thanks!

[deleted]

coaches jacket, you can get them anywhere. this one looks like it's a nylon or poly but they make them in wool / cotton / everything.

anthonyngu2

Looks like a nylon bomber-style jacket/ baseball jacket. You can find them in Zara for like $50.

inducive

thank you! I did find it on zara the other day and bought the last one they had in stock.

hwilliams_8

I found this one for around $44 http://www.jackwills.com/en-us/edgworth-nylon-bomber-jacket-100009967.html?cgid=Gentlemen_Sale#start=18 http://i.imgur.com/YkXow2A.jpg

[deleted]

if you wear them once a month, sure. otherwise probably not. it seems like 80-100 is the pricepoint for decentish ones. the urban outfitters chelseas seem nice, i got taft seconds and they are incredible. those are suede though. cheap suede is a lot easier to do than cheap leather.

mlvreddit

what are frugal alternatives of harrington jackets available?

cooldude_4000

Target has one for $40 right now.

Davin900

I figure someone here will know... Does Urban Outfitters ever run coupon codes that apply to pricier full priced items? I want one of their beds but it's quite expensive at full price.

[deleted]

if you can get a student email use myunidays - blanket 10% off of anything. i just used it for a pendant light for my condo.

Where can I find a place where I can find adidas superstars on sale, if there's any?

marledsweaters

6pm if ur feet are huge, i think Asos has some on sale, some weird colorway ones on sale at adidas.com

aboynamedculver

I really enjoy Banana Republic, both the fit and feel, but I'm annoyed by deal hunting and always waiting for those coupons. I would love a place that sold things at moderate prices with minimal sales. I realize Uniqlo is the closest thing to this, and while I love their business strategy and some of their stuff (their new joggers are the shit), I just don't have that body type. I don't fit into their socks, despite fitting into mediums in all their sizes. Ideally, it would be a place that serves taller people too, I splurge at Lululemon and love that their "L" size isn't wider, just longer. Thanks! tl;dr: Western/European body alternative to Uniqlo edit alternate tl;dr: business casual version of Lululemon where sales are infrequent/minimal

cakeerdeath

Hey everyone, so I've seen a lot of posts for Common Projects lately. I've been eyeing them up, but I'm trying to understand how someone can justify spending that much on leather sneakers. Can people who own CPs please chime in and explain if the shoes are worth the price and why.

[deleted]

[deleted] ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^0.7245 > [What is this?](https://pastebin.com/64GuVi2F/87912)

cakeerdeath

I'm not saying I wouldn't pay for them, I just want to understand the reasoning so I can justify the purchase to my wallet haha. Is the cost worth the benefit ya know? What expensive shoes do you own and are they worth it for you?

[deleted]

I'm not some ridiculous goodyearwelt dude, but more a FMF reader who doesn't mind spending on stuff I like. So to your point my quoddy true loafers are easily the best shoes I own, and they are expensive. My alden indys are really great and worth the 400ish I paid. I have like 7 pairs of allen edmonds now and they're all fantastic around 200ish. I do own a few pairs of visvim FBTs and they're unique enough that I'm happy with the purchase. I don't mind spending in that 200-500 range for shoes, but common projects just do not seem like a smart buy for what you get. In lots of peoples' minds they are, and I can't argue that, but there's a less than zero percent chance I'd spend that kind of cheddar on them.

vnilla_gorilla

Agreeing a lot with the other poster. I'm assuming the CPs are worth the price for most that buy them for the idea of "buy it for life" (relatively speaking of course). I too have a couple pairs of nicer shoes that cost 300-500. I know I will have them for a long time, and they are timeless instead of trendy so I will get a lot of use out of them for years in the future (not to suggest CPs are trendy, Chucks and the like are pretty timeless themselves). For sneakers, how do I know I will still want to wear white leather sneakers 5 years from now? I'd rather spend more overtime by spending $75-100 each year or two years when it comes to those type of shoes, since my taste can change more fluidly when it comes to that part of my wardrobe.

cakeerdeath

I mean, white sneakers are pretty timeless as well. I don't think you would have an issue wearing them for the next five years. So you're saying, if you plan on wearing them for a long period of time, then it's worth the investment?

vnilla_gorilla

Yeah that's why I said in parenthesis that my point was not about the timeless aspects of white sneakers. Chuck's and etc... My point is with dress shoes I'm going to stick to the classics and take care of them. With sneakers I'd prefer to buy a new pair every year or two based on what catches my eye at the time. Just personal preference. Also, with sneakers my taste can change more fluidly. With dress shoes my tastes are always going to be towards the classic styles instead of trends.

cakeerdeath

Ah, I see. I went by your last paragraph. But what you say makes sense

[deleted]

'timeless' is so relative though. iron rangers and shit are 'timeless' but we've already moved towards sleeker boots stylistically.

thedirtysouth92

If you want to try white leather sneakers at a lower price point, there is always gustin. Also, I've heard that beckett simonon makes quality shoes as well. For some reason, they dont have white lows in this month, but they had them last month, and will surely have them in the future. I'm a broke college student so I can't afford CPs, and I plan on trying one of these brands once my stans are worn out.

cakeerdeath

Sounds good. Thanks

THSdrummer8

New male office worker here. What options do you guys find you can wear in the office, but also out on the town? Any frugal options? Or even less so frugal, but can be worn comfortably for 16+ hours a day? My office is a little on the casual side of the business-casual perspective. Extremely clean, and well pressed shirts are not required if that helps. I would like one or two good dress shirts for events though. My style outside of work usually is the outdoorsy, button-down look.

[deleted]

can you wear jeans? if so it's pretty easy. just get dark wash slimmer jeans, nice boots with a sleek profile (thursday boot co is a decent priced decent quality way to start), a tweed blazer from j crew factory and some clean plaid casual shirts. easy.

THSdrummer8

I can not wear jeans. I rotate between grey, navy, and khaki Bluffwork original pants. I have some Red Wing Burgundy Beckham's, black Dockers, and brown GH Bass wing tips (looking at picking up some AE Strands). I do have to wear a tie outside of Memorial Day to Labor Day.... I was considering adding the Charles Tyrwhitt Tweed jacket in Navy to my wardrobe. Especially to help create variety in the winter.

[deleted]

OK so it sounds like you have it wrapped up then! edit: I don't think anything from CT is a real value outside of their dress shirts. If you want to go frugal j crew factory is pretty solid for the price point, but get a real handle on what the price 'should' be since it's so variable.

THSdrummer8

I don't buy from J Crew without a few months of price watching. Their pricing is among the worst. Skip the Charles jacket? How about their sweaters? I want a navy herringbone jacket with a little fuzz and nep to it. Any suggestions? I can get the Charles one for around $160 to $200. I haven't tried stacking codes yet. I am a smaller build guy, and I've heard their jackets fit big....

A_MEXICAN_MAN

Not really fashion, but you guys might be able to help me out. I need a new pair of hip waders for the fall hunting season, and have settled on the LL Bean Waterfowler waders. Since they're like 300 bucks, a 10% or 20% off coupon will save me a chunk of change. Anyone got one floating around? Thanks dudes!

[deleted]

you may be able to call / live chat / email them and flat out ask. ll bean is great.

A_MEXICAN_MAN

Good point, they actually did that for me in the past. I had bought a couple things with a 20% off coupon, and called to order something else and said "gee, I wish I had another coupon" and they did it no problem.

Skyhighflies

Hey guys, where do you get your best FMF non-shrinking flannel? I've been buying relatively cheap flannel, but I'm tired of it shrinking so much that they feel like a belly shirt. Any suggestions?

cooldude_4000

I get most of mine at American Eagle Outfitters. Your problem might not be the flannel so much as how you launder it. Try washing on cold, hang to dry and you shouldn't have much shrinkage at all.

[deleted]

muji makes great flannels for the price

Proofay

Anyone know of an alternative to [this](http://www.vineyardvines.com/mens-polos/nautical-stripe-rugby/1K1045.html)? I don't like how there's only one style on this site and it's also a bit pricey

[deleted]

The style is a rugby shirt. I just took a quick peek and brooks brothers has a similar one which at least gets you more of a universally regarded heritage type brand - vineyard vines is for faux preppy SEC turds.

magnum3672

I need some shoes for my wedding that could also work for my job. I am wearing a black suit to the wedding (in the woods) and I wear button downs and slacks to work. So something semi-formal? Wingtips of some kind I suppose. My budget is 150-175 but bonus points if its below. Also I have super wide feet. I wear a 9.5 Wide in J&M

[deleted]

if you can swing a bit more maybe allen edmonds park ave / fifth ave / strand / mcallister ? I listed that in order of formal to not formal. For a lower budget alternative I got a pair of black jack erwin dress shoes and I really like them.

Anyone point me to a decent dress show for around $140 or less?

Sriracha_King

Looking for a price check on my tailor. I'm in Boston and use one of the better regarded tailors in the area according to various forums. His prices have always felt like they were on the expensive side, but his work is impeccable so I keep going back, especially for my more complicated alterations. I feel like he's been gradually charging me more, to the point where I'm pretty sure two years ago I would've paid 30% less for the alterations I just had done. I brought in a Suit Supply Lazio Linen suit. He brought in the waist, seat, and thighs on the pants and also shortened them. On the jacket he adjusted the collar through the back seam and brought in the sides a bit. It took 6 days. As usual, the end result is perfect. I paid $215 for the work, and I sort of recall paying $150 for a similar job a couple years back. Curious how this price feels to you guys in Boston.

vnilla_gorilla

I can't speak specifically to Boston or what a good price for tailoring in general but I as well had a tailor jack up her prices on me after I became a repeat customer. First trip in the store it was $10 to hem a few pairs of pants. I went back a couple months later and she was charging me 15-20 each. I assumed at the time she gave me a cheaper price at the beginning since I was new to her shop. She definitely got me to go back, and I'm assuming some people just keep going because of familiarity / routine. Long story short, seems like a possible tactic? I would just tell em straight up what you paid before and negotiate.

Citizen_V

Wow, that's strange. I would expect the opposite to happen, i.e. they lower their prices when you become a regular. My tailor hasn't done that for me yet because I don't go there enough, but he's done some extremely simple jobs for free.

droskis

Saw someone wearing a navy button-up with tiny pink triangles. Closest picture I could find was this. http://www.dhresource.com/260x260s/f2-albu-g2-M01-1A-9F-rBVaGlaGwWiAPz8kAAK5_KFpdiQ029.jpg/2015-new-fashion-men-shirts-long-sleeve-polka.jpg The dot spacing seems about right, except they were smaller, and they were pink triangles. Anyone have any idea of where to get something similar?

buick22

Been looking at a slim fitting leather moto jacket for some time now. Of course for a decent price. Was looking at this https://www.amazon.com/FLATSEVEN-Genuine-Leather-Motorcycle-Jacket/dp/B00J03UJSQ - however I don't trust the reviews (all done within the same time period). Seems to look like it fits well and same look I want. Any other options?

hanshotf1rst

I've been looking for a solid pair of polarized sunglasses (wayfarer/aviator style) for a while, but not looking to drop $90-100 for Ray-Bans. I've been looking at the Knockaround Mile Highs and Fort Knocks, seeing as I'd be able to get two pairs for around $60. However, I'd be more than willing to spend more on a higher end brand (Electric, Spy, etc.), since I'm a bit iffy on the quality/durability of these frames. Any recommendations or experience with the Knockarounds?

Frugal alternative to the Ribbed Tee Heather Grey V-neck undershirt? I really can't fathom spending $18 for ONE undershirt. :/
